The subject of this study is the so-called "Surzhyk", a mixed Ukrainian-Russian variety used by millions of people in Ukraine, sometimes alongside Ukrainian and, less commonly, alongside Russian. More specifically, the focus here is on the lexicon, addressing the following questions: (i) To what extent is the mixed speech lexicon influenced by Ukrainian or Russian? (ii) Does the distribution of Ukrainian or Russian lexemes reveal a reduction in variation, i.e. patterns of stabilisation? In other words, are there tendencies for one of the two competing, synonymous, or functionally equivalent Ukrainian or Russian lexemes to prevail over the other? Many Ukrainian linguists have stereotypically claimed for years that the distribution of Ukrainian and Russian elements in Surzhyk is unpredictable, spontaneous, if not chaotic. It is worth noting that these opinions are not based on comprehensive, systematic empirical evidence and largely ignore theoretical developments in the field of code-mixing. In contrast, by means of a quantitative analysis of an extensive corpus and a focus on intra-sentential code-mixing, this study demonstrates that the majority of recorded lexical Ukrainian-Russian competitions exhibit a clear fixation on one of the two expressions, resulting in a reduction in variation. In these instances, one of the two expressions prevails extensively across the entire region of Central Ukraine and the Black Sea Coast. Surzhyk is evidently evolving towards a "fused lect". A smaller portion of the examined instances reveals such stabilisation only in certain parts of the survey area, and another equally small portion exhibits widespread variability. In general, Ukrainian and Russian lexemes are roughly balanced in quantity. Keywords Suržyk • code-mixing • fused lects • Ukrainian-Russian language contact • quantitative corpus linguistics Keywords Суржик • смешение кодов • слитые лекты ("fused lects") • украинско-русский языковой контакт • количественная корпусная лингвистика

This Event Related Potentials (ERP) study investigates auditory processing of sentences with so-called code-switches in Russian learners of German. It has often been argued that switching between two languages results in extra processing cost, although it is not completely clear yet what exactly causes these costs. ERP presents a good method to (start to) answer this question, since different ERP effects provide insight in the underlying processes that take place. We presented three groups of speakers (German first-language speakers, Russian speakers with intermediate and Russian speakers with very good knowledge of German as a second language) with German sentences that either ended ‘normally’ i.e. with a word that fitted the meaning of the sentence, or with a semantically unexpected word, or with the Russian translation of the semantically normal German word. Comparing the two groups of Russian speakers allows for examining the influence of proficiency on the processing of code-switches. The results showed that the semantically unexpected word elicited an N400 in both the first language (L1) and the more proficient second language (L2) group, but not in the less proficient L2 group. Code-switches resulted in an N400-like pattern in all three groups, and also in a Late Positive Component (LPC), which was most pronounced in the less proficient L2 group. This positivity is, although somewhat later, quite similar to the well-known P300 effect that is found with stimuli with unexpected external properties.

The study aims to show that the different usage frequencies of Ukrainian, Russian and «Suržyk» in everyday life in Ukraine can be described and mapped as a continuum of «tricodalism». This sets it apart from previous representations that usually assume a historical-political demarcation of sub-areas and consequently tend to indicate a linguistic bisection of the country into a Ukrainian-speaking area encompassing the west and the central region, and a Russian-speaking area in the east and south. The approach proposed here employs empirical data on usage of the three codes as the basis for its structuration. Starting from the mean frequencies of code usage in individual oblasts, a cluster analysis groups these into larger areas and clarifies their internal variation. This result is not just a more continuous picture of the linguistic landscape in Ukraine, but also a more coherent one.

