Modern Greek Folklore

The journal publishes scientific articles on the problems of the Greek language, literature and culture throughout their historical existence: from Ancient Greek and Byzantine literature, culture and language to the Modern Greek period. The papers cover a wide range of topics on history, literary criticism, linguistics, ethnolinguistics, folklore and post folklore of Greece, as well as on the reception of Greek images and ideas in Russia and Europe.

Legenda o Konštantínovi a Doruntine, populárna v Albánsku najmä románovým spracovaním Ismaila Kadareho, predstavuje významný prvok balkánskeho folkóru. Pôvod albánskeho mýtu však siaha k ranobyzantskému obdobiu k dielu "Pieseň mŕtveho brata", ktorá sa rozšírila po celom Balkáne. Dokonca aj mimo neho v rámci cyklu "mŕtveho milenca". Oba cykly tvoria súčasť spoločnej tématiky o návrate mŕtvych a sú spojené aj s vampirickou tradíciou v slovanských folkóroch.

Αφορμή για τη συγγραφή της παρούσας εργασίας αποτέλεσε η σχετικά διαδεδομένη εντύπωση ότι η έννοια του έρωτα δεν απαντά ως τέτοια στα τραγούδια του ελληνικού λαού. Ο έρωτας, θέμα δημοφιλές στη λόγια ποίηση από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι τις μέρες μας, θεωρείται από πολλούς ως έννοια ασύμβατη με το δημοτικό τραγούδι, που υποτίθεται ότι μιλά κυρίως για αγάπη και αγαπητικούς. Και τούτο, παρά το γεγονός ότι από τον 19ο αιώνα, τα σχετικά τραγούδια περιγράφονται σε κάποιες συλλογές ως «ερωτικά» . Η προσέγγιση που επιχειρείται εδώ είναι περισσότερο πραγματολογική, υπό την έννοια της παράθεσης και επεξεργασίας στατιστικών στοιχείων και ενδεικτικών παραδειγμάτων, που κρίθηκαν απαραίτητα για να φθάσει κανείς σε σχετικά ασφαλή συμπεράσματα. Η έννοια της αμεσότητας έχει εδώ διπλή διάσταση: από τη μία αναφέρεται στη μνεία της λέξης «έρωτας» και στα παράγωγά της (π.χ. ερωτικός) και από την άλλη, στην άμεση επίκληση του στιχουργού στον φτερωτό θεό (σε δεύτερο πρόσωπο). Από την επεξεργασία της διαθέσιμης ύλης προκύπτει ότι το πρώτο επίπεδο (της αδιαμεσολάβητης επικοινωνίας του στιχουργού με τον έρωτα) είναι πολύ πιο περιορισμένο απ’ ότι το δεύτερο (της περιγραφής των γεγονότων).

The reason for writing this work was the relatively widespread impression that the concept of eros does not appear as such in the songs of the Greek people. Eros, a theme popular in poetry from antiquity to the present day, is considered by many as a concept incompatible with folk song, which is supposed to refer mainly to love and the beloved. This happens, despite the fact that since the 19th century, the relevant songs are described in some collections as "erotic". The approach attempted here is pragmatistic, in the sense of quoting and processing statistical data and indicative examples, which were deemed necessary to reach relatively safe conclusions. The concept of immediacy has a double dimension here: on the one hand it refers to the mention of the word "eros" and its derivatives (e.g. erotic) and on the other hand, to the lyricist's direct invocation to the winged god (in the second person). The analysis of the available material shows that the first level (of the lyricist's direct communication with eros) is much more limited than the second (of the description of the events).

Il libro «Sentire la Grecia. In viaggio fra musiche e tradizioni» è un’introduzione al mondo della musica greca e ai suoi repertori, alle sue danze e ai suoi strumenti musicali, che non perde mai di vista quello che è il centro di gravità di tutte queste manifestazioni: la millenaria e affascinante cultura tradizionale della Grecia.
Un po’ diario di viaggio e un po’ autobiografia, un po’ antologia di canzoni e un po’ trattato musicale, il libro ha carattere divulgativo e la sua lettura è quindi adatta a tutti, sia a musicisti che ad appassionati filelleni che non hanno troppa dimestichezza coi tecnicismi musicali, che sono presentati di volta in volta in forma chiara e scorrevole.
Ogni capitolo è dedicato a una o più regioni e descrive, dopo una breve introduzione geografica e storica, gli strumenti e le formazioni musicali che vi si incontrano, illustra le caratteristiche della sua musica e passa in rassegna le canzoni e le danze più rappresentative, soffermandosi anche su usi e costumi locali che in qualche modo si legano alla tradizione musicale e coreutica della zona.

