A comprehensive collection spanning five decades of full-length book reviews and short synopses by Giovanni Tabacco, whose scholarly concerns were never separate from a lifelong engagement as an exacting critical reader. Inspired by wide-ranging historical interests and with a special emphasis on issues of power and culture, these essays provide a valuable commentary to the progression of Medieval Studies during the twentieth century.

During the 12th and 13th century Bobbio entertained relationships only with Genoa and Piacenza among all the cities which surrounded the diocese. These cities established an efficient system of relationships – in which the economic and commercial aspects were of fundamental importance – and hindered the small episcopal see, which had been established in the Ligurian and Piacentine Appennine in 1014, from acquiring autonomy. A constant trait of the history of the diocese of Bobbio is the difficulty in managing the patrimony obtained from the constantly impoverishing monastery of Saint Columbanus, which gave the diocese substance on the territorial level. The Genoese archbishops, in whose circumscription the Bobbiese bishopric was included from 1133, deliberately chose not to intervene in the wake of such difficulties. They failed to appoint any exponent of the Ligurian clergy on Bobbio’s see (while clergy from Bobbio are attested as holders of the Ligurian see), thus showing a lack of interest on the part of the same Genoese Commune which was content to retain the use of the road through the Appennine guaranteed by the Commune of Piacenza. The growing involvement of the bishops and the Commune of the Emilian city in the overall developments in Bobbio can be measured from the fact that during the late 13th century a podestà and a bishop from Piacenza were appointed in Bobbio, thus establishing Bobbio’s peripheral status.

The first part of the essay addresses the problem of the origins of the Genoese notary Ingo Contardi by considering two, perhaps interconnected, hypotheses which raise the problem of social mobility: was his father a butcher or did he belong to a family of the lesser aristocracy? A brief discussion on his professional raining ensues. Here it is noted that only a single document written by him for the commune survives, as compares to several fragments of registers containing private contracts covering the years 1234-1262, that have been preserved. Overall, the article traces how this notary attracted clients and the different ways by which he managed to secure the loyalty of two specific segments of his clientele: on the one hand a group of drapers and the artisans connected to them, and on the other a group of noble families, some of which joined into an albergum at the end of the thirteenth century. For what concerns the artisans, Ingo Contardi chose to be easily available to them by establishing his workplace in front of the store run by his brother Bonaventura, a draper. In order to secure the fealty of the aristocratic families he gauged his professional behaviour carefully, bringing out their internal bonds, perhaps acting also as a bridge to some fringes of the Popolo.

The aim of this article is twofold. First, to show how Genoa tried to organize the Ligurian territory in the early years of the fourteenth century and how lordship was still widespread, even in areas under direct control of the city. Secondly, to demonstrate the importance of analyzing the persistence of these lordships, and the links between city and territory, which developed thanks to the presence – in both city and countryside – of important family confederacies, i.e. the Genoese alberghi, that constituted a veritable system. This article is based on two lists of places (1303-13), written for different purposes, that allow to map out the places (castellanie and podesterie) where the Genoese Commune exercised a recognizable control. Within the limits of the most easily accessible documents (the Genoese Libri Iurium), this contribution verifies the quality of the presence of both Commune and lords: the latter are detectable especially in relation to members of the Doria albergo. The invitation is to delve further into the Genoese notarial records, which while well-known remain an untapped documentary deposit.

The article introduces the collection of studies which focus on the management of family assets by women in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Liguria, a context with strong investigative potential thanks to the precocity, quantity and quality of extant sources. The co-authors have adopted four basic choices: firstly, to scrutinize attentively notarial registers; secondly to favour a qualitative rather than quantitative approach; thirdly, as far as possible, to consider of the entire region of Liguria; fourthly, to pay specific attention to the interrelationship between local law and practice, in both the short and the medium term.

The article examines seven petitions made to the Commune of Genoa by as many wives and their legal agents in 1297. The women were claiming immediate return of their dowries, since their spouses had been banished from the city during an outburst of violent factional conflict. Law and government ensured that the dotal fund was safeguarded allowing for a substantial reintegration and protection of property which ultimately benefitted the banished men themselves.

Non-dotal assets can be defined as those different kinds of goods which should be managed directly by married women. The extrados, an institution which was relatively unregulated and attested already in the second half of the twelfth century – much earlier than in other contexts –, can be found in practically all social classes and in the entire Ligurian area. The article examines the problem of recognizing these assets, their constitution, and management, and were often used for the purposes of family dynamics and social mobility. It concludes by discussing the transformation of the extrados, especially in the late thirteenth century, when these kinds of goods began to be assimilated partly to the Roman paraphernalia, and partly to the dowry, and thus started to fall under the husband’s control.
