Abstract · The Bibie in the history of pastoral and liturgical use of the friulian language · On February 1, 2019 the new edition of the translation of the Holy Scripture in the Friulian language, La Bibie, published by the Pio Paschini Institute for the History of the Church in Friuli on behalf of the dioceses of Udine, Gorizia and Concordia-Prodenone was officially presented in Udine. At the presentation, attended by numerous authorities and a large audience, Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, spoke with a report entitled: The mother’s voice. The ecclesial reasons of the Bible in the Friulian language. On that same occasion, the contribution now published was also read, which aims to outline the historical path within which the new edition of La Bibie is placed.

Dal tardo medioevo fino al Seicento, un "viaggio" piuttosto insolito alle origini della "grappa", la tipica acquavite di vinaccia prodotta in Friuli, distillato un tempo ben più noto in lingua friulana con l'accattivante e ormai desueto nome di "petes".

Almeno dal XIV secolo in Friuli i documenti lasciano trapelare le prime testimonianze di viti disposte in piantate 'a filare' sostenute da alberi e intervallate da superfici più o meno vaste seminate in vario modo, innanzitutto a frumento. Ma è nel Quattrocento che venne meno definitivamente la vecchia separazione netta tra vigne e altre piantagioni, in favore di una maggior promiscuità colturale: diversi scritti parlano infatti di terreni 'piantati' «vitibus et arboribus», o «tam in vineis quam sine vineis», taluni descrivono «li campi de vignis», altri ricordano la necessità di «impiantar e remendar ... de arbori e de vidy» e così via...

This old brief research aimed to place the parish church of San Martino in Rive d'Arcano in a first and partial reconstruction of the architectural culture of the Friuli in the twelfth century, placing it in relation with other similar buildings [for an update about the church of San Odorico al Tagliamento see above the paper "Provenienza e uso di pietra dolomitica nell’architettura medievale del Friuli" (2005)].

Establishing the origin and dating of the palatalization of the CA and GA clusters in the Rhaeto-Romance languages and in the Cisalpine area is one of the most debated problems in Romance linguistics, also because of the classificatory implications ascribed to this phonetic mutation. In 1958 the Slovene romanist Anton Grad suggested a ‘low’ dating (XII-XIV centuries) for such palatalization in Friulian, on the basis of the loan words present in western Slovene dialects. However, on the basis of toponomastic data and other interlinguistic considerations, it is possible to predate the palatalization of the CA and GA in the Friulian area before the year 1000.

Some documents from the Friuli area, dating back to 1336, attesting the use of firearms in Venzone and the preparation of black powder, were quickly forgotten immediately after their publication, not finding feedback, even today, even in local publications.
Their rediscovery and contextualization, considered also the recent discoveries on the subject occurred for the neighboring Veneto area, confirms their importance for the history of the hoplology offering a more secure and documented datum of the famous quotation referring to the year 1331 reported in the Chronicle of Cividale («ballistabant cum sclopo versus terram») whose oldest specimens, as known, do not go beyond the XV century.

Alcuni documenti di ambito friulano attestanti l’uso di armi da fuoco a Venzone e la preparazione della polvere nera risalenti al 1336, furono rapidamente dimenticati subito dopo la loro pubblicazione, non trovando, a tutt’oggi, riscontro neppure nelle pubblicazioni di argomento locale.
La loro riscoperta e contestualizzazione, alla luce anche dei risultati avuti dalle recenti indagini sull’argomento avvenute per la confinante area veneta, conferma la loro importanza per la storia dell’oplologia offrendo un dato più sicuro e documentato della famosa citazione riferita all’anno 1331 riportata nella Cronaca di Cividale («ballistabant cum sclopo versus terram») che, come noto da tempo, è giunta solamente in copie del secolo XV.

Tra  vecchi  nazionalismi,  difficoltà  socioeconomiche  e  problemi istituzionali, il processo di integrazione europea si trova in un prolungato momento di grande difficoltà. Nelle rinnovate istanze di autogoverno di quelle che un tempo erano chiamate «nazioni proibite» si colgono segnali interessanti  che  rilanciano  proprio  l’Europa  «unita  nella  diversità». 
In questo  contesto  si  colloca  il  caso  friulano,  caratterizzato  oggi  come  in passato  dall’intreccio  tra  rivendicazioni  culturali  e  politiche  e  da significative connessioni tra le une e le altre e la dimensione europea, di cui si propone  un  sintetico  profilo,  tra  storia  e  attualità  e  tra  elaborazioni teoriche e esperienze di organizzazione e mobilitazione.

