How anti-Palestinian racism differs from Islamophobia
While it’s often conflated with Islamophobia, the two forms of discrimination are distinct: Islamophobia targets people for being Muslim and their religious beliefs, while the other targets people because of their Palestinian identity or because they support Palestinian rights. Anti-Palestinian racism focuses specifically on Palestinians’ culture, heritage, and their movements for liberation, often manifesting through suppressing speech and activism related to the Palestinian cause.
To be clear, anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia have similar roots and can have a vicious feedback loop. The dehumanization of Palestinians as barbaric, primitive, or terroristic, for example, perpetuates racist tropes about not just Arabs but also about Muslims more broadly. And the depiction of Islam as an inherently violent religion — one that’s incompatible with the West — feeds into the idea that Palestinians, who are predominantly Muslim, aren’t capable of pursuing peace.

Israel has been explicit about what it's carrying out in Gaza. Why isn't the world listening? Palestinians look for survivors after an Israeli airstrike in Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip on October 12th, 2023. AP Photo/Hatem Ali ON FRIDAY, Israel ordered the besieged population in the northern half of the Gaza Strip to evacuate to the south, warning that it would soon intensify its attack on the Strip's upper half. The order has left more than a million people, half of whom are children, frantically attempting to flee amid continuing airstrikes, in a walled enclave where no destination is safe. As Palestinian journalist Ruwaida Kamal Amer wrote today from Gaza, "refugees from the north are already arriving in Khan Younis, where the missiles never stop and we're running out of food, water, and power." The UN has warned that the flight of people from the northern part of Gaza to the south will create "devastating humanitarian consequences" and will "transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation." Over the last week, Israel's violence against Gaza has killed more than 1,800 Palestinians, injured thousands, and displaced more than 400,000 within the strip. And yet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised today that what we have seen is "only the beginning." Israel's campaign to displace Gazans-and potentially expel them altogether into Egypt-is yet another chapter in the Nakba, in which an estimated 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes during the 1948 war that led to the creation of the State of Israel. But the assault on Gaza
"The United States government, while not solely responsible for the damage, has a significant obligation to invest in humanitarian assistance and reconstruction in post-9/11 war zones," said the author of a new report.

Erika López Prater, an adjunct professor at Hamline University, said she knew many Muslims have deeply held religious beliefs that prohibit depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. So last semester for a global art history class, she took many precautions before showing a 14th-century painting of Islam’s founder.

In the syllabus, she warned that images of holy figures, including the Prophet Muhammad and the Buddha, would be shown in the course. She asked students to contact her with any concerns, and she said no one did.

In class, she prepped students, telling them that in a few minutes, the painting would be displayed, in case anyone wanted to leave.

Then Dr. López Prater showed the image — and lost her teaching gig.

Racialized are prime targets of pro-Israel attacks and it's deliberate.

What do Faisal Bhaba, Desmond Cole, Javier Dávila, Nadia Shoufani, Rehab Nazzal, Rana Zaman, Linda Sarsour, Idris Elbakri and Fadi Ennab and countless others have in common?

They are racialized people who have been special targets of pro-Israel lobby organizations in Canada because they spoke out on Palestinian rights. And these examples suggest how the defend-Israel-at-all-costs industry has a racism and Islamophobia problem.

The answer to the question “Who is antisemitic?” might well be “Anyone, but especially a racialized person, who criticizes Israel.”

From October 28 to November 11, 2022, Michael Bueckert, Vice President of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), participated in a two-week delegation to the occupied Palestinian territories and Palestinian communities within Israel (often referred to as ’48 Palestine). The trip was organized in conjunction with Peter Larson of the Ottawa Forum on Israel/Palestine (OFIP), and Philip Sherwood, a member of the national coordinating team of the United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Israel (UNJPPI) was the third member of the delegation. The trip provided CJPME’s Bueckert with the opportunity to connect directly with many organizations and individuals who are working to protect human rights and fight for a just future in Palestine-Israel.

For more than four decades, the increasing polarization of Middle East politics has been at the centre of serious threats to academic freedom and freedom of expression in universities and colleges in Canada and around the world. Current flashpoints are the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism.

BDS was initiated in 2005 on the first anniversary of the advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice1 in which the West Bank barrier was declared a violation of international law. BDS, coordinated by the Palestinian BDS National Committee, calls for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against Israel to pressure it to withdraw from the occupied territories, remove the separation barrier in the West Bank, grant full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and recognize the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties.

In 2016, the IHRA adopted its Working Definition of Antisemitism2 and began pressing governments and non-governmental institutions and organizations to formally adopt it. Controversy centres on several of the “contemporary examples of antisemitism” that are included with the IHRA definition, and which relate to expression about the state of Israel and its policies.

Unveiling the Chilly Climate: The Suppression of Speech on Palestine in Canada, written by Sheryl Nestel and Rowan Gaudet and published by Independent Jewish Voices, is the first broad and detailed examination of the experiences of faculty and students whose work is critical of the policies of Israel toward Palestine and Palestinians or who actively attempt to change those policies through their support of of BDS and opposition to the adoption of the IHRA definition.