The paper refers to the Modern Greek folk beliefs connected with the moon which is supposed to influence human health
and routines and to “lunar magic” – various folk practices and rituals (usually timed to a particular lunar phase), which are performed with an intention to take advantage of the Moon’s strength and power.

Η εκκλησιαστική μουσική έχει καταστεί αντικείμενο της ελληνικής λαογραφίας από τη
δεκαετία του 1950 με την παρουσία του αείμνηστου πρωτοψάλτη Σπ. Περιστέρη ως μουσικού συντάκτη στο τότε Λαογραφικό Αρχείο (νυν Κέντρον Ερεύνης της Ελληνικής Λαογραφίας) της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών. Ο Περιστέρης περιήλθε πολλές περιοχές του ελλαδικού χώρου ηχογραφώντας εκατοντάδες εκκλησιαστικά μέλη στο πλαίσιο των εντεταλμένων λαογραφικών αποστολών του. Η προσπάθεια αυτή ατόνησε μετά την αποχώρησή του, αλλά το αίτημα της ηχογράφησης εκκλησιαστικής μουσικής από λαογράφους επανήλθε μετ’ επιτάσεως τα τελευταία χρόνια. Ο συγγραφέας έχει ήδη ηχογραφήσει μεγάλο αριθμό ιεροψαλτών από διάφορα μέρη της χώρας, οι οποίοι ανήκουν τόσο στους σπουδαγμένους όσο και στους πρακτικούς ιεροψάλτες. Η παρούσα ανακοίνωση επιχειρεί α) να κάνει μιαν αναδρομή στη σχέση εκκλησιαστικής μουσικής και ελληνικής λαογραφίας, β) να τονίσει τη σημασία της εκκλησιαστικής μουσικής για την επιστήμη της λαογραφίας και γ) να προσφέρει κάποια χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα ηχογραφήσεων από παλαιότερες αποστολές ερευνητών του ΚΕΕΛ. Θίγει επίσης κάποιες ιδιαίτερες πλευρές αυτή της σχέσης, όπως το είδος της μουσικής σημειογραφίας που πρέπει να χρησιμοποιείται στη μεταγραφή εκκλησιαστικών μελών.
Greek ecclesiastical music has been the object of Greek folklore during the first postwar decades of the 20th century, through the presence of the late Spyros Peristeris, a musical researcher in the then Folklore Archive (nowadays Hellenic Folklore Research Centre) of the Academy of Athens. Peristeris roamed many regions of the Hellenic countryside while recording hundreds of ecclesiastical melodies next to folk songs in the context of his commissioned musical folklore missions. This effort was left behind after his retirement but the demand for the recording and transcription of ecclesiastical music from folklorists returned with new intension in the past few years at the instigation of the last director of the Centre Dr. Aikaterini Polymerou-Kamilaki, under the supervision of the academician professor Stefanos Immelos. This author has already recorded a large number of cantors from various parts of continental and islander Greece, who belong both to educated and self-taught (empirical) cantors. Indeed, in his recent commissioned mission to Skiathos, he located a lot of charismatic cantors who preserve the so-calledi kollyvadic tradition that began from the monastic community of Mount Athos and passed through local intellectuals, such as Alexander Papadiamantis, Alexander Moraitidis and father Georgios Rigas. In this paper, the author attempts a) to offer a retrospection of the relation between ecclesiastical music and Greek folklore, b) to prove the value and necessity of studying ecclesiastical music from the perspective of folklore and c) to offer certain characteristic examples from older and recent missions by researchers of the Centre. He also throws light on certain aspects of this relation, such as the type of musical notation that can be used for the transcription of ecclesiastical melodies gathered from folklore missions, the contribution of self-taught cantors of the countryside to the creation and development of the ecclesiastical repertoire, and the methodology that should be followed during the process of collecting the material.

The research regarding the position of the woman, namely her roles as well as the perceptions about her, is continuous and is carried out in numerous societies around the world in relation to time and space. The purpose of the present paper is to demonstrate how the complexity of the role of the woman and her multifarious nature did not allow even the modern Greek folk poet to remain indifferent towards her. He glorified her and recognized her position within the Greek society as "a blessing and a curse" for her. The Greek folk song abounds in elements - formal (patterns, symbols, figures of speech) as well as elements related to content (archetypical forms of the mother, the wife, the mother-in-law etc.), which demonstrate in the most eloquent but at the same time plain way all this complexity of her role within the time frame of the Greek society before and during Liberation.

