It is often assumed that these alleged « dark ages » were incapable of critical thinking and that the catholic faith was challenged only by « heresy », « superstition » or the « remnants of paganism ». In other words, belief was only challenged by other beliefs, but not by doubts or unbelief. This paper is the first systematic survey of evidence regarding this issue. Over the entire period, central beliefs of the Christian faith were seriously put in question: the resurrection of the dead, the material existence of hell, divine providence, miracles, real presence in the eucharist. The first medieval demonstration of the existence of God was also drafted during this period. Quite often, these doubts are defended in public and well-argued. They rely on empirical evidence, on the observation of nature and on the inconsistencies of the doctrine. This is not to say, of course, that early medieval society in general was not religious as a whole; but the findings of this article suggest that skepticism in general has a deep anthropological dimension and cannot be considered to be the prerogative of more « advanced » historical periods, as opposed to any « dark ages ». The existence of this skepticism also helps to explain many specific features of this period of time: the widespread indifference towards clerical threats (of hell, for instance) and towards excommunication, the lack of religious zeal, the few cases of conversion to another religion and, lastly, the rise of popular heresy in the high middle ages – some of which heresies eventually discarded beliefs which had already been questioned many times during the previous centuries.

They contribute to a better understanding of this literary genre in the Early Middle Ages. The two first rolls were copied in ms. BNF latin 13351 and come from the abbeys of Saint-Denis and Prüm. Their preamble is their most interesting feature, since only a handful of early medieval rolls, most of them having been copied in formularies, have preserved their preamble. The Saint-Denis roll is stylistically similar to the few other known preambles, all of them copied in ms. BNF, latin 11379. The Prüm roll, on the contrary, is a very original piece. It gives new evidence of the connections between Prüm and West Francia through the End of the Carolingian period. Moreover, it is written in a mannered and convoluted latin, which draws its inspiration from the works of Aldhelm of Malmesbury. Rolls such as this one were obviously part of the cultural competition between monasteries. On another hand, ms. BNF, latin 1597a, has preserved several answers to mortuary rolls, that were copied in it as a formulary. All of these answers come from where they were copied : Rheims, mostly the abbey of Saint-Remy, and date back to the first half of the 10th century. These texts make reference to the young archbishop Hugo, son of Herbert II of Vermandois, and to the frater hospitalis Giso, attested by other sources. These references make it possible to date these pieces in the 920s, shortly after Herbert’s seizure of power in Rheims, thus confirming B. Bischoff’s palaeographical datation.

Both texts are preserved in both mss. Graz, UB 724 (13th c.) and Munich, BSB, clm 6314 (9th c.). The doctrina and the appended letter have been considered as pseudepigraphs until now and therefore were never edited. They can be attributed to Alcuin on the basis of external criteria. They are explicitely attributed to Alcuin in both manuscripts, where they also figure in Alcuinian corpuses. They can also be attributed to Alcuin on the basis of internal criteria. There are several textual parallels between the appended letter and Alcuin’s letters on the one hand, and between the doctrina de fide and Alcuin’s De fide sanctae Trinitatis on another hand. From a reference to « the emperor », we infer that the letter was written after 800. Parallels with the De fide and a straigthforward reference to Alcuin’s withdrawal from his multiple abbacy, together with parallels with two letters from the first half of 802, strongly suggest a datation in that period, exactly when Alcuin started to write the De fide sanctae Trinitatis. Each of the two manuscripts has preserved a sligthly different text of the letter appended to the doctrina. Alcuin sent the first version to a group of bishops ; he sent the second one, rewritten and with a post-scriptum added to it, to one specific bishop. The place of origin of the manuscripts and several parallels with Alcuin’s letters suggest that the bishops of the first version were the bishops of Bavaria and the bishop of the second version was their superior, archbishop Arn of Salzburg. The doctrina is one more piece of evidence for the Carolingian correctio in the years around 800, and more specifically of the search for, compilation, and composition of professions of faith and commentaries on the creed in the years that followed the end of the Adoptionist controversy.

Doctrinal debate and literary genre in Carolingian times: the theological works of Gottschalk of Orbais
This article studies the composition of the theological works of Gottschalk of Orbais. The manuscript is composed of a juxtaposition of scedulae (drafts, biblical and patristic collections, letters…), which surely reflects the will of Gottschalk in some respects, but is also the result of the transmission of his documents after his death. These papers include in particular polemical handbooks for debating. These scedulae give an unusual picture of how polemical texts circulated during the Carolingian controversy on double predestination in the 850s; they make it possible to reappraise the impact of doctrinal debate among the lower clergy.

