In a context of greater knowledge volatility, professionals are among those who are most struggling with the challenges of using knowledge in their daily professional lives. This article is the result of an ethnographic study on the work contexts of social workers in Portugal. We analyze the emergence of practical wisdom as a configuration of knowledge to act contextually and overcome the limitations of scientific knowledge in Social Work. We found that practical wisdom refers, above all, to situated knowledge that manifests itself in naturalizations, improvisations, judgments and projections of action, below the discursive rationalization of reality by the professionals.

The article aims to develop the foundations of a sociocognitive theory that is based on the following hypothesis: professional knowledge has a dual form of knowing which allows the coexistence of tacit knowledge of doing and thinking with principles and abstract and formal knowledge in action contexts and practical situations, without merging or separating them completely. This dual way of using knowledge distinguishes it from other social uses of knowledge and from the general concept of professional knowledge. For this purpose, the article seeks to present a theoretical proposal for interdisciplinary dialogue among some branches of cognitive psychology and some of the most renowned social theories on the duality in the structuration of social life.

[en] Identity awareness about the purposes and means of social work: results of an empirical study of social workers Abstract. This article aims to present part of the empirical results of a survey not based on a representative sample applied to social workers in northern Portugal. A questionnaire was applied to obtain information about the discursive awareness that these professionals have of the relationship between formal knowledge and professional identity through the use they make of their knowledge about the great purposes and means of social intervention in their work context. The selection of these two themes for this empirical study is justified because, hypothetically, were found to be the most general and cross all sectors of social work activity and that, therefore, may have greater institutional value to support and strengthen professional identity. As a result, the data presented were intended to answer two hypotheses: a) to know the degree of consistency and unity that exists between the knowledge about the purpose and the knowledge about the means of intervention; b) to know the degree of transversality and homogeneity that exists in the use of this knowledge considering the generational, institutional formation and sectorial variation of activity. The main conclusions are that there is a sufficiently high degree of consistency and transversality in the use of this knowledge to support the strengthening of a professional identity in social work.

With this text we intend to present a revision of literature regarding relationships between professions and organizations. We have constructed hypotheses about this relationship and about the various modalities and forms that this relationship can take based on the existing knowledge on social work in the non-profit sector in Portugal.
In a first moment, the goal of this text is to substantiate the concept of bureaucratic professional work. We have taken inspiration mainly in the contributions of Charles Derber, Mirko Noordegraaf and Henry Mintzberg on professional bureaucracies and diverse literature on Sociology of Professions and Sociology of Organizations that seek to equate the coexistence of professional work with the bureaucratic hierarchies in organizations.
Secondly, we explain the relationship between professional bureaucratic work and the historical transformations in present day post-industrial societies that allow us to intercept and converge the institutionalized forms or work organization and those of the State, with changes in professions. Based on this explanation an abstract model is presented for the analysis of the relationship between bureaucratization and professionalization, which unfolds in two associated typologies; a typology of organizational forms and a typology of bureaucratic professional work.
Finally, in a third moment of the text, this analysis model is detailed with contents pertaining to social work within the scope of the non-profit sector, from results of several empirical studies about the third sector made in Portugal.

Over the past decade and a half a new international perspective of sociological analysis on the professional groups has gradually emerged: the professionalism and professionalization ceased to be analyzed in opposition or dichotomy with bureaucracies. Within this theoretical perspective, this article operationalizes the hybrid concept of Bureaucratic Professional Work and applies it to the social work in 35 non-profit organizations (NPOs) of social services in northern Portugal, partners of the Welfare mix. For this purpose were conducted 63 structured interviews with social workers on how they perceive and shape their own work in relation to different levels and types of external control and centralization of decisions and of routinization of procedures and predictability of results.

