Inka Archaeology

RESUMEN:
Se entregan los resultados de sucesivas intervenciones tendientes a revalorizar uno de los siete conjuntos arquitectónicos Inka investigados en forma intensiva en El Shincal de Quimivíl con la aplicación de las normas internacionales que rigen este tipo de actividad. El diagnóstico de los rasgos arquitectónicos Inka que conforman el conjunto urbano, los "componentes de contextos de derrumbe " y la aplicación de la técnica de anastilosis bajo el principio de reversibilidad son los temas básicos de esta entrega. Paralelamente explicaremos los mecanismos arqueológicos desarrollados en la intervención de la kallanka 1 (K 1) inicialmente diseñados para examinar los locus de actividad contenidos en su interior, el proceso de formación del sitio desde su fundación hasta su abandono, los eventos postdeposicionales, y su revalorización arquitectónica.
Las estrategias aplicadas en este caso pueden ser predictivas para otros asentamientos con arquitectura en piedra del Noroeste argentino y no excluyentes del período Inka. Es ostensible que el caso de la K 1 plantea perspectivas de análisis y respuestas técnicas para proteger el patrimonio arqueológico que hasta el momento no fueron tenidos en cuenta en la arqueología de Argentina. Estas falencias han sido frecuentes entre los arqueólogos, acostumbrados a privilegiar la información estrictamente científica, usualmente para beneficio personal (vg. curricular) por sobre la protección, conservación y revalorización del patrimonio.

ABSTRACT:
The paper presents the results of a sequence of interventions geared towards giving new value to one of the seven Inka arquitectural groups investigated intensely at the Shincal of Quimivil, during which international norms regulating this activity were applied. The basic topics of this paper are the diagnosis of the Inka architectural features make up the urban assemblage, the "context of collapse components" and the application of anastilosis technics based on the principle of reversibility. At the same time we will explain the archaeological mechanisms developed during the intervention on the kallanka 1 (K 1), designed to examine the locus of activity within it, the formation process of the site since its founding until it was abandoned, the postdepositional events, and their architectural revaluation.
The strategies used in this case could be taken as predictive for other settlements with stone architecture in the Argentine North West and do not exclude the Inka period. It is obvious that the K 1 case sets up perspectives of analysis and technical answers for protecting the archaeological patrimony that, until now, have not been taken into account in Argentine archaeology. Archaeologist shave frequently disregarded these issues and usually give priority to strictly scientific information, which generally benefits their personal goals (e.g. curriculum) rather than the protection, conservation and revaluation of the patrimony.

The Grolier Codex (Codice Maya de Mexico, CMM) is discussed in the context of the archaeoastronomy of the ancient Americas on pages 98-99 of the March 1990 National Geographic Magazine article "America's Ancient Skywatchers" by John B. Carlson. One of four known ancient Maya books, the Grolier Codex depicts different manifestations of the planet Venus; the column of glyphs on the left of each panel records days in a 104-year Venus almanac. These plaster-coated bark-paper pages, carbon-dated to the 13th century, represent only half of the 20-page original. A numbered photographic arrangement of the Grolier Codex depictes the author's discovery that Codex pages 10 and 11 are actually two parts of the same "page 10".  Carlson clarifies the identities of Venus deities depicted in the Grolier Codex from a comparison of images from the Cacaxtla murals and links the images of the Grolier Codex with ancient Maya astronomically timed ritual warfare and sacrifice. RESUMEN: Para facilitar la compresión de este análisis y el aporte de esta crónica, he decidido organizar el trabajo partiendo de la introducción, donde sitúo el papel de las crónicas en el estudio del Perú prehispánico, su arriesgada utilización como fuente principal para la reconstrucción del pasado y la posibilidad de un mejor aprovechamiento de estas, desde un contraste con otras perspectivas o vertientes de estudio (entre ellas la Arqueología). Siguiendo el orden tratare brevemente el análisis del contexto histórico y las influencias en el pensamiento de quien elaboró dicho documento histórico (herramientas útiles para una comprensión cabal). Las fuentes de dicha obra y el origen de la información recaudada, son importantes conocimientos que ayudan también en esta tarea. A continuación, prosigo a tratar brevemente la estructura y el argumento. Por último, y para finalizar, paso a señalar los aportes de este importante documento histórico en el conocimiento del pasado prehispánico y la historia de los Incas.

