Portuguese Colonial Empire

Introdução A índia, Macau e Timor constituem colónias portuguesas muito diferentes, mas que entre si estavam unidas pelo facto de se situarem fora de África. À semelhança do que aconteceu na época, chamo-lhes as colónias do Oriente, expressão que está apenas situada na geografia e longe das conotações culturais ou civilizacionais que frequente-mente encontramos (Reis, 2018b, pp. 5-7). A análise de diferentes aspetos destas colónias tem de ser, naturalmente, integrada no contexto do mundo colonial da época, nacional ou estrangeiro. Dele ressaltam imediata-mente três elementos essenciais:-A administração portuguesa encontrava-se já numa conjuntura de mudança, tendo o pós-guerra condicionado uma evolução/adaptação às novas realidades;-A existência de um organismo internacional, com interferência nas questões colo-niais, quer mais diretamente, quer pela interferência noutros campos que interessa-vam a Portugal;-As colónias portuguesas continuavam ameaçadas por outros países, na sequência de uma situação anterior e que a guerra não esmoreceu. Novos Perigos Coloniais Com efeito, ao terminar o conflito continuaram os rumores sobre as apetências estrangeiras, embora surgissem em novos palcos. Foi justamente num destes novos cenários, a Conferência de Paz (Oliveira, 2011; Oli-veira, 2014, pp. 469 e 477-478), que, além das movimentações em redor de outras colónias, se ouviram vozes que mostravam o interesse da França em relação à índia portuguesa. As notícias corriam também sobre Timor, anunciando a possível venda à Holanda, ou ao Japão; a Austrália mostrava, por isso, igual interesse pela parte portuguesa da ilha 1 .

ABSTRACT: The paper aims to study the life of one of the greatest poets of the lusophone world of the eighteenth century: Cláudio Manuel da Costa. Through the study of his life trajectory, from his childhood in the place that he lived in Ribeirão do Carmo until the fateful days of his obscure death in 1789, his biography is involuntarily a brief summary of the history of Colonial Brazil (more specifically of Minas Gerais) and of Portugal in the eighteenth century, highlighting events and interesting historical aspects of this period such as the mining cycle in Minas Gerais, the daily life of the University of Coimbra in the mid-eighteenth century, the repercussion of the Enlightenment in the Lusophone world, Archadism, the religious life, popular festivals, customs and values of the time, eighteenth-century poetry, the Pombaline administration, colonial revolts such as the Inconfidência Mineira and others.
                In order to analyze this historical panorama of the Luso-Brazilian world of the eighteenth century through the life of the poet, I will use as main source the biography of Cláudio Manuel da Costa published by the historian Laura de Mello e Souza in 2011 and academic publications or materials related to the theme, in order to enrich the research and better illustrate this historical period.

Neste artigo compósito, proponho uma leitura não-antropocêntrica da história territorial brasileira. Na Parte I, procuro reconstruir teoricamente o conceito de território de modo a 'subjetificar' toda e qualquer coisa terrena, descentrando a agência histórica. Para isso, sugiro encarar o território como um campo vital contínuo (i.e., sem 'buracos'), diversificado e todo-abrangente de que os seres humanos participam, como condição necessária de sua existência terrena. A partir dessa perspectiva, estar no território significa 'vibrar' na mesma faixa de frequência vital dos outros seres e coisas naturais, influenciando suas atividades e sendo influenciado por elas. Desenvolvida essa teoria, passo a utilizá-la, na Parte II do artigo, para a construção de uma breve narrativa acerca do encontro e das adaptações recíprocas entre florestas costeiras, ameríndios, colonos neoeuropeus e formigas cortadeiras, durante a colonização portuguesa. Between 1500 and 1950, most human societies on the planet fell under the control of European colonial regimes, whether for a few years or for several centuries. No total view of the myriad responses to empire on the part of the colonized is possible: the impact of empire itself varied dramatically, as plural and overlapping systems were applied in differential ways. The multiplicity of colonial arrangements might touch colonized people directly, indirectly or hardly at all. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, untouched areas were shrinking rapidly. The effects of economic globalization and cultural convergence accompanied colonial expansion to create a more complex imperial world order that helped to naturalize racial and cultural hegemony. The distinctiveness of European colonial empire was in its creation of a stable, indeed, legally rigidified category of the colonized “native”, excluded from rights, political participation, and even from history itself. However, viewed from another perspective, colonized peoples have been very much the agents of history and key to the transformation of the modern world.