While focused primarily on Canada, the report briefly touches on the experiences faced by European academics, artists, and students who publicly support Palestinian rights. The report provides useful profiles of the major organizations that challenge Canadian academics and students who are critical of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.

Islamophobia in Canada has reached deadly proportions. In recent years the country has been rocked by two unprecedented attacks against Muslims. The first took place at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Quebec City on January 29, 2017, when six men were killed after evening prayers. The second attack came four years later, on June 6, 2021, in London, Ontario when four members of a Canadian-Pakistani Muslim family were intentionally mowed down by a truck and killed. Both deadly attacks occurred at the hands of Whitenationalists. Adding to the death toll, in 2020, a man linked to a neo-Nazi death cult stabbed the caretaker at a Toronto mosque to death. In 2022, a man entered the Dar Al-Tawheed Islamic Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, after early morning prayers brandishing a hatchet and bear spray. It is alleged that he was an “ex-Muslim” who had posted anti-Muslim posts on social media and was attempting to “kill terrorists.”

Hate crimes against Muslims range from deadly mass killings and targeted attacks like these, to acts of vandalism at mosques, harassment, and physical aggression. Gendered Islamophobia is increasingly prevalent as Muslim women wearing religious attire have faced verbal and physical assaults across the country. These acts are expressions of the anti-Muslim bigotry and racism that pervade many facets of Canada’s social, cultural, and political landscape.

Since the 9/11 attacks, national polls have revealed negative perceptions of Islam and Muslims among Canadians that include distrust, fear of radicalization, support for bans on religious attire, and concerns that Islam is not compatible with Canadian values. These attitudes justify and fortify state policies that police and regulate Islamic attire in the public sphere as well as security policies that unduly target Muslim communities as suspect and as potential threats to public safety.

Heightened fear and moral panic, proliferation of fake news, and political figures dog whistling Islamophobic ideologies have led to the widespread normalization of Islamophobia, creating the perfect storm for anti-Muslim hate crimes. Within this complex terrain, combatting Islamophobia is like playing a game of “whack-a-mole” as new Islamophobic agitators and groups continue to emerge, align, and gather momentum in a common cause of fomenting Islamophobic paranoia and mounting anti-Muslim campaigns.

The hijab protests in Iran are among the most courageous movements we have seen in contemporary times. On Sept. 16, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested in Tehran for not wearing her head scarf properly, as determined by so-called morality police-men, of course. She died in custody. Now, women and men are-without hyperbole-risking their lives by standing up against a tyrannical regime that forces women to cover up.

A former Guantanamo detainee, whose story of detention and torture was featured in a best-selling memoir and Hollywood film, is going to court to try to force the Canadian government to reveal its role in his ordeal.

Mohamedou Ould Slahi, a Mauritanian who lived briefly in Montreal, has launched a $30-million lawsuit against the federal government. He alleges Canadian officials made false claims about him that were then relied upon by his Mauritanian, Jordanian and American interrogators during his more than 14 years of imprisonment without charge.

“Canada’s sharing of flawed intelligence sparked a vicious echo chamber,” reads Slahi’s statement of claim, which was filed in Federal Court on Friday.

Anti-Palestinian racism takes various forms including: denying the Nakba and justifying violence against Palestinians; failing to acknowledge Palestinians as an Indigenous people with a collective identity, belonging and rights in relation to occupied and historic Palestine; erasing the human rights and equal dignity and worth of Palestinians; excluding or pressuring others to exclude Palestinian perspectives, Palestinians and their allies; defaming Palestinians and their allies with slander such as being inherently antisemitic, a terrorist threat/sympathizer or opposed to democratic values.

OVER THE LAST year, there has been an ongoing public debate as to whether the actions the Israeli government is enacting in the Occupied Palestinian Territories can be classified as apartheid under international law.

On 1 February, Amnesty International became the latest NGO to class it as apartheid, calling it 'a cruel system of domination and a crime against humanity'. This followed earlier declarations of apartheid by fellow human rights groups, Yesh Din, B'Tselem and Human Rights Watch.

As the former Attorney General of Israel, I have spent my career analysing Israel's most pressing legal questions. Israel's occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem was a fundamental dilemma during my tenure and beyond.

'A gross injustice' Israel's ongoing domination over these territories is a gross injustice that must be urgently rectified.

The purpose of the paper is to provide an overview of the far-right extremist ecosystem in Canada that can serve as a resource for the Muslim community, as well as other groups and individuals who seek to better inform themselves for the purpose of countering this threat. It also seeks to advance ideas for how to counter this threat, while appreciating the complexity of the phenomenon.

It provides an overview of far-right extremism, a history of these movements in Canada, an overview of far-right movements today and policy ideas that may further action by all levels of government, and communities themselves.

Sept. 11, 2001, marked the start of a new era for Muslims in the United States.

Shortly after al-Qaida terrorists attacked the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, many Muslims, as well as other Arab Americans, became the targets of anger and racism.

Mosques were burned or destroyed and death threats and harassment followed many Muslims in the weeks following the attacks, according to congressional testimony from the Southern Poverty Law Center in 2011. Some victims were beaten, attacked or held at gunpoint for merely being perceived as Muslim, the organization said.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who is Muslim, reflected on 9/11 and the discrimination that followed in an interview with ABC News. "As Americans, as people who are living here, we were also attacked," she said. "This is our community, this is our country, and there were Muslims who lost their lives in those towers, who were Muslim firefighters, who lost their lives."

