The chapter discusses the contradictions surrounding the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) through the narration of an energy balancing therapy involving Bach flwers and acupressure. Using autoethnography, I inserted in this chapter some references to the CAM treatments which allowed the dissemination of this medicine in the West. I also try to display another aspect of the CAM responsible for the emergence of a new paradigm which can create delusions of omnipotence and feelings of guilt when people do not have critical spirit.

The autoethnographic method has been an important contribution to the development of medical anthropology in Spain. This article first reviews and explores documents published before 1980 that are usually classified as literature and autobiography and are linked to the health-disease-care process, a paradigmatic example of which is Ramona Via's diary Com neixen els Catalans [How Catalans are born] published in 1972. The second part of the article is focused on contributions carried out since the 1980s using the concept of autoethnography, which have as their object the body, health and illness based on a subjective ethnographic experience. This period, unlike the first, is characterized by the emergence of anthropologist authors who have promoted the development of this method, legitimized by the Tarragona School and substantialized in the first Spanish conference of autoethnography in 2015.

The article analyzes the relationship between medicine and anthropology in Italy to highlight the key role of Tullio Seppilli, one of the founders of the international medical anthropology, from its collaboration with the “Centro Sperimentale per l’Educazione Sanitaria” in Perugia after World War II. Seppilli, a professional anthropologist, is located between two intellectual traditions. The first is the development by the medici condotti of folk medicine studies in Italy in the late nineteenth century and its the evolution within the Italian folklore to the concept of “demologia.” The second, developed after the Second World War, is the political commitment of doctors and anthropologists for opening a collaborative space between professional anthropology and health education. The pivotal role of Tullio Seppilli during this period is explored through some articles from his youth in which he established a dialogue with the new strategies defined by WHO for health interventions in dep...

Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) and New Age therapies (NAt) are increasingly widespread in the West. Although the variety of therapies they recommend is very extensive, as is the variety of beliefs and practices, there are common ideas shared across both such as the concept of holism and the notion of energy. The case studies examined in this paper, Vittorio and Sol, both suffered from severe personal problems that caused a state of general malaise. They managed to address them through the holistic world. Through their experiences, it is possible to highlight the contradictions of CAM-NAt in the West. While, on one hand, these represent a form of resistance to capitalist culture, on the other there is a risk that CAM-NAt could end up reinforcing capitalistic logic through the establishment of an ‘individualistic holism’. The only solution to this situation seems to be a focus on the exercise of personal critical faculties, and an openness to different ways of conceiving the body, the health and diseases, but without, however, being drawn into the moralistic and individualist view that sometimes accompanies these

ABSTRACT: The role of the medical folklore and the relationship of hegemony and subalternity are fundamental elements to understand the emergence of folk medicine as an object of study. The article reconstructs the history of the concept of folk medicine. It focuses in particular on the Italian and Spanish context. The article also pays attention to what it means to talk about folk medicine today, on the role of alternative and complementary medicine, and on the socio-cultural mechanisms that have allowed the passage from folk medicine in the classic sense to glo-local folk medicine. This new denomination intends to breathe new life into the concept, and to frame it within a much broader, hybrid and plural context.

Demographic change in Europe has resulted in an aging population, which presents new challenges for implementing and managing long-term care (LTC) systems. One solution aims to increase the efficiency of LTC by using digital technologies. This article focuses on professionals' opinions of the use of digital technologies in the administration of Spain's long-term care law (Law 39/2006, December 14, LAPAD). This qualitative research is part of SoCaTel, an H2020 project on the co-creation of LTC services in Europe. Ten focus groups were held with health professionals, care-taking relatives, and care workers, and six semistructured in-depth interviews were conducted with care recipients in Catalonia, Spain. This article presents the data collected from professionals. Professionals reacted positively to the use of digital technologies, in contrast to some previous studies that highlight professionals' strong resistance to digitalization. Professionals saw digitalization as a way to speed up and simplify administrative processes. However, they also identified serious obstacles to efficient digitalization.

"Traditional healers in the Parma district: an ethnographic inquiry
The results of a study conducted between 2011-2012 on traditional healers, men and women, in the Parma district (Emilia Romagna Region) both in the Appennine area both in the plain, as well as in the urban area of Parma are reported below.
The inquiry concerns the range of illnesses which draw attention, the articulation and the heterogeneity of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (especially the “segnatura”), the modality of their “initiation”, the place and the meaning through which curative activity takes place in the cycle of life. In addition, the patients of these types of traditional healers are taken into account, especially in order to identify their motivation, ideological frame of mind that conducts them towards this resource (exclusively or in combination with the biomedical treatment), as well as their subjective assessment of the consequent efficacy. On the whole emerges a kind of persistent, even if heterogeneous, endurance for this kind of practice not limiting it to solely marginalized areas and social classes.
Keywords: traditional healers, segnatura, Parma district, traditional medicine.
