Bruno Zevi

In 1964 Bruno Zevi and Paolo Portoghesi launched an ambitious
retrospective of Michelangelo’s oeuvre to commemorate the
fourth centenary of his death. Held at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in
Rome, the exhibition, titled Mostra Critica delle Opere
Michelangiolesche, offered a comprehensive experience of
Michelangelo’s work entirely through replicas and reproductions.
A controversial aspect of Zevi’s didactics were the inclusion of
student-designed critical models that were intended to support a
visual criticality alongside Oscar Savio’s photographs. The models
operated as a touchstone for Zevi’s larger investigation into the
representational possibilities for architectural history, and student
photographs of the critical models appeared in a special editorial
that was published in Zevi’s periodical, L’architettura: cronache e
storia. Using installation photographs, unpublished preparatory
photographs, and the final published images, this essay examines
the unique indexicality constructed through a remediation of the
critical model as it evolves from the exhibition to the pages of
Zevi’s journal. By working through the photographic archive of
the Fondazione Bruno Zevi and the personal archive of Paolo
Portoghesi, this essay argues that the lens(es) used to frame
Michelangelo’s architectural theory operated through a type of
Benjaminian dialectics; one that reveals the “modern key” used by
Zevi to approach Renaissance architecture at mid-century.

Espacio: La cuarta dimensión en Arquitectura " Apropiarse del espacio es el primer gesto de los seres vivos, de los hombres y de las bestias, de las plantas y de las nubes, una manifestación fundamental de equilibrio y de vida. La primera prueba de la existencia consiste en habitar el espacio. " (Le Corbusier) Nuestra naturaleza como seres vivos no hace habitar el espacio, ocupar un lugar en el universo, en nuestro planeta. El arquitecto contemporáneo se expresa mediante un lenguaje con herramientas muy amplias y vastas, sin embargo, al momento de que su obra final, la construcción, tendrá como lenguaje principal a los espacios. El espacio ha jugado un papel vital en la representación de cualquier obra artística; la pintura necesita espacio para ser admirada en dos dimensiones, la escultura está ligada al espacio y poder ser admirada en tres dimensiones, sin embargo, en estos dos casos, el espectador es solo eso, un espectador, no interactúa directamente con la obra, por otro lado, en la arquitectura se juega un papel más profundo, se deja de ser un espectador para ser un usuario. La arquitectura se lleva a cabo en un cuarto plano, Según Bruno Zevi, una " cuarta dimensión ". In mostra cinquanta foto, in parte inedite, realizzate da Oscar Savio (Padova 1912 - Roma 2005) per le Celebrazioni per il centenario michelangiolesco del 1964. Gli scatti riproducono opere di Michelangelo e le sale della Mostra critica delle opere michelangiolesche al Palazzo delle Esposizioni.

La notizia della scomparsa di Gillo Dorfles, dopo quasi novant’anni di carriera intellettuale costellata di un numero molto elevato di opere letterarie, innumerevoli articoli e contributi di vario genere, e coronata da numerosi riconoscimenti, ha consegnato la sua opera in modo definitivo all’analisi e allo studio dei posteri. Un corpus, si è detto, particolarmente vasto, per estensione temporale e per argomenti, frutto della straordinaria varietà d’interessi dello studioso triestino. Sempre lo stesso articolo evidenziava come la poliedricità di Dorfles derivasse dalle sue conoscenze personali, acquisite sin dalla giovinezza trascorsa in quel crocevia tra l’Italia e l’Europa centrale che fu la Trieste austro-ungarica. Altri articoli lo hanno ricordato, di volta in volta, come professore di estetica in alcune importanti università; come critico d’arte che sdoganò il kitsch, che sfidò l’idealismo crociano ancora dominante e la concezione dell’arte come un organismo autonomo, insieme di valori universali decisi da una ristretta élite che determina il gusto, teorizzando che fosse invece la società, in tutte le sue diverse espressioni, a plasmarlo; infine come artista. Il tutto sempre guardando all’arte, e nello specifico alla sua critica, mai alla storia, per conservare sempre quell’approccio “aggressivo”, più vicino ai paesi di cultura tedesca che all’Italia, sempre aggiornato e attento alle trasformazioni dell’arte e della società, del costume e della moda, radicato nella passione e nella curiosità per il mondo e il presente dell’uomo , assunto costantemente come punto di partenza per nuove nozioni. Oltre a riconoscere l’importanza di Gillo Dorfles per la critica d’arte e la filosofia italiana, la sua morte consente però anche una rilettura a posteriori della sua figura, e i dovuti elogi tributatigli non devono oscurarne gli aspetti controversi. È infatti innegabile che l’enorme varietà dei suoi interessi non gli abbia consentito di studiarli in modo particolarmente approfondito, vanificando l’enorme potenziale di molte intuizioni; per questo, sebbene il pensiero dorflesiano sia facile da ricostruire nel suo sviluppo, esso è composto di più costruzioni razionali diverse, unite spesso solo dal comune pensiero dell’autore, e da parallelismi o giustapposizioni di opere, nomi e correnti in realtà profondamente distanti. Inoltre, se le origini triestine e la formazione medica possono aver contribuito ad un punto di vista fortemente all’avanguardia rispetto alla critica dominante, la mancata formazione come storico dell’arte e i mancati contatti con figure importanti lo hanno privato di nozioni fondamentali per la sua opera. Tale rilettura critica costituisce anche lo scopo del presente lavoro, che si concentrerà sul primo interesse di Dorfles, l’architettura, e in particolare sulla teoria del Barocco nell’architettura moderna, alla quale fu dedicato l’omonimo libro uscito nel 1951, opera prima dello studioso. Il volume anticipò infatti di più di trent’anni la prima teoria sul barocco nella società contemporanea elaborata da Omar Calabrese, e s’inseriva nel ricco e tormentato dibattito sull’architettura del secondo dopoguerra, in cerca di risposte soddisfacenti di fronte all’enorme distruzione di vite umane e di centri urbani causata dal conflitto, e di nuova linfa dopo il tramonto della generazione che aveva decretato il successo del Movimento Moderno e dell’International Style. Con il suo tipico approccio, Dorfles identifica tale risposta in un insieme di valori già propri dell’architettura barocca, che attraversando tutte le epoche sino al presente si sono progressivamente manifestati nell’opera di vari architetti, giungendo ad un’epoca matura per la loro ripresa.
Una ricostruzione senza dubbio affascinante, ma che non può non fare i conti con un’opera di poco anteriore, che costituisce il vero «convitato di pietra»  con cui "Barocco nell’architettura moderna" è chiamato a confrontarsi: "Verso un’architettura organica", pubblicata pochi mesi prima della fine della guerra dallo storico dell’arte Bruno Zevi. Lo accomuna con Dorfles il medesimo punto di partenza e il medesimo scopo, ma non la risposta, che nel suo caso è costituita dall’architettura di cui fu pioniere Frank Lloyd Wright, radicata nella cultura americana e concettualmente più avanzata rispetto alle coeve ricerche europee. Per questo, dopo aver esposto per sommi capi la teoria di Dorfles, potremmo metterla a confronto con la soluzione di Zevi, consentendoci una valutazione che possa restituircene un giusto quadro critico.