Everyday since 9/11, the U.S. military has disciplined soldiers who failed to do their jobs properly. They have been punished for minor offenses, like being late for duty, and for serious crimes, such as murder or assault.

Since 2001, there have been more than 1.3 million cases of discipline in the armed forces, according to the Pentagon's annual reports on military justice. But the generals who misled Congress and the American public about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have not needed to worry about negative consequences for their careers. After 20 years of conducting a disinformation campaign about what was really happening on the ground, not a single U.S. general has faced any punishment. The reverse happened-they were praised for their deceptively upbeat assessments and given more stars, and when they retired with generous military pensions, they landed high-paying jobs on corporate boards, further profiting from their disingenuousness.

The global war on terror has killed nearly 1 million people globally and cost more than $8 trillion since it began two decades ago. These staggering figures come from a landmark report issued by Brown University's Costs of War Project, an ongoing research effort to document the economic and human impact of post-9/11 military operations. The report-which looks at the tolls of wars waged in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and other regions where the U.S. is militarily engaged-is the latest in a series published by the Costs of War Project and provides the most extensive public accounting to date of the consequences of open-ended U.S. conflicts in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa, referred to today as the "forever wars."

IN THE IMMEDIATE aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, U.S.-backed Afghan warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum’s forces murdered hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Taliban prisoners by jamming them into metal shipping containers and letting them suffocate. At the time, Dostum was on the CIA’s payroll and had been working with U.S. special forces to oust the Taliban from power.

The Bush administration blocked subsequent efforts to investigate the mass murder, even after the FBI interviewed witnesses among the surviving Afghans who had been moved to the U.S. prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and after human rights officials publicly identified the mass grave site where Dostum’s forces had disposed of bodies. Later, President Barack Obama promised to investigate, and then took no action.

There may be 100 times more hate crimes in Canada than cops would have us believe. According to the government agency Statistics Canada, law enforcement across the country reported there were 1,946 hate crimes in 2019. But according to newly released numbers by StatCan, there were 223,000 self-reported hate crimes (rounded to the nearest 1,000) over the same time period. The estimated number comes from the general survey in 2019 in which StatCan asked 22,000 Canadians if they were a victim of a hate crime. "In Canada, you're more likely to be the victim of a hate crime than be injured in a motor vehicle accident," said the Canadian Anti-Hate Network (CAHN). CANH requested and analyzed the data, publishing an article about it on Wednesday.

According to Statistics Canada, there were an estimated 223,000 self-reported hate crimes in Canada in 2019, with the highest proportion in Ontario (33%), Quebec (28%), and Alberta (14%). In the same period, law enforcement reported 1,951 hate crimes, meaning that less than 1% of perceived hate crimes in 2019 were captured in the police-reported statistics.

IN JUNE, three Republicans in the House of Representatives-Michael Waltz, Jim Banks and Claudia Tenney-introduced a resolution censuring Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Presley, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for, among other things, "inciting anti-Semitic attacks across the United States." House Democrats accused their colleagues of Jew-hatred as well, just less explicitly. Rep. Ted Deutch did not mention his colleagues by name, but characterized their accusations of apartheid, and Tlaib's opposition to a Jewish state, as "[a]ttacks. .. against Jews," that "have led to antisemitism." Four more House Democrats-Josh Gottheimer, Kathy Manning, Elaine Luria, and Dean Phillips-denounced unspecified members of Congress for calling Israel an apartheid state or claiming it has committed acts of terrorism. "These statements," they alleged, "are antisemitic at their core." Such accusations have dogged Tlaib, Omar, Pressley, and Ocasio-Cortez since they entered Congress. Search for articles alleging that they are antisemitic and Google generates a seemingly endless supply. But if you search for articles suggesting that their critics are "anti-Palestinian," you'll find next to nothing. There's little indication that they've ever had to publicly respond to charges of anti-Palestinian bigotry at all.

~ Malcolm X, “Educate Our People in the Science of Politics” (1965)

Malcolm X was neither the first nor the last to spot this pattern. The fact is that even the worst racists try to appropriate the cause of self-defense, since it is easier to attack from moral high ground.

The pattern is plain. In his book The Reactionary Mind, Corey Robin linked it with “what is truly bizarre about conservatism: a ruling class resting its claim to power upon its sense of victimhood.” This is a well-developed ruse. Reinhold Niebuhr, the classical moralist of US power, saw this ruse as a pillar of what he described as “the imperial supremacy of the white races in the contemporary world.” To Niebuhr’s eyes, racism was strongest where it blurred the line between “the will-to-live and the will-to-power.” Where this line blurs, the moral fervor of a fight for survival can be enlisted in support of imperial domination: “So inextricably are the two intertwined, that the one may always be used to justify the other in conscious and unconscious deception.”

This ruse is standard. In the language of the Euro–American far right, the ruse is packaged in the slogans of “white genocide” or “white replacement.” The attempted white-power putsch of January 6, 2021 in Washington, D.C. was motivated by this falsified narrative of self-defense. The story, as told by the neo-Nazis of our time, is that Indigenous, African, and Asian people are preparing to do to Europeans what Europeans did to them. It follows that further white violence is necessary for white survival.