L’articolo prende in considerazione un gruppo di documenti, compresi nel fondo archivistico dei Conventi soppressi attualmente conservato all’Archivio di Stato di Pordenone, che riguardano il convento di San Francesco di Pordenone. Nei circa duecento documenti, che vanno dal 1448 agli inizi del XVIII secolo, si possono rintracciare numerose informazioni su fatti, luoghi e soprattutto persone di Pordenone, ma anche di vari paesi del circondario. Nel contributo sono presi in particolare considerazione i diversi mestieri, le attività economiche e la provenienza delle persone menzionate, spesso originarie di zone anche lontane, nonché l’antroponimia e la toponimia.
Interessanti risultano alcune notizie che riguardano medici, docenti, letterati e artisti. Fra di esse, spicca un documento del 1506 nel quale è citato come testimone di un atto notarile il famoso pittore Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis, ossia il Pordenone.

This article focuses on a series of documents on San Francesco friary which are found in the Abolished Friaries section of the State Archive in Pordenone. The documents, totalling around two-hundred, date back to between 1448 and the beginning of the 18th century, and provide precious information on events, locations and – most importantly – people connected to the town of Pordenone as well as other towns and villages nearby. Different professions and business activities have been analyzed, along with the origins of the people mentioned, some of them coming also from distant regions, as well as names of people and places.
Some data concerning doctors, teachers and men of letters and arts prove to be particularly interesting. In a document dating back to 1506, the famous painter Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis, better known as Il Pordenone, is mentioned as a witness to a deed of sale.

Il friulano Cristano Ridomi (Udine 1904 – Gardone Riviera 1969) è stato una figura polivalente e di spicco già negli anni Trenta e poi nel secondo dopoguerra, a cavallo tra il mondo della cultura e quello della diplomazia e della politica: giovanissimo giornalista del Corriere della Sera e corrispondente da Berlino durante l’ascesa di Hitler, poi, terminato il conflitto, direttore di un giornale, Capo ufficio stampa del Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri Alcide De Gasperi, Presidente della Rai dal 1951 al 1954 (inaugurò fra l’altro le prime trasmissioni televisive) e autore di alcuni libri da una parte, diplomatico di carriera in Austria e in Germania e candidato non eletto al Senato (1958) dall’altra. Il presente contributo, oltre a tracciarne un’ampia biografia, analizza le curiose scelte onomastiche operate nel suo unico romanzo, Avventura ’43 (1966), largamente autobiografico.

Friulian-born Cristano Ridomi (Udine, 1904 – Gardone Riviera, 1969) was a prominent and versatile personality active in the fields of media, diplomacy and politics from the 1930s until the 1960s. A young journalist for Corriere della Sera, Ridomi became the newspaper’s correspondent in Berlin, where he witnessed Hitler’s rise to power. After WWII, he became a newspaper editor, chief press officer for Italian PM Alcide De Gasperi, chairman of national public broadcasting company RAI from 1951 to 1954 (he launched the first television broadcast) and authored a number of books. In addition to his achievements in the media, he pursued a career as a diplomat in Austria and Germany and also ran unsuccessfully for the Italian Senate (1958). This paper outlines Ridomi’s life with a focus on the unusual names he used in his only novel, the largely autobiographical Avventura ’43 (1966).

Vengono ripercorsi la carriera accademica e l'itinerario degli studi medioevali di Flavia De Vitt, in occasione della conclusione del suo rapporto di lavoro con l'Università degli Studi di Udine. Se ne sottolinea la grande coerenza e la solidità scientifica, che ne fanno un punto di riferimento per la storia della chiesa e della religiosità del Friuli medioevale.