The article discusses researches carried out
in Portugal and in Brazil on professional knowledge
respectively of social workers and health technicians,
supported by the concept of sociocognition — the knowledge
implied in social experience — whose analytical
sense requires to identify work situations, practical
and cognitive competences or modes of cognition that
structure and sustain the action of workers in their
situations. Such elements of professional work were
organized into a typology of situational sociocognition.
Professional knowledge, with a predominantly tacit
character, is equivalent to the knowledge produced and
mobilized in these situations. The first research carried
out in Brazil, in this sense, was done with Technicians
in Oral Health, after which the analysis was, in some
aspects, extrapolated to the team of Family Health
team technicians. Among the results, it is possible to
emphasize that the main practical competence demonstrated
by the studied technicians is the embracement,
whereas the mode of cognition or cognitive competence
that manifests the most is of an associative or selective
intuitive character. Practical experience tends to
be more recognized than technical training, although
ethnographies of professional knowledge may help to
make the relation between these two dimensions of
professional work more explicit.

This article intends to summarise the main conclusions of the ethnographical research that I carried out with primary school teachers in the 1990s in Portugal. This summary is based on the research undertaken in Portugal on education, work and knowledge in professional groups. In this background, the concept of professional culture and the ethnographical method it serves is explained. The culture and professionalism of teachers is characterised through reference to the relations of power that are developed by this group in relation to the educational policies of democratisation of teaching that have been implemented in Portugal since the end of the 80s. The study highlights the duality of meaning existing between the context of professional teaching in practice and the context of political action in education.

The authors present a literature review on the relations between professions and organizations, inspired by the contributions of Charles Derber, Mirko Noordegraaf, Henry Mintzberg, and Richard Scott, among others. Based on this review, they propose various hypotheses on this relationship, drawing on the concept of professional office work and an abstract analytical model for the relationship between bureaucratization and professionalization that unfolds

The purpose of this communication/texte is to describe and explain why the mastery of social theory and abstract knowledge, together with a small experience of social research, are insufficient for young beginners of ethnographic research, able to be more effective in their activities. Through out this communication it is going to be demonstrated there are some social interaction misleads in the field of research that are originated in the lack of a know-how on the field.
The considerations I will do about learning knowledge that enables the correct usage of Etnography are based in my experience of mentoring and supervision of professional etnographies for the past 10 years with social researchers with some research experience (all of them with post-graduations in Social Sciences) although lacking knowledge on the ethnography method as well as practical and theoretical Anthropology that would give the background for a field research of that nature. Due to time limitations in this communication I will only make some remarks about this accumulated experience.

This communication will have as main goal to make known to the public theresearch work of a team based in the North of Portugal, which is dedicated to the theme of the Social Analysis of Professional Knowledge in Technical-Intellectual Work (ASPTI). To this effect, I will take as an example the empirical work done on clinical-veterinarian activity and I will show, by focusing on the concept on professional culture, the several disciplinary contributions and the diverse dimensions of analysis that we have developed in this line of research. More specifically, the professional culture of veterinarian clinical personnel will be
described and analyzed in its practical-cognitive dimension, in its identitarianrelational dimension and in its discursive-reflective dimension, emphasising an approach inspired by ethnomethodology, on the francophone concept of ergonomic activity, on the psychology of situated cognition and on a conjuncture vision of the practice, of Bourdian inspiration.

The main objective of this paper is to contribute to the discussion, in theoretical terms, on the use of the knowledge, during both the social and the technical encounters between extension advisers and farmers. This reflection result from a research project (interviews and ethnographical observation) about extension advisers of farmer’s organizations (FO). In nowadays, in Tras-os-Montes and Alto-Douro (TMAD), we can find around 150 FO and 300 FO extension advisers. In Portugal, actually, such organizations assume the main part of the technical support to farmers, and private organizations and State services play a minor role. These extension advisers perform a variety of tasks of different categories or types, including: supervision of activities; technical advice (office and field work levels); project planning and monitoring; training; reception and analysis of farm subsidies' applications; administrative work; replacing the Directors in some duties; management of on-going pr...
