This article seeks to reflect how a minority group takes advantage of new media, such as the videocassette recorder (VCR), to self-represent and identify. In particular, it follows the late Aloma (1948–2015), a middle-aged Greek transgender woman who, in the late 1980s, produced and directed three direct-to-video porn films. While foreign trans visibility at that same time was relatively small as well, this was the first time a transgender person and non-professional person in Greek media history was involved in the flowering local video circuit. Accordingly, this article argues that such an initiative broke older preconceptions of gender representation in the vernacular cultural industry of the time and that alternative pornography acted as an emancipative medium, providing positive trans images for various audiences.

Almost 50 years after the VCR's (Video Cassette Recorder) worldwide penetration in the international entertainment market, this paper will explore VCR-use-related and VCR-viewing-related activities, and the cultural practices of the Greek video cultures, particularly videotape collectors, in the 21st century. Rooted in various disciplines, the article aims to illuminate the persistent nature of VHS collectors' previous entertainment routines. From owning a VCR device and maintaining their videotape collections to enriching them with new acquisitions from video libraries and online buys, Greek videotape aficionados' practices show continuities and discontinuities from the past. Furthermore, it will explore how these practices have influenced their perception of current uses and gratifications of VHS technologies, revealing a perspective rooted in (tech) nostalgia. Moreover, the article will argue that the enduring presence and resilience of VHS technologies can be regarded as a testament to collective memory, a resistance to the digitalization of entertainment, and a longing for simpler ways of life, particularly in the aftermath of the 2007-2008 financial recession and the rise of new technologies.

Despite its slow and ambivalent transformation, particularly after WWII, Greek society strived to present a novel and relatively modern face during the 1960s. While tradition in all its facets had been a long-lasting staple, even affecting critical aspects of everyday life, modernity began to take steps and seek changes: peasants left the countryside to explore new opportunities in the urban centers, immigration rose, education emerged as a means to escape poverty, while technology penetrated the Greek household slowly. Such urban shifts have been particularly documented in the popular Greek films of the 1960s, providing a rich framework to explore the notions of tradition and modernity in visual folklore. By employing a qualitative approach, this article focuses on how Greek popular film reflects the critical tensions surrounding everyday urban life by examining customs, rituals, identities, and material culture as represented in particular film case studies. It will argue that the popular Greek film of the 1960s documents glimpses of tradition still surviving in the city and presents to the Greek audience ways of handling, preserving, or even rejecting tradition, while flirting with modernity.

Since the 1960s, the short-length Greek folklore documentary film
has focused on documenting folkloric expressions in social construction,
mores and customs, and folk art in Greek society. Shot in a rather eth-
noromantic vein and exhibited in local and international film festivals, it
incorporated original ethnographic fieldwork and recorded the last in-
stances of worlds in the process of cultural change in Greece after WWII
and the advent of industrialization and tourism. Its rise, coinciding with
the history and the developments in the field of Greek documentary film,
has triggered many negative allegiances expressed by film critics, includ-
ing folklorism, atavism, and naïveté. Drawing upon quantitative and
qualitative research, this article seeks to provide historical evidence on
the emergence of the Greek folklore documentary film, and it will explore
its formal evolution and ideological traits within three decades (1960-
1990). Through the close examination of specific case studies, it will be
argued that three different tensions surround the Greek folklore docu-
mentary film: its formative years as standardized by Nestoras Matsas, the
advent of the New Greek Cinema in the 1970s, and a self-reflection to
tradition in the 1980s until its assimilation into the Greek state television
after the 1990s.

Facing an unprecedented decline due to the advent of television in the 1970s, popular Greek cinema reinvented a new pathway to survive during such hard times. Flirting with foreign exploitation movies’ visual and narrative strategies, Greek erotica films became a new and quite lucrative outlet for the domestic market, as they were distributed worldwide. They employed dramatic or adventurous pretexts and a vibrant iconography, while a well-known Greek cast appeared in many of them. Despite unveiling rather sensual and progressive aspects of Greek society, these erotica films were conservative in the core, and they sometimes reproduced melodramatic narrative patterns. Nevertheless, there are some exceptions: films, such as To Koritsi kai to Alogo / Love on a Horse (Giorgos Serdaris, 1973) and Spiti stous Vrahous / House on the Rocks (Giorgos Zervoulakos, 1974) drew inspiration from Greek tragedy, more particularly from Euripides’s Hippolytus. With the latter as a case study, this article explores how Greek tragedy was adapted into Greek erotica movies and scrutinizes the continuities and deviations from the original tragic core. It will further examine how both Zervoulakos and Serdaris propose new plot forms, characters, representations of places, and aspects of erotic representation.