The essay go back over the events of the medieval wooden crucifix now housed in the cathedral of Cividale del Friuli (Udine). It was recently restored by the Superintendence for the historical, artistic and ethno-anthropological of Friuli Venezia Giulia and it was the "fulcrum" of the exhibition held at the National Museum of Palazzo de Nordis in Cividale del Friuli, from 12 July to 12 October 2014. This paper was posted in the exhibition catalog, edited by Luca Mor. It provides a concise but enough complete and updated overview of the historical events of that gigantic Romanesque statue through photographic, literary, devotional and archival documents (the last ones dates back to 1276).

Il saggio ripercorre a ritroso le vicende del Crocifisso ligneo medievale oggi conservato nel duomo di Cividale del Friuli (Udine), recentemente restaurato dalla Soprintendenza per i Beni storici, artistici ed etnoantropologici del Friuli Venezia Giulia e “perno” della mostra tenutasi al Museo Nazionale di Palazzo de Nordis, in Cividale del Friuli, dal 12 luglio al 12 ottobre 2014. Inserito nel catalogo della mostra, a cura di Luca Mor, il saggio offre una panoramica sintetica ma sufficientemente completa e aggiornata delle vicende storiche del monumentale simulacro romanico attraverso la documentazione fotografica, letteraria, devozionale e archivistica, quest’ultima risalente fino al 1276.

Three new socketed axes from the plain near Tagliamento river (Friuli, Italy), Ha B1 (X century BC)
The land around San Vito al Tagliamento has been well-known for more than half a century for the abundance
of the outcrops of materials of recent prehistory and protohistory, with a marked rarefaction in the Iron age.
The findings presented here – three socketed axes –, which are the result of occasional retrieval by volunteers,
cast a new light on a still poorly known period for this area on the Right Bank of Tagliamento River, the Final
Bronze Age (XII-X cent. BC). These finds are a testimony to the importance of the contribution of volunteers
in the recovery and preservation of the traces of the past.

(Double surnames from the Aviano and Pordenone area) The present paper investigates the double surnames commonly found in three municipalities in the province of Pordenone: Frisanco, Maniago, and Aviano, on which a special focus is laid. Double surnames are a branch of research relatively new to scholars of onomastics. At an unspecified time – possibly after Friuli became part of Italy in 1866 – some family nicknames have been juxtaposed to surnames in official writing. No regular pattern can be identified, hence the presence within these communities of simple and compound surnames, the latter being sometimes hyphenated.

Nella prima parte, l'articolo offre alcune riflessioni sui modi con cui Ariosto, nelle sue Rime, fa interagire modello petrarchista e modello classico, con particolare riferimento al rapporto amore-ragione, al ruolo della «fede» amorosa, alla rappresentazione di Amore e della donna amata, alla componente sensuale. L'autore si sofferma fra l'altro su un'interessante riscrittura del capitolo ariostesco della notte d'amore, ad opera del poeta udinese Pietro Arrigoni (ca. 1525-1571). La seconda e la terza parte del contributo analizzano come Ariosto riprende il sistema concettuale e topico del codice petrarchista, enfatizzandone significativamente certe potenzialità piuttosto che altre o instillando nuova linfa espressiva in topoi ormai abusati. Nell'articolo è costante il confronto con la codificazione della teoria amorosa rinvenibile nella trattatistica cinquecentesca.


In the first part, the article offers some observations on how Ariosto, in his Poems, makes the classical model interact with the petrarchist model, with special reference to the relationship love-reason, the role of «faith» in love, the representation of Love and of the beloved woman, the sensual component. Among other things, the author dwells upon an interesting rewriting of the Capitolo of the love night, by the udinese poet Pietro Arrigoni (ca. 1525-1571). The second and the third part of the article analyze how Ariosto develops the conceptual and topical system of the petrarchist code, by stressing some potentialities instead of other ones or by instilling some new expressive lifeblood into hackneyed topoi. In the article, there are frequent comparisons with the love theory codification in the Renaissance treatises.