Across Europe, the parish church has stood for centuries at the centre of local communities; it was the focal point of its religious life, the rituals performed there marked the stages of life from the cradle to the grave. Nonetheless the church itself artistically and architecturally stood apart from the parish community. It was often the largest and only stone-built building in a village; it was legally distinct being subject to canon law, as well as consecrated for the celebration of religious rites. The buildings associated with the ‘cure of souls’ were sacred sites or holy places, where humanity interacted with the divine.

In spite of the importance of the parish church, these buildings have generally not received the same attention from historians as non-parochial places of worship. This collection of essays redresses this balance and reflects on the parish church across a number of confessions – Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed and Anti-Trinitarian – during the early modern period. Rather than providing a series of case studies of individual buildings, each essay looks at the evolution of parish churches in response to religious reform as well as confessional change and upheaval. They examine aspects of their design and construction; furnishings and material culture; liturgy and the use of the parish church. While these essays range widely across Europe, the volume also considers how religious provision and the parish church were translated into a global context with colonial and commercial expansion in the Americas and Asia. This interdisciplinary volume seeks to identify what was distinctive about the parish church for the congregations that gathered in them for worship and for communities across the early modern world.

Este estudo, partindo da história do mito sebástico e do seu papel central no padrão da autognose nacional de Portugal, analisa como é que a literatura pós-25 de Abril reescreve e reinterpreta a narrativa mítica do sebastianismo.  Os quatro romances que constituem o corpus analítico do trabalho – nomeadamente O Mosteiro (1980) de Agustina Bessa-Luís, As Naus (1988) de António Lobo Antunes, Jornada de África (1989) de Manuel Alegre, e O Conquistador (1990) de Almeida Faria –  através de diversas estratégias discursivas realizam o mesmo objetivo, isto é, a desconstrução e a profanação do mito de D. Sebastião. Desta forma, o estudo analisa como é que estas quatro obras ficcionais do corpus reinterpretam e reescrevem com a ajuda de poéticas diferentes a narrativa do soberano mítico dentro das matrizes da cultura pós-revolucionária e pós-moderna. / Present study demonstrates how four
novels of the post-revolutionary period deconstruct and rewrite the myth of king Sebastian. The four novels of the analytic corpus – namely Agustina Bessa-Luís’ O Mosteiro (1980), As Naus (1988) from António Lobo Antunes, Jornada de África (1989) from Manuel Alegre, and Almeida Faria’s O Conquistador (1990) – arrive through diverse discursive and poetic strategies to the same conclusion: to the very deconsruction and profanation of the national myth and the mythical figure of the king. Thus, the study concentrates on how these four fictional works rewrite and reinterpret the myth within the frame of post-revolutionary, post-modern Portuguese culture with the help of divergent poetics of the novel

Les guerres coloniales menées entre 1961 et 1975 et la décolonisation accélérée et chaotique des cinq dernières colonies portugaises en Afrique accélèrent la fin de la dictature salazariste puis marcéliniste au Portugal et contribuent largement, dans la douleur, à la mise en place  d'un processus de démocratisation, aboutissant à l'entrée du Portugal dans la CEE en 1986.

This article examines Portuguese colonial and military activities at Macau during the Boxer Uprising of 1900, connecting developments across the border in Guangdong with initiatives undertaken by the colonial authorities in Macau. The Portuguese perceived the situation to be serious enough that substantial reinforcements were eventually sent from the metropole, in addition to various other measures taken to strengthen the colony's defenses. Portugal also used Macau as a base to coordinate the operations of its consulates in China, and exploited the Boxer debacle to press for new concessions and other advantages at China's expense. At the end, it is hoped that the limited and relatively unknown role played by Portugal, in conjunction with the larger kaleidoscope of events around Macau, may be better illuminated.