Questo articolo fornisce il primo Statuto di Architettura e Museologia liquida facendo seguito al primo tentativo di definizione da me proposto nel 2014.
Prendo atto che presso il grande pubblico e particolarmente in Italia il concetto di liquidità è stato completamente frainteso mentre in ambito critico internazionale è stato invece correttamente svolto e ha potuto affermare propria incisiva presenza nello spazio della cultura d’avanguardia. Come noto infatti Marcus Novak propone nel 1993 il termine Architettura Liquida in relazione alla realtà virtuale nell’era dell’informazione telematica e Zygmunt Bauman applica il concetto di liquidità nel 2000 nella sfera sociologica sondando i rapporti tra architettura e territorio mentre Salvatore Rugino propone una rassegna dei rapporti tra architettura e liquidità nel 2008 e altri autori seguono su questo corretto filone esegetico.

Per approfondire la definizione critica internazionale di architettura e museologia liquida ho proposto nel 2014 di considerare il concetto di “liquido” nell’arte come erede del concetto di anticlassico già individuato da Giulio Carlo Argan, prima nel 1930, in riferimento alle osservazioni di Milizia nei confronti di Andrea Palladio, e poi nel 1984 seguito da Bruno Zevi nella sua monografia del 1973.

In seguito alla creazione, sempre nel 2014, di un Gruppo di Ricerca alla Sapienza su Architettura e Museologia liquida mi è sembrato importante proporre in questa sede di considerare fondamentale per l’individuazione dei caratteri liquidi nell’architettura e nella museologia quattro elementi tipologico-simbolici fondamentali: specchio, labirinto, frattali e mostro e ribadisco che la concezione di “anticlassico”, dalla quale nasce negli anni Novanta del Novecento quella di “liquido”, è presente anche in ambito archeologico come proposto da Graziella Becatti e dimostrato da Enrico Ascalone, entrambi facenti parte del Gruppo di Ricerca della Sapienza su Architettura Liquida. This article provides the first Statute of Architecture and Museology liquid further to the first attempt at definition proposed by me in 2014.
I note that among the general audience and especially in Italy, the concept of liquidity has been completely misunderstood while in international areas has been properly carried out and instead was able to affirm its effective presence in space of the avant-garde culture.

As previously noted, Marcus Novak proposes in 1993 the term liquid architecture in relation to virtual reality, in the telematic information era, and Zygmunt Bauman applies the concept of liquidity in 2000 in the sociological sphere probing the relationship between architecture and landscape.
Salvatore Rugino, instead, offers an overview of the relationship between architecture and liquidity in 2008 and other authors followed his correct exegetical trend.

To study the critics international definition of liquid architecture and museology, I proposed in 2014 to consider the concept of "liquid" in art like a heir to the concept of anti-classic, identified by Giulio Carlo Argan, first in 1930, in reference to the comments of the Militia against Andrea Palladio, and then in 1984, followed by Bruno Zevi in ​​his monograph of 1973.