summary – neolithic and eneolithic of caput adriae – the eastern adriatic coast and the caput adriae lie along one of the main routes of the spread of farming into europe. the area in this study covers dalmatia, istria, Karst and friuli which present varied environmental and geomorphological features. recent research has disclosed a complex archaeological picture of neolithic communities well adapted to different local environments. this area is also significant for the understanding of contacts and interactions between the mediterranean world and the continental regions during the development of the neolithic period and in the subsequent prehistoric phases. nevertheless, only dalmatia offers long relatively detailed pottery sequences suitable for building a reliable cultural and chronological framework of the neolithic in several phases between 6000 and ca. 4000 bc. full neolithic evidence is attested to only occasionally in the istria and Karst regions, while it is widespread in the western margin of friulian plain. eneolithic evidence instead is not yet fully attested; its recognition rests almost entirely on certain stylistic traits of pottery and the first appearance of copper objects as isolated artefacts. the paper presents an outline of the emergence of neolithic communities and their economic and social transformations between the sixth and third millennium bc.
riassunto – neolitico ed eneolitico del caput adriae – la costa orientale dell’adriatico e il Caput Adriae sono situati lungo una delle vie principali seguite dal processo di neolitizzazione in europa. l’area esaminata comprende la dalmazia, l’istria, il carso e il friuli che presentano caratteristiche ambientali e geomorfologiche differenti. le ricerche effettuate negli ultimi anni hanno svelato un quadro archeologico complesso costituito da numerose communità neolitiche con sistemi di sussistenza diversificati ben adattati ai differenti ambienti locali. l’area considerata è inoltre di grande interesse per la comprensione dei contatti e delle interazioni intercorse tra il mondo mediterraneo e le regioni più interne nel corso del neolitico e nelle successive fasi preistoriche; tuttavia, solo la dalmazia ha delle sequenze ceramiche relativamente dettagliate che forniscono un quadro cronologico e culturale affidabile delle diverse fasi neolitiche tra il 6000 e il 4000 circa a.c. le evidenze del pieno neolitico sono occasionalmente attestate in istria e nel carso, mentre sono meglio note nelle zone più occidentali del friuli. l’eneolitico non è ancora ben definito ed è conosciuto solo da alcune evidenze ceramiche e dalla comparsa occasionale dei primi manufatti di rame. l’articolo delinea lo sviluppo delle comunità agricole nel corso del neolitico e le loro trasformazioni economiche e sociali tra il vi e il iii millennio a.c.

Fare la storia di Marsure in età moderna è un po' come dover descrivere un'immagine avendone presenti solo alcune minime porzioni. Abbiamo infatti sottomano solo alcune tessere di un puzzle sterminato, quelle che il caso capriccioso e la ricerca svolta, ovviamente a campione, hanno messo alla fine a disposizione; e con queste tessere sparse tentare di ricostruire un quadro generale il più possibile corretto, rispondente al vero. Ecco dunque perché si è voluto sottotitolare questo contributo come "flash archivistici", quasi come se fossero degli improvvisi e rapidi lampi di luce che illuminano soltanto alcuni aspetti del passato.

Dante è considerato il padre della letteratura italiana. In che modo hanno guardato a lui i friulani, così fieri della propria cultura e della propria lingua? Questo volume prova a rispondere alla domanda esaminando gli episodi più significativi della fortuna del poeta in Friuli a partire dall’Ottocento risorgimentale. Ne deriva un percorso ricco di stimoli, che spazia dalla leggenda del soggiorno di Dante in Friuli a un discorso che lo addita a modello di morale e di lingua per la gioventù, passando poi dalle celebrazioni del 1865 e del 1921 alle traduzioni in friulano della Commedia, per giungere sino alla fantasmagorica rivisitazione del poema ad opera del pittore Anzil, in dialogo con lo scrittore Carlo Sgorlon.

The death of Rizzardo VI da Camino (+1335), marks a significant turning point, not only for the history of Cenedese or Veneto.
Without a male descent, a long litigation followed between the Rizzardo VII brothers and Gherardo V da Camino, distant cousins of the deceased and lawful heirs, the Dalla Scala, the Patriarch of Aquieleia and, above all, Venice and the bishop of Ceneda. The two Da Camino instructed a trial among Roman Court, suing Francesco Ramponi, bishop of Ceneda, who, through false deeds, tried to get the properties of the late Rizzardo VI to be recognized.
The details of the intricate affair, after the meticulous and still very wise essay by Gerolamo Biscaro, were considered by now all to be known. In truth, a document of fundamental importance for the trial held at the Roman Court was found: the sentence of the papal delegate Nordio da Grava, abbot of Follina, who, as the subsequent documentation shows, was totally ignored.
The motivations that led to this, and ultimately to the "victory" of the Bishop and the Republic, are the object of the investigation of this article.

