This book is devoted to the poorly studied early poetry of Vladislav Khodasevich (1886–1939), one of the most remarkable poets of the Russian “Silver Age”.
The research focuses primarily on early collections of Khodasevich, Molodost’ (Youth, 1908), Schastlivyj domik (The Happy Little House, 1914), and selection of poems from another book, Vetv’ (Branch, 1917). The mentioned texts are regarded as consequent stages of the poet’s development.
We took into consideration several aspects of the development of Khodasevich’s poetry. The first question of our interest was which texts of the poets of older generation (V. Bryusov, A. Blok, A. Bely) were adopted and revised by Khodasevich in his early verses.
Second, the present thesis analyses Russian poetry of the 19th century in Khodasevich’s treatment. In Molodost’ the references to Pushkin’s epoch were rather conventional and emanated from the influence of Bryusov, who had the reputation of the follower of Pushkin’s tradition. However, over time the presence of Pushkin’s epoch in Khodasevich’s writings was becoming more significant. In the verses written between 1916 and 1917 a new kind of reference to the 19th century literature becomes visible. The poet’s development consisted in gradual disengaging from the influence of Bryusov and other symbolist poets, and in overcoming them through employing the traditions of the 19th century.
The third important theme of the study is Khodasevich’s own evolution. In our opinion, the poet, being under the influence of the “younger” symbolists, had adopted their model of evolution as well. For example, the first stage of Khodasevich’s development, i.e. his “thesis”, corresponds to the “antithesis” of Block and Bely. The following stage of his evolution is in contrast to the first one, similarly to how it happened among the “younger” symbolists.
Having undertaken the analysis of the poems written between 1915 and 1917, when aesthetic themes were replaced with social and ethical problems, helped us reach the conclusion that the third stage of Khodasevich’s evolution (the “synthesis”) corresponds to the “synthesis” of Blok.

The article is focused on Alexander Kushner’s poem “They don’t Choose the Times...”. We analyze the whole text and its first lines “They don’t choose the times, / They live and die in them”, which have been fixed in the Russian proverbial and quotation fund. Based on the linguistic analysis of the text, in particular, on the idiomatic approach, I attempt to deconstruct the poem. As it is shown, the key maxim oscillates between universal and situational meaning. The text of the poem realizes a rhetorical system of arguments to accept modernity and turns the paradoxical maxim into a rhetorical argument. The final stanza deserves special attention. The phrase from the criminal procedural discourse “to take fi ngerprints” plays the main role in it. The use of this figure of speech betrays the subject’s specific understanding of history and modernity. The system of text arguments appears to be disordered and contradictory. In my opinion, it can be explained by the traumatic nature of the Stalin’s era. The subject convinces to accept modernity not an imaginary interlocutor (a reader) as of himself, because he feels the danger of political persecution for having different.

The purpose of the article is to offer an explanation of the intertextual density characteristic of the poetry of Russian modernism. Intertextuality is viewed from two perspectives — the reader’s and the author’s. In terms of perceiving the text, intertextuality is not needed to “encode” the meaning of a work (according to Taranovsky’s and Ronen’s ideas, derived from the large intertextual theory) — it implements a memorial function (maintains the memory of significant canonical texts) and brings the reader special cognitive pleasure. The main focus of the article is on the author’s perspective. The citation thinking of modernist poets may be comprehended through the categories of folklore studies, first of all, within the framework of the model of epic storytelling. The use of this theory allows one to give a systematic explanation of the intertextuality of many poets (first of all, V. Khodasevich, but also other poets with neoclassical features or with an intense dialogue with literary tradition) and to see in the consciousness of the modernist writer features peculiar to the consciousness of the bearer
of the folklore tradition. Particular attention is paid to the topics, the lexical cliches and to work with tradition in modernist lyrics, as well as to the mechanisms of text generation.

This paper is devoted to a rather well-known poet in Leningrad’s literary circles, the translator and dandy V. O. Stenich (1897-1938), and it’s divided into three parts: 1) Stenich’s profile; 2) An analysis of his lifestyle; 3) The first edition of some Stenich’s poetry texts.
Above all, the second part is very important, since it concerns an in-depth investigation of Stenich’s everyday manners as a dandy: the poet’s personality is compared, on the one hand, with his predecessors (the Futurists) and their particular way of behaving; on the other hand, with Oberiuty’s lifestyle in both social and literary contexts.
Oberiuty can be considered as the one who closed a period of “creation of life” according to avant-garde principles: we are dealing with a sort of incessant trend, which began in the 10s and ended in the 30s. From a typological point of view, Stenich’s personality represents a “bridge” between two opposite poles, i. e. the Futurists and the Oberiuty; this idea can be demonstrated through a large amount of examples. I especially focused on a typology of lifestyle in the Russian literary context.