Notwithstanding their crucial role, among others, in constructing fanbased cultures, and addressing issues of authenticity, creativity, and identity, the birth, development and rise of the Greek fanzines have been rather sketchily documented. One could locate the first attempts at DIY publishing and fanzines after the fall of the 7-year-military-junta (1967-1973), and, more particularly, during the 1980s. However, it is in the 1990s that the Greek fanzines seem to come into the spotlight, thanks to the emergence and the diffusion of P/Cs, new points of distribution, and new Xerox amenities. This article seeks to explore a Greek instance of a girl-published cult film fanzine. By employing a qualitative approach and both primary and secondary sources, I will provide an autoethnographic account of my involvement in the Athens fanzine scene during the 2000s, when I published two fanzines that focused on foreign and Greek cult films. Interestingly, though, my venture was only known by very few friends, as I disclosed my complete identity, only leaving some hints that I could be a female cult film zinester.

Following the deregulation of the Greek television sector in 1989, as well as its influence on the production of new television series and serials during the next decade, television crime fiction appeared in the scheduling agenda of the newborn private stations. Tmima Ithon/Vice Squad (1992-1995, ΑΝΤ1) was an early example of such a trend, introducing a fresh perspective on how law enforcement and marginalized subjectivities could be represented onscreen. By examining the series’ place within the genre of television crime fiction along with its historical and social context, this article offers a space of reconsideration of the role and function of the genre in Greece. Furthermore, through quantitative and qualitative analysis, it explores the way social outcasts are represented, in relation to general perceptions of social categories and the rapidly shifting sociocultural environment of the 1990s, when postmodern forces were attempting a reconstruction of what was until then perceived as solid and stable.

Originating in the late 19th century, the airbrush spray gun was widely used in the mid-20th century as a photo retouch tool in advertising, while it contributed to the introduction of Photorealism in the early 1970s. The “LA scene” of the same decade popularized airbrush art through masterful illustrations. Using a variety of different representations, the 1980s airbrush art became the distinctive postmodern popular style of the decade, especially through the publication and distribution of posters and postcards, as well as in advertising. Although the 1990s saw its decline, in the late 2000s the 1980s airbrush art seems to be resurgent thanks to the Internet, providing an escapist narrative for the post-2007-2008 financial crisis landscape.

Religious fairs in Greece are well-known for their variety and diversity, as they encompass three different aspects (Vozikas 2009): the religious, the commercial and the entertaining ones. Usually, a Greek religious fair, held apropos the memory of a Saint of the Eastern Orthodox Church, combines religious sentiments, as well as financial activities with street vendors selling snacks, clothing and various goods, and, finally, entertaining opportunities for children and adults, i.e, free cooked food for the gathering and the staging of singing and dancing performances. Although this typology is quite standard in the rural and urban Greece, it is quite striking that small medieval, and almost defunct or abandoned churches in the industrial outskirts of Athens offer the opportunity to older communities to celebrate the memory of a religious person and also to give prominence to their locality. During my fieldwork at the districts situated at the former riverbeds of Kifissos river, which is the largest river flowing throughout the Attica plain and has now been enclosed since the late 1990s under tons of cement, I came across various private churches, which belonged to very old field proprietary-owners of the area. In their large, fertile-due to the Kifissos' water-and dense fields, they dedicated small churches to honor and protect their first-born daughters.

While the Greek film musical enjoyed popularity and commercial success in the 1960s, introducing new discourses on tradition, Greekness and modernity, it virtually disappeared from the Greek film charts in the next decade after the fast decline of the Greek popular cinema. During the 1980s, a period of major political, social and cultural changes, the Greek popular cinema and its genres began to regain popularity. Among the films of the era, some film musicals were released, and within the blossoming direct-to-video network older musical filmmakers re-emerged from oblivion. The purpose of this article is to explore the Greek film and VHS musicals of the 1980s on the basis of the bipolar axis of introversion/extroversion or modernism/postmodernism and to describe its various articulations in terms of form and content in the light of MTV and popular American film musicals.

Η πολυδιαφημισμένη λαγνεία για τη δεκαετία του 1980 επιβάλλει τη μέχρι προηγουμένως ξεπερασμένη ή καλύτερα ξεχασμένη λέξη βιντεοταινία. Με μια αχνή σύγχυση από τη νέα γενιά να περιπλέκει μορφές κι αισθητική, η "κασσέτα" εμφανίζεται ως ένα φτωχό, πλακατζίδικο και ίσως χοντροκομμένο κομμάτι του παρελθόντος, υπερήφανο να διεκδικεί μία θέση στην ελληνική δημοφιλή κουλτούρα του 21ου αιώνα. 29 χρόνια από την εμφάνισή της, η βιντεοταινία επαναφέρει τα ερωτήματα: ποιος, από πότε και γιατί;
