According to the Bible, Eve was the first to heed Satan’s advice to eat of the forbidden fruit. The notion of woman as the Devil’s accomplice is prominent throughout the history of Christianity. During the nineteenth century, rebellious females performed counter-readings of this misogynist tradition. Hereby, Lucifer was reconceptualised as a feminist liberator of womankind, and Eve became a heroine. In these reimaginings, Satan is an ally in the struggle against a patriarchy supported by God the Father and his male priests.

This study delineates how such Satanic feminism is expressed in a number of nineteenth-century esoteric works, literary texts, autobiographies, pamphlets and journals, newspaper articles, paintings, sculptures and even artefacts of consumer culture such as jewellery.

In the material, four motifs in particular are prominent: 1) interpretations of Eve’s role in the fall of man as something positive, 2) the witch as a proto-feminist figure, 3) the demon lover as an emancipator, 4) a feminised Satan contrasted with an oppressive male God. A fifth and less central motif is conceptions of Lilith, according to Jewish lore the unruly first wife of Adam, as the first feminist.

The analysis focuses on interfaces between esotericism and the political realm, as well as the interdependence of literature and the occult. New light is thus shed on neglected aspects of the intellectual history of feminism, Satanism and revisionary mythmaking. The study is informed by theories concerning counter-readings, counter-discourses and counter-myths, and in particular highlights the complex interplay of such phenomena and the hegemonic discourses that demonised feminism. A key theme in this context is the limits and paradoxes of inversion as a subversive strategy.

This thesis’ objective is to present characters of Satan, Lucifer and Mephistopheles in the English literature from the Middle Ages and make a definite statement whether they are one and the same being or not. The first chapter covers the biblical, theological, religious, folklore and mythological origins of the devil and explains the meaning of this term. It also defines the term evil. The expert in the field that I frequently make references to in this contribution is Jeffrey Burton Russell. Chapter two analyses the characters of Satan, Lucifer and Mephistopheles in John Milton’s Paradise Lost and Charles Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus. Moreover, other resources that approach those three figures are mentioned, alongside the results of the short questionnaire that I have prepared in order to get a better understanding of where the devil stands in contemporary society.

This essay explores the archetypal analogy between Shakespeare's character of Macbeth and the Devil. As two figures who emerged from a position of favor to usurp their monarch's thrown (though one is more successful than the other), the comparison begs to be addressed. One can find most of the similarities between Macbeth and Satan in Judeo-Christian scripture, as well as in sections of the New Testament. My argument in this paper departs from the suggestion that the winged creature that Eilish embodies is Lucifer, [originally] a biblical figure who is said in Isaiah 14:12-17 to have ‘’exalted his throne above the stars of God’’, intending to ‘’be like the most High’’.

This paper approaches these questions through the lens of the cultural and religious context(s) in which all the good girls go to hell was created. My aim is to explain why Eilish’ performance as Lucifer neatly fits the (counter-)cultural environment in which both the song and the music video originate. I do so by means of establishing an explicit connection between the literary construction of Lucifer as a romantic hero and the countercultural position of the [revolting] artist as genius. My argument is that Billie Eilish’ music video displays a performance of what I call expressive individualism (following Robert Bellah [1985] and Charles Taylor [2007]), an ideology that she subsequently embodies through the figure of Lucifer.

This article is an attempt to defend Calvin's rejection of Isa 14:12-15 being a reference to Satan through elucidating the connection between the Athtar pericope of the Baal Myth and Isaiah 14:4b-21. The Old Testament repeatedly indicated that the Baal cult was a serious problem in Israel, which gives good cause to consider whether Isaiah interacted with their texts. At first sight the title must seem like a misunderstanding at best, at worst an intentional perversity. After all, the 'Prodigal Son' is not a person, but a character in a parable, a literary form where from the beginning both speaker and hearers are fully aware that it is not a story of fact, or even a mythos partly based on fact but exaggerated over countless retellings. A parable intends truth of a kind, but not factual truth, rather an archetypal truth (if that isn't too much of an anachronistic way of conceiving how parables were understood in Jesus' time, as well as how they're understood in contemporary readings).

However, the parable of the Prodigal Son has always seemed to me  to be uniquely parabolic in the sense that it is commonly the best remembered of the parables, yet the most unyielding to common understanding. The problem, not simply of why the father takes back the errant son, but even in his explanation to the brother appears to merely be mollifying the less favoured of the two sons, has barely been touched on in the theological literature I have been able to find. While this is problematic in itself, the usual touch-up on the parable fails to consider the rather obvious issue that the 'father' in the parable is highly unlikely to represent Jesus (who didn't call himself the Son of God, never mind refer to himself as the father).

