History of Jesuits

En el Virreinato del Perú existía la arquitectura jesuita que se puede describir como misionera y funcionó en varios ámbitos. Estamos hablando de templos de formas simples que los jesuitas construyeron en lugares donde la nueva fe recién se estaba introduciendo. Dicha arquitectura estaba determinada principalmente por su función, no sufriendo tantas modificaciones regionales, aunque algunos elementos decorativos y algunas variantes de la composición se pueden calificar como soluciones locales. En la ponencia quisiera presentar ambos aspectos mencionados, tanto encontrar los elementos globales de la arquitectura misionera de los jesuitas como destacar su diversidad en las regiones. Me gustaría caracterizar diferentes aspectos como: el mismo proceso de la construcción, la sobrevivencia de la tradición indígena, el uso de las formas y materiales, y también en la variedad de sus decoraciones. En este análisis quisiera centrarme en ejemplos de arquitectura creada por la Compañía de Jesús, en Colombia (Tópaga, Fontibón), Perú (Andahuaylillas y Juli), Bolivia (indios Mojos y Chiquitos), en las famosas misiones guaraníes en la actual Argentina, Paraguay y Brasil, y también en la arquitectura misionera de Chiloé.

El voto de pobreza es esencial para muchas órdenes religiosas, como lo es su relación con quienes hoy son marginados y pobres en su contexto. El presente artículo se remonta al origen del abrazo a la pobreza por parte de Ignacio de Loyola y su transferencia a la Compañía de Jesús fundada por él. Sigue con el desafío de mantener ese compromiso teniendo en cuentael principio ministerial de la Compañía en educación. Por último, repasa los logros de los últimos 60 años en la definición y comprensión de los términos “fe y justicia”. La preferencia de Ignacio por los Jesuitas que viven cerca de los pobres es ciertamente cuestionada en el contexto de la educación superior en EE.UU.

Well-known in the historiography for his decision to prior missionaries from India to China and Japan since
1577, the Jesuit visitor Alessandro Valignano (1573-1577) also had a previously important action in India, although
this last one is less mentioned. The main goal of this article is to review Valignano´s first three years as Jesuit visitor
to India, linking his missionary initiatives with his political interventions. Contextualization is, thus, made on his
appointment as visitor and on the impact of his arrival to the Portuguese court, in 1573, in order to understand the
origins of the political debates in which Valignano got involved in Asia and the way those controversies affected his
1577´s decision. Based on the visitor’s main correspondence as well as his Sumário Índico we attempt to reevaluate
the importance of his first visitation to India.

Die Fasten und Osterzeit im Werken der olmützer Jesuitenbruderschaften während der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts.

Die hier vorgelegte Studie konzentriert sich auf die Darstellung der Veranstaltungen und Wahrnehmungen der Osterfesten, insbesondere der Passionswoche im Kreis der Marianischen Kongregationen des Gesellschaft Jesu. Der autor benützte die Manuskripten der grösseren und kleineren lateinischen Modalität vor allem. Es handelt sich hier um einzigartige Handschriftengruppe in den Fonden der Olmützer wissenschaftlichen Bibliothek, die die Entwicklung der Olmützer jesuitischen Kongregationen vom 16. bis zum 18. Jahrhunderts enthüllt.

