Mobile seamless learning provides the foundation for new digital solutions capable of adapting the contents to the learner needs and contexts. Studies have shown that cancer prevention knowledge remains reduced in modern societies. Given the worldwide burden of cancer, there is a need to increase cancer literacy in the populations, namely through the development of innovative strategies. This paper describes a 3 months two-arm quasi-experimental effectiveness study of a new mobile seamless learning tool for cancer education. Results showed that this application significantly increased cancer prevention knowledge of the users when compared to a control population (p < 0.001). This study provides evidence that a mobile seamless education tool can merge into the users’ daily routine increasing users’ knowledge by providing relevant cancer prevention information through messages delivered over an extended period of time. These innovative health education solutions will further expand...

This article seeks to contribute to the deepening of knowledge when designing game-based learning activities. During the design process, the specification stage is particularly relevant, being the functional requirements an important component of this process. Qualitative approaches to its gathering have gained relevance and aroused interest within the scientific community, being of most importance to describe studies that use these methodologies. This study describes the gathering of functional requirements, from a qualitative approach, to design an application for cataloging and evaluating educational games. A focus group of eight experts was set up; the functional requirements of the application were gathered according to the Communicative Design Paradigm, aiming to identify the indicators of the proposed application, using the Octalysis gamification framework.

This article addresses the perceptions of university students about the Portuguese National Health Service (NHS) on Instagram (IG), which is the main profile of the country’s government on the platform. Young people are the largest audience of this social media (SM), which has been considered as a tool to promote public health. Therefore, this study aims at identifying how young adults perceive the content available in @sns_pt regarding health and well-being topics. The qualitative methodology was used, and a survey was carried out with undergraduate students from the University of Aveiro. It was applied digitally in June 2020, 90 days after the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the new coronavirus pandemic. The survey presents 15 questions, divided into three axes: consumption of SM, use of IG, and posts evaluation. A total of 39 valid questionnaires were obtained. The sample is made up of students between the ages of 19 and 45 years old, being 61.5% female and 38.4% male. The results obtained show that @sns_pt is known by 43.5% of the respondents and 12.8% follow the account. Also, 10.2% reported having accessed the profile for the first time after the pandemic started. The posts focused on images attracted the attention of students, as well as the contents regarding the users’ routines.

Cancer prevention should start as early as possible. Young adults would benefit largely from the use of a smartphone app aiming at promoting cancer prevention behaviours. The aims of the study described in this paper are to (1) examine the user participation and engagement with a cancer prevention app in real-life settings and (2) assess changes in the users' cancer prevention behaviours. A cancer prevention smartphone app called Happy was developed and released to the general population. Data from registered app users' (N = 3326) demographics and baseline cancer prevention behaviours was analysed. App engagement was measured and all behaviour data logged through the app was analysed to assess the effectiveness of the app in the promotion of cancer prevention behaviours. User demographics and baseline behaviour assessment show that the app reached its intended target population: young adults that generally do not comply with cancer prevention guidelines. Logged behavioural d...

Estimates predict that more than half of all cancers are due to inadequate lifestyle choices. Smartphones can be successfully used to support the behaviour change needed to prevent cancer. The purpose of this study was to field-test Happy, a smartphone app designed to promote cancer prevention behaviours, based on tailored-messages. Thirty-two participants downloaded and used the app for 28 consecutive days (4 weeks). At the end of this period, they all answered an online questionnaire and ten of them were interviewed. Usability, feasibility, message receptivity, and perceived impact of the app were assessed. Compliance with cancer prevention guidelines was lower than expected. Happy was considered simple, intuitive and easy to use. Messages sent by the app were considered easy to understand, providing good advice and meaningful information that catch reader's attention. Participants also considered that Happy might be an effective way to promote cancer prevention. Collected dat...

ABSTRACT A significant challenge on Assistive Technology (AT) relies on the interaction devices’ evaluation phase. Generally, the gap between users and devices is revealed during the use. This fact highlights the relevance of discussing these barriers early in the design process, mainly, in the evaluation phase. This article explores current practices of evaluation methodologies for AT interaction devices, both considering the usage of computers and TV-sets. Two research stages were performed to achieve this objective: a systematic mapping study of AT evaluation methodologies, and field research in Portugal, with experts in AT Evaluation and end-users. This last step was done through semi-structured interviews, whose results passed by a content analysis process. The findings from these researches suggest that there are vital dimensions that should be addressed when evaluating AT. Firstly, qualification issues remain most important, especially concerning to the developers’ awareness of end-user needs as, for example, difficulty in computer access. Other important points are the economic problems, involved in the acquisition of AT interaction devices, and the emotional issues related to using these devices. Finally, the article concludes with a discussion on directions for evaluation methodologies of AT interaction devices.

Between 2015 and 2020, the adherence of South American health authorities to Instagram has increased. In 2015, from a total of 12 countries, there were three active profiles and, in 2019, there were nine. However, a few studies analyze the use of Instagram as a strategic tool in the context of public health in developing or low-income countries. Therefore, this study aims to map health authorities’ Instagram profiles in South America. An exploratory study was carried out based on a literature review and a content analysis of these profiles. It conducts a qualitative and quantitative analysis on the uses of the platform to expand information related to public health. The sample is composed of 2,418 posts, published between April and May 2020 and January and February 2021. Regardless of the region’s deep socio-economic inequalities, it presents an intense use of the Internet and social media. The results pointed to Instagram as an emerging communication tool for the analyzed countries’ authorities, which used it with different approaches. In the sample, messages that focused on prevention, health promotion, and institutions predominated. The card was the dominant language for presenting the posts. The COVID-19 pandemic was the most frequent topic. In the final considerations, there are good practices suggestions directed to the evaluated profiles, based on the issues presented in the analysis.

This article describes an on-going investigation that explores the field of accessibility to blind people, trying to understand how they can “see” a street poster. This investigation aims to study how these individuals interact with urban space and understand what are the best strategies and interaction paradigms to use in this context. The main purpose is to contribute to the construction of a more accessible urban space, in order to
provide disclosure and inclusion for all. Therefore, in order to analyze and validate these best strategies, a prototype was built based on a mobile solution, where its function is undoubtedly the main point of the process. The different sections of this article present the theoretical background, the development process of the prototype as well as the methodology used and the conclusions before the observation of the data collected in the
adopted system.

Despite the increasing use of social media in Health Promotion (HP) and Public Health, studies indicate that health entities have difficulties guaranteeing citizens' participation in these platforms. This exploratory study analyzed the topics covered and the interactions with followers on the Instagram profiles of both the National Health Service (NHS) from Portugal and of the Ministry of Health (MH) from Brazil, in 2019. The sample showed that nationals HP agendas compete with political topics: of the 208 posts from the NHS, 19.2% were about the government, and of the 424 posts from the MH, 32.20% were institutional. Fifty-three health topics were mapped in the NHS profile and 63 in the MH profile. In Portugal, there wasn't interaction with followers and in Brazil, the MH interaction was reduced. It is necessary to refine communication strategies to increase the reach of these profiles and encourage social participation.