This extended essay for the IB program evaluates the extent in which we can perceive Lord Voldemort as the misunderstood tragic hero of the Harry Potter series, rather than as the villainous archetype he is famously portrayed to be. To accomplish this, I at first establish the cultural particularity of Western morals the book is based in through analysis of its historical and axiological origins to introduce the lack of absoluteness and complexity when depicting Lord Voldemort as ‘bad guy’, as well as to introduce the underlining presence of Ancient Greek thought in the series.
This further helps establish the second argument that presents classic Aristotelian tragedy, as seen in Greek plays, in order to demonstrate the numerous resemblances Voldemort possesses with many of these iconic fallen heroes. Such supports the justification that he is further misunderstood when the reader does not realize such. This is notably done by recurrently running parallels between him and Lucifer from Paradise Lost.
Finally, with the help of scholarly articles analyzing and criticizing stereotypes found in popular literary media, I further evaluate the dynamic between the hero, Harry Potter, and the villain, Lord Voldemort, in order to demonstrate the manner relationships such as these reinforce the reader’s perception of villainy in Voldemort, while overlooking key factors that illustrate the depth of the character and tragedy of his actions.
Through the use of these three arguments, and the wide range of different moral and cultural perspectives analyzed while investigating the subject, I am able to come to the conclusion that Lord Voldemort is undoubtedly a fallen hero who is mistaken for a villain, adding to the tragedy of his striking character.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to identify paintings and sculptures based on "Fallen Angels" iconographyin the context of Enoch's Book, Old Testament and the New Testamen tas well as to determine the scripture which is mostly referred as the holy text, among the art work samples. For this purpose, three books mentioned above also the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Hebrew myths have been analyzed and the finding sare recorded in the introduction part. In the second part, the art works reflecting the iconography are illustrated and in the analysis of these works, it is noted that they directly associate with the references on " Fallen Angels ". According to the results obtained in this study, the Book of Enoch, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Hebrew myths and some part of the Old Testament texts include information about Fallen Angels' names, their relation with " daughters of men " , their offspring " giants " , perversion caused by them on earth, their curse by God, duties of Archangels on their punishment and " Judgement Day " while the Old Testament, mostly the New Testament texts, focus on the war in Heaven between Archangel Michael and Lucifer/Satan, " the leader of the " Fallen Angels/root of evil on earth " and most of the art works are found to refer to this version of the iconography.

The article examines the War in Heaven scene depicting the Fall of the Rebel Angels in the 1200s Anglo-Norman group of illustrated Apocalypse manuscripts, key in the development of Apocalypse illustration as far as quality, quantity, and art historical heritage are concerned. The iconography of the crucial War in Heaven scene shows a variety in the manuscript group; the compositions, divided into three well-defined groups at Satan’s pivotal moment of defeat, are depicted in three principal compositional types: one manuscript group focuses on the narrative of the battle, the second fuses the battle and its victorious result, and the third type focuses on the victory itself. The article establishes further subgroups on the basis of compositional similarities, and results occasionally strengthen or weaken existing theories about the traditional grouping of the manuscripts. The highlighted iconographical similarities provide new material for the reconsideration of the manuscripts’ artistic relations and dating.

The demons, like the higher angels that they were, are clothed with iconographic details that remind us of the peacock, such as the crest on its head, its characteristic wings and, above all, the blue skin colouring which reminds us of the characteristic colour of this bird. The use of peacock symbology comes about in an artistic period – the Renaissance – in which there is an abundance of iconography referring to the fall of the rebellious angels which harps on the motive of disobedience. In the same way that the peacock is the most beautiful bird in Paradise, Lucifer is the most beautiful of the angels and both, because of their attractiveness, represent the pride and vanity which caused the fall of the devil. That colour clothing also identifies the fallen angel with a cherubim, portrayed with the colour blue in art in contrast to the red colouring appropriate to the seraphim, who faced with the revolt of their fellows remained faithful to God and custodians of Paradise.

The physical attractiveness of the devil, which goes back to the new vision of the devil in the 16th c. emphasising his beauty, and the increasingly more frequent link between pride and luxury and conceit. By influencing the beauty of Lucifer, and artistic and literally trend will begin, that will derive in the romantic attractiveness of the devil.
 
The iconography of Lucifer portrayed as a peacock lives on in the 20th c. in a religious community in the mountains of Irak. We are talking of the Yazadi of Lalish who adore an angel who disobeyed his Creator for which he was condemned to Hell. Once there his tears of repentance extinguished the flames of Hell leading to his being forgiven and raised to the position of God’s representative on Earth. He is called Melek Taus and is portrayed as a very beautiful peacock; its main colour is being blue, sacred in that creed and hence exclusive to that divinity.

The story of Lucifer’s pride and fall fills an empty space within Satan’s “biography.” It originates in an angelological re-reading of Isa 14 and Ezek 28 which doesn’t stem from early Judaism but from the Christianity of the late 2nd century. Its background is the dispute about the virulent question regarding the origin of evil, stimulated by the Marcionite school. The myth of Lucifer offers a counter-tale to the myth of Christ, thus reflecting developing Christology and conceptions of the Antichrist as well. The pattern of the devil’s self-aggrandizement/pride and downfall in contrast to Christ’s self-abasement/humility and exaltation is also ethically relevant.

Th e topic of “Lucifer ” in the 14th chapter of Isaiah is understood by some correctly but when strong religious leaders preach or teach on Satan it is this chapter, which has been quoted for centuries by Christian theologians and laypersons, that is brought into the sermon or teaching.

It is known as a hallmark verse to teach us about Satan. It is often taught in connection with the words of the Messiah in the Gospel of Luke in which He states that He saw “Satan” fall from heaven. There is a very important question that needs to be asked regarding this statement in Isaiah, that of the Messiah and every statement in the Apostolic Testimony about the devil, demons , or Satan. The question is; “What did the speaker believe about the topic when he spoke those words?”
