The ability to effectively measure the quality of health-related life (HRQoL) is a key aspect to describe the impacts of the disease, treatment, or other injuries, beyond normal and expected aging of the patient. During the last two decades, the assessment of the patient's health status has undergone a dramatic change of paradigm, evolving from a predominant reliance on biochemical and physical measurements to an emphasis on health outcomes based on personal appreciation of the patient's illness. There are several measuring instruments to evaluate Quality of Life (QoL) in general and HRQoL in particular but the real-time analysis of data produced by these instruments is only possible with technology associated with decision support systems (DSS). The development of these types of information systems are a few problems that must be resolved. The QoLIS (Quality of Life Information System) is an “Health Business Analitics” (HBA) based in a web platform that uses information on HRQoL, in addition to clinical data, to provide information to support the clinician in decision making and can interact with any data source.

With the rise in wearable technology and "health culture", we are seeing an increasing interest and affordances in studying how to not only prolong life expectancy but also in how to improve individuals' quality of life. On the one hand, this attempts to give meaning to the increasing life expectancy, as living above a certain threshold of pain and lack of autonomy or mobility is both degrading and unfair. On the other hand, it lowers the cost of continuous care, as individuals with high quality of life indexes tend to have lower hospital readmissions or secondary complications, not to mention higher physical and mental health. In this paper, we evaluate the current state of the art in physiological therapy (biofeedback) along with the existing medical grade and consumer grade hardware for physiological research. We provide a quick primer on the most commonly monitored physiologic metrics, as well as a brief discussion on the current state of the art in biofeedback-ass...

As a result of improved living conditions and the progress achieved in areas related to medicine, there is a decrease in the mortality rate but an increase in the number of patients with chronic diseases. Contrary to what happened until a few decades ago, patients with chronic diseases now have a high life expectancy. However, the patients increased life expectancy, often causes great pain and significant adverse effects. In addition to prolonging life, it is essential to increase the quality of life (QoL) of patients. The QoL is now considered an important aspect in clinical practice for patients with chronic illnesses, but the methods to assess QoL, in automatic or semi-automatic manners and their use in clinical decision support are still underexplored and their applications are virtually non-existent. This paper presents an overview of research related to health quality of Life, estimation of quality of life including its continuous estimation, modeling and behavioral recognition and representation of knowledge in this area and decision support systems for clinical decision making and quality of life related applications.

Advances in the last decades in the areas of medical science and patients treatment resulted in a decrease in the mortality rate but also an increase in the number of patients with chronic diseases. This increased life expectancy of patients with chronic diseases often involves great suffering and considerable adverse effects for the patients. Thus, in addition to prolonging life, it is essential to increase the quality of life (QoL) of patients. QoL is now considered an important aspect in clinical practice for patients with chronic illnesses, but the methods to assess, in an automatic or semi-automatic manner, QoL, and their use in clinical decision support are still underexplored and their applications are virtually inexistent. The QVida + solution is based on scientific and technological developments in the areas of quality of life and mobile devices, with the goal of creating a new paradigm for the evaluation and use of QoL in clinical practice. The solution devised is based on an adaptive information system (IS) able to use physical and behavioral data of the patient, gathered by sensors and mobile devices, in conjunction with machine learning techniques, allowing continuous assessment of QoL based on measurement tools that significantly reduce the questionnaires response time without affecting the patients daily life. Continuous assessment of QoL and its rapid use on a clinical decision support system will enable a better quality and more supported decision, patient-centered, by the physician, allowing for an increased quality of life of patients.

Wheelchairs are important locomotion devices for handicapped and senior people. With the increase in the number of senior citizens and the increment of people bearing physical deficiencies, there is a growing demand for safer and more comfortable wheelchairs. So the new Intelligent Wheelchair (IW) concept was introduced. Like many other robotic systems, the main capabilities of an intelligent wheelchair should be: autonomous navigation with safety, flexibility and capability of avoiding obstacles; intelligent interface with the user; communication with other devices. In order to achieve these capabilities a good testbed is needed on which trials and users’ training may be safely conducted. This paper presents an extensible virtual environment simulator of an intelligent wheelchair to fulfill that purpose. The simulator combines the main features of robotic simulators with those built for training and evaluation of prospective wheelchair users. Experiments with the real prototype allowed having results and information to model the virtual intelligent wheelchair. Several experiments with real users of electric wheelchairs (suffering from cerebral palsy) and potential users of an intelligent wheelchair were performed. The System Usability Score allowed having the perception of the users in terms of the usability of the IW in the virtual environment. The mean score was 72 indicating a satisfactory level of the usability. It was possible to conclude with the experiments that the virtual intelligent wheelchair and environment are usable instruments to test and train potential users.

In general, quality of life is the perceived quality of an individual’s daily life, that is, an assessment of their well-being or lack thereof. Life quality of individuals is very important for involves several factors such as social, economic, psychological, spiritual or medical state. The information technologies can help with the management of the services for the healthcare of chronic patients. It was developed and implemented a Quality of Life platform using information technologies and with application of statistical methods to access the information of clinical data of patients with cancer from otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck services of an oncologic institution. The sample was composed of 3013 patients. The results show that there are variables with significant predictors for the Quality of Life: years of smoking (p value 0.049) and size of the tumor (p value < 0.001). In conclusion statistical methods allow having access to additional information helping the physicians to be able to know the quality of life and produce a well-informed clinical decision.

ABSTRACT Assistive Technologies may greatly contribute to give autonomy and independence for individuals with physical limitations. Electric wheelchairs are examples of those assistive technologies and nowadays each time becoming more intelligent due to the use of technology that provides assisted safer driving. Usually, the user controls the electric wheelchair with a conventional analog joystick. However, this implies the need for an appropriate methodology to map the position of the joystick handle, in a Cartesian coordinate system, to the wheelchair wheels intended velocities. This mapping is very important since it will determine the response behavior of the wheelchair to the user manual control. This paper describes the implementation of several joystick mappings in an intelligent wheelchair (IW) prototype. Experiments were performed in a realistic simulator using cerebral palsy users with distinct driving abilities. The users had 6 different joystick control mapping methods and for each user the usability and the users’ preference order was measured. The results achieved show that a linear mapping, with appropriate parameters, between the joystick’s coordinates and the wheelchair wheel speeds is preferred by the majority of the users.

Abstract—Electric wheelchairs are now more intelligent due to the use of algorithms that provide assisted driving. Typically, the user steers the electric wheelchairs with conventional analog joysticks. This implies the need for an appropriate methodology to map the position of the joystick handle in a Cartesian coordinate system to the wheelchair motor velocities. This mapping of joystick positions to individual wheel speed can be done in an infinite number of combinations. However it is this mapping that will determine the response ...

Abstract Over the years, air transport has increased gradually. This increase can cause difficulties in air traffic management, reducing its effectiveness. The use of intelligent agents in air traffic management seems to be a promising approach to overcome this difficulty. Thus this paper proposes the creation of a multi-agent system for autonomous air traffic management. Several concepts and proposals suggested by other authors about this topic are used in this implementation in an attempt to create a system based on the strengths of ...
