The Multinational Corporation bestrode the 19th, 20th and early 21st centuries like the Colossus of Rhodes. Through their efficiency in organizing and effectiveness in achieving goals, multinationals have shaped the world in which we live perhaps even to a greater extent than governments and the people they purport to represent. Yet just as the Rhodes colossus was toppled from below, the rise of grass roots, virtual groups represents a similar seismic nemesis to the modern multinational. The panel focuses on blockchain, the technology behind Bitcoin and Ethereum. The topic has drawn much attention recently in both business and academic circles. The blockchain is a distributed, immutable digital record system that is shared among many independent parties and can be updated only by their consensus. If unbiased and incorruptible blockchain-based information systems become prevalent repositories of our records, trusting other humans with constructing and maintaining key records to define the resources at our disposal could become unnecessary. In principle, blockchain could provide a decentralized information infrastructure that no one fully controls, thereby no one has absolute power and no one can distort past or current records. The full potential let alone implications of blockchain is still unknown. The panel explores blockchain challenges and opportunities from the IS research perspective.

This report is based on NVWN – the Nordic Virtual Worlds Network, a two-­year Nordic research project and network combining academics, practitioners, and entrepreneurs running from March 2010 to February 2012. The project investigated the opportunities and challenges that the emerging 3D immersive Internet and virtual worlds pose for entrepreneurship and innovation. During the two years, the project produced several reports on topics such as entrepreneurship, innovation, and the future of the virtual worlds and these can be found on our project website: http://nordicworlds.net/project-­findings/. As virtual worlds are a relatively new IS medium, limited attention has been paid to investigating the use of design research in virtual worlds. ABSTRACT In recent years the internet has begun to develop into a much more immersive and multidimensional space, and it is this emerging ‘Immersive Internet’ that has not just gripped our attention but has begun to weave or be woven into the fabric of our professional and social lives. This is likely only to go further as platform and interface developments in augmented reality, social networking sites, online games, virtual worlds, and the 3D internet signal a move towards communications technologies and virtual spaces that offer immersive experiences persuasive enough to blur the lines between the virtual and the physical. Higher education institutions and corporations are increasingly exploring new pedagogical methods to align with learning styles of incoming students and employees, who are amazingly adept at using Web 2.0 applications. This chapter explores the use of virtual worlds, in particular that of Second Life, in educational activities by organizations such as higher education institutions or corporations. We begin by introducing virtual worlds with a particular focus on Second Life. We then provide an overview of the benefits of this environment for learning activities before presenting a set of potential learning activities that can be conducted within Second Life. We then discuss an in-depth example of 3D teaming-one learning activity within Second Life conducted by the authors. After a discussion of implementation challenges, we then present areas for future research.

The European Union, as well as national, regional, and even local government organizations across Europe, is promoting research and development collaborations as efficient and effective vehicles to turn ideas into new products, services, and solutions in order to improve competitiveness. One of the largest programs is the European Community Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration (RTD). This paper investigates the impact of the FP6 funding using two output measures developed for this study: organizational network structure and publication impact. Results using a dataset consisting of 1312 RTD projects with more than 14,000 partner organizations indicate that 1) different types of organizations play different roles in the networks, 2) RTD partner co-publication was impacted positively, and 3) the size of the RTD project (i.e., number of partners) influences project performance.

In recent years the internet has begun to develop into a much more immersive and multidimensional space, and it is this emerging ‘Immersive Internet’ that has not just gripped our attention but has begun to weave or be woven into the fabric of our professional and social lives. This is likely only to go further as platform and interface developments in augmented reality, social networking sites, online games, virtual worlds, and the 3D internet signal a move towards communications technologies and virtual spaces that offer immersive experiences persuasive enough to blur the lines between the virtual and the physical. We are deeply uncertain as to what form or forms the Immersive Internet will take and what it will mean for individuals, society, culture, politics, and the economy. As these spaces, practices, and technologies progress, a more intimate and immersive internet and virtuality will emerge. At the same time as the Immersive or Intimate Internet gathers pace, it is likely that its opposite – the Invasive Internet – will continue to encroach on our lives, societies, politics, and economies. At present there are simply so many questions and unknowns about what might happen. But what we are sure of is that the evolution of such spaces and technologies will mean much for both the avatar/individual and the world(s) around it/us. This book is a collection of short thought pieces that we think critically engage with the future directions that the Immersive Internet might, should, or even should not take. The book emerged as a way of trying to collect ideas and opinions from a wide variety of people who have been heavily engaged with these sorts of questions and issues. Since the Immersive Internet – including social media, augmented reality, virtual worlds, online games, 3D internet and beyond – is still nascent or emerging and is being explored by a number of different disciplines, we assembled participants from a wide range of academic disciplines and professional backgrounds. What all these thinkers share is a deep engagement with the possibilities, both positive and negative, of a progressively more immersive and intimate set of internet-mediated spaces and interactions. The idea was not to collect a series of empirical pieces on the current state of the art but to collect pieces that provoke and attempt to take in the big picture and the long term: what we think of as, in short, Postcards from the Metaverse.

FinTech, a contraction of Financial Technology, has become an increasingly “hot” sector among policy makers and investors across the globe. This growing sector has attracted investments at an estimated USD 12.2 billion globally in 2014 as well as interest in a number of regional hubs: Silicon Valley, New York, London, Stockholm, and Australia. Stockholm, similar to many other regional financial hubs, has seen considerable investment and activity in this sector. For example, in 2014 alone 15 FinTech deals attracted USD 266 million in investments, accounting for a remarkable 18 percent of the total USD 1.5 billion FinTech invest-ments across Europe, as well as 32 percent of Sweden’s total USD 826 million in investments in private companies.
