DESCRIPTION The voluminous nature of social scientific, spatial-temporal statistical databases calls for high interactive performance and creative integrated information based on InfoVis and geo-visualization tools. A solution to this challenge can be found in Visual Analytics, a science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces and innovative visualization. This slide presentation give an introduction lecture to “Geovisual Analytics”, based on the principles behind VA but also include many famous InfoVis methods. The objective is to define new suitable approaches and tools for exploring time variant and multivariate attributes simultaneous including a spatial dimension. Parallel coordinates are introduced that integrate with time series and trend graph and serves as a visual control panel for links demonstrators. Multivariate attribute dynamic queries can express simultaneously queries involving time varying spatial data. VA encourages the need to build a...

Official statistics such as demographics, environment, health, social-economy and education from national and sub-national sources are a rich and important source of information for many important aspects of life and should be considered to be more used and acknowledged in education. Educators and their students would be able to get informed and at the same time participate in increasing the knowledge on how life is lived and can be improved. A lot of this statistics information can be reached on the Internet. This is producing what is often called information overload and causing people to be increasingly faced with the problems of filtering and interpreting enormous quantities of information. We know that official statistics are used as a more or less important background for decisions especially in public planning and policy making. However, in education, official statistics are much less recognized and used than they ought to be and among the informed public they are even less u...

ABSTRACT Official statistics such as demographics, environment, health, social economy and education from regional territories are a rich and important source of information for many important aspects of life. Web-enabled geovisual analytics is a technique that can help illustrating comprehensive statistical data which for the eye are hard perceive or interpret. In this paper, we introduce “storytelling” means for the author to 1) select spatio-temporal and multivariate statistical data, 2) explore and discern trends and patterns, 3) orchestrate and describe metadata, 4) collaborate with colleagues to confirm and 5) finally publish essential gained insight and knowledge embedded as dynamic visualization “Vislet” in a blog or web page. The author can guide the reader in the directions of both context and discovery while at the same time follow the analyst’s way of logical reasoning. We are moving away from a clear distinction between authors and readers affecting the process through which knowledge is created and the traditional models which support editorial work. Value no longer relies solely on the content but also on the ability to access this information. See also http://ncva.itn.liu.se for more information related to this project.

A thin client, by definition, have minimal software requirements necessary to function as a user interface front-end for a Web enabled application and raises the issue of client vs. server data visualization rendering. Real-time visual data manipulation doesn't translate well into a "thin" client. While the VRML file format allows distribution of visualization scenes to the Web, the user has no access to the actual underlying data source. The "mapping" of numerical data into geometry format (VRML) takes place at the server side.Local data manipulation, information drill-down technique, context sensitive menus, object picking and other interactive user interface functions that traditionally have been available on the client are now controlled by the visualization server. In the "thin" client model, nearly all functionality is delivered from the server side of the visualization engine while the client perform very simple display and querying functions.Web components and Plug-ins are now being used to overcome some of these limitations. Java allows the creation of "applets" and "JavaBeans" and we have Windows/COM components. These components together with data reduction methods can significantly increase the data interaction between the client application and user, and allow tasks to be executed on the client. Highly interactive user interface tasks are delivered that provide point-and-click navigation through multidimensional data structures. Visual data interfaces such as information drilling, moving a cutting plane through a volume data set etc can be supported. The implication of using a static VRML environment with reduced geometry is compared to sending compressed data to the client and perform interactive client data visualization on a desktop.

Cellular radio networks are continually growing in both node count and complexity. It therefore becomes more difficult to manage the networks and necessary to use time and cost effective automatic algorithms to organize the network's neighbor cell relations. There have been a number of attempts to develop such automatic algorithms. Network operators, however, may not trust them because they need to have an understanding of their behavior and of their reliability and performance, which is not easily perceived. This paper presents a novel web-enabled geovisual analytics approach to exploration and understanding of self-organizing network data related to cells and neighbor cell relations. A demonstrator and case study are presented in this paper, developed in close collaboration with the Swedish telecom company Ericsson and based on large multivariate, time-varying and geospatial data provided by the company. It allows the operators to follow, interact with and analyze the evolution of a self-organizing network and enhance their understanding of how an automatic algorithm configures locally-unique physical cell identities and organizes neighbor cell relations of the network. The geovisual analytics tool is tested with a self-organizing network that is operated by the Automatic Neighbor Relations (ANR) algorithm. The demonstrator has been tested with positive results by a group of domain experts from Ericsson and will be tested in production.

Sound information at sub-national level and benchmarking of regions across national borders has increased in importance in the policy agenda of many countries due to higher integration driven by institutional processes and economic globalisation. Geovisual analytics techniques help illustrating complex data such as regional, spatiotemporal and multidimensional statistics. Interactive time-linked visual representations enable the users to simultaneously analyse relations among different variables. “OECD eXplorer”, developed by NCVA in collaboration with OECD, is today a worldwide recognized web-enabled tool for visualizing and better understanding the socio-economic structure of OECD regions and their performance over time. Geovisual Analytics in the OECD explorer has so far focused more on tools to analyse regional economic performance than on methods that efficiently publish gained knowledge. Publication is indeed part of the analytical process and it could become a cat...

The paper considers how the integration between visualization and storytelling can make statistical findings more comprehensible and accessible to the general public. Traditional practices for geovisual analytics methods applied to official statistics require tools for greater user participation and an improved user experience. The approach set out in this paper allows the analyst (the author) to communicate with interested readers through visual discoveries captured in snapshots with descriptive text. The paper introduces HTML5 based geovisual analytics tools that facilitate storytelling aimed at producing statistical news content in support of an automatic authoring process. The author simply presses a button to publish the knowledge gained from a visual interactive discovery process within an interactive web context that could more engagingly draw the user into reflections and sometimes change a perspective altogether. Keywords: Geovisual analytics, storytelling, HTML5

This paper reflects a challenging applied research task to stimulate, at global level, exchange of statistical measures and knowledge through innovative Geovisual Analytics techniques. Establish progress initiatives at international and regional (sub-national) levels for measuring and collaborating, through statistical indicators, economic, social and en- vironmental developments and to engage both statisticians and public. Official statistics are used as a more or less important background for decisions especially in public planning and policy making. However, in education, official statistics are much less recognized and used than they could be and among the informed public they are even less used. Web-enabled Geovisual Analytics is a technique that can help illustrating spatio-temporal statistical data which for the eye are hard to uncover or even are not possible to perceive or interpret. We introduce novel “storytelling” means for the educator to 1) select any spatio-temporal and multidimensional national or sub-national statistical data, 2) explore and discern trends and patterns, 3) then orchestrate and describe metadata, 4) collaborate with colleagues to confirm and 5) finally publish essential gained insight and knowledge embedded as dynamic visualization “Vislet” in blogs or wikis with associate metadata. The educator can guide the reader in the directions of both context and discovery while at the same time follow the analyst’s way of logical reasoning. This emerging technology could in many ways change the terms and structures for learning, especially for the young generation. A better understanding of how educators and students can exploit visualization and its associated science of perception and learning is the focus of this paper in relation to the use of official statistical data. The results show that the geovisual analytics can be effective for students and it is easy for them to understand and control the interactive tools. It is sufficient for supporting the apprehension of connections between different kinds of statistical data. The user satisfaction and learning possibilities are extensive.