In the present thesis, I approach some aspects of the History of Goa, since the Constitutional Monarchy until the foundation of “Estado Novo”, viewed by its intellectual elites. The paths and standings of these elites were built in the crossroads produced by the construction of the post-Enlightenment currents of thought and of political and cultural practices, by the affirmation of contemporary colonialism and its questioning by the anticolonial nationalist movements, as well as by the evaluation of local, national and international contexts in which they were inscribed. In these crossroads, these elites contributed to the construction of the Goan currents of political and cultural thought and to the edification of its modernity, in a period marked by the growing discussion of the relations between politics and culture. Within these frames, they thought about the Goan condition, the Goan identity and about the local, Portuguese and Indian future in a continuously changing world. Constituting an approach of local history, this thesis represents an effort to contribute to contemporary Goan reflection, but also represents the intention to underline how contemporary history, in a permanent dialog between theory and practice, edified itself in an unstable balance between ideals and principles of universal aspiration and the impulse to distinguish inheritances, constrains and individual goals of particular societies. As such, this local was also assumed as a relevant perspective in the debate around the construction of contemporary thought and political action in general and Portuguese in particular, having specially in mind the discussion of liberalism and democracy, in face of the colonial question and in face of the imposition of modernity as the proper temporality to evaluate societies and peoples and to project their futures.


Nesta tese abordo alguns aspectos da história de Goa, desde a Monarquia Constitucional até à fundação do Estado Novo, perspectivados pelas suas elites intelectuais. Os percursos e posicionamentos destas elites edificaram-se nas encruzilhadas geradas pela construção das correntes de pensamento e das práticas políticas e culturais pós-iluministas, pela afirmação do colonialismo contemporâneo e pelo seu questionamento pelos movimentos nacionalistas anticoloniais, e, ainda, pela avaliação dos contextos locais, nacionais e internacionais em que se inscreveram. Nestas encruzilhadas estas elites foram contribuindo para a construção das correntes de pensamento político e cultural goesas e para a edificação da sua modernidade, numa época marcada pela crescente problematização das relações entre política e cultura. Dentro destas balizas problematizaram a condição goesa, a identidade goesa e o futuro local, português e indiano num mundo marcado pelo signo da mudança. Constituindo uma abordagem de história local, representa um esforço de contribuir para a reflexão goesa contemporânea, mas representa igualmente um sublinhar de como a história contemporânea, num diálogo permanente entre teoria e prática, se edificou num balanceamento instável entre princípios e ideais de aspiração universal e o impulso de distinção de heranças, condicionalismos ou desígnios próprios das sociedades particulares. Como tal, este local foi também pensado como perspectiva relevante na problematização da construção do pensamento e da acção política contemporâneos em geral e portugueses em particular, sobretudo do liberalismo e da democracia, em face da questão colonial e em face da imposição da modernidade como temporalidade própria para avaliar as sociedades e os povos e projectar o seu futuro.

Para além das atividades evangelizadora e missionária, a Companhia de Jesus teve destaque no estabelecimento de boticas e santas casas em locais onde os médicos e boticários especializados não eram encontrados. Nas reduções do Paraguai, no Brasil, além de partes ainda mais distantes, como Macau e Goa, esses religiosos tomaram para si a tarefa de cuidar, também, dos corpos dos habitantes, desenvolvendo, fabricando, aplicando, distribuindo e comercializando toda sorte de medicamentos. Entre os séculos XVI e XVIII, é encontrada uma série de obras que registrava suas experiências e indicações para a manipulação e aplicação desses remédios, verdadeiras coleções de receitas que conjugavam os saberes dos médicos mais destacados daqueles tempos com as preparações elaboradas em suas boticas, muitas vezes com ingredientes locais. No projeto de investigação em desenvolvimento, brevemente apresentado nesta nota de pesquisa, lança-se luz sobre quatro coleções de receitas produzidas, provavelmente por portugueses, no âmbito da Companhia entre os séculos XVII e XVIII, livros que, em grande medida, encontram-se manuscritos e que dão pistas sobre a ampla rede de informações e conhecimento produzida e transmitida entre os inacianos. A proposta busca interrogar a atuação dos jesuítas na confecção, elaboração e disseminação de mezinhas, considerando a organização das obras, o recurso ao conhecimento não religioso e local e as doenças ali mencionadas e medicadas.