In 2014, a research group of Sapienza University started the study of Architecture and Museology liquid, and it seemed important to me to propose to start to consider, for the identification of liquids characters in architecture and museology, four basic typological and symbolic elements: mirror, maze, fractals and monster.
Besides, I remind that the "anti-classical" concept, from which was born in the nineties of the twentieth century that of "liquid", is also known in archeology, as Graziella Becatti proposed, and Enrico ascalone demonstrated.

Between the forties and the fifties the debate on the “Synthesis of the Arts” represented a dilemma for artists, architects and critics all across Europe and especially in Italy. This essay tries to go deep inside this issue through the lens of survey: a way of inquiry that seems to be strictly related to this debate through the old tradition of “Paragone delle arti” in the Italian Renaissance which demonstrates the permanence of some rhetorical aspects that continue to represent the Synthesis of the Arts itself.

One of the characteristics of the late medieval city is the continuous adaptation to changing demographic, economic, military and institutional needs. The form of public spaces and of the buildings facing them is bent to them. The relationship between architecture and the city must therefore be considered in a diachronic and elastic way. Thus even the celebrated perception of the main monuments is often the result of a complex process. In it the project-realization cycle is repeated several times, modifying the initial intentions and adapting the result to the new conditions of the urban landscape. For better describing this dynamism, one of the most fruitful categories of analysis of architectural phenomena is still that of ‘urbatecture’, introduced in Italy by Bruno Zevi. Exemplary is the case of the Bargello Palace, one of the main Florentine public buildings, whose vision from the square occupies an important place in historiography.

Članak je nastao kao opsežan prikaz knjige Povijest moderne arhitekture I-II. Dvotomni povijesni preglednik moderne arhitekture Brune Zevija, talijanskog arhitekta, povjesničara i teoretičara arhitekture, izvorno je napisan prije 60 godina i u međuvremenu je više puta nadopunjavan i proširivan sve do 1995., gotovo do samoga kraja autorova života.

Il volume tenta un riesame della figura di Gustavo Giovannoni all’interno dell’architettura italiana ed europea del XX secolo. Laureato in ingegneria, Giovannoni contribuì in maniera decisiva alla formazione di una nuova figura professionale identificabile con la definizione di “architetto integrale”. All’interno di questo grande contenitore operativo, si possono ritrovare diverse variegate competenze (che contengono a sua volta altri sottosistemi), che fanno parte di una ricca cartella comune. E allora si passa dalla legislazione (regolamenti edilizi) all’urbanistica (piani regolatori, interventi nella città storica, diradamento), dall’ambiente (progettazione urbana, territoriale, paesaggio) al restauro (integrazione, tutela, regolamentazione), dalla progettazione edilizia (barocchetto, tecnica delle costruzioni) alla storia dell’architettura, dalla didattica alla tecnologia (idraulica, tecnologia del cemento urbano, costruzioni tradizionali), dall’escursionismo al paesaggio. Questi interessi, così diversi a un primo sguardo superficiale, viceversa sono tutti fortemente integrati (e indagati) da Giovannoni, alla cui sintesi egli stesso lavorò per tutta la sua vita che si concluse nel 1947, quindi due anni dopo la fine del secondo conflitto mondiale, un anno dopo il referendum che cambiò il sistema politico italiano da monarchia (costituzionale) a repubblica e pochi mesi dopo alla ratifica della conferenza di Parigi, che decretò l’aspetto definitivo dell’Europa post-bellica.

This essay focuses on Bruno Zevi’s working period immediately after Second World War, coming back to Italy after his stay in London and in the USA. He starts right away his impressive attempt of popularizing contemporary architecture through “Metron”, the first magazine to be printed in Italy after the war, from 1945 to 1954. In this crucial phase he founded the APAO (Association for Organic Architecture), he contributed to the editing of the Manuale dell’Architetto (an handbook with all the new construction and ready-assembly techniques), he published Verso un’architettura organica (1945), Saper vedere l’architettura (1948) and Storia dell’architettura moderna (1950), he curated the first Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit in Italy and he greatly contributed to the spreading of modern architecture and urbanism all around the country. Zevi also paying special attention to social issues, raised the question of inner spaces where man lives and where the collective theme is expressed, and stressed the need of shaping the building in the name of human use and enjoyment.

Il saggio indaga il percorso ideativo, gli allestimenti e i contenuti di due mostre che hanno la peculiarità di ‘esporre architettura e urbanistica’ e si confrontano con la difficoltà di trasmettere al pubblico una serie di concetti, in immagini e forme, che richiedono mezzi inconsueti di rappresentazione.
1964: la Mostra Critica delle Opere Michelangiolesche a Palazzo delle Esposizioni inaugura un’operazione che ben risponde alla voracità culturale della Roma del boom economico. Portoghesi e Zevi sfruttano le loro abilità di registi per fare presa sulle emozioni del pubblico, l’allestimento diventa una narrazione critica in cui si intrecciano istanza conoscitive, interpretative e comunicative.
1978: : la mostra Roma interrotta ideata da Piero Sartogo mette in scena ai Mercati Traianei il lavoro di dodici architetti sulla pianta del Nolli del 1748. L’allestimento celebra il ritorno nella Storia, attraverso la grande arcata romana sotto un telo di raso azzurro. I disegni restano in bilico tra le seduzioni delle avanguardie e scenari frammentati che raccolgono un repertorio vastissimo e smarrito di forme.