Η προκείμενη εργασία εκπονήθηκε στο μάθημα “Εισαγωγή στη Λαογραφία” του προπτυχιακού προγράμματος σπουδών του Τμήματος φιλολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών. Στόχος της είναι να παρουσιάσει πτυχές πνευματικού και υλικού πολιτισμού της Ερεσού,ενός χωριού της δυτικής Λέσβου.  Η μέθοδος που χρησιμοποιήθηκε ήταν ποιοτική ( πρωτογενές υλικό) και αρχειακή έρευνα. Όλες οι συνεντεύξεις συνδυάστηκαν με επιτόπια έρευνα.Το είδoς των συνεντεύξεων που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν ήταν οι κατευθυνόμενες, οι ημικατευθυνόμενες και οι ομάδες εστίασης. Μέσα από περίπου ογδόντα συνεντεύξεις ομιλητριών και ομιλητών διαφορετικών κοινωνικών τάξεων  σχηματίζεται ένα «κοινωνικό δίπολο»  με σκοπό να εντοπιστούν όλες οι πτυχές της κοινωνικής δομής του χωριού αλλά και το πώςτο κάθε άτομο αυτοπροσδιορίζεται μέσα σε αυτή.

Οι δοξασίες και οι πρακτικές των ταφικών τελετουργιών και εθίμων, καθώς και η πίστη των ανθρώπων σε μια μετά τον θάνατο ζωή, προσφέρουν εύφορο έδαφος για τη διεξαγωγή έρευνας σχετικής με την κοσμοαντίληψη της εκάστοτε κοινωνίας. Σύμφωνα με αυτές τις πεποιθήσεις, ο θά- νατος συνήθως εκλαμβάνεται εδαφικά, ενώ η γεωγραφική κατανομή του σύμπαντος γίνεται ανάμεσα στον Άνω κόσμο των ζωντανών και τον Κάτω κόσμο, την ζοφερή περιοχή των νεκρών ψυχών. Αυτή η γεωγραφική διαίρεση του Άλλου Κόσμου έχει υποβληθεί σε μια περαιτέρω, περίπλοκη και εκτενή χαρτογράφηση. Συνεπώς υφίσταται ένα άρτιο συγκρότημα που υπακούει στα χωρικά πρότυπα του κόσμου των ζωντανών, πλήρες ποταμών, λιμνών, πυλών, μονοπατιών και γεφυρών, το οποίο ο νεκρός υποχρεούται να διαβεί μετά τον θάνατο. Η προετοιμασία του νεκρού σώματος που προηγείται της κηδείας περιλαμβάνει μια σειρά πρακτικών και δοξασιών που συχνά αποσκοπεί στην προετοιμασία του αποθανόντα για το μακρύ ταξίδι και την παραμονή στο επέκεινα. Αντικείμενα όπως νομίσματα με τα οποία θα πληρώσει τα τελώνια και τα φορολόγα πνεύματα ή τον βαρκάρη του Κάτω Κόσμου, ειδικού συμβολισμού τρόφιμα και υγρά που θα αποτρέψουν την δίψα, την πείνα, την απώλεια μνήμης, ρούχα και υποδήματα, αποτελούν τα αναγκαία εφόδια με τα οποία ο νεκρός θα προσαρμοστεί στην μετά τον θάνατο τοπογραφία. Στη συγκεκριμένη μελέτη εξετάζονται οι λαϊκές πρακτικές και δοξασίες που άπτονται αυτής ακριβώς της προετοιμασίας για το ταξίδι του νεκρού στον Άλλο Κόσμο, η μορ- φολογία που διαμορφώνει αυτό το συγκεκριμένο σύνολο παραδόσεων, η προέλευσή τους, είτε χρι- στιανική είτε προχριστιανική, η σχέση πρακτικής-δοξασίας στο συγκεκριμένο πεδίο, ενώ αναδεικνύεται η πρωταρχική σημασία της τοπογραφίας του Άλλου Κόσμου στη διαμόρφωση των ταφικών εθίμων στην Ελλάδα και την Ανατολική-Νοτιοανατολική Ευρώπη γενικότερα.