Notes of a Cavalryman (Zapiski kavalerista, 1915–1916) by Nikolai Gumilev are dedicated to the poet’s participation in World War I and reveal a deep influence of Tolstoy’s novel War and Peace. A brief analysis of the work leads to the conclusion that Gumilev on a superficial level often argued with Tolstoy’s concept of war. Nevertheless, on a deeper level he took cues
from Nikolai Rostov not only by getting in the same situations as Tolstoy’s hero, but also by resembling Rostov’s psychological type. This consequently allows us to claim that during World War I, Nikolai Rostov was a model according to which Gumilev fashioned his own life.

This article concerns the likely source of an erotic image from Valery Bryusov’s hoax poem collection Stikhi Nelli (Nelli’s Poems). It shows that the image of an octopus copulating with a woman in the culmination of the poem “Nochnoi ropot” (“Night Murmur”), is related to Japanese erotic engravings (shunga), and originates from Hokusai’s woodblock print “The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife” (1814). Thus, the source established supports the idea that shunga inspired European modernist poetry in its search for a new erotic language.

Filipovich is known as the most outstanding figure in Ukrainian culture of the 1920s –1930s.: a poet who was a member of the “neoclassics” association, a translator into Ukrainian of poems by Pushkin and Bryusov, a researcher of Ukrainian literature. The Russian-language heritage of Filippovich is less well-known: under his real name he studied the works of Baratynsky, and under the pseudonym P. Zorev published his poetry in modernist magazines. The dictionary article about Philip(p)ovich sheds light on little-known pages of his creative biography of the Russian period.
The paper focuses on analysis of discourse of G. Uspensky’s mental disorder. Drawing from R. Jakobson’s hypothesis, according to which the
writer’s insanity is connected to his tendency to metonymy, I analyze G. Uspensky’s hallucinations and delusional ideas. Personality dissociation, observed during the period of disease, is explained by a metonymic cognitive pattern, which “split” the writer’s conception of sexuality in a special manner. Having established that writer’s ambiguous attitude
towards sexuality is a semantic core of his delusional discourse, I examine a short story Straightened (1885) and prove that its semantic structure is motivated by the attempts to comprehend sexuality in
an uncontradictory way.

The Status of Proverbs in First Third of 19th Century and the natue of E.A. Boratynskij's ideas: Analyzing the poem 'Staratel'no mi nabludaem svet...'
The article analyzes the status of proverbs and sayings in the Russian culture and the literary language of the first third of the 19th century. The first part discusses the ambivalent attitude toward paremias among ‘Šiškovists’ and ‘Karamzinists’. The use of proverbs and sayings in literary texts of the 1800–1830s (primarily in poetry) allows us to conclude that paremias had to undergo strict taste selection. The second part of the article analyzes the surge of (proto)scientific interest in paremias in the 1820s. The analysis of the articles on proverbs and sayings demonstrates that paremias were perceived as a special philosophy of the people, competing with elite philosophical systems. The last part of the work is dedicated to the poem Staratel’no my nabljudaem svet … (‘Diligently we observe the light ...’) by E. A. Boratynskij. Its linguistic and semantic analysis allows us to illustrate the ambivalent status of paremias in the Russian culture of the first third of the 19th century.

Vladislav Khodasevich's literary activity in emigration (1922–39) may be described as a search for a new identity. Khodasevich's departure abroad induced a powerful self‐image crisis and resulted in the trauma of emigration, which silenced him as a poet. In his attempt to move past this creative crisis, he turned to the biographies of Gavrila Derzhavin and Aleksandr Pushkin. In writing the biographical narratives of the two great poets, Khodasevich projected episodes of his own biography onto the two classic writers and identified with them in his attempt to conquer his own creative crisis. Nevertheless, the trauma of emigration turned out to be the stronger element, and neither of his attempts to identify with the two classical authors was successful: having completed Derzhavin's biography, Khodasevich began to identify instead with the tragi‐comic poet Lebiadkin, a character from Dostoevsky's The Possessed, about whose verses Khodasevich wrote an article. Then, having finished several chapters of Pushkin's biography, he conceived of a literary mystification, which he completed several years later–“The Life of Vasilii Travnikov.” This mystification reflected Khodasevich's traumatic identity: Khodasevich attributed his own world view and several episodes from his own life to its main character. This article examines in detail the mechanisms Khodasevich used to search for a new identity in the emigration, a search that in Khodasevich's case was not crowned with success.