The second article, by Everton V. Machado, focuses on Os Brahmanes (1866) by Francisco Luís Gomes (1829–1869). Here Machado considers Gomes’s novel, which takes place not in Goa but British India, to be the first modern work of fiction to denounce the systematic abuses of colonialism in South Asia, suggesting the phasing out of European domination and endorsing racial intermixture. As such, Machado’s analysis opens up new perspectives on what ought to be considered a foundational narrative in Portuguese-language post-colonial literature. There is much of interest here for Anglophone scholars, as the novel’s representation of the notorious 1857 Indian Rebellion from an unfamiliar coign of vantage exemplifies. Ultimately, Machado argues, Gomes’s novel is deeply ambiguous: if anti-colonial on many levels, in accordance with the author’s liberal values, it also operates within a certain colonial discourse, showing traces of Orientalism and even a Lusotropicalist bent avant la lettre. Indeed, in a manner that resists any anachronistic reading through twentieth-century Indian nationalism, one might say that Os Brahmanes presents the solution to the wrongs of colonialism as even more thorough colonisation. To put it another way: for the elite Catholic Gomes– of the Chardó caste to boot, with all that this identity entailed as regards the inner jockeying for power in Goa’s nineteenth century – affirming the proselytising, putatively absorbent Portuguese model of colonial rule, which technically put such individuals on an equal footing with metropolitans, the best solution to the problems of India would be the Goanisation of the subcontinent.

The aim of this thesis is to study the government of the “Estado da Índia” by D. João de Castro (governor and viceroy between 1545 and 1548). His rule witnessed a period of political and military tensions, during the war with the sultanate of Gujarat (its peak being reached with the siege of the Portuguese fortress of Diu, in 1546) and Bijapur, and the reinforcement of the policy and strategy of king D. João III for the Indies. Castro’s government was marked by the military campaigns he enforced and the image of power that he himself projected. Thus, this thesis is aimed at understanding the role of the government of D. João de Castro in the construction of the “Estado da Índia” and the Portuguese presence in Asia. At the same time, it surveys the historiography about this figure of the Portuguese expansion in search of an understanding of the processes by which Castro was made into a myth, along with offering a critical and objective vision of his government.
To this purpose, the thesis divides into four, departing from an overall account of the history of “Estado da Índia” to come to an analysis of the government of D. João de Castro. The first part reassesses the previous knowledge about the Portuguese presence in Asia during the first half of the 16th century, highlighting the main elements in the formation of the “Estado da Índia” as the setting the second part, D. João de Castro’s government. The second part thus utilises a more narrative approach to the personal background and career of D. João de Castro, beginning with his cursus honorum before nomination as governor of the “Estado da Índia” in 1545. From this point onwards, his government is chronologically analysed. The third and fourth parts are the core of the critical and historiographical evaluation of this government. Here, warfare organization and administration are discussed, evaluating the human, material and financial means, with the aim to reconstruct and understand the process by which D. João de Castro sustained his campaigns logistically. Following this, the political and symbolic impact of his rule is examined, focusing on the building of a princely court in Goa, assessing the practices of government, the reinforcement of the networks maintained by the governor and the construction of an imperial image for the “Estado da Índia”. All these elements were aimed at centralising and strengthening the real and symbolic power of the Portuguese king through his highest official in Asia. Lastly, the thesis analyses the ways in which the memory of this governor and of his governance were created, lasting in the Portuguese collective memory, from its origins in chronicles from this period and from projects commemorating D. João de Castro led by his grandchildren, who used his memory for their self-aggrandising.
More than a historiographical exercise of revision, this thesis seeks to contribute to the understanding of the formation of the “Estado da Índia” and the Portuguese maritime empire in the 16th century. The government of D. João de Castro is then understood as part of the strategy of king D. João III to organise a vast Empire of which the “Estado da Índia” was but one component, a piece projected into a diversified whole.