Sixteenth-century Spanish evangelization was initially haphazard and varied, producing a patchwork of Andean Catholic converts whose formalized commitment to the new religion (baptisms, marriage rites, funerals) hinged on regional priests. In the 1560s CE, a revitalization movement known as Taki Onqoy (Quechua: “dancing sickness”) fostered a population of highland Andean peoples who actively rejected Spanish traditions, religious beliefs, and practices. This article presents results from the first archaeological study of Taki Onqoy. Ceramic, faunal, and mortuary data suggest that rather than a monolithic body of individuals who denied or rejected Catholicism, Andeans were entangled within the two religious sects.

En el sitio arqueológico de Samaipata está emplazada la mayor obra ceremonial de
arte rupestre de América latina y el mundo: una imponente y gigantesca mole de piedra
arenisca cuarzosa rojiza muy deleznable, completamente labrada en su dorso.
A pesar de su carácter excepcional este sitio, conocido como “El Fuerte”, ha sido poco
estudiado. Los primeros trabajos arqueológicos científicos y sistemáticos datan apenas
de finales del siglo XX, con el Proyecto de Investigación Arqueológica de Samaipata
(PIAS) creado bajo el impulso de la misión arqueológica alemana de la universidad de
Bonn. Estos trabajos han permitido evidenciar diferentes fases de ocupación y delimitar
una cronología general del sitio que demuestra una presencia de culturas pre-incaicas
desde por lo menos los albores del Horizonte medio hacia 1.000 d.C., seguidas por dos
fases incaicas e incluso una española, fechada de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI.
Esta publicación reúne por primera vez diferentes estudios arqueológicos sobre ‘El
Fuerte’. Único en su género, el sitio de Samaipata es también desde 1998 Patrimonio
Cultural de la Humanidad. Un patrimonio frágil, que guarda todavía muchos de sus
secretos, pero también reveló algunos de ellos para el conocimiento de nuestro pasado.
Contribuir a este conocimiento es el objetivo de esta compilación, que ofrece por
primera vez un plano detallado de la roca, susceptible de servir de base para futuras
investigaciones.

El mundo de los Inkas, su origen, su esplendor y su decadencia. Sus conquistas militares, su economía, su organización social y religiosa, reflejados a través de una profunda investigación regional, que tiene en el establecimiento Shincal de Quimivíl su vórtice y en el cuarto inferior del Impelió, denominado KOLLASUYO, su territorio de influencia. A pe sar de que la cuestión inka ha sido una de las mas explotadas en la historia de la literatura indígena americana, pocos trabajos como éste ofrecen una visión antropológica tan detallada, precisa y explicativa. Todo ello gracias a un cuidadoso estudio de una de las capitales de provincia, su entorno regional y el formidable camino del inka que las ligaba al legendario Cuzco.
No escapan a estas investigaciones los estudios entorno al derrotero seguido por las expediciones españolas en su invasión y conquista del universo indígena del Norte argentino del siglo XVI, utilizando en gran parte los caminos del inka construidos un siglo atras. Tampoco los eventos historicos de las rebeliones indígenas entorno a la lejana Londres de la Nueva Inglaterra, fundada a la vera de El Shincal en 1558 y una de las primeras ciudades implantadas por la corona española.
El Shincal de Quimivíl, la ciudad de piedra y su ejido aparecen aquí con una sólida presencia en el firmamento arqueológico americano por mérito de una docena de especialistas conducidos por el director de esta obra.

This dissertation investigates local community experiences of Inka imperialism between the 15th and 16th centuries t in the central highlands of Peru. It builds on studies of Inka imperialism in the province, with a focus on social practices and rituals of a community among the Yauyos people of Huarochirí Province (modern Lima Department).

My theoretical framework builds on the concept of legibility from James Scott’s book, “Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed” (1998). In this view, states need to eliminate diversity and variability among their subjects in order to establish successful standardized polices. As one aspect of Scott’s model, legibility is the process through which states build an overarching and simplifying view of their subjects. The politics between empire and local subjects thus rest on the quality and depth of knowledge that states have of local practices, which in turn determine the degree of investment and cost-efficiency of the state in a specific area, and the negotiation of power dynamics between both parties.

In Huarochirí, I examine a continuous process of mediation of the Inka state’s prerogative to bureaucratize and reduce local variation in social practices and institutions with the deeply embedded practices of local peoples. My central argument is that the use of familiar cultural practices by the Inka to mediate, if not control, their expanding empire also created the social spaces for local polities to maintain, formalize, and, at times, expand their own cultural practices and traditions.

Through a detailed analysis of Huarochirí’s unique colonial documentary corpus, combined with archaeological reconnaissance and excavation, my dissertation provides a history of the Inka and their subjects from a local perspective rather than through the lenses of official state history as filtered through the perspectives of Spanish colonial actors.