This paper is devoted to the influence that the experience of emigration had on the poetics of Khodasevich's book European Night (Evropeiskaia noch'). Till the spring of 1925 Khodasevich thought that he had the possibility to return to the Soviet Union. This state of mind determined the pragmatic meaning of the poems that Khodasevich wrote in the period between 1922 and 1925, i.e. the time in which he emigrated to Europe and yet did not feel himself a " real " emigrant. These poems are characterized by a satirical orientation as well as by a radical rejection of emigration. On the other hand, the texts that were written between 1925 and 1927 (when Khodasevich formed his self-identification as an emigrant) radically changed the pragmatics of European Night: In this way it becomes a book expressing a deep existential despair. This inner crisis includes the Russian space as well as the space of emigration. In our study we also analyse the way in which Khodasevich mitigates the satirical orientation of the first version of the book.

In this article we will examine the influence of Alexander Herzen, perhaps the most famous Russian emigré of the 19th century, on the worldview of Vladislav Khodasevich and on the poetics of the latter’s poetry written in emigration. In this study it will be shown that Herzen’s relationship to the Europe of his day and its bourgeois values and political programs was a model for Khodasevich and influenced some of the poems in European Night. The title of this collection of poems and many features of its poetics (the position of the observer, the description of the “deformity” of European culture, political themes that occasionally appear) illustrate Khodasevich’s indebtedness to the works of Herzen. In this article we will also investigate Khodasevich’s social and political views and discuss the question of the pragmatics of his poems written in emigration.

This article is dedicated to the influence of Heinrich Heine on the poetry of Vladislav Khodasevich. Although for Khodasevich the Russian literary tradition was more important than the European tradition, in his lyric poetry tangible influence of Heine’s poetry can be found. However, links to Heine in Khodasevich’s early poetry can be characterized as superficial and are manifested in either in ironic depictions of love (“Verses about a Cousin”) or for the description of a stylized German city (“In a German Small Town”). In the poetry collection The Heavy Lyre (1922) the assimilation of Heine is deeper. Khodasevich on the one hand develops scathing irony after the fashion of Heine (“Gisele”), and, on the other hand he adopts Heine’s romantic treatment of love themes (“The Wanderer Passed, Leaning on his Staff”). There is a proximity within the framework of the book of a sense of a unity of two thematically similar love poems, which treat the theme of love in opposing ways — ironically and romantically. These are modalities that are probably the result of the influence of Heine. This does not annul the reworking of a range of Heine’s themes in such poems as “To Anyuta,” “Evidence,” and “The Star Shines, the Ether Trembles”. The outlines of a new stage of Khodasevich’s assimilation of Heine’ occur in the former’s emigration. Alongside “Ballad” this trend can be noted in in the poem “The Old Man and the Hunchback Girl,” in which the poetics take on characteristics of German poetry in general, and Heine’s poetry more particularly. Together with this, Heine’s influence here makes complicates the thematic influence of German expressionists. This new satirical and social adoption of the German poet failed to find its development in Khodasevich’s work and in his poetry written in emigration we do not find any more references to Heine. In regards to German expressionists, evidently Khodasevich, to some extent, experienced the influence of their poetry. However one cannot interpret this as fundamental to his work.

This article suggests a literary analysis of " Renata's End " , a memoir essay written by V. Khodasevich (1928), one of the key examples for understanding the particular nature of Russian symbolism. It is focused on the interpretation that Khoda-sevich gave to Petrovskaya's life abroad. The author of the memoir looks at the life of his character through the prism of a symbolist life-creation (zhiznetvorcheskaya) model based on the concept of doppelgangers, or doubles. Simultaneously, the author's commentary of Petrovskaya'a life abroad is related directly to his own arduous experience as an émigré. In other words, in the article " Renata's End " is examined as a text where Khodasevich reflects upon his trauma of emigration. In this perspective it is clear that Petrovskaya's biography – in keeping with Symbolism – was perceived by Khodasevich as an alternative version of his own life. Particular attention is paid to the composition of the memoir essay and to its textological history.