More than 14 million people, roughly half of them Jews and the other half Palestinians, live between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea under a single rule. The common perception in public, political, legal and media discourse is that two separate regimes operate side by side in this area, separated by the Green Line. One regime, inside the borders of the sovereign State of Israel, is a permanent democracy with a population of about nine million, all Israeli citizens. The other regime, in the territories Israel took over in 1967, whose final status is supposed to be determined in future negotiations, is a temporary military occupation imposed on some five million Palestinian subjects.

THE IMAGE has become a familiar one: A group of young Israelis is visiting Auschwitz, many of them wrapped in the Israeli flag. They chant the Kaddish; they sing songs; together, they are a phoenix that has risen from the literal ashes of the millions of Jews killed by the Nazis. Their mere existence seems to be proclaiming vengeance wrought on Hitler. They are young; they are beautiful; they are noble. But in The Memory Monster-a brilliant, challenging, and uncompromising novel by the Israeli writer Yishai Sarid, recently translated from the Hebrew by Yardenne Greenspan-they are something far more sinister. In this grim portrait of an Israeli scholar who makes his living leading tours of the hell of the camps, Sarid, son of the late left-wing politician Yossi Sarid, forces us to question the complacency and moral blindness that accompanies the centrality of the Holocaust in Israeli life. It's a blindness broadly on display in Israeli Holocaust memorialization, currently epitomized in the nomination of Effi Eitam-a far-right politician and former general who advocates the expulsion of Palestinians from their lands and their exclusion from political life-to head Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust memorial. Those who support the appointment, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, fail to appreciate the revolting irony of a man with these views serving as the face of an institution that memorializes the expulsion of the Jews from their homes and their exclusion from the political life of their native lands. It is this irony that courses through The Memory Monster. The nameless narrator, though based in Poland, works for Yad Vashem, and the novel takes the form of a letter to the director of the institution. He recounts his experiences as a tour guide there and in the death camps of Poland and explains his downward moral and emotional spiral, a result of living the Holocaust daily. As the narrator explains, he more or less fell into this line of work. As a graduate student, he lacked direction or any desire to exert himself in the pursuit of an academic career and wavered among many possibilities: diplomacy, Asian studies, moving to Thailand. Yitzhak Rabin never evolved into a peacemaker, he retained his “warrior” attitude of openly resorting to the mass killing of civilians to serve his political aims throughout his entire career.

The “Liberal Zionist” crew acknowledges that Rabin had some messy things on his resume, principally the 1948 ethnic cleansing of Lydda and Ramle and his brutal response as Defense Minister to the first Intifada that killed many hundreds of protesters against the Occupation and “broke the bones” of many thousands more.

Yossi Gurvitz and Amjad Iraqi and others have thoroughly debunked the Rabin as Oslo peacemaker myth. As Alan Dershowitz recently reaffirmed, in a highly uncharacteristic display of honesty and accuracy, Rabin did not propose an actual Palestinian “state” but something “less than a state” ultimately controlled by Israel. While a genuine two-state solution of two independent states for two peoples still has moral and practical flaws in comparison to one state of equal citizens, Rabin attempted to force desperate Palestinians into something far worse: one state for Jews and another state-minus for Palestinians, both controlled by Israeli Jews.

Rabin laid the groundwork for blaming Palestinians for Israel’s refusal to end the occupation. Five years later, Ehud Barak would try the same gambit at Camp David, scripting a public relations spectacle of making the Palestinians an unacceptable offer he knew they’d refuse.

Lingering racial inequality is holding back America's economy.

America's failure to address wide gaps between Black and White communities has cost the economy up to $16 trillion over the past 20 years, according to an analysis published by Citigroup this week.

The report focusing on inequities that exist in wages, education, housing and investment underscores racial tensions that are helping to fuel unrest in the United States today.

"The 400 years of enslavement of Black populations in the Americas has residual effects that persist to this day despite tomes of legislation providing equal access to various aspects of American life under the law," Citi economists wrote in a 104-page report that quotes Martin Luther King, Jr.

And if the gaps are closed today, $5 trillion can be added to U.S. GDP over the next five years.

According to Hitler’s Jewish Soldiers by Bryan Mark Rigg, thousands of full Jews and more than a hundred-thousand part Jews joined the military of the Third Reich. The stories of these men and of the psychological as well as the physical hazards they endured altered the book I had originally set out to write.

Some of the Jewish men who fought in Hitler’s military had been drafted. Others were patriots whose fathers, grandfathers, and uncles had served in the Imperial Army in WWI, and dutifully enlisted. One survivor described himself as a German first and a Jew second. Jewish allegiance to Germany in the early days of the Third Reich is one of the great unrequited love stories of history.

Last year, I almost quit journalism. A major reason was an evolution in my perspective on the industry. My first journalism experience was at the McGill Daily as an undergraduate student. The independent paper is explicitly leftist, so my understanding of journalism was built from a progressive perspective. As such, I didn't think I had illusions about corporate media in Canada, especially as we had an antagonistic relationship with these outlets.