No se ha insistido de manera suficiente sobre el hecho de que la Compañía de Jesús identificándose como misionera, no contaba en los inicios de su expansión por el mundo con religiosos formados específicamente para las misiones; dicho de otra manera, los jesuitas aprendieron las estrategias misioneras sobre el terreno. En el Perú y Latinoamérica tuvieron que pasar por un tiempo de ensayos y errores hasta conocer el territorio adecuadamente y ejecutar de manera más eficiente su propuesta apostólica. En ese proceso, se encontraron con las dificultades inherentes a un terreno muy distinto del que ellos conocían en Europa: el territorio marcado de manera longitudinal por la cordillera de los Andes, hacía muy difícil los desplazamientos deseados por la institución, llamados misiones volantes o temporales. Esto conllevó de igual manera, a que durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVI y en los inicios del siglo XVII fuesen adaptando su modo de ser religioso a la geografía, en estrecha interacción con las culturas locales. No debe extrañar si planteamos que los rasgos propios de la identidad espiritual jesuita se vieron confrontados por la novedad de un nuevo territorio y una nueva cultura que les condujo a ir replanteando su modo de proceder apostólico. La gran necesidad de mano de obra pastoral para dedicarse a la población indígena les hizo reflexionar sobre su manera de concebir la misión. El primero en haberlo hecho de modo sistemático fue José de Acosta, en De procuranda Indorum Salute. Para entender mejor este proceso, es importante tomar en cuenta, cómo se fue adecuando en el Perú la comprensión institucional de su misión en relación con la dedicación hacia las poblaciones originarias. Esto nos conduce a su vez a una tercera variable que a veces se suele dejar de lado: la repercusión de este proceso en la experiencia espiritual de los misioneros. De qué manera el llamado a las misiones entre indígenas, así como la relación establecida con ellos, influyeron en el modo en que los jesuitas vivían su espiritualidad, en un proceso de constante relectura de sus fuentes institucionales. Mi intención es mostrar que las acciones en un contexto cultural determinado, inducen a los jesuitas a reflexionar sobre sus propias agencias, llevándoles a elaborar una narrativa (discursiva e iconográfica en el caso de este artículo), en la que se manifiesta su autopercepción institucional y por ende, espiritual, al tratarse de una orden religiosa. No son pocos los testimonios de los 2 misioneros respecto de su práctica espiritual; si bien es cierto que las cartas anuas están llenas 3 de referencias a los frutos espirituales con el fin de una "edificación" de sus auditores o lectores, no por ello dejan de transmitir el testimonio de la subjetividad de los narradores, sobre todo si seguimos su pista desde una perspectiva de larga duración. El dilema de la misión entre indígenas fue penetrando el modus operandi de la institución y debió incidir en la experiencia espiritual de los misioneros, a la par que se elaboraba una suerte de "propaganda pro-indígena fidei" al interior de la institución en el Perú, que mostraremos en algunas pinceladas, desde el El presente artículo forma parte de una investigación más extensa en torno a la identidad jesuita en la misión 1 peruana: "Haciéndose indio viejo con el indio : definiendo la Misión jesuita en el Perú (1568-1600)" En: J. This essay aims to analyze the hitherto neglected (or deliberately avoided?) link between De spiritualibus ascentionibus (On spiritual ascents) by Zerbolt of Zutphen (1367–1398) and the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola (c. 1491–1556). Indeed, there is a more direct relationship between these two texts than between Ignatius’s Spiritual Exercises and the Exercitatorio spiritual by Abbot García Jiménez de Cisneros (1455–
1510) and the Imitatio Christi (Imitation of Christ) by Thomas à Kempis (c. 1380–1441), which has received much more attention in the existing literature. A careful synoptic reading of these works reveals not only an intriguing congruence between Zerbolt and Loyola in terms of the scope and definition of their works; the general structure and vocabulary; humanistic soteriology and optimistic anthropology of human will; the
role of introspection in reforming inordinate affections and affective devotion; the role of examen of conscience (both daily and general); frequent sacramental confession and Communion; the role of spiritual guide; the use of the five senses and composition of place as meditative techniques and importance of methodical mental prayer; and the centrality of imitation of Christ’s humanity, but also direct textual reciprocity.
Zerbolt’s Spiritual Ascents appears to be a blueprint for Loyola’s Exercises.