The article focuses on the changes in the nature of urban history and the shaping of this specific approach as a field in the 1970s in Europe. It deals with the Italian scholar Vera Comoli’s way of “making history” within the frame of the formation and the initial period of adjustment of urban history in Italy. It shapes her research activity and several other Italian historians’ research peculiarities in the commitment to the present face to the transformations that were taking place in cities, as well as in the identification of Cultural Heritage field as another feature of the scientific and educational activity of the History of Architecture. From this interdisciplinary approach Comoli adressed the study of cities, its relationships and values, grown till the last commitment at the occasion of the AISU National Congress held in Turin in 2006.

Any building can be studied from different point of views: from an " autonomous " point of view it could be described through the analysis of its formal qualities, from a heteronomous one, it could be described through the analysis of the political and social processes that allowed the construction of such a building. Yet, these two dimensions of critical interpretation are not mutually exclusive. Heteronomy and autonomy can coexist because they ultimately are different interpretations of a building, not design techniques. Yet, the word " autonomy " is historically linked to an ideological conceptions of the discipline for which a building is (and must) be defined by a specific set of rules derived from language and/or history. Such an ideological ideal of architecture is the core theoretical assumptions in the work of many theorists and historians and finds its roots the Kantian philosophy: Consequently, any judgment related to aesthetic and formal qualities of anything derives from a cognitive process by which the subject can abstract more specific phenomenological qualities by the knowledge of categories. From this point of view, language is by itself a form of knowledge that gives architecture its right of existence. Nonetheless, even in the most autonomous expressions of architecture can always be found some heteronomous. For instance, despite the autonomous nature of Aldo Rossi's and Peter Eisenman's cultural projects, that rooted either in history (Rossi) or in language (Eisenman), their work shows an astonishingly long list of trans-disciplinary references: the philosophies of Chomsky, Derrida and Deleuze (Eisemnam). Rossi: the metaphysical poetics, or Federico Fellini's and Italo Calvino's " magical " realism. As proven by these examples, the existence of heteronomous referents is inevitable. Then, in order to deeply understand " autonomy " , it is necessary to deal with the " problem of embodiment " , derived from the theory of translation: an interpretative and hermeneutical problem; a translation. Still, this problem poses a key theoretical issue: since operating a translation means to operate a transaction of cultural values from a context to another, it is necessary to deal with a displacement of terms, concept and values that produces an offset of truth. First of all, we know that the work of the architect has always profited from external disciplinary contents enabling the generation of content. Furthermore, it also exists a specific theoretical dimension of art in which the proper discipline's boundaries are permeable. As noticed by Anthony Vidler, this idea of (not) architecture is analogous to Rosalind Krauss' idea of a disciplinary " expanded field " : a " field " in which disciplines' boundaries blur into each other and there is not any theoretical center. 1 Yet, what are the modes of such a translation? Literalism One of the most important theorists of architecture who has stolen ideas from art theory is Colin Rowe. Certainly Rowe believed the autonomous nature of the discipline and he theorized modernism as a sophisticated research on architectural formalism, a kind of language that was interpreted at its best by Le Corbusier. However, even though he isolated buildings like Palladio's Villa Malcontenta and Le Corbusier 's Ville Stein from their context by operating a close reading of their compositions, Rowe's formalist theories show more unusual and inter-disciplinary connections than is usually supposed. A famous example of Rowe's unconventional formalist reading of a building is the appropriation of concepts such as " pictorialism " and " Collage ". Indeed, the particular compositional idea related to the concept of " collage " is used by Rowe as an interpretative model for architecture through which he tries to link the tridimensional nature of space the phenomenological experience of architecture. Still, as noticed by Marc Linder, the idea of collage in Rowe's theories – as well as others such as pictorialism – draws a similarity to Clement Greenberg's theories. 2 The existence of such a similarity is certainly not a new discovery: they both share an interest in modernism as a formal discipline, they both have a narrative that assumes the existence of a positive history of this language's evolution and, last but not least, they both would have become " Oedipical " figures for the American theorists who followed them in their respective disciplines. Rowe's definition of " pictorialism " as a category through which it is possible to understand the purist buildings of Le Corbusier shows a connection with Greenberg's ideas (even though none of them ever cited the other) and, as well as Le Corbusier's white buildings are to Rowe's eyes defined by a succession of surfaces, so great modernist painting is, according to Greenberg, a pure surface.