It is nearly impossible to live in today’s world without having come across mention of the legendary Noam Chomsky. His work as a linguist, historian, political activist and philosopher, which spans nearly a century, has had an immeasurable impact on contemporary world views. Not only have his more than a hundred books become the basis for a vast milieu of modern thought, but he himself has become a widely admired public figure whose thoughtful take on current events is as crucial as ever in our increasingly hostile, chaotic sociopolitical climate.

While he and Robert Scheer, the renowned left-wing thinker and Truthdig’s award-winning editor in chief, are both well known in progressive circles for their lifelong work challenging systems of oppression and false narratives about American exceptionalism, until now, the two had never had a public conversation. In a remarkable two-part interview, Chomsky and Scheer meet to discuss topics ranging from the type of dystopian future we face to the unfortunate, brutal success of the U.S. empire.

Anti-Muslim sentiment appears to be the main motivation for those who support a ban on religious symbols, a new poll has found.

The poll of 1,212 Quebecers, conducted May 3-7, found 63 per cent of Quebecers supported a ban on religious symbols for judges, police officers and prison guards, and 59 per cent were in favour of a similar ban for teachers. This was true for all age categories except for 18-24 year olds, who were against such a ban.

The fascist BJP Party of populist Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has legitimized and enabled India’s militant Hindu fascist groups, and turned a blind eye when members of these groups (who support Modi) commit violent and deadly attacks against against religious minorities, with Indian Muslims being the main target of these attacks.  Persecution, murder and lynching of people who belong to minority faith communities have been happening for years.  But since the election of Modi the murder of Muslims for perceived slights to Hindus or the Hindu faith have multiplied, and Modi's government has ignored these crimes.

Hate crimes in the United States against Muslims or people who look as if they may be Muslim are at an all-time high. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, from 2015 to 2016 the number of anti-Muslim hate groups in the U.S. grew 197 percent and anti-Muslim hate crimes surged 67 percent. From January to July 2017, there were 63 attacks on mosques.'

In June 2017, Nabra Hassanen, a 17-year-old Virginia girl walking back to her community mosque after visiting IHOP with her friends, was attacked and killed. The month prior, two men on the commuter train in Portland, Oregon, were stabbed and killed after trying to defend two young women in Muslim garb who were being harassed. Unfortunately, the list goes on much longer.

Since 9/11, Islam has been unfairly demonized and Muslims stigmatized. Muslim youths in the West have grown up scrutinized, shamed, and bullied because of their religion. During the 2016 U.S. electoral campaign, Islamophobic rhetoric was an accepted form of bigotry used to spread fear and garner votes. Anti-Muslim bigotry in the United States draws upon a significant network of funding. The surge in anti-Muslim violence came amid a year marked both by Daesh (aka ISIS) atrocities and by slamophobic political rhetoric. Yet the most numerous victims of Daesh have been Muslims. Muslims are thus beset by both the hijacking of their religion by groups such as Daesh and the rise of Islamophobia.

Islamophobia is more than harsh talk; it is a systemic and institutional form of racism. It is the silencing of Muslim voices. It is selective condemnation. It is the constant not-so-random stops at airport checkpoints. It is the recently renewed travel ban. It is FBI surveillance and policing of the Muslim community. It is when merely speaking Arabic is mistaken for an extremist threat. It is asking Muslims to apologize for crimes they did not commit. It is calling for a Muslim registry. It is a politician assuring worried voters that former President Obama is not a Muslim but is in fact “a very nice man” — as if the two were mutually exclusive.

Islamophobia is not a Muslim problem, but an affront to our common humanity. It is a fundamental violation of human rights and human dignity. It is deeply interconnected  with racism, xenophobia, and other forms of dehumanization, often serving those who seek to maintain prevailing power structures. Responding to Islamophobia is vital and a moral responsibility for policymakers, civil rights advocates across religious, racial, and ethnic lines, and interfaith movements and organizations.

Nathan Lean takes us through the disturbing world of conservative bloggers, right wing talk show hosts, evangelical religious leaders, and politicians—all united in a quest to revive post-9/11 xenophobia and convince their compatriots that Islam is the enemy.

The book uncovers modern scare tactics, reveals each groups’ true motives, and exposes the ideologies that drive their propaganda machine.

Situating Islamaphobia within a long history of national and international fears, The Islamophobia Industry challenges the illogical narrative of hate that has dominated discussions about Muslims and Islam for too long.