A presente tese de doutoramento tem como objecto de estudo a governação do “Estado da Índia” em tempo de D. João de Castro (governador e vice-rei, entre 1545 e 1548). A sua acção decorreu num conturbado período de tensão político-militar, no âmbito da guerra movida aos sultanatos do Guzerate (cujo principal momento se materializou no cerco à fortaleza portuguesa de Diu em 1546) e de Bijapur, e de reforço da política e da estratégia Joaninas para a Ásia. Este governo ficou indelevelmente marcado pelas campanhas militares empreendidas e pela imagem de poder que o próprio Castro consolidou. Assim, esta investigação procura compreender qual o papel do governo de D. João de Castro na construção do “Estado da Índia” e da presença portuguesa na Ásia. Paralelamente, pretende-se também revisitar a historiografia sobre esta figura da Expansão portuguesa e captar os processos pelos quais foi mitificada, permitindo uma visão crítica e objectiva quanto à sua acção governativa.
Para tal, organizou-se o estudo em quarto partes, passando de uma visão ampla da história do “Estado da Índia” para um estudo analítico da governação de D. João de Castro. A primeira parte reavalia aquilo que sabemos sobre a presença portuguesa na Ásia na primeira metade do século XVI, destacando as principais linhas de força na formação do “Estado da Índia”, delineando assim o pano de fundo sobre o qual a governação em estudo se foca. A segunda parte, de carácter narrativo, segue o percurso pessoal e a carreira de D. João de Castro, explicitando o seu cursus honorum antes de ser nomeado capitão-mor e governador do “Estado da Índia” em 1545, e avaliando exaustivamente o seu governo, seguindo a sua evolução cronológica. A terceira e quarta partes constituem o cerne da avaliação crítica e historiográfica deste governo. Num primeiro momento debruçamo-nos sobre a organização e administração da guerra. Procuramos reconstituir e apreender o processo pelo qual D. João de Castro conseguiu sustentar logisticamente as suas campanhas, avaliando os meios humanos, materiais e financeiros para tal. De seguida, examinamos o impacto político e simbólico deste governo. Observando a estruturação de uma corte em Goa, visámos compreender as suas práticas governativas, o reforço das redes clientelares de o Governador e a construção de uma imagem imperial do “Estado da Índia”, elementos que concorreram para centrar e fortalecer o poder, real e simbólico, do mais alto oficial régio na Ásia. Por fim, analisámos a forma como a memória deste governador e do seu governo se firmou na memória colectiva portuguesa, fruto da cronística da época e de alguns projectos memorialistas dos seus netos, que procuraram aproveitar a figura de D. João de Castro para engrandecerem a sua própria acção.
Mais do que um simples revisionismo historiográfico, esta tese pretende contribuir para a compreensão da formação do “Estado da Índia” e do próprio Império Marítimo Português no século XVI. A governação de D. João de Castro é assim entendida como parte de uma estratégia de D. João III na estruturação de um extenso Império em que o “Estado da Índia” era compreendido como uma dos componentes enquanto peça projectada e concretizada num todo plural.

This essay argues for recognizing a form of orientalism peculiar to Goa. This peculiarity results from the manner in which two different types of orientalisms combine with one another to produce Goan orientalism. These two types of Orientalism would be Goa Portuguesa, a strain of Lusotropicalism, and Goa Indica, a strain of Indian nationalism which is in turn a product of British Indian orientalism. The terrain of Goan orientalism is sketched in this essay through a discussion of the recently published coffee-table book Moda Goa: History and Style by fashion
designer and stylist Wendell Rodricks (2012). Despite being the work of an amateur historian, I would argue that this work needs to be given academic attention, for it is largely the popular press that determines the manner in which history is understood, and the manner in which these histories are then used to frame personal as well as larger group or collective narratives.