Doctrinal debate was by no means limited to the elite circles connected with royal and episcopal power. A wider constituency was involved, as is shown by the well-known controversy on double predestination (840s–60s). During this debate, monks, rural priests and lower clerics read, disputed and circulated treatises and booklets, and questioned the authority of their superiors. The reaction of the clerical elite to the extension of the sphere of debate was ambivalent. A wider discussion was discouraged by a discourse of self-restraint that emphasized the virtue of simplicitas, but also by disciplinary means. Yet dissent was not entirely stifled, so leading churchmen had to convince their subordinates while not officially acknowledging the latter as their equal discussion partners. This required complex strategies of communication, which only become visible by investigating all aspects of such doctrinal debates.

Over the past decades, the war of succession which tore appart the Carolingian empire in 840-843 ... more Over the past decades, the war of succession which tore appart the Carolingian empire in 840-843 has been the focus of a renewed scholarly interest, which put forward notions like publicity (in particular through Nithard’s work), aristocratic identity, fidelity and competition. The "aequa lance" settlement of Verdun and the rule of "fraternitas" eventually reconciled the fidelities owed by the aristocrats to the emperor Lothar with that owed to Louis and Charles. The consequences of that competition reach beyond the Carolingians: the reign of Charles the Bald is often acknowledged as the christening of the French "monarchie contractuelle". The competition between Carolingian pretenders was caused, historians argue, by the contradictory successoral settlements of Louis the Pious, which threatened the stability of the fides. On the one hand, magnates certainly seeked to make much of the competition and maximize their profits but, on another hand, these keepers of social order were torn between their fidelities towards different kings, which eventually leveled the legitimacy of the pretenders. This paper focuses on the reaction of the Carolingians to this crisis of fidelity and on how they endeavoured to keep tidy the Carolingian social structure. It also aims to show that Nithard’s History was commissionned by Charles the Bald to restore cohesion in his camp after his alliance with Louis the German in May 841, an alliance which would undermine the fidelity of his men and the legitimacy of his claims.

Jahrhundert vorbereiten.

While the causes of the Carolingian renaissance (8th–9th century) and its cultural accomplishments are well documented, the cultural transformations that followed around 900, when Europe is hit by Viking and Magyar invasions, when the Carolingian empire collapses, and a feudal society is born, are still somewhat of a riddle. This collective work tackles the matter with a new methodology, presenting an abundance of manuscripts from the realms of the law, literature, history and even music. It describes a vibrant intellectual life embattled with a tormented social and political context, but surprisingly durable and dynamic.

Berlin, SBPK, Hamilton 132.
This article provides the edition and commentary of a theological treatise copied minuscule in ms. Berlin, SBPK, Hamilton 132. This text, which we propose to call Epistola contra hereticos, intends to refute an otherwise unknown heresy born around 800; these heretics allegedly claimed that Christ did not rise in his “true” flesh and did not keep a “real” human body after his ascension. This paper deconstructs the heresiological discourse behind these accusations, according to which these “heretics” are the heirs of both arianism and adoptianism. Nonetheless, internal critique and the external evidence of Alcuin’s letter 41 tend to show that such discussions on the risen body of Christ did take place in the wake of adoptianism. The treatise cannot be attributed to any known author under Charlemagne’s reign. The form of the text (questions and answers about biblical verses, instructions on how to refute the opponent) bears witness to a local sphere of theological debate, as soon as the first wave of the Carolingian reform.
The manuscript El Escorial, Monasterio de San Lorenzo, Camarin de las Reliquias, vitrina 25 (CLA XI 1628-9) is the oldest manuscript witness of Augustine’s De baptismo contra donatistas : he was long believed to be an autograph of Augustine himself. It contains a corpus of several hundreds marginalia, also to be found in its apograph, ms. Oxford, Bodleian Library, laud. misc. 130 : they have not been studied until now. A special feature of these notes, this article shows, is that they make direct reference to their writing context. They accuse anonymous bishops of having anathemized « Fathers » dead in the peace of the Church. These notes must be framed, this article argues, in the context of the Three Chapters Schism (540s-570s). In spite of meaningful parallels with Facundus’ Contra Mocianum and the Epistula in defensione III capitulorum can be drawn, one should be careful and refrain from assigning these notes, which bear witness of a local conflict arisen on the occasion of the Three Chapter schism, to a particular author or circle.

They consist in marginal alpha and omega combined with crosses inside the text : they were used during the composition of the Excerpta ex operibus sancti Augustini around 500. They make it possible to date the ms. Pal. lat. 210 approximately one century before the date to which it was previously assigned on palaeographical grounds. This study sheds new light not only on the making of Eugippius’ Excerpta and on the value of the different branches of its manuscript transmission, but also on the origins of the collection De bono coniugali, on the rise of the use of excerption signs in late Antiquity and on the criteria of datation of the roman uncial.

This article proposes the edition of two short texts (a doctrina de fide and a letter appended to it, called admonitio) and discusses their attribution to Alcuin of York and their datation in the first semester 802.

Jahrhundert vorbereiten.