In the grim days following the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, news commentator and retired Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Peters appeared on Fox News, saying: " Not all Muslims are terrorists, but virtually all terrorists are Muslim. " Peters's statement represents the sort of venomous rhetoric that has emerged all too often this election. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has put an immigration ban on Muslims at the core of his nativist pitch to voters, alleging that American Muslims and mosques are knowingly harboring terrorists. While many Americans, including President Obama, have spoken out against Trump's characterization of American Muslims as terrorists, there has been little opposition to the premise that all terrorists are Muslims. The prevalence of Islamophobia has been coupled with a selective definition of terror under US law, contributing to the belief that all terrorists are Muslims and hence that all Muslims be viewed with suspicion, justifiably hated, excoriated, and even banned. At the same time, amplification by social media reinforces hostile political rhetoric, making legislative reform that protects Muslims as effectively as the rest of the population more difficult. This paper dissects the premise that terror is a particularly Muslim problem and analyzes the key role that social media is playing in this issue. The paper begins with a quantitative snapshot of both anti-Muslim and anti-Islamophobic Google searches and statements made on social media. It then moves to a qualitative analysis of the low rates of reporting and prosecution of hate crimes against Muslims, paying particular attention to differing standards of proof required for these prosecutions. The second section looks at terror prosecutions of Muslims, noting how speech—and especially online speech— is treated very differently by courts when it involves Muslim American defendants and the mere possibility of terror connections. In paying particular attention to prosecutions under the Material Support for Terrorism Statute, we note how concerns raised in the prosecutorial context of hate crimes (such as requirements of intent and purposefulness) are summarily discarded when they arise in relation to terrorism cases. The analysis reveals a deep double standard between the identification and conviction of domestic and foreign terrorism. Under US law as it exists today, there is no provision criminalizing the material support of a domestic terror organization. This means that statements made by white supremacist groups that incite violence against minorities are provided First Amendment protection and cannot be prosecuted without meeting a very high standard of proof. The consequence is that hate speech against Muslims is not simply tolerated and largely unpunished, but normalized into a valid political position. Second, there is no legislation criminalizing material support for domestic terrorism, or even actual acts of domestic terrorism. What has no legal reality in turn has no moral or social reality. The statement that " all terrorists are Muslim " is created and affirmed in America by the language of statutes that recognize only " foreign " organizations as the sources of terrorist acts. Hate speech against Muslims is not simply tolerated and largely unpunished, but normalized into a valid political position.

The North Florida Survival Group teaches "patriots" of all ages to handle weapons and survive in the wild. Its goal is to defend "our Constitution against all enemy threats."

They and untold thousands like them are the extremists who hide among us, the right-wing militants who, since 2002, have killed more people in the United States than jihadis have. In that time, according to New America, a Washington think tank, Islamists launched nine attacks that murdered 45, while the right-wing extremists struck 18 times, leaving 48 dead. These Americans thrive on hate and conspiracy theories, many fed to them by politicians and commentators who blithely blather about government concentration camps and impending martial law and plans to seize guns and other dystopian gibberish, apparently unaware there are people listening who don’t know it’s all lies. These extremists turn to violence—against minorities, non-Christians, abortion providers, government officials—in what they believe is a fight to save America. And that potential for violence is escalating every day.

On a Thursday night, terrorists blew themselves up in the streets of Beirut. The next day, coordinated terrorist attacks in des rues of Paris. The same perpetrators targeted Muslims and Christians in the two different capitals. Just a month ago, it was a moving scene watching European women and men holding signs welcoming refugees arriving at train stations. Thus, the horrific attacks would become even more appalling if there was any truth to the news these terrorists might have hid among refugees to reach France. Especially since refugees found better reception in Europe than anywhere else, including many of the Arab and Muslim countries. And for these terrorists to exploit that hospitality is neither Arab nor a Muslim value. There could be no rationalisation to the terrorist attacks in Paris or the atrocious murders in Beirut, Baghdad, Damascus or Nigeria. Putting aside our virtuous indignation, however, we mustn't forget the so-called Islamic State (IS) was the illegitimate child of George Bush's " birth pangs of democracy. " The misguided US-led Western interventionist policies created the environment that gave birth to the refugees and terrorists.

The pundits in the West blaming Islam for the rise of extremism are projecting their own countries’ crimes onto the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims.

The kinds of people who blame Islam and Muslims for the spread of extremism are the kinds of people who have utmost faith in Western empire. Even if they admit that it “sometimes” engages in problematic behavior, they, deep-down, believe Western empire to be fundamentally rooted in good will, in humanitarianism, in progress, in the proselytizing of civilization.

This is the same logic that justified genocidal European colonialism, Western expansionism and Manifest Destiny, and the White Man’s Burden. And it is this same logic that promotes militarist policies and anti-Muslim and antirefugee bigotries in response to Islamist militants’ attacks — only serving to further fuel the fire of extremism.

On January 29th Muslim communities across Canada marked the seventh anniversary of the Quebec City Mosque shooting where six men were murdered by a white supremacist in an act of hate, and the National Day of Action Against Islamophobia.  However, despite the significance of this day and what it symbolizes – standing against anti-Muslim hate and remembering victims of a deadly attack – Canadian Muslims are also having to contend with the deeply troubling situation of politicians and governments in this country enabling hate against Muslims.  This is the result of feelings of betrayal in the community about the unwillingness of the Canadian government to live up to promises made to take aggressive action to fight Islamophobia, and due to the government’s responses and actions since October relating to the genocide being committed by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza.

It is evident from statements by Israeli leaders and the US, which has been running interference for Israel at the UN to prevent a real ceasefire, that the people of Gaza will be subjected to horrors by Israel for months.  In the face of this Canadians must continue pressuring our politicians to find their humanity, which they seem to have lost over the past three months.

As the Christmas holiday season concludes and we begin a new year many Canadians have been feeling anything but festive, with many calling for "no Christmas as usual".  It's hard to be cheery and celebrate when the news has been showing us destroyed hospitals, mosques, churches, and the bodies of dead children – horrific atrocities being committed by the Israeli military against Palestinians for almost three months.