La morte di Rizzardo VI da Camino (+1335) segna un punto di svolta notevole, di interesse non solo per la storia del Cenedese o del Veneto.
Privo di discendenza maschile, alla sua dipartita seguì un lungo contenzioso tra i fratelli Rizzardo VII e Gherardo V da Camino, lontani cugini del defunto e legittimi eredi, gli Scaligeri, il Patriarca di Aquieleia e, soprattutto, Venezia ed il Vescovo di Ceneda. I due fratelli Caminesi istruirono un processo presso il Papa, citando in giudizio Francesco Ramponi, vescovo di Ceneda il quale, con atti falsi, cercò di farsi riconoscere la proprietà dei beni del defunto Rizzardo VI.
I particolari dell'intricata vicenda, dopo il minuzioso ed ancor validissimo saggio di Gerolamo Biscaro, si ritenevano ormai tutti noti. In realtà è stato ritrovato un documento di fondamentale importanza nello svolgimento del processo tenutosi presso la Corte Romana: la sentenza del delegato papale Nordio da Grava, abate della Follina la quale, come dimostra la documentazione successiva, fu inverità totalmente ignorata.
Le motivazioni che portarono a questo, ed in ultima analisi alla “vittoria” del Vescovo e della Repubblica, sono oggetto dell’indagine del presente articolo.

This project refers to the 2020 EU strategy on "sustainable growth", on the AXIS 3-Environmental and cultural heritage, with Priority 6c-Conservation, protection, promotion and development of natural and cultural heritage and specific objectives 3.1-Increase the development of the natural heritage and cultural heritage of the area in sustainable tourism destinations. The project involves the enhancement (conservation, protection, promotion and development of natural and cultural heritage) of specific territorial situations, inside the Tenth Region of the ancient Roman Augustan era (the so-called REGIO X). In 1772 the Venetian Senate intervened by passing a law to limit the exorbitant number of religious feasts that were happening in many places throughout the dominio da terra (the mainland) and Istria. Information collected in the 1770s is above all interesting as it formed a true and detailed ethnographic research of religious feasts, rich in descriptions pertinent to the cult of saints and the spreading of religious feasts in the mainland and  Istria. Entrusted to a preliminary enquiry by parish priests, these descriptions, far from being uniform and provided with precision  offer a colourful frame of popular religiosity and of the difficulties, if not impossibility, of tracing a homogeneous framework of the world of customs which, with its cultural traits, still intensely pervaded religious life of subject populations. The  title Ambiguous Descriptions  reflects therefore  the  fact  that the information collected by parish priests could hardly provide an adequate answer to the questions formulated by an act which was built on a prospective that was decisively foreign to the world of customs and its numerous aspects.

Testo trascurato dagli studi camilliani è il passo in cui Erasmo da Valvasone celebra i poeti friulani all'interno del suo volgarizzamento della Tebaide di Stazio. Jacopo di Porcia e Giulio Camillo sono gli unici tra i letterati citati ad appartenere a generazioni precedenti: ciò rivela la volontà di farne punti di riferimento. Il ruolo di guida del Camillo è esplicitamente evidenziato tramite le parole «a tutti gli altri avanti». Scrivendo che il Delminio «compartì suo’ bei secreti nosco», Erasmo lascia trapelare l'orgoglio di appartenere ad un'élite di priviIegiati particolarmente vicina al Maestro, tanto da poter probabilmente accedere ai suoi «secreti» retorici, oltre che di tipo mistico-sapienziale. Il passo presentato fa il paio con la più nota lettera attraverso cui Tommaso Porcacchi dedica al Valvasone l'opera completa del Camillo. L'interesse nei confronti di quest'ultimo è condiviso dalla cerchia di letterati con cui Erasmo è a più stretto contatto (si pensi ad esempio a Cornelio Frangipane e ai fratelli Luigini).
