Bramantino

The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana’s Adoration of the Christ Child painted by the young Bartolomeo Suardi, later called Bramantino, includes two figures – a classically dressed man in the background on the left, and a woman standing in the foreground at the opposite corner – whose identity is controversial. Are they the Emperor Augustus and the Tiburtine Sibyl, as first proposed by Adolfo Venturi? If so, however, why are they not looking at an apparition of the Virgin and Child inside the sun, as is usual in depictions of the Emperor's vision, but instead are represented as part of a Nativity scene? Is he Augustus, but without the Sibyl? Could they be the poet Virgil and a virgin saint? Or might the woman be the midwife Salome described in the apocryphal Gospels?
In this article I argue that these two figures are indeed Augustus and the Sibyl, and that the unusual composition devised by the young Bramantino can be explained by connecting its imagery to a less common visualization that was available in this period in contemporary Florentine theatre and, probably, also in the presepio staged around the Holy Child in the Franciscan basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome. In both instances, the emperor and the seeress were shown in close proximity to an adoration of the Christ Child. Moreover, I propose that Bramantino’s painting does not show the vision of Augustus, but rather the earlier premonition of the Sibyl herself. I then proceed to contextualize the Ambrosiana’s Adoration within the frequent selection of Nativity scenes in Franciscan-influenced art produced for private devotion in Lombardy from the 1450s onwards. Finally, I suggest that, while clearly a depiction of the birth of Jesus, the Ambrosiana’s Adoration should be also linked to the topic of a future institution of peace on earth, a theme that underlies many of its elements.

Based on documents, it can not be established with precision when Bartolomeo Suardi met for the first time Bramante. However, it is likely that the two artists met in the early eighties of the fifteenth century in Bergamo, when they were both working within the artistic scene of goldsmiths. From Bergamo they moved to Milan to work on the construction of Santa Maria presso San Satiro and it is precisely here that, in a document that dates 1489, we see appearing for the first time the nickname of «Magistro Bertholameo Brabantino depinctore». Hence, it appears that the fame surrounding Bartolomeo Suardi and his peculiar nickname mentioned, was mostly related and deeply connected from the very beginning to the person of Donato Bramante. The purpose of this essay is double. On the one hand we evaluated the relation between Bramante and Bramantino through some interesting analogies such as the examination of specific architectonic details within the first pictorial works of Bramantino. These architectonic details seem to refer directly to those canons and examples that Bramante was in that time revealing to the artistic scene of Milano. On the other hand, and as a conclusion, we analyzed in a more comprehensive way the term ‘bramantismo’, an expression often used by the artistic literature as an automatic interpretation to analyze the works of those artists who were at that time gravitating around the master from Urbino who chose Milan as his privileged place of activity.

Il libro è costituito da dieci saggi che indagano altrettanti argomenti artistici legati a una Terra di confine: prendono spunto da opere, artisti e testimonianze conservate a Bergamo, la città più occidentale della Serenissima. I pittori studiati sono riletti criticamente a partire da un'aggiunta al catalogo, da una nuova interpretazione delle fonti o del loro percorso stilistico. Bernardo Zenale, Lorenzo Lotto, Giovanni Cariani e Giovanni Battista Moroni sono alcuni dei principali protagonisti di questa storia. Uno dei fili rossi della ricerca indaga la sopravvivenza e il riuso di modelli figurativi da parte di botteghe familiari di pittori (i Marinoni e i Santacroce). L'interesse per la storia della critica e l'esercizio della connoisseurship sono i motori che alimentano la costruzione delle indagini. Nella parte finale si affacciano due classici della materia: Giovanni Morelli e Roberto Longhi (visto attraverso gli occhi del giovane Alessandro Conti).

Bramantino's Noli me tangere features a rare detail: Christ is touching the forehead of the Magdalen with three fingers. Starting from this fresco, this article will discuss the Noli me tangere imagery in Italy in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.

Did European aristocratic families retain memories of their past? It would seem obvious to answer this question in the affirmative, and yet the Lombard case is less straightforward, as after entering the Habsburg system in 1535 Milanese aristocracy experienced memory issues. However, not all grand Lombard families forget their past, as shown by specific past-related objects recorded in the inventories of the Sforza of Caravaggio and some branches of the Visconti family. The quality of inventories as sources for the memories of families are at the centre of this chapter.

La lettera che apre la novella di Costantino Boccali, gettatosi nell’Adige per conquistare la donna amata, è una sorta di monito ai «segretarii de la natura» che pensano di conosce la ragione delle cose e difendono a spada tratta la propria posizione arrivando ad insultare coloro che non condividono le loro idee, non rendendosi conto che «uomini siamo e possiamo di leggero errare».