Despite increased awareness about the extent of Islamophobia in Canada Muslim advocacy organizations and anti-racism groups have called for a broader discussion about efforts to combat this insidious form of bigotry, not only in Canadian society but also in the way that Canada conducts its foreign policy.

For Muslims in North America the very real risk of violent Islamophobia means that some will only pray at a mosque if it has a security system – surveillance cameras, key card access, and metal detectors – because it is the only way they feel safe worshipping.  For those Muslims who wear religious attire as part of their identity, like the hijab (worn by some Muslim women), the fear of physical violence or verbal harassment is a daily part of their life.  Certainly Black Muslim women in Alberta know this only too well given the multiple attacks against them over the past few years in that province.

Canada is guilty of a lack of concerted action against states committing gross human rights violations, enabling anti-Muslim hate to grow, including when there is a nexus in Canada.

Islamophobia persists, often state-sponsored or, as described by researchers at Georgetown University’s Bridge Initiative, “accepted and even applauded among mainstream media and elected officials,” including in Canada. It should come as no surprise, then, that a recent study by Angus Reid indicated that 39 per cent of Canadians outside of Quebec hold an unfavourable view of Islam, but in Quebec, that number exceeds 52 per cent.

The letter also says that the political attacks against Amira Elghawaby by the Quebec government, Quebec provincial legislators, the leader of the Bloc Quebecois, and the leader of the Conservative Party makes abundantly clear to Canadians how deeply rooted Islamophobia is in Canada, in Quebec in particular, and at the highest levels of the Canadian political establishment."

Many NDP supporters reacted to the decision by claiming that it smacks of racism and misogyny, and is the latest example of how the party has strayed from its social democratic roots under Horgan's leadership. The party that prides itself on standing for progressive values, promoting diversity, equity and inclusivity, fighting racism, and supporting women has done exactly the opposite with this decision.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith decided to mark the start of her leadership of Alberta by demonstrating a serious lack of leadership when she made a comment in a media conference last week that unvaccinated people are “the most discriminated-against group” in her lifetime. In the opinion of many Albertans, including opposition MLAs and leaders of racialized communities, she must apologize unreservedly for her outrageous and ignorant comment.

For the third time in five years the Conservative Party of Canada has elected a new leader.  This time it is Ottawa area MP Pierre Poilievre.  And if his campaign to lead the Conservatives is any indication then his victory poses a potential threat to Canada's democratic and social stability.

Since the start of Poilievre’s leadership campaign there have been repeated dire warnings by political analysts and media voices about the possible danger to Canada of a Poilievre led Conservative Party.  Now that he has won the leadership Canadians need to pay more attention to those warnings.

On June 6th Muslims across Canada marked the first anniversary of the day a white supremacist drove a truck into five members of a Muslim family while they were out for an afternoon walk in London, Ontario. The hatemotivated crime resulted in the death of Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, their daughter Yumna Afzaal, 15, and Salman Afzaal's mother, Talat Afzaal, 74. The couple's son, Fayez, 9, was seriously injured in the attack and hospitalized. He was left orphaned as a result of the attack.

Two years ago the world witnessed the murder of a Black man (George Floyd) at the hands of a white police officer in the US when his death was recorded by an eyewitness on their cell phone.  The perpetrator was ultimately convicted for the crime he committed.  But this did little to wipe away the pain, anger and sense of injustice that was unleashed in 2020 as anti-racism and anti-police brutality protests erupted in cities in the US, Canada, Europe and other countries around the world.  It is deeply troubling that it was only after George Floyd’s murder was captured on video that some politicians finally acknowledged that systemic and institutional racism within police forces was a serious problem that must be addressed, even though this was not the first time that an unarmed Black man had been killed by police under suspicious circumstances.

Today’s memorial lecture takes place in the shadow of another violent and deadly act of hate targeting Black people.  A little less than two weeks ago on May 14th an 18-year-old white supremacist opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York in a Black neighbourhood, killing 10 people and wounding three others in a racially motivated act of hate.

Four weeks ago, on March 21st, the world marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is the day in 1960 when police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against Apartheid "pass laws". In 1979, the General Assembly adopted a programme of activities to be undertaken during the second half of the Decade for Action to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination. On that same occasion, the General Assembly decided that a week of solidarity with people struggling against racism and racial discrimination, beginning on March 21st, would be organized annually. Canadian anti-racism and human rights organizations mark this day every year by holding events that highlight the struggle to overcome racial discrimination, and issue calls for action to fight hate and racism at a government and societal level. This year Canadian human rights and anti-racism voices came together at a media conference in Ottawa on March 21st to call out racism in Canada's domestic and foreign policy, as well as admonish the Canadian and provincial governments for their very weak responses to fighting the spread of hate and white supremacy across the country.

The following is based on a presentation on racism in the media delivered at the “Dismantling Colonialism” conference organized by the Canadian Congress on Inclusive Diversity and Workplace Equity on January 20 & 21, 2022, on behalf of Canadians United Against Hate.