This book analyzes the geometric boulder sculptures the Inka are known for in the Cusco region.  The methodologies used link archaeology, ethnohistory, and ethnography.  It is argued that Pachakuti Inka Yupanki, the ninth ruler, authored the geometric carvings and applied them in selected settings (including Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu) as part of a stone ideology devised to expand and validate the Inka empire.  The geometric style is evaluated in comparison with per-Inka stone wak'as and modern stone rituals.

In the Amazonian “Eyebrow of the Jungle” in northeastern Peru, an
archaeological complex known as Posic has recently been investigated.
Preliminary results comparing ethno-historical and archaeological
records show that the site of Posic has the potential to illuminate the
Amazonian people of the past; the Inca, Chachapoyas, and a local
rainforest culture.

Hatun Xauxa constituyó una de las principales instalaciones incaicas establecidas a la vera del Qhapaq Ñan desde donde partía un camino que atravesaba la cordillera de Pariacaca y llegaba al centro ceremonial de Pachacamac. En este trabajo se presenta una síntesis de los resultados de las intervenciones realizadas en el sitio por Qhapaq Ñan – Sede Nacional, como parte de un proyecto de investigación con fines de diagnóstico para su puesta en valor. La evidencia obtenida confirma que su principal ocupación corresponde a tiempos incaicos, cuando llegó a tener una extensión y población que superaban aquellas de otras instalaciones del Chinchaysuyu como Huánuco Pampa. De otro lado, la particular configuración del asentamiento indica un énfasis en su relación con el paisaje circundante, al mismo tiempo que una notable organización interna asociada a actividades diferenciadas. Con estos datos se espera contribuir al estudio y a las discusiones futuras sobre el carácter de los establecimientos estatales del Tawantinsuyu.

Se presenta un estudio de las formas sociopolíticas indígenas de Tarapacá mediante un enfoque histórico y arqueológico para el siglo XV y XVI. Se sistematiza la información correspondiente a los habitantes que residían en forma permanente o estacional entre la franja litoral del océano Pacífico, entre el río Loa y Camarones, un extenso territorio colindante con los cacicazgos de Tacna al norte y las provincias incaicas de Atacama al sur, Caranga y Quillacas, al este. El análisis cualitativo de la información local y regional permite avanzar en la lectura de los datos arqueológicos y documentales, sugiriendo que durante la primera mitad del siglo XVI se habría desplegado una organización geopolítica caracterizada por la dinámica segmentaria de las poblaciones tarapaqueñas y el aparato provincial cuzqueño. Este trabajo propone que los españoles, al momento de la invasión, pudieron observar en esta región el funcionamiento de las jurisdicciones incaicas o wamani, a partir de lo cual se deberían analizar las posteriores transformaciones coloniales ocurridas dentro del virreinato peruano.

We present a study about indigenous socio-political formations of Tarapacá region through the sixteenth century. Information is systematized from early documental sources related to populations residing at Pacific’s coastline between the Loa and Camarones rivers, an area bordered by the chiefdoms of Tacna and the Inca province of Atacama, Caranga and Quillaca. Discussion of regional and local historical and archaeological sources form the beginnings of Colonial period (1535-1571), allows us to define settlements, economic and ethnic levels of sociopolitical organization. The available data suggest the establishment of a cultural hierarchy and political affiliation which were linked to the operation of an Inca province or wamani at the moments of the Spanish conquest of the Tarapacá region.

This thesis discusses the modes of interaction in Charazani, Bolivia to understand the forms of political control by the Tiwanaku and Inka polities in the region. To identify the modes of interaction (vertical archipelago, prestige goods economy, feasting, and emulation through materialization of ideology), I examine the variation of ceramic types across thirty-five sites in different ecological zones in Charazani.  In addition, I explore ceramic variation across four time periods (Formative, Middle Horizon, Late Intermediate Period, and Inka) to denote changes related to the rise and fall of the Tiwanaku and Inka polities.

This work attempts to tread new paths in mountain archaeological investigation. Although high
altitude Inka sanctuaries have been extensively treated during the last years, the study of other
sites, located at lower heights, also related to this kind of ritual has been notoriously relegated.
This paper constitutes an approach to the study of this type of settlement from the case of the site of
El Apunao del Chinchillar (4,800 msnm) located in the Nevados de Cachi mountain range (Salta,
Argentina), whose first systematic investigations are presented here.
Our intent is to humanize this prehispanic landscape, considering the people who inhabited these
heights, who experienced it every day, attempting to understand the way in which these subjects
conducted themselves and perceived this three-dimensional space and to understand the dynamics
of these settlements. It is at these sites where Tawantinsuyu achieves an absolute control of the
ritual and displays all its symbolic paraphernalia. In this way, we will clearly observe how social
practices related to imperial power and ideology gain its material expression at these new spaces,
rituals and buildings.