Este documento es un resumen del texto de 162 páginas, desarrollado en el marco de la asignatura “Tema de arquitectura”, trabajo de investigación, para optar al grado de Licenciado en Arquitectura por la Universidad de Valparaíso-Chile. Mimarlık görmenin egemen olduğu klasik beş duyu dışında, bu duyuların etkileşime girdiği birçok duyusal deneyim alanını içermektedir. Plastik duygular aracılığıyla insanın dünyayla karşılaşmasına olanak veren mimarlık, bireylere deneyim alanı sunarak içinde bulunduğumuz dünyanın bize nasıl dokunduğunu görünür kılmayı amaçlar. Mimarlık mekân yaratımı aracılığıyla yer ile iletişim kurmakta; sunduğu deneyim alanı ile beden-mekan etkileşimine olanak vermektedir. Zevi, Merleau- Ponty, Heidegger, Pallasmaa mimarlığın fenomenolojik ve algısal boyutuna odaklanarak çok-duyulu mekân deneyiminin mimarlığın özünü oluşturduğunu ifade etmişlerdir.  Bu çalışma görmenin hegemonyası dışında çok-duyulu mekân deneyimine ve duyular arası etkileşime olanak veren mimarlık yapma biçimine odaklanır. Bu nedenle öncelikle mimarlığın görevleri ve boyutları açıklanacak; sonrasında ise mekanın çok-duyulu bir deneyim alanı olarak hangi bileşenler için potansiyel bir alan olduğu tarif edilecektir. Çok-duyulu deneyimi “atmosfer” kavramı aracılığıyla yaratmayı amaçlayan Zumthor’un yapıları bu kapsamda incelenmiştir. Yapılarındaki atmosferi benimsediği on iki ilke doğrultusunda yakalayan mimar için mimari varlık (the body of architecture); malzemenin uyumluluğu (material compatibility); mekanın sesi (the sound of space); mekanın ısısı (the temperature of space); saran, çevreleyen nesneler (surrounding objects); sakinlik ve cazibe arasındalık (between composure and seduction); iç ve dış arasındaki gerilim (tension between interior and exterior); samimiyet seviyeleri (levels of intimacy) ve nesnelerin sahip olduğu ışık (the light on things) atmoferin temel ilkeleridir. Bunlara ek olarak çevreleyiciler olarak mimarlık; uyum, denge ve güzel form olarak sıraladığı üç ilke atmosferi tanımlayan anahtar kelimelerdir. Zumthor mimarlığı, sunduğu özgün beden-mekan-yer etkileşimi sayesinde, mimarlık ontolojisinin sağladığı olanakların keşfedilmesi açısından önem taşımaktadır. İkonik mimarinin insan-mekân- yer etkileşiminde oluşturduğu kopuklukların, Zumthor mimarlığında deneyimin kurgulanması yoluyla bertaraf edilmesi, modern mimarlığın tabularını yıkan bir mimarlık pratiğini gözler önüne sermektedir. Modern mimarlığın kendi kimliğini tanımlayan yerden kopuk mekân anlayışı düşünüldüğünde Zumthor’un eserleri, ontolojik açıdan modern mimarlığın sınırlarını zorlamaktadır.

No final da década de 1950, a arquiteta Lina Bo Bardi e o arquiteto Bruno Zevi estabeleceram um debate sobre a questão espacial na arquitetura e no urbanismo. Em 1947, Zevi, em resposta à historiografia moderna da época, publicou seu livro Saber ver a arquitetura no qual procurou estabelecer condições elementares para a crítica da arquitetura fundamentada na questão espacial e no seu conceito de espaço interno. Posteriormente, em 1957, a arquiteta elaborou uma resposta crítica a seu colega italiano em sua tese sobre teoria da arquitetura e em outras
conferências proferidas nos anos seguintes em Salvador e São Paulo. Influenciada por Zevi, Lina Bo Bardi desenvolveu sua versão do que seriam os elementos fundamentais da arquitetura e os sintetizou no

Inspirada pelo seu contato com as artes dramáticas no Brasil, ela altera a noção de interior ao considerar a ação humana criativa um fator determinante da produção do espaço arquitetônico. A compreensão deste espaço a partir da noção de interior, atrelada à cidade, resulta em estratégias de projetos nas quais Lina Bo Bardi privilegia uma síntese interior em detrimento de uma síntese da envoltória do edifício. Observadas a partir deste ponto de vista, suas obras adquirem outra camada de sentido em que o MASP aparece como ponto de inflexão. O debate em questão tinha como pano de fundo a revisão do movimento
moderno no pós-guerra e coincidia com o momento máximo da arquitetura moderna brasileira durante a construção de Brasília. A questão espacial surge como alternativa crítica às tendências formalistas e ideológicas inerentes à historiografia moderna. Abstract

The "cultural resistance" that had characterised the Italian climate until the end of the conflict, fueled by the intellectuals more or less involved with the anti-fascist struggle, is translated, at the end of the war, into a flourishing of publishing initiatives also in the architectural market. Three types of publications can be identified: periodical press, books and collection of books.
Bruno Zevi has a prominent role in the publication sector. From the immediate post-war period to the end of his life, he was involved in several editorial projects: single books, magazines and book series. The paper addresses the book series design by Zevi: Collana storica di architettura (Einaudi), Architetti del movimento moderno (Balcone), Universale di architettura (Dedalo).