[The article discusses the poetic formula of Vladislav Khodasevich’s Putiom zerna (Grain’s Way). The aim of the article is to show that the formula putiom zerna (grain’s way) is also tied to the Russian poetic revolutionary myth, in which the agrarian imagery was consistently endowed with the social and revolutionary connotations. Khodasevich’s poem and his collection bearing the same title are a convenient starting point for elucidating this poetical myth. The article considers its development in the lyrics by Alexander Pushkin and Nikolay Nekrasov, as well as its transformation
in the poetry of the Symbolists. Special emphasis is laid on the lyrics of the Peasant Poets and their responses to the Revolution of 1917. In the light of the article’s topic, the poems of the Peasant Poets feature the myth with very high intensity. This article offers a detailed analysis of Osip Mandelstam’s poem Na otkosy, Volga, chlyn’, Volga, chlyn’. The main purpose of the paper is to describe how the poet uses folklore and pseudo-folklore traditions to create his own text. The author concludes that certain words and metaphors dispersed in Mandelstam’s poem refer to folklore topoi. As a result, the poem seems to be intuitively understandable despite the fact that the grammatical structure complicates the perception of its semantics. Thus, Mandelstam’s poem does not appear to be “obscured” (tëmnoe), contrary to what has been commonly pointed out in previous studies. Moreover, even immanent analysis allows the reader to understand the main semantic features of the text. The article calls into question the intertextual approach, which is the most common, to the late work of Mandelstam.

This paper is devoted to the influence of Chodasevič’s poetic technique on Mandel′štam’s poetry. We make an attempt to analyze Mandel′štam’s late Novye stichi (“Ne govori nikomu…”, “Kuda kak strašno nam s toboj…” and “My s toboj na kuchne posidim…”), which are connected to each other through the theme of fear. From the point of view of the poetic technique, these texts are also connected to each other through the literary device of the unexpected twist of meaning, which was associated with Chodasevič’s lyrics in Mandel′štam’s consciousness.

Two unpublished autobiographies of poet, translator and memoirist Benedikt Livshits (1886/1887—1938), written in 1923 and 1924 (and held in the Manuscript Division of the Institute of Russian Literature), feature, together with an extensive commentary establishing the chronological backdrop to and the details of his life in the 1890s—1910s. Major events in his life are listed as far as possible thanks to a variety of archive sources (the statements of his second wife, E. Livshits, his student file from the Kiev Municipal Archive). These include the poet’s family history and his time as a student at the Richelieu Gymnasium and the universities of Odessa and Kiev, as well as the precise date of his baptism and a number of episodes from his service in the First World War. Information gleaned from the reminiscences of E. Livshits regarding the vicissitudes of her husband’s life is a particular focus, giving greater insight into a life story little told by memoirists. Also included is an unpublished poem by
Livshits’s first wife, V. Arngold-Zhukova, which she dedicated to him.

The article discusses the narrative strategies in Benedikt Livshits’s One and a Half- Eyed Archer, in which one can distinguish, conditionally speaking, a “Gogolian” and a “Tolstoyan” principle. This determines the portraiture, in a more or less positive or negative light, of various major Futurists, such as David Burliuk, Aleksei Kruchenykh, Velimir Khlebnikov, Vladimir Maiakovskii, and other figures, such as Elena Guro, Igor’ Severianin and Nikolai Kul’bin.

This paper is devoted to the radical cubo-futuristic prose poem “Lyudi v peyza- zhe” (“People in the landscape”), written by Benedikt Livshits in 1911. Some time ago M.L. Gasparov proposed an immanent analysis of this text: in my work I make an attempt to integrate it through analysis of the literary tradition which defined the themes as well as the poetics of “People in the landscape”. I especially consider the “paraphrase” given by Gasparov as a sort of “draft” of the text itself and I then try to reconstruct its connections with the broader tradition of prose poems. In the final part of my paper I show how Andrey Bely’s language experiments were an important influence on the poetics of Livshits’s text.

In this work we publish some ego-documents by E. K. Livshits. Such materials are most interesting for the history of Russian literature, as we are presenting the documents that we found in different archives alongside with other notes that were unknown before. Their contents are con- nected with B. Livshits’s life and poetry, as well as with O. Mandelstam’s biography.
