the conjunction of semiotics as the philosophy of signs and signification, with spirituality as the attitude and practice of natural sensibility and the divine, con- stitutes our general field in which to reason about self–portraiture. The article starts with a philosophical excursus underlying the elaboration of thematic relevance and, hinting at the autobiographical genre as a narrative structure of reference, explores self–portrait composition in order to understand its proper function. In addition to pointing out proximities with and divergences from the selfie, we also examine the origins and affiliations of the macrocategory of the portrait, which began as contraf- fatto al vivo. Spiritual semantics runs through the central part, which is followed by a visual analysis of some case studies, modern art paintings and contemporary photo- graphs. We conclude by establishing connections with expert authors, recapitulating the path we have travelled and invoking new epistemic and pragmatic glimpses.

In order to study chronotopes, in addition to incorporating and arguing collective and individual erratic landscapes, it is necessary to take into account forces of a physical nature, those events that materially and significantly regulate physicality on which we then experience meaning and formulate interpretations. We therefore discern different types of timing and counting of time: the time of objects and bodies in space is first and foremost, the time of their movements, of their relationships, but also the time attributed to them through our gaze that focuses and pays attention by capturing their mechanism. We immerse ourselves in the length, width and depth of the infinite lines that regulate space and recognize in the mutual positioning one of the most urgent axiological characters to be investigated; we study matter and its attributes, observing and intervening in it. We will attempt this through the semiotics implied by artistic and specifically theatrical (multimedia) language, by creating, analyzing and staging the dramaturgy entitled “Face of ash and sound”.

We focus our research on the language of photography through the visual and conceptual contributions of Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. The theoretical considerations, mostly linked to visual semiotics and the semiotics of the body, intersect with studies on the rostrosphere and the philosophy of the face relevant to this volume. The images in the article illustrate representative aspects of Mexico and Latin America from a critical and creative vision where the decolonial substratum dialogues with a hybrid and syncretic contemporaneity.

We consider breath as a vast prospect that includes actions and traces of them, that builds images and texts, that involves the human being and the extra-human context; we call this great scenery ‘breathscape’. We then study how breathscape interacts with the human apparatus of the face, both giving rise to signs, but also giving rise to a liminal zone of extremely intriguing interpretative processes on a mereological scale. How and where do the territory of breath and the body interact? Which processes of signification do they give rise to? And which signs are created in their phenomenal and semantic encounter? Art is certainly the most appropriate language for studying this process, as well as for letting opacities emerge and exploring outstanding contrasts. There are various concepts of ‘breathscape’ that, grounded in different cultures, are immediately associated with ancient and contemporary philosophies. As a reverberation from a semiotic interaction and through the discretiza...

Vitacora , a neologism that comes from the French (bitacle), is a platform of individual or collective creative writing that can record the process of change from below. It is both a process and technic...

Drawing on research conducted within the ERC Consolidator Project FACETS, this presentation aims at describing the state of art of solutions currently offered by AI for coping with loss of memory and identity in the pandemic scenario and at discussing advantages and disadvantages of these digital tools. On the one side, the presentation will focus on how the interpersonal physical distance imposed because of the risk of contagion might be dealt with by applications based on Artificial Intelligence purposed to mitigate the loss of memory in elderly people by building new bridges between them and the generation of digital natives. On the other side, the paper will concentrate on obstacles that hamper the adoption of Artificial Intelligence across the generations. Lack in digital literacy as well as inappropriate interaction design as obstacles to effective cooperation between humans and artificial intelligence will be particularly stressed. Finally, the presentation aims at presenting ...