Nell’ambito di una ricerca sulle utopie dell’Italia centro-meridionale, non si può non citare l’opera dell’architetto Franco Pedacchia (1940). Personaggio caleidoscopico, originario di Greccio (RI), per il quale il disegno è sintesi di «[…] sogno, notturno, irrisolto, labirintico, fiaba […]» (L. Guido, 2007).  Una carriera la sua lunga circa cinquant’anni, in cui ha avuto modo di collaborare agli esordi con Bruno Zevi, con Giuseppe Galasso. Il suo nome è, però, soprattutto noto per alcuni amati/odiati progetti, verso i quali la critica ha posto più volte l’indice contro e di cui qui tratteremo attraverso un’intervista all’autore.

(As part of a research on the utopias of central and southern Italy, one cannot fail to mention the work of the architect Franco Pedacchia (1940). Kaleidoscopic character, originally from Greccio (RI), for whom the drawing is the synthesis of "[...] dream, nocturnal, unresolved, labyrinthine, fairy tale [...]" (L. Guido, 2007).  His career spanned about fifty years, in which he had the opportunity to collaborate at the beginning, with Bruno Zevi, with Giuseppe Galasso. The Japanese way of building and inhabiting – deeply rooted in a secular tradition but manifesting innovative solutions – has decisively influenced many Western authors, from Conder, Wright, Taut, Schindler, Raymond to Aalto, among others.
Regarding Portugal and its numerous modern architects, modernity was appropriated through different moments and its evolution went, lastly, through a late stage of reflexion that tried to foster its own unique regional identity within modernity.

Su Enrico Calandra (1877-1946) ha pesato un lungo silenzio storiografico. Le memorie dei suoi allievi - tra questi Giuseppe Samonà, Lina Bo, Bruno Zevi - ci consegnano il ritratto di un maestro in anni che di maestri sono assai poveri. Attraverso lettere, scritti e disegni emersi dall'archivio dell'architetto, questo libro restituisce in un'unica immagine i molti volti di Enrico Calandra: quello del giovane architetto alla ricerca della modernità, quello del maestro amatissimo dagli allievi più diversi, quello dello storico dell'architettura impegnato nella definizione dei fondamenti di una disciplina che da allora, grazie anche ai suoi studi, appartiene agli architetti.

“There’s no such thing as ‘Jewish’ architecture.
Lacking historical precedents, creating a Jewish architecture
simply isn’t possible.” In 2015, in the
Jerusalem Post, Gerard Heumann writes this peremptory
statement, as if to wipe out any doubt
about the possibility of writing a history of Jewish
architecture. While convinced of the contrary, this
text intends rather to investigate whether and what
were the Jewish components that influenced modernist
architecture.
In the chapter “Judaism and Space-Time Conception
of Art,” the historian Bruno Zevi underlines
how the theme is of particular interest as it leads
to a denial of any possible “ethnic and anthropological
misunderstanding”: “The Jewish message
influences many artists who are not Jews: this is
evidenced in architecture as there are very few Jewish
architects in history.” We must therefore try to
analyze those components of the Jewish message
that are widely found first of all among Jewish intellectuals.
They are outsiders by vocation because
they have been able to semantise the condition of
the Wanderer, to which the Jewish people have
been subjected since ancient times. Necessity creates
the context: this is why the Jews have an infinite
capacity for changing. Mobility has necessarily
become heritage of the Jewish spirit. The Jew thus
becomes the ‘destroyer of limits’: he does not set
them to himself, he does not to things, moving according
to a specific Freigeist. At the beginning of
the twentieth century, the free spirit of the Jewish
thinker explores modernity in its most subversive
forms, from sociology to music, from physics to
psychoanalysis. Languages change drastically. An
example: Freud uses the word Muttererde and not
Vaterland to describe a non-physical, but internal
belonging. “The Jew is an individual, but not an
individuality; devoted all to the interior life, he does
not feel the need for the continuation of his own
existence, he lacks to be true, immutable, and metaphysical,
he has no part in the eternal superior life.”
We will try to verify how the components of this
inner life have strongly influenced the development
of twentieth-century architectural thought.