Άρθρο για τη διαχρονική παρουσία του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου στους μύθους και τις παραδόσεις του λαού μας, από το αφιέρωμα στην «Κληρονομιά του Αλέξανδρου» του περιοδικού Άρδην (τ. 113, Αύγ.-Οκτ. 2018).

Ο μύθος του Αλέξανδρου είναι σταθερά παρών σε όλη την πορεία του ελληνισμού από την αρχαιότητα και το Βυζάντιο μέχρι την Τουρκοκρατία και το σύγχρονο ελληνικό κράτος. Ο βασιλιάς Αλέξανδρος της Παράδοσης δεν είναι ιστορικό πρόσωπο τόσο, όσο διαχρονική παρουσία. Δεν έχει ελαττώματα ούτε γνωρίζει όρια. Ο λαϊκός δημιουργός δεν κάνει Ιστορία, δεν γνωρίζει λεπτομερώς τα ιστορικά γεγονότα, ούτε τις χρονολογίες. Άλλωστε δεν είναι αυτός ο σκοπός του. Ο λαϊκός δημιουργός φτιάχνει Μύθο και μέσα στον Μύθο κλείνει την ουσία των ιστορικών γεγονότων, τα οποία μεταπλάθει και, έτσι, τα κρατά ζωντανά μέσα στον χρόνο. Ο Μύθος συγκροτεί ταυτότητα, γίνεται ταυτόχρονα ιστορία και μυθολογία και παράδοση και πολιτισμός.

Μια από τις σημαντικότερες επωδές με λειτουργία φυλαχτού της ανατολικής και νοτιοανατολικής ευρωπαϊκής λαϊκής παράδοσης είναι το Όνειρο της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου. Αν και το πλήθος των υπό μελέτη ελληνικών, ρωσι- κών ή βαλκανικών παραλλαγών είναι μεταγενέστερες, το κείμενο φαίνεται πως γνώρισε μεγάλη διάδοση στον χριστιανικό κόσμο από νωρίς, ενώ έγινε ιδιαίτερα γνωστό στον ελληνόφωνο χώρο με πλήθος παραλλαγών (μεταξύ άλλων από την Κρήτη, την Σάμο, την Μακεδονία, τον Πόντο, την Κύπρο). Σύμφωνα με την βασι- κή υπόθεση των διαφόρων παραλλαγών όπως αυτή εκτυλίσσεται στο κεντρικό και μακροσκελέστερο τμήμα του κειμένου, η Παναγία αποκοιμάται και ονειρεύεται πως ο Υιός της συλλαμβάνεται από τους Εβραίους, βασανίζεται, πεθαίνει και ανα- σταίνεται. Το κεντρικό τμήμα της εξιστόρησης διαδέχεται εκείνο στο οποίο ανα- δεικνύεται ο μαγικός χαρακτήρας, κυρίως φυλακτήριος, του κειμένου, το οποίο συνήθως ο επιτελεστής έφερε ως περίαπτο. Στη συγκεκριμένη μελέτη μελετώνται συγκριτικά οι συγκλίσεις και αποκλίσεις των ρωσικών, ελληνικών και βαλκανι- κών εκδοχών της εν λόγω historiola, η οποία όπως φαίνεται, μέσω του μυθικού περιστατικού της αφήγησης εξασφαλίζει στον επιτελεστή την σωτηρία της ψυχής του και μια ευνοϊκή μεταθανάτια κρίση.

Historically and culturally Agrafa can be regarded as a single region that occupies much of the current prefecture of Evrytania and part of the neighboring prefecture of Karditsa. In this paper will look at folk songs that have been recorded in the area of ​​Agrafa as a means for narrating history -local and national- and as an informal mechanism for the transmission of historical knowledge. For the purpose of this communication we will be using primarily unpublished material from the archives of the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre of the Academy of Athens and published sources.

This paper focuses on the figure of Alexander the Great in a set of Macedonian folk traditions circulating in Northern Greece in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Macedonian Alexander-folk traditions represent a peculiar set among the other Hellenic folk accounts, because they convey chiefly the idea of familiarity with the hero, who seems to be still living and influencing the people’s everyday life. This bond – almost a mutual ownership between Alexander and the Macedonians – is in fact constantly highlighted by the choice of the themes treated, such as the attribution of monuments to the great conqueror and the use of his historical and mythical persona to explain local customs, features of the landscape, or toponyms. Moreover, (pseudo-)aetiologies, etymologies, and/or descriptions of facts of local interest populate these narratives which, according to their content and purpose, are here grouped into two main categories, geographical and aetiological, and into two subcategories, geographico-aetiological and aetiologico-mythological. The aim here is confined to the discussion, the categorisation, and the translation into English of the Macedonian Alexander-traditions; I hope that this paper will make this notable and lively material accessible to a wider public and help the preservation of its memory.

