One year's collections of YouTube peliculas and novelas available online in Spanish ...I use them as a resource for learning Spanish. You can do anything you want with them. All resources are hyperlinked for quick ongoing access. I also transcribed some of the movies verbatim to check my oral comprehension. These sections are offered here in brown text to distinguish them from other peoples' comments... Enjoy!

cine de YouTube para explorar la justicia…el amor, la revancha, guerra, y más…with links to Pope Francis Fratelli tutti on final pages and special thanks to MLK and RBG...intended for SPAN2041 reading class University of Wyoming, but welcome all. This collection of peliculas and links offers a wide selection of cultural and literary approaches to various tense situations where people convert themselves into heroes over moral infractions. Links to romance included, of course. It's surprising how a vague focus on this theme, produces a large list of movies and novels and how these can bring up philosophical and religious debates of all types (also online). This is the most focused collection of "recursos" I've ever produced. hope you enjoy it as much as I have. PEACE (with justice of course).

This ethnographic reflection foregrounds the efforts a K-12 Englishmedium (EM) school in Kolkata is making to pull EM schooling more fully into India's multilingual ethos. By focusing on the special needs of a small group of struggling working-class girls, the successes of the majority of working-class students at this school become more visible. Through a description of the activities emerging from an experimental "remedial" classroom, I imagine a curriculum designed especially for first-generation English learners. Although such adaptations would be more complicated to implement officially, my intent is to highlight the potential EM schooling has to better address the needs of a country whose majority is still chronically undereducated. For English to become truly Indian, students of all types need to be freer to use it creatively. As a guest teacher from the U.S.A., I recount some tentative moves in this direction, made possible by the special environment at this sc...

This thesis experiments with hyperlinked code-switching into Spanish to resolve last minute editing questions focused on word choice. While simultaneously reflecting on an ethnographic sketch I published earlier and republished here, I deepen the meaning of various phrasal verbs by translanguaging into Spanish to reference comments made by translators who are also discussing the meaning of these phrases.
Turns out that these reflections on "word choice" gradually become a major focus of the thesis, reinforcing the meaning of a key quote by Yeats used in TESOL/AL to make visible a deeper theory question linked to the uniqueness of individual speakers. However, there are two incongruent interpretations of this quote "how can we know the dancer from the dance?": one by Kramsch defending individual uniqueness and the other claiming otherwise.
My thesis ends up proving (on two levels simultaneously) the uniqueness of each of us as an emergent capacity to language that transcends the ways that words constrain us. Despite the clarity norms provide at any one point, meaning remains dialogic, emerging only gradually through the complexity of our lives. How we use language is unique, building into thick multidimensional discussions that afford each person a special place in the whole that is emerging. This is most especially true for those who travel in more than one language... no matter who briefly or covertly.

This one page document reprints a TESOL Caucus newsletter essay published by Yanjon in 2005 along with a much-delayed teacher's explanation of the context that gave rise to it. I wish to highlight the cooperative process we used to generate and analyze our emergent transcultured identities. By definition, transcultural identities are collaborative projects, thought not always deliberately named as such. In a future publication I will publish the TCAB writing prompt we built together that allowed us to realize our shared TC identities.

Explains how to use "transcultural autobiography" in the context of an advanced ESL writing class. Starting with a sample essay that I wrote about my grandfather, the students work in parallel to produce similar essays using the same multi-generational "flashback" structure. Time is given in class for discussion about the transcultural nature of autobiographies that document the experience of crossing national and ethnic boundaries.

This book explores the role of language and discourse plays in the construction of official narratives that frame HIV/AIDS education, prevention and treatment efforts. Using a wide range of qualitative methodologies, these case studies highlight the importance of local (unofficial) knowledges embedded in a wide range of settings, documenting how these knowledges fail to surface in most cases. It then contrasts these with an effective local response to the crisis, giving readers a profound and nuanced view of the subtle ways that AIDs gets spread. Applied linguistics doesn't get better than this.

How to learn Spanish online by studying emerging content area academic topics. I outline techniques for identifying scholarly topics that emerge while watching YouTube movies. Two years after engaging a local Minnesota audience, this pedagogy for learning Spanish across the curriculum was received by an International audience of CLAC scholars.
An afterward was added with further projects outlined that identify a general tradeoff between language use and acquisition. Too much focus on acquisition inhibits the reception of authentic culture. Need to let go of control and just go with what emerges!