This paper studies Philip II, King of Spain and Portugal attempts to reform the Portuguese captaincy in Timor islands that were prior a royal privilege given to Dominican missionaries. The royal appointment of a captain turned the territorial and trade control of the islands, rich in white sandalwood, to the crown, thereafter engaged in and unsuccessful strategy aiming to connected them with Spanish Philippines.

Palmares era uma vasta extensão no nordeste do Brasil, com uma capital chamada Macaco, um rei chamado Ganga Zumba, o seu sobrinho guerreiro Zumbi, e com uma sociedade de escravizados agora fugitivos que se auto-organizavam naquilo a que chamavam, por referência à terra de origem da maioria deles, Angola Janga — a Pequena Angola, do lado do Atlântico oposto ao da Angola Grande em África." Este capítulo incide na procura e delimitação de um corpus de títulos e colecções de livros, publicado em Portugal no século XX e até à independência das colónias africanas, que se centre no temário imperial, colonial, do exótico como outro ou espaço diferente, e sobre o qual recai uma conotação positiva, assimilada a uma doutrina de domínio ultramarino. Identificam-se as lógicas da edição desse corpus a partir de elementos axiais predominantes ou em articulação: celebratório, de denúncia, descritivo, prescritivo, entre outros, alicerçando o exercício na premissa de que se trate de obras e séries que defendam a vocação colonial portuguesa, plasmada em ideias como missão civilizadora, desiderato histórico irreprimível ou excepcionalidade como marca identitária da nação. A ambição não é compreender a totalidade da actividade editorial durante o período mencionado, mas apresentar um observatório susceptível de demonstrar que a produção – e, em última análise, a circulação – de livros, no que aos temas do império colonial português diz respeito, habita um mundo social imbricado nas dinâmicas político-históricas prevalecentes em Portugal.

Este presente trabalho aborda uma discussão acerca do período pombalino na história do império português, em especial sobre as reformas regalistas desenvolvidas no interior do mundo reinol e colonial pelo ministro marquês de Pombal e seus colaboradores. Verifica como se deu a atuação do governador Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado no Grão-Pará e Maranhão nos anos de 1751-1759 a partir da constatação de uma aliança que o governador travou com o bispo daquela diocese, Miguel de Bulhões. A monografia propõe a discussão do perfil regalista do prelado, uma vez que suas ações foram totalmente alinhadas com os objetivos das reformas pombalinas para a região norte da América portuguesa.  Nossa proposta adota como metodologia uma análise crítica do discurso do bispo Miguel de Bulhões a partir de cartas que o prelado remeteu e recebeu dos diversos personagens políticos do império. O trabalho sugere ainda que o regalismo foi uma política de estado pombalina que teve por objetivo alinhar os eclesiásticos aos interesses do Estado, para que a soberania e a autoridade monárquica fossem reforçadas.

Diante dos desafios e incertezas que envolveram a abolição da escravidão no Império Ultramarino Português no século XIX, houve intensa produção legal para regulação de novas formas de exploração do trabalho nas colônias portuguesas, que marcaria profundamente as relações sociais no interior das colônias em território africano até o fim do período colonial em 1975. Para além de discussões sobre a tipologia das relações de trabalho, esse texto procura, de forma breve, analisar a produção legislativa portuguesa que legitimou diversas formas de trabalho forçado em território colonial, focalizando, além de seus dispositivos legais, os embates e tensões políticas que envolveram a produção dos principais regulamentos de trabalho nas colônias nos séculos XIX e XX, que se muito relacionam aos impasses vividos para o legítimo acesso a cidadania dos trabalhadores negros em outras sociedades pós-emancipação.

В статье анализируются принципиальные сходства и различия в деятельности португальцев, голландцев и англичан в экономической зоне Индийского океана в раннее Новое время (XVI – начало XIX в.). Проводится её сравнение по поставленным целям, применявшимся методам и достигнутым результатам для индоокеанской экономики. Подчёркнута неразрывная связь экономических и внеэкономических аспектов деятельности европейцев на Востоке. Выделены факторы, объясняющие общее и особенное в действиях представителей разных европейских держав.