The many unpublished papers by the Coan writer and folklorist
Iakovos Zarraftis, kept in the archives of the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge, are a real treasure-trove for anyone studying the popular culture of the Dodecanese at the beginning of the last century. In this article are published for the first time Zarraftis’ notes about the many spirits and supernatural beings feared by the inhabitants of Cos and Leros, and in particular devils, Nereids, vrykolakes, geloudes, nightmares, kalostratis, kallikantzaroi, Moires, witches and spirits guarding treasures.

This paper sheds light on the main mytho-poetic characteristics of the Sun image in Modern Greek riddles. Some of them could be traced back to the Antiquity, some of them are common with South Slavic and Balkan traditions, some of them supposedly present Modern Greek innovations.

The military operations conducted between Greeks and Turks in the town of Ayvalik (west coast of Asia Minor) and the surrounding area during the first days of June 1821 have led to the destruction of the city which was then abandoned by its surviving inhabitants, who initially fled to the island of Psara and from there to other areas of Greece. The destruction of Ayvalik was reflected in folk songs and oral traditions recorded from this region, but also in texts of local scholars, i.e. local historians and poets.
Through the comparative study of these sources will explore how the various narrations of this historic event have been structured –narrators, narrative modes, narrative patterns, dramatic elements, the different agents, their motivation and the qualities attributed to them, the different aspects of the narrated historic event that are being represented in each narration, etc. We then explore the dissemination of the above mentioned folk narrations through performance and, finally, the communicative framework in which the literary narrations were created: authors, historical context, ideological climate, potential recipients/readers. We thus try to ascertain if these individual narrations are different aspects of a larger narrative that affects the community member’s collective memory.

Η προπτυχιακή εργασία που ακολουθεί εξετάζει αν μέσα από την λογοτεχνική γραφή του μυθιστορήματος «κερένια κούκλα» ο Κωνσταντίνος Χρηστομάνος σκιαγραφεί την Αθήνα των αρχών του 20ού αιώνα και αν δίνει μία διαυγή εικόνα της πόλης και της ζωής της στο αναγνωστικό κοινό.
Η εργασία απαρτίζεται από επτά κεφάλαια. Αρχικά, γίνεται αναφορά στη ζωή του Κωνσταντίνου Χρηστομάνου, το γενικότερο έργο του και ιδιαίτερα στην ύστατη δημιουργία του το «αθηναϊκό μυθιστόρημα», όπως τιτλοφορεί ο ίδιος, «κερένια κούκλα». Στη συνέχεια, παρουσιάζεται ο τρόπος με τον οποίο διαγράφεται η Αθήνα στο εν λόγω λογοτεχνικό έργο με άξονα κάποιες χαρακτηριστικές κριτικές του. Ταυτόχρονα δίνεται η ιστορική και κοινωνική πραγματικότητα της Αθήνας εκείνης της περιόδου. Ακολουθούν πίνακες με τις άμεσες αναφορές του συγγραφέα σε τοπόσημα, βουνά, κτήρια, επαγγέλματα που πλέον έχουν εκλείψει και σε πολλά άλλα στοιχεία που αποτελούν χαρακτηριστικά της εποχής, για την οποία γίνεται λόγος. Έπειτα, σχολιάζεται η λαϊκή διασκέδαση στον αστικό χώρο της «παλιάς Αθήνας», με κέντρο του ενδιαφέροντος της έρευνας, το Αθηναϊκό καρναβάλι στην Πλάκα. Τέλος, εξετάζεται το ενδεχόμενο ύπαρξης θεατρικών στοιχείων στο μυθιστόρημα λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν την συμβολή του Κωνσταντίνου Χρηστομάνου στον χώρο του νεοελληνικού θεάτρου.

Abstract This paper is a field study, examining outdoor objects in situ. It aims, specifically, to promote a better understanding of the outdoor shrines referred to as 'proskynitaria', which are commonly encountered in Greece. These obscure objects have not only an artistic and religious significance, but reflect human ideas and memories which may have been lost in time but which are closely connected to a site. A recording system has been developed, in order to gather information with regard to the geographic, artistic and scientific characteristics of these unique objects. A case study was used in order to test the efficacy of the system. The data gathered on the physical condition of the 'proskynitaria' was evaluated in order to determine the causes of deterioration and any current or future risks assessed. Recommendations for preventive conservation were guided by traditional approaches to construction within the region.

