This study sets out to analyse the memorial function performed by objects in the novel tim Sulaymà (Sulaymà's Ring, 2022) by Rima Bali , a Syrian writer who has been a refugee in Madrid since 2016. After situating the work in the context of the «aesthetics of devastation» that have developed in post-2011 Syrian cultural production, I will focus on the narrative strategies through which the author dedicates herself to overcoming this fictional tendency. I will review in particular her use of magic realism to arbitrate between the urge to create a documentary archive of the Syrian conflict and the need to rebuild hope in the future, through the creative power of the imagination. The city of Aleppo emerges then as the real protagonist of this novel. The city becomes both a symbol of destruction and of reconstruction, rising from the ashes thanks to the magical powers of Sulaymà's ring. This jewel rebuilds the links between past and future, activating memories and visions of a reality which -like the myth of al-Andalus- will serve to produce a discourse on the Syrian revolution different from that conveyed by the official narratives.

As the Syrian uprising turned into civil war, the hope of the first months of
2011 gradually dissolved and paved the way for the resurgence of fear, a
feeling that the Assads’ clan policy of terror had been instilling in most of
Syrian society for fifty years. Fear and paranoia are also at the core of
Dīmah Wannūs’s novel, al-Ḫāʾifūn (The Frightened Ones, 2017). The book
explores the psychological fallout of living under dictatorship in post-revolutionary Syria through the intimate romance between two patients of a Damascene therapist, a plot that intertwines with the stories of their family
members, of other minor characters and some autobiographical memories of Wannūs herself. Grounding on in depth textual criticism and socio-historical analysis, this article makes an intervention both in the field of Syria’s political anthropology, by highlighting how the revolution’s crackdown has stirred supressed traumatic memories among the population, generating new forms of anxiety and distress, and in the field of Trauma Studies, questioning their Eurocentric approach, and enriching them with some insights coming from a non-European experience. In so doing, contemporary Syria, as narrated in Wannūs’ novel, appears as a laboratory to understand the psychological mechanism that in authoritarian regimes allow distress to finally emerge as the ultimate national link between both victims and perpetrators.

Mobility is a central part of our contemporary lives. Nevertheless, people’s
movements are characterised by profound asymmetries which are accentuated not
only by the functioning of the global border system, but also by the mainstream
narration of displacement made by the media. Because of this overrepresentation,
immigration has become an imaginary fact, different from what it really is, and
has come to be rooted in the collective unconscious of the West as a contemporary
myth. My study proposes to analyse the novel Taytānīkāt afrīqiyya (2008)
by the Eritrean Abū Bakr Ḥāmid Kahhāl to show how the author manages to
reappropriate this «myth» through the implementation of a system of counternarrative
that frees it from the weight of political ideologies, restoring its endemic
explanatory and moral functions. We shall see how, through a successful alternation
of strategies of familiarisation and defamiliarisation, the writer manages to capture
the interest of his readers, transmitting to them the dramatic narrative of the Epic
lived by the «great migrant people». Allegorical language allows him to move
from the particular to the universal, using archetypal characters that aim to shake
the subconscious of the reader, both Arab and Western. The element of pathos
will be crucial to provoke the identification of the audience with the suffering of
the migrants, making the narrative a medium to plead their cause.

The present contribution to Trafo’s MECAM blog aims to show how Arab migration writings and future writings have increasingly ended up overlapping, in the wake of the “speculative turn” taken by contemporary fiction. Through a review of a few novels published after the 2015 so-called “refugee crisis” and drawing on the studies of Johanna Sellman and Letizia Lombezzi, as well as on the notion of “refugeedom”, we will see how this literary genre juxtaposes the documentary function of prose with narrative strategies of estrangement and defamiliarization that aim to generate in the reader a desire to act on the present, to redeem the past and change the future of hospitality worldwide.

The present study explores the developments that have recently occurred in modern and contemporary Arabic fiction of migration and exile, in terms of artistic creation and critical debate, emphasizing the link between sociopolitical reality and literary production. After providing a brief insight into literature of forced displacement (adab al-tahjir) and asylum (adab al-luju’), the chapter focuses on Haitham Hussein’s trajectory as a case-study, by analyzing his last novel, Qad la yabqa ahad, aghatha kristy… ta‘aly aqul laki kayfa a‘iysh (No One May Remain. Agatha Christie, Come, I’ll Tell You How I Live, 2021 [2018]). This work of pseudo-fiction retraces his experience of flight to Europe from Syria across the Middle East, raising crucial questions on belonging, in-/hospitality and refugeeism at the time of the so-called “Migration Crisis.” In this respect, the book not only unveils the ambiguities of the Western Humanitarian Reason, but also the fluctuations of Muslim solidarity, especially towards Kurdish minorities. My reading of the novel will ultimately show how Hussein’s criticism goes beyond the canonical East/West opposition when talking about migration encounters, and stands as a universal essay on the notion of Otherness, thus (re)attributing virtuous connotations to the ghurba as a site of self-reflection and identity reconstruction.