Öz Atatürk'ün Türk Tarih Tezi kapsamında başlayan ve Tahsin Mayatepek raporları ile temelleri atılan 'Mayalar ve Türklük' çalışmaları konusunda tar-tışmalar hâlâ süregitmektedir. Genel olarak Kuzey Amerika'yı kapsayan bu konu 'Mayalar ve Türklük' ve 'Kızılderililerin Türklülüğü' başlıkları altında irdelenmektedir. Kronolojisi bu kültürlerle ilişkili ancak topografyası farklı olan Karayip Bölgesi ise dikkatlerden kaçmıştır. 'Taino' olarak anılan Karayip Yerlilerinin 'mitolojilerinde zikredilen isimlerin sessel biçimlerinde' ve 'aynı za-manda fonksiyonlarında' Türk Dili ve Mitolojisi ile nitelikli benzerlikler vardır. Tainoların yaşamsal mekânları, yönetim biçimleri, ürettikleri sanatsal figür ve objeleri açısından da benzerlikler kurulabilecek düzeydedir. Bu güne kadar Karayip Bölgesi Kültürü, Mitolojisi ve Sanatı hakkında ülkemizde yapılmış bir yayın veya araştırma olmamıştır. Resumen:
Durante su dominio sobre del altiplano, los valles del sur de la actual Bolivia y extremo boreal de Argentina, los inkas explotaron las riquezas mineras y agrícolas de Porco, Chayanta, Tupiza, Suipacha y Tarija, utilizando como mitmaq y jatumrunas las naciones chichas, carangas y soras. Estas actividades determinaron la construcción de ramales de capacñam en sentido transversal, que conectaron esas regiones con el capacñam principal que corría desde el Cuzco al Kollasuyu y varios pucarás para resguardarlas de las invasiones guaraníes. A pesar de las transformaciones en su estatus y la movilidad espacial que se les impuso, los chichas nunca olvidaron su identidad étnica y territorial. Incluso durante la administración española perdieron su prestigio y territorios en represalia por haber sido «hijos privilegiados del Tawantinsuyu».

Abstract:
During their dominion of the plateau and valleys of the south of present-day Bolivia and boreal north of Argentina, the Inka mining and agricultural enterprises of Porco, Chayanta, Tupiza, Suipacha and Tarija operated using as mitmaq and jatunrunas people belonging to the nations of Chichas, Carangas and Soras. These locations and activities determined the routes within this región of the Inka road, capacñam. The road connected these regions with the main route of capacñam that ran from the capital of Cuzco to the Kollasuyu, as well as several pucaras (fortresses) which had been placed to protect against guaraníes invasions. In spite of the transformations in their status and their movement as mitmaq, the Chichas never forgot their ethnic and territorial identity.

Se describe unos tramos de caminos incaicos (investigados por el autor en los años de 1972–1973) en dos
regiones de los Andes peruanos, es decir en la cuenca del Río Alto Chicama (Provincia Otuzco, Departamento La
Libertad) y en la cuenca del Río Huaura (Provincia Oyón, Departamento Lima). En la región de Alto Chicama
se han registrado siete tramos de caminos andinos que corren en la altitud de 2850–3700 m. En general tienen un
carácter local y están vinculadas con los asentamientos de la cultura Yuraccama (siglos X–XVI). Por la región de
Oyón (cuenca del Huaura) pasa un ramal del camino principal andino (Qhapaq Ñan). Se ha investigado la sección
de 10 kilómetros de longitud, desde el valle de Pucayacu hasta el paso por la Cordillera Rumi Cruz (4800 m.) El
punto donde el camino atraviesa el Río Pucayacu (4410 m.) es el más interesante. Se ha construido aquí un puente
del cual llevan escaleras anchas hacia una loma con varios edifi cios interpretados como el punto de control inca
y la estación de mensajeros chasqui.

Historical and archaeological records help shed light on the production, ritual practices, and personhood of cult objects characterizing the central Peruvian highlands after ca. AD 200. Colonial accounts indicate that descendant groups made and venerated stone images of esteemed forebears as part of small-scale local funerary cults. Prayers and supplications help illuminate how different artifact forms were seen as honored family members (forebears, elders, parents, siblings). Archaeology, meanwhile, shows the close associations between carved monoliths, tomb repositories, and restricted cult spaces. The converging lines of evidence are consistent with the hypothesis that production of stone images was the purview of family/lineage groups. As the cynosures of cult activity and devotion, the physical forms of ancestor effigies enabled continued physical engagements, which vitalized both the idol and descendant group.
