Munich, September 29th, 2010 - metaio GmbH, the leading expert on Augmented Reality (AR), held a conference in Munich, called "insideAR", with focus on current practical applications in marketing and industry as well as on the future of this exciting field, which is being identified by many analysts as one of the most disruptive technologies of the years to come. 250 attendees from many countries and industries were able to follow insightful presentations by Intel, Nokia, Siemens and others about their company`s contributions and plans regarding AR. As the many money-earning practical applications on display during the conference demonstrated, Augmented Reality is definitely here to stay and has found its place in everyday life. metaio, as conference host, took opportunity to present its view of market opportunities, its vision of a seamless interconnection between the real and the digital world, and the kind of advanced technologies available already or being developed at the metaio labs at this point in time.

The founders of metaio, Thomas Alt and Peter Meier, opened the conference with the message that the technology has matured to the point that more and more practical applications are being implemented today in marketing and industry. AR has definitely left the hype stage and is entering our daily life in many useful ways. Pointing to the results of a market study by ABI Research, with an exploding market size for augmented reality of 360 million USD by 2014, metaio´s CEO Thomas Alt could demonstrate how closely the revenue curve of metaio matches the growth rate, both past and projected, of this new and vibrant industry.

http://nintendo3dsblog.com This is a very impressive trailer from Nintendo that gives a great overview of a lot of exciting features of the Nintendo 3DS including tag mode, the augmented reality game "target shooting" and the revised operating system.
In June, Appcelerator surveyed 2,700 mobile developers and published the results in a report that we covered. The June report showed that developers prefer to develop for iOS, but that they had a more positive long-term outlook on Android; fast forward three months, and Android has widened its lead in long-term outlook. Further, developers see Android as being more capable, more open, and offering better support for multiple devices.
After running June’s report, Appcelerator wanted to get a better look at the "why" behind the results as well as a more in-depth look at how developers view a wider range of devices. Enter the Q4 report: among the more general findings, Android’s long-term outlook has risen, while iOS’s has dropped – from 54% to 58.6% for Android, and 40.4% to 34.9% for iOS.

It has been known for a while that Kno had a dual-screen tablet in the works. It's now announced a new single-screen model promising to be a more affordable but equally useful school bag accessory. Aimed specifically at students the massive 14" tablet was previously only going to be available with two screens, but realising that a cheaper device was necessary, consumers will now have a cheaper option.
Kno's goal is for the tablet to replace textbooks and with a large high-resolution screen, as well as internet access and handwriting recognition, it seems like it could transform many classrooms.
Kno's tablet of course features stiff competition from the iPad which already has a promising app for delivering textbooks and although it has already been adopted by some schools, those starting college may want something kinder on their bank balance. If it can get enough publishers signed up to its book store it's not hard to see how this could be a hit. So far McGraw Hill, Pearson and Wiley have all signed up.
Both tablets should be available by the end of the year and will be competitively priced. The dual-screen device is already said to be priced at under $1000 and the single-screen version looks like it will be significantly cheaper.

Milky Boat is a computer game installation with augmented reality elements.
The main part of this installation is a wooden construction with a tub, in which a model boat is floating on white liquid. One can control the model boat with a game controller through her virtual world, the video projection on the milk. There are lifebelts and water mines around in this world.
The gamers goal is to collect as many lifebelts and to set the high score. If the boat collides with one of the mines, the game is over.
The collision is followed by an audio-visual explosion while the model boat is pulled under water by an internal mechanism. The boat is sunken.
When all the belts and mines are out of sight, the model boat comes up again and another round is to be played.
Milky Boat collects liferings, and may be loses in the end the justification of this action.

The final project of my Interactive Design class that asked a group of student to design an augmented reality application for use on a college campus that utilizes an iPhone.

動画は...ちょっと笑ってしまうところも有るが、さすがクオリティを重視するTMだけあって、3D表示にこだわりがあるようだ。もう少し使ってみたくなるインターフェースにしてほしいところだ。