Niemiecki ekonomista, ojciec Heinrich Pesch SJ, opracował w początkach XX w. oparty na idei solidaryzmu system ekonomiczny, mający stanowić alternatywę zarówno wobec wolnorynkowego liberalizmu, jak i etatystycz­nego socjalizmu. Jego „społeczny system pracy” miał na celu przeniesie­nie zasad chrześcijańskich w dziedziny życia społecznego i gospodar­czego. Pesch oddziaływał głównie poprzez swoich uczniów, wywierając pośrednio wpływ na rozwój nauczania społecznego Kościoła. Mniej znany jest natomiast jego wkład do rozwoju nauk ekonomicznych. Celem arty­kułu jest przybliżenie osoby Heinricha Pescha, kręgu jego uczniów i spad­kobierców intelektualnych, oraz pobieżny zarys wpływu, jaki oni wywarli, i dziedzictwa, jakie pozostawili, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem nauk ekonomicznych.

El presente trabajo se centra en el análisis de los legajos del siglo XVIII “Varias composiciones poéticas” y “Láminas curiosas” conservados en el Fondo Mutis del Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid. Estos documentos presentan un aspecto poco conocido de la actividad del botánico gaditano José Celestino Mutis en el virreinato del Nuevo Reino de Granada, vinculada con el uso de emblemática. Estos documentos, alejados de los terrenos de la ilustración científica, nos llevan a un caso de emblemática jesuítica para celebraciones regias, cuyo análisis nos adentra en problemas del barroco hispanoamericano.

The present work is committed to an analysis of two 18th Century files: “Varias composiciones poéticas” and “Láminas curiosas” preserved at the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid on the Mutis Fund. This documents show a little known aspect of Cadiz botanist José Celestino Mutis in the vice kingdom of Nuevo Reino de Granada that is the use of emblematic. The files, far from the scientific illustration realm, presents us a case of Jesuit emblematic for Royal Commemorations, whose analysis deepens in Hispanic American Barroc issues.

Patente no Museu da Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra, a exposição Visto de Coimbra – os Jesuítas entre Portugal e o Mundo leva a Companhia de Jesus do seu ponto de partida para o centro das atenções, focando-se em dois núcleos principais – os colégios jesuítas de Coimbra e as missões jesuítas no mundo. A mostra põe em evidência alguns protagonistas jesuítas formados em Coimbra e enviados para o mundo, desde a fundação do Colégio até à expulsão da Companhia. Encontramos nesta exposição instrumentos de ensino e de ciência, como os azulejos que ensinam, hoje à guarda do Museu Nacional Machado de Castro, mas também tesouros raros da Companhia, como a escultura luso-oriental de Cristo morto no crucifixo da igreja do Colégio de Jesus ou a bota de São Francisco Xavier (relíquia da Comunidade do Noviciado do Santo Nome de Jesus), e também objectos pertencentes a António de Vasconcelos, que permaneceram ocultos durante mais de 250 anos na Igreja do Colégio de Jesus (Sé Nova).

Andrea Pozzo's larger, more famous frescoes have tended to supercede his small, 1682 corridor outside St Ignatius Loyola's private apartments in Rome. And yet, the site is more than just a prelude or footnote to his other, grander works in Mondovi, Rome and Vienna. The corridor stands out because it exploits radical disjunctions between perception and belief, subject and frame, and vision and hallucination. The anamorphic elements of the trompe l'oeil architecture destabilize and threaten to overwhelm the quadri riportati that track a narrative regarding Ignatius's life and miracles. Pozzo's own publications are largely unhelpful for understanding anything more than the frescoes' technical and geometrical rules. In fact, there is no text that can be used to understand the corridor's "program." But the corridor's frescoes visually and phenomenologically suggest a Jesuit response to Counter-Reformation ideas about truth, sight and miraculous visions articulated through the visual contrasts and juxtapositions of its enclosed representational system. The site is thus a case study for the difficulties Jesuits faced both in distinguishing between different categories of visual phenomena and in policing different responses to them.