"Is Ptochoprodromos a literary forefather of Karagiozis?" The paper analyses the piece of Greek shadow theatre by I. M. Chatzifotis called Karagiozis Ptochoprodromos. It shows the influences on it by the 12th century Byzantine collection of begging poems Ptochoprodromika and it deals with the parallels in the poetics of Ptochoprodromika and the Modern Greek shadow theatre. The different theories of Byzantine and even ancient Greek origins of Karagiozis and their failings are presented, too.

The book focuses on the figure of Charos (Χάρος, Χάροντας), widespread throughout the Hellenic world, including Cyprus and the Pontus region, and belonging to folk mythology of Modern Greece. The author, analyzing Greek demotic songs, especially mirologia (dirges) and the songs of the Underworld and Charos, but also alluding to acritic cycle of alleged Byzantine origin, sets out to ascertain plausible characteristics of this enigmatic and ambiguous personage.

The research required references to different historical levels of Greek history, including Ancient Greece and Byzantium. It was also indispensable to tap into some ethnographical accounts and especially to various literary texts featuring the figure of Charos, mainly ones from Crete and the islands that for centuries were under Western European influence. Moreover, folk tradition encompasses the coexistence of the earlier, archaic elements of pre-Christian tradition mingled with Christian ones belonging to the Orthodox Church and inherited from Byzantium. All of this makes every attempt at a holistic approach to the question of Charos extremely difficult and demands numerous intertextual and intercultural interferences.

Στα πρώτα χρόνια του 20ού αιώνα ο Νικόλαος Γ. Πολίτης δημοσίευσε την προφορική παράδοση των μισοτηγανισμένων ψαριών του Μπαλουκλί, καθιστώντας τη δομικό στοιχείο της ελληνικής εθνικής ιδεολογίας. Έναν περίπου αιώνα αργότερα ο εγγονός του, Αλέξης Πολίτης προσέγγισε κριτικά τον ίδιο θρύλο, και δι’ αυτού την σύστοιχη μυθολογία, διερευνώντας τις σχέσεις της τελευταίας με την εθνική ιδεολογία. Το άρθρο αυτό συνδιαλέγεται κριτικά με τις διαπιστώσεις του Αλέξη Πολίτη. Από τα πορίσματα του το άρθρο κρατάει την έννοια της «διαπερατότητας» των παραδόσεων διαφορετικών ανθρώπινων κοινοτήτων, ιδιαίτερα δε στην περίπτωση που οι παραδόσεις αυτές είναι προφορικές. Γεγονός είναι όμως ότι η νοηματοδότηση των επίκοινων πολιτισμικών στοιχείων και χαρακτηριστικών αλλάζει σε σχέση με τις κοινωνικές, οικονομικές, πολιτικές και πολιτισμικές ανάγκες της κάθε κοινότητας: νικητές και κατακτημένοι δεν έχουν τις ίδιες ανάγκες. Μέσα από το πρίσμα αυτό και επί τη βάσει νέου τεκμηριωτικού υλικού το άρθρο διερευνά τον θρύλο του Μπαλουκλί υποστηρίζοντας ότι δεν αποτελεί μια «εθνικής έμπνευσης» νεωτερική κατασκευή αλλά έναν προ-νεωτερικό μύθο συνδεδεμένο με τον προφητισμό είτε της κυρίαρχης (μουσουλμανικής) είτε της υπόδουλης (χριστιανικής) κοινότητας και τα διαφορετικά, πολιτικού χαρακτήρα, διακυβεύματα που η κάθε περίπτωση συνεπαγόταν.

Κύκλος πέντε εισηγήσεων για το δημοτικό τραγούδι στο Ίδρυμα Γουλανδρή-Χορν, το 1985, που περιλαμβάνονται στον δωδέκατο τόμο των Απάντων του Χ. Μαλεβίτση (εκδόσεις Αρμός, 2010). Εδώ δημοσιεύουμε τις πρώτες δύο εισηγήσεις, με τίτλο «Η συλλογή των δημοτικών τραγουδιών» και «Τραγική και παραδεισιακή αίσθηση της ζωής» (σ. 143-183).