Il saggio centra l’attenzione su una figura fino ad oggi poco indagata, Silvio Radiconcini, esponente del panorama culturale italiano negli anni a cavallo del secondo conflitto mondiale, al quale diede un contributo importante fondando con Bruno Zevi l’A.P.A.O. (Associazione per l’Architettura Organica).
Il loro sodalizio nasce al rientro di Zevi dagli Stati Uniti, qui riparato dopo le leggi razziali, dove si confrontò con figure come Walter Gropius e Frank Lloyd Wright che ne influenzò il pensiero sulla visione organica dell’architettura.
L’incontro con l’amico Silvio Radiconcini dopo alcuni anni, avvenuto per caso in via Monserrato a Roma, porta i due studiosi a confrontarsi e a fondare nell’estate del 1945 l’Associazione, che aveva lo scopo di inserirsi nel dibattito architettonico del primo dopoguerra, quando si rese necessario affrontare il problema della ricostruzione. Agli esponenti di adesione razionalistica, che sostenevano una continuità di metodo progettuale nella ricostruzione urbana, libera dal formalismo e dall'accademismo di eredità fascista, si oppose l'A.P.A.O., che privilegiava le istanze organicistiche dell'architettura di matrice wrightiana. Questo scontro trova eco anche in sede editoriale con la rivista Metron, fondata da Bruno Zevi, che ne fu direttore, e Silvio Radiconcini, insieme a Cino Calcaprina, Luigi Piccinato, Enrico Tedeschi.
In questo contesto, nella formazione di Silvio Radiconcini furono importanti alcune amicizie con esponenti del mondo culturale, quali Toti Scialoja, suo compagno di banco a scuola, e Cesare Brandi, assiduo frequentatore della sua casa e che gli darà l’incarico per la progettazione degli spazi dell’Istituto Centrale del Restauro, voluto dal Ministro dell’Educazione Nazionale, Giuseppe Bottai, che segna una pietra miliare nel panorama della cultura del restauro italiana e che fu portata avanti da Silvio Radiconcini con i caratteri propri della sua formazione razionalista, nella declinazione organica.
Come lo stesso Bruno Zevi ebbe modo di ricordare pochi mesi dopo la sua scomparsa, Radiconcini svolse una battaglia energica, quotidiana e capillare, per estirpare il male della retorica, del monumentalismo e delle banali scenografie del ventennio, grazie alle sue rare qualità intellettuali, alla curiosità per il nuovo e il mondano, un gusto per le arti che completavano la sua personalità di architetto.

La storia non è di proprietà esclusiva dello storico. Questi può farne un uso scientifico, sebbene ciò non sempre accada. Il passato può inoltre prestarsi ad essere utilizzato in modi non scientifici. Di più, si può dire che il passato sia passibile di usi non storici: questo, in architettura, è il caso frequente da parte della critica. Ed è l'uso che qui maggiormente ci interessa: in termini precisi, il "potenziale critico dello sguardo storico".

Escrito que se transcribió de las palabras pronunciadas en el Acto con motivo de la celebración del Cuadragésimo Aniversario del edificio sede de la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, el 24 de octubre de 1997.

A partir de la pregunta ¿Cuál puede ser el tema más adecuado para valorar el edificio sede de la Facultad de Arquitectura ‒diseñado por Carlos Raúl Villanueva entre 1954-1956  y construido en 1957‒ en la Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas? Se desarrolla un discurso que apunta a destacar los valores excepcionales de esta edificación. Uno de estos valores lo constituye la relación fenomenológica de la obra con los programas y actividades académicas. Ya lo señalaba Bruno Zevi con toda propiedad, tenemos una obra que ha sido concebida en términos que atrae y permite la experimentación activa en sus espacios. Es un edificio que es un texto abierto sobre lo que debe ser la arquitectura: no puede pasar inadvertido; nos impacta al habitarlo; nos conmueve al recorrerlo; y, reclama nuestra atención y sinergia con sus espacios, colores, luces y sombras. Cada aula, taller, recinto, lugar, superficie, ventana, abertura, jardín, patio, obra de arte, puerta, pared, bloque calado, parasol, piso, peldaño, pasamanos, etc. es una oportunidad no sólo para pensar en la arquitectura, sino también una ocasión para reflexionar sobre la arquitectura. He aquí la gran lección sobre arquitectura que nos dejó Villanueva en los espacios del Edificio de Arquitectura. He aquí su gran valor como un texto construido sobre lo que significa la arquitectura que se puede hacer en este país caribeño y tropical.

La segunda parte del texto trata las acciones emprendidas en 1997 para restaurar esta edificación ante su franco deterioro. La restauración figuró como objetivo clave de la agenda de trabajo de nuestra gestión decanal, considerando que debía ser una de las primeras acciones. Considerabamos que la primera lección objetiva que deben aprender nuestros alumnos debe ser experimentar esta magnífica edificación, para lo cual se requiere un trabajo continuado. Nuestro lema de gestión ha sido y seguirá siendo: "La arquitectura: una Facultad-una Escuela". Nos propusimos devolverle el carácter original a nuestra edificación. Por este motivo, al momento cuando estábamos celebrando el Cuadragésimo Aniversario del Edificio de Arquitectura, esperábamos que a través de la revaloración y la recuperación de este magnífico edificio podíamos iniciar un proceso de transformación material que le diera sentido y coherencia físico-espacial de nuevo a la Escuela de Arquitectura de la UCV.

Como estudiante bien  podría definir a la arquitectura como el oficio de diseñar y construir edificios y estructuras donde se puedan desenvolver las actividades humanas, sin embargo pude encontrar un mejor fin a esta profesión que decidí para mi futuro, que hasta este lapso de mi vida se está volviendo fundamental.