This piece of research aims to present a historiographical and methodologi­cal review of the history of the Jesuits, the civilian population and the military troops during the German military occupation in Italy between 1943 and 1945. The analysis of hitherto unexplored sources, accessible since 2 March 2020, allows historians to explore the archival heritage that was produced by the different religious communi­ ties of the Society of Jesus present in rural and urban territories, which carried out functions of education, pastoral care and assistance in the communities of reference. The analysis of the role and function of the religious orders as observers of "Great History" to tell the story of the life of the civilian population in the years of the Second World War and under military occupation represents a privileged point of view that still awaits investigation.

The growth of the Society of Jesus in North America in the post-restoration period can only be described as phenomenal. We cannot of course deal with the history of the American Jesuits and the American Church in great detail here; our interest is rather to set those essential points which can serve as background and context to a proper understanding of the situation of the Maryland-New York Province in the years leading to and including the transfer of the Philippine Mission from the Aragon Province to the northern American province in this century.

On August 15, 1695, Jesuit Belgian missionary Antoine Thomas wrote in Beijing a memorandum On the need of [ordaining] Chinese priests and on the dispensation [for the celebration] of the [Holy] Sacrifice in Chinese (De necessitate sacerdotum sinensium et dispensionis pro sacrificio in lingua sinica). It was presented to Pope Innocent XII in 1698 and to Clement XI in 1701. Thomas, on behalf his confreres, asked the Pope for two concessions: the promotion of indigenous clergy and the permission for having Chinese as liturgical language. Both submissions went without result and the memoir fell into obscurity.

Thomas argued that China is an entire new world, possibly with more inhabitants than Catholics in the whole world. Even the conversion of neighboring nations depends upon the Chinese. Thomas concludes his inspiring memoir by claiming that “since the beginning of the Church of Christ, there was never a matter of greater importance. We have spared no efforts in promoting such a grave matter.”

Indeed, since the very beginning of their mission, the Jesuits speared non efforts at achieving the conversion of China, the “greatest matter since the beginning of the Church”. They adopted innovative strategies in responding to the challenges posed by Chinese cultures and religions, and they adopted accommodation as their missionary method.

L’analisi di più di ottanta questionari e racconti autobiografici di vocazione compilati dai candidati a entrare nella Compagnia di Gesù nel noviziato romano di Sant’Andrea al Quirinale tra il 1636 e il 1643, conservati presso l’Archivum romanum Societatis Iesu, permette di rintracciare le forme assunte dalla vocazione religiosa, in particolare dalla vocazione alla Compagnia di Gesù, e i modi per esprimerla a metà Seicento. Si riscontrano una delicata composizione tra discernimento personale e obbedienza alle guide spirituali e le dinamiche della formazione e del reclutamento nella Compagnia di Gesù a un secolo dalla sua istituzione. Gli scritti degli aspiranti gesuiti, in gran parte in giovane età, possono rientrare tra gli “Egodocuments”, come nuova tipologia, e sono fonti per lo studio degli adolescenti e dei giovani nella prima età moderna. Molto ricco l’apporto di tale documentazione allo studio della spiritualità e della devozione nel Seicento. Conclude lo studio un’appendice con alcuni racconti di vocazione.

There is an almost puzzling absence of accounts of the circumstances surrounding the transfer of the Spanish Jesuits from the Philippine Mission to the Bombay Mission in Philippine documentary accounts, leading one to suspect that an intended or unintended suppression of reports on the event had taken place.  It is almost as if the decision was too painful to be recounted, so that an absolute silence was deemed the most prudent response to the decision made by the Society's highest superiors. In any case, Jesuit obedience asserted itself and new chapters would be written in the history of the Philippine and Bombay Missions. German Jesuit Troubles in the Bombay Mission What triggered the change in mission responsibility for the Spanish Jesuits in the Philippines was none other than the outbreak of the First World War and its devastating consequences for Jesuit mission work in general and apostolic endeavours in the Bombay Mission in particular. The war between Great Britain and Germany, each with its own respective group of allies, had its unfortunate effect in lands as far away as India and, in the aftermath, provided the circumstances for changes in the Philippine Mission of the Society of Jesus.