Restructuring in a Mesolect: A Case Study on the Basis of the Formal Variation of the Infinitive in Ukrainian–Russian SurzhykIn addition to Ukrainian and Russian, Ukraine is linguistically characterized by a Ukrainian–Russian mixed speech called Surzhyk. Given the background of Ukrainian–Russian relations and the emancipation of Ukrainian from the previously dominant Russian, Surzhyk has become the subject of an emotional discussion in independent Ukraine. The majority of Ukrainian scholars working with pre-Labovian and implicit theoretical sociolinguistic (and contact linguistic) models view the distribution of Ukrainian and Russian elements in Surzhyk as spontaneous and chaotic. Furthermore, Surzhyk – together with many who use it – has been widely stigmatized, even by linguists, as a post-colonial legacy from the times of Russian and Soviet dominance.Taking as an example the forms of verb infinitives, a corpus-based quantitative analysis of about 10,000 instances evidences that S...

REGIONAL PROPERTIES IN UKRAINIAN-RUSSIAN MIXED SPEECH (SURZHYK) AND THE INFLUENCE OF DIALECTS: PREFIXES AND PREPOSITIONS VID / OT Ukrainian surzhyk is a form of mixed Ukrainian-Russian code influenced not only by standard dialects of Ukrainian and Russian, but also by Ukrainian dialects. In the analyses of the kind and intensity of the influence of Ukrainian or Russian on surzhyk, particularly problematic are the cases in which a given structural phenomenon occurs in some Ukrainian dialects and in the standard language, while in other dialects it is identical or very similar to the phenomenon occurring in Russian. Examples of such language units include the prefixes and vid / ot prepositions discussed in this article. Based on the corpus material, in this study the authors used quantitative methods to present the possibility to differentiate the basic tendencies that determine the way and scope of dialectal influences and both standard languages (Ukrainian and Russian). The main con...

This stabilization can be interpreted best as an instance of structure building in a mesolect between Ukrainian dialects on the one hand and, on the other hand, Russian and (to a certain degree) Ukrainian standard languages in competing roles during the recent history of Ukraine.

The study analyses the linguistic situation in the three Ukrainian oblasts on the Black Sea coast using survey data collected from 1,200 respondents before the Russian attack on Ukraine. At the end of the 18th century, this region was the core of a “new Russian” governate during Tsarist times. Previously, the region had been ruled by Tatars and there were neither Russian nor Ukrainian settlements. From the 19th century onwards, the Ukrainian and Russian population dominated. Since the annexation of the Crimea, these oblasts represent a crucial part of the Kremlin’s plan to establish an “expanded New Russia (Novorossiya)” under Moscow’s control – extending along the Ukrainian-Russian border and the northern Black Sea coast, reaching from Xarkiv to Odesa. This area is clearly at the forefront of Russia’s current war goals since controlling it would allow them to establish the strategically important land bridge to Crimea.Linguistically, the area undoubtedly belongs to those regions of...

[Русский вариант внизу]
Regional differences in Ukrainian-Russian mixed speech (Surzhyk) and the influence of traditional dialects: the prefixes and prepositions VID / OT:
Ukrainian Suržyk is a form of mixed Ukrainian-Russian speech that has not only been influenced by Standard Ukrainian and Russian but also by Ukrainian dialects. Analyses aiming to determine the type and extent of Ukrainian or Russian influence on Suržyk are confronted with a particular problem: cases in which a certain structural phenomenon is the same in some Ukrainian dialects as in Standard Ukrainian but in other dialects is very similar or identical to Standard Russian. This study investigates the prefixes and prepositions of the type VID / OT, which belong to this group. By using quantitative methods to analyse corpus material the study developed procedures for differentiating basic tendencies between the type and extent of the influence from the dialects and the two standard languages. The fundamental result regarding this phenomenon is that the variant from Standard Ukraine only becomes established in Suržyk in regions where the same variant is found in the dialectal surroundings exclusively. In contrast, in regions where both variants occur in the surrounding dialects or only the variant that corresponds to Russian, the Russian or Russian-like variant is present in Suržyk. In general, this means that in the mesolect Suržyk the regional variation in the breadth of the Ukrainian language area is being reduced by means of a process of “dialect levelling”.