Narratives bearing on the experiences of forced migration are increasingly numerous within contemporary Arab literary production. The present essay aims to analyse Hudā Barakāt's novel Barīd al-layl (2017) by setting it within this 30-year trend. By bringing several generations of Arab displaced onto the scene, this book is particularly representative of the paths that led to the current 'refugee crisis' and acts as a traitd'union between past and present experiences of flight. By choosing to use the epistolary form, Barakāt gives back their agency to her 'subaltern characters' and grounds their exile back where it started: in the contexts of war and repression of their countries, but also in the loathing of their dysfunctional families. In this way, the experience of displacement is no longer romanticised as in the past, through the fictional tools of nostalgia and memory, but relocated in the harshness of its reality. Shelters provided by the West to these fleeing people ultimately prove to be spaces of nightmare and bestiality. Drawing on the Derridean concept of 'hostipitality', my analysis of the novel will show how Barakāt focuses on describing the side effects of 'bad welcoming' on both asylum seekers and the host society, unveiling mechanisms of bio-power and subterranean violence that make the whole world a dystopian representation of humanity in its twilight years.

Amǧad Nāṣir is one of the avant-garde figures of the generation of Arab writers born in the fifties and sixties. In his verses we find not only the peculiarities of the Jordanian literary production, but also influences from the rest of the Arab world and beyond. His exile proves to be a crucial element in the analysis of his works. The departure from the homeland and from his tribe does not entail the loss of the Bedouin Jordanian identity. He re-asserts it in a post-modern manner, forging an aesthetic of “counter-exile”. The poems from his second collection Munḏu Ǧal‘ād kāna yaṣ‘adu al-ǧabal (Since Gilead, he climbed the mountain, Beirut, 1981) exemplify his poetics as a hybrid of styles and themes, born from an intersection of tradition and innovation.

Cristina Dozio (Università degli Studi di Milano), “So far, so close: narrating work migration to the Gulf in Egyptian literature”.
Cristina Dozio (Università degli Studi di Milano), “So far, so close: narrating work migration to the Gulf in Egyptian literature”.

Dismantling the Migration-Terrorism nexus in Contemporary Arabic Literature
The recent terrorist attacks in European cities, together with the so-called “refugee crisis”, have reignited a debate on whether there might be a link between the two phenomena (Galantino, 2020). This Migration–Terrorism nexus is one of the most impacting consequences of the 9/11 on Western media and common imaginary, and resulted in a strengthened
securitization approach to border control (Santoro, 2018). The rise of ISIS in Syria and Iraq did nothing but complicating things further.
This complex issue has slid at the very heart of contemporary Arabic literature of forced displacement, which foregrounds the perspectives of migrants on flight, border-crossing andlife in Europe since the beginning of the last century (Sellman, 2013: 2-3), offering a brandnew narration of the reception crisis. Hayṯam Ḥusayn’s (Amouda, Syria, 1978) Qad lā yabqà aḥad, aġāṯā krīsty… ta'āly aqul laki kayfa a'iyš (2018) is the first part of a planned biographical trilogy dealing with the notion of the self and its image in the mirror of the other, which focuses exactly on this problematic
portrait of the Refugee, painted as a Russian doll that reproduces itself and relives its tragedy over and over.
The present proposal aims then at analyzing this book of pseudo-fiction in order to illustrate how Arab intellectuals in exile has responded to the negative representation of asylum seekers, depicted as potential terrorists.

Narratives bearing on the experiences of forced migration are increasingly numerous within contemporary Arab literary production. The present essay aims to analyse Hudā Barakāt's novel Barīd al-layl (2017) by setting it within this 30-year trend. By bringing several generations of Arab displaced onto the scene, this book is particularly representative of the paths that led to the current ‘refugee crisis’ and acts as a trait-d’union between past and present experiences of flight. By choosing to use the epistolary form, Barakāt gives back their agency to her ‘subaltern characters’ and grounds their exil back where it started: in the contexts of war and repression of their countries, but also in the loathing of their dysfunctional families. In this way, the experience of displacement is no longer romanticised as in the past, through the fictional tools of nostalgia and memory, but relocated in the harshness of its reality. Shelters provided by the West to these fleeing people ultimately prove to be spaces of nightmare and bestiality. Drawing on the Derridean concept of ‘hostipitality’, my analysis of the novel will show how Barakāt focuses on describing the side effects of ‘bad welcoming’ on both asylum seekers and the host society, unveiling mechanisms of bio-power and subterranean violence that make the whole world a dystopian representation of humanity in its twilight years.