In 1959, the Extraordinary International Congress of Art Critics (IAAC) was held in Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In total, Congress included a inaugural session and eight specific sessions, each of these dealt with a subject relevant to the idea of urban planning and concerning on the Synthesis of the Arts. The sessions of the Congress of IAAC were polarized by two main debates: one on the relevance of urban planning adopted to build the Capital in the geographic center of the country, another on current of thinking the arts in terms of a trend towards synthesis.

Un "Warning" è dovuto a tutti quelli che avranno l'ardire di leggermi, riguarda la mia modalità di scrittura che, sebbene spesso apparentemente arrogantemente apodittica, non ha alcuna pretesa di raccontare la "Verità" sulla fotografia (non esistono verità con la maiuscola, le verità sono tante quanti quelli che le raccontano), ma solo di delineare le caratteristiche ed il percorso della mia personale esperienza fotografica, per arrivare a svelare il significato da me attribuito all'immagine scelta per partecipare ad un bel "gioco culturale" associare un significato ad un'immagine.
Queste pagine nascono dal fatto che mi piace molto giocare, a qualsiasi età ho giocato molto, l'ho sempre fatto con una importante serietà: fosse anche solo per raggiungere quell'indirizzo di "Parco della Vittoria", che nell'edizione originale del Monopoli del 1934 (quella in cui non a caso compare perfino "Via del Fascio"), costava come solo terreno 2.500 Lire, ed oggi è arrivato a 1.000 Euro. La stessa serietà che ho messo nelle pagine che seguono.

Paolo Portoghesi, launched one of the most ambitious retrospectives of Michelangelo's oeuvre to commemorate the fourth centenary of his death. Held at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, the exhibition titled, Mostra Critica delle Opere Michelangiolesche, offered a comprehensive experience of Michelangelo's paintings, drawings, sculptures, and architecture entirely through replicas and reproductions. Plaster casts, slide projections of monumental paintings, and in the case of architecture, the juxtaposition of photographs by Oscar Savio and critical models made by Zevi's students at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) in collaboration with the Spatialist painter, Mario Deluigi, offered a novel perspective towards Michelangelo's work. The models operated as a touchstone for Zevi's larger investigation into the representational possibilities for architectural history, becoming a series of student photographs that were published in a special edition of Zevi's periodical, L'architettura: cronache e storia. This paper analyzes the various layers of distance-physical, historical, and epistemological-that are reconfigured and represented through the mediated photographs. By examining the unique indexicality constructed through the real object, the model, and the photograph, this paper locates the "modern key" used by Zevi to approach Renaissance architecture at mid-century. Working through the photographic archive of the Fondazione Bruno Zevi and the personal archive of Paolo Portoghesi, this paper argues that the lens(es) used to frame Michelangelo's architectural theory attempted to collapse all of these various distances through a triangulation of knowledge between intentionally mediated modes of representation.

Il contributo analizza i profondi cambiamenti politici e sociali che attraversarono l’Italia dal 1943 al 1947, che posero Gustavo Giovannoni davanti a una riflessione sia sulla sua passata partecipazione agli apparati consultivi dello Stato sia sui possibili meccanismi da attuare per la ricostruzione. Anche in questi drammatici anni, Giovannoni dimostrò di non abbandonare l’agone della politica culturale, criticando, proponendo, galvanizzando i giovani, fornendo nuove strade da percorrere agli storici e agli urbanisti.

The centenary of the birth of Bruno Zevi (1918–2000) has given rise to a wide-ranging evaluation of his legacy as a critic and historian of architecture and as a cultural presence in and beyond post-war Italy. This programme has included a major conference in Haifa (May 2018), events at the Kunsthistorisches Institut and Villa I Tatti in Florence (March 2018), and Zevi’s Architects: History and Counter-History of Italian Architecture, 1944–2000 at the Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo in Rome, which may well be one of the largest-ever treatments of an architecture critic at a major museum.

Zevi’s Architects serves to remind its audience of Zevi’s importance in his own time as a cultural figure in Italy (especially in Rome): historian, urbanist, curator, teacher, publisher, and, of course, architect; an unapologetic advocate for a form of modern architecture that fully grasped its place in history; and a major popularizer of those architectural principles, derived from history, that he thought should remain in play in the present. In books, magazines, articles, and exhibitions, and on television and radio, his intellectual life was staged for a public that spilled from the lecture hall and the studio out into the city. [...]

Em 1959, o Congresso Internacional Extraordinário de Críticos de Arte (AICA) foi realizado em Brasília, São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro. No total, o Congresso contou com uma sessão inaugural e mais oito sessões específicas, cada uma dessas tratou de um assunto pertinente à ideia de planejamento urbano e à Síntese das Artes. As sessões do Congresso Extraordinário da AICA foram polarizadas por dois debates principais: um, sobre a pertinência do planejamento urbano adotado para se construir a Capital no centro geográfico do País; outro, sobre a atualidade ou anacronismo de se pensar as artes em termos de uma tendência para a síntese.