The article analyzes basic similarities and differences in the activity of the Portuguese, Dutch and English in the economic zone of the Indian Ocean in the early modern period (sixteenth – early nineteenth century). This activity is compared by the goals set by its agents, the methods used by them and the results achieved for the Indo-oceanic economy. The inseparable connection of economic and non-economic aspects of the European activity in the Orient is stressed. Factors explaining common and particular features in the activity of the representatives of different European powers are distinguished.

This article analyzes new dimensions of the process of racialization in eighteenth-century Brazil. It argues that colonial society did not racialize Africans as a homogeneous mass but used several social technologies to make sense of the diversity of their origins. The creation of blackness involved an intense production of knowledge on their origins by means of cultural and visual markers (mainly scarification) associated with the
tereotyping label ‘nação’ (nation), and at the same time the use of phenotypic markers that functioned as common denominators of their difference from Europeans. The article contends that these two dimensions of the construction of African difference were not successive, as if one were a stage of the other, as if society first dealt with the diversity of origins and then reduced them to the category ‘negro’. In fact these two instances were interdependent, relational, and hence facets of the same historical phenomenon.

la distancia en el gobierno de las monarquías ibéricas de la época moderna se abordará según diferentes enfoques. El objetivo es discutir trabajos inéditos en su primera versión, síntesis o estudios de caso. Finalmente, este seminario conducirá a la publicación de un libro compuesto por cuatro temas diferentes, todos ellos integrados en una problemática común.

Vencer a distância. Atores e práticas de governo dos impérios espanhol e português (séculos XV-XIX)
Este seminário visa concluir o projeto “Vencer la Distancia” iniciado em 2016. Será abordado o problema da distância no governo das monarquias ibéricas da época moderna segundo distintos focos. O objetivo é discutir trabalhos inéditos ainda em sua primeira versão, sínteses ou estudos de caso. Por fim, este seminário conduzirá à publicação de um livro composto por quatro temas diferentes, todos eles integrados a uma questão comum.

Vaincre la distance. Acteurs et pratiques du gouvernement des empires espagnol et portugais ( XVe-XIXe siècle)
Ce séminaire vise à conclure le projet « Vaincre la distance » entamé en 2016. Il abordera le problème de la distance dans le gouvernement des monarchies ibériques de l’ère moderne en faisant varier la focale : les contributions consistent en de denses études de cas et des synthèses surplombantes. L’objectif est de discuter des travaux inédits de chercheurs qui en sont encore à leur première version. In fine, ce séminaire conduira à la publication d’un livre composé de quatre thèmes différents tous intégrés dans une problématique commune.

A partir da análise de filmes visionados no ANIM ('Luanda, Cidade Feiticeira', de Ricardo Malheiro; 'São Paulo de Luanda', de António de Sousa; 'Férias em Lourenço Marques', de Miguel Spiguel; 'Safrique Safari', de Faria de Almeida, entre outros), bem como de entrevistas inéditas a técnicos que trabalharam em alguns destes filmes, a minha comunicação procura interrogar o documentário colonial (sobretudo em Angola e Moçambique), nos anos 50, 60 e 70, na sua dimensão turística. Quando é que o filme colonial foi (também) ‘turístico’? Em que sentido é que estes filmes se destacavam (ou não) dos modelos que se faziam e mostravam na metrópole? De que forma o projecto turístico servia o projecto colonial? Trata-se de uma investigação em curso, que está a ser desenvolvida no âmbito do projecto “Atrás da câmara: práticas de
visualidade e mobilidade no filme turístico português” (EXPL/IVCANT/1706/2013), financiado por fundos nacionais através da FCT/MCTES.

This paper studies the diffusion in Southeast Asia of the Holy houses of Mercy or "misericordias", after the Portuguese conquest of Malacca, in 1511. Powerful brotherhood of royal patronage, created in 1498 by queen Leonor (1458-1525), the "misericordias" spread throughout all the Portuguese colonial empire reaching the enclaves, fortresses and trade factories from Malacca to the Moluccas.