The era of political colonialism may have ended in the post-World War II period, as European colonies in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Asia gained independence, but the repercussions of colonialism continue to be felt today. In western nations, which have allowed large scale immigration from former colonial territories, the repercussions of colonialism continue to negatively impact racialized communities, and they continue to affect society at large in harmful ways. Colonial ways of thinking, including the racism that accompanies them, are evident in all aspects of Canadian society, and one of those aspects is mainstream media. Racism in the media is a topic about which there has been considerable academic research, and given the many facets of the issue this discussion will only scratch its surface, and will focus primarily on how biased or racist media has impacted Muslims. Media has immense power to shape societies. It has been the case historically, and it is even more so since the start of the broadcast media era, the era of cable news networks, and now during the digital media era.

The organizers and supporters of the so-called "freedom protests" that erupted in Ottawa and across the country three weeks ago present a danger to the political and economic stability of Canada and the security of Canadians. Deeply troubling is the fact that the key protest organizers have a record of promoting messages of racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and right-wing extremism. The fact that the protesters in Ottawa and elsewhere across Canada are willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with such voices, and ignore the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who joined them in Parliament Hill should tell Canadians everything they need to know about who these people are. The reality is that these people are as dangerous as those involved in the Capitol Hill insurrection in Washington DC on January 6, 2021.

War should be remembered for the utter horror that it is, the fact that politicians have sent other people's children off to die, and that Remembrance Day also commemorates a very ugly history.

Today, November 11th, the nation marked another Remembrance Daya day to remember the soldiers sent off to fight wars far from home who never returned. However, since the 9/11 terrorist attacks politicians in Canada and other Western nations have made a spectacle of the occasion. While on its surface the day is used to acknowledge Canadian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice, it is now also used to instil nationalism and sentimentality in the populace, and for political gain by glossing over the ugly history behind this tradition.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford's response to criticism about a comment he made relating to immigrants, at a media conference in Windsor on October 20th, demonstrated ignorance about how racism is perpetuated that is shocking in a political leader. In non-scripted remarks about a shortage of workers in Ontario Ford put his foot in his mouth when he called for more immigrants to come to the province, but not "If you think you're coming to collect the dole and sit around."

Canadian voters spoke on election day, and it is now time for Parliamentarians to get down to business to deal with Canada's other pandemic that has been around long before COVID-19.  I'm talking about the pandemic of hate and racism that has been ignored for decades, has resulted in deadly violence, and for which insufficient resources have been committed.

I and many other Canadians were unsettled by the fact that during the election campaign the issue of fighting hate and racism was barely mentioned, even though 60 per cent of Canadians see racism as a serious problem facing the country.
During crucial periods of both World Wars, when they were needed most, Muslim, Sikh and Hindu soldiers were deployed to every theatre of the war in support of Allied efforts. They were vital to western victory.

and-other-social-media.html Frances Haugen, a former data scientist and product manager at Facebook, became a hero to many critics of social media when she testified before a US Senate committee that her former employer knowingly magnifies hate and seeks to profit from promoting hateful content on its platforms. Her bombshell revelations made to Senators were supported by information contained in thousands of internal Facebook documents which she leaked to the Wall Street Journal, and in her comments during an interview she did with the investigative journalism program 60 Minutes. The information Haugen brought to light about the toxic nature of Facebook's business model, and its willingness to put profits ahead of the well-being of society, should be a wakeup call for lawmakers in Canada and other nations that it can no longer be business as usual in how social media companies operate. Her damning testimony should provide motivation for governments to take action against the senior executives of Facebook to hold them liable for the harms their platforms inflict on society, and to look at regulating all social media platforms.

If the results from the federal election say anything it is Canadian voters speaking loudly and telling Justin Trudeau, Erin O'Toole and Jagmeet Singh to stop the politicking and get back to work. One of the areas of business where Parliamentarians need to work harder when the House of Commons is back in session is to deal with Canada's other pandemic that has been around long before COVID-19, the pandemic of hate and racism that has been ignored for decades, which has resulted in deadly violence, and for which insufficient resources and political capital have been committed. Many Canadians were incredulous that during the election campaign the issue of fighting hate and racism was barely mentioned, despite the fact that 60 per cent of Canadians see racism as a serious problem facing the country. An IPSOS study released on September 3rd revealed that there is increased awareness among Canadians about the continued mistreatment against Indigenous people, domestic terrorism targeting Muslim Canadians, racism against Black Canadians, and anti-Asian hate crimes. This awareness has led to Canadians expecting governments to implement policies and programs to address these issues.

Today, September 30th, marked the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. It is seen as a historic occasion where Canada officially acknowledged the history of what was done to Indigenous People on this land. Creation of this commemorative day was one of the 94 "calls to action" in the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) which was released in December 2015. Establishing the holiday, according to the TRC report, was intended to honour survivors of Residential Schools, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. It is also an opportunity for settler-Canadians to consider the trauma that was inflicted on Indigenous Peoples, and the trauma that they have been dealing with generation after generation until the present day.

The election that a majority of Canadians did not want is over and it returned a Parliament barely different than the previous one. Now that it is over it is time for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Conservative leader Erin O'Toole, and New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh to get to work dealing with Canada's other pandemic, the one none of the party leaders addressed during the election campaign that has been around long before Covid19 landed on our shores, namely the pandemic of racism and hate which has been ignored for decades. Addressing this issue is even more urgent given that more than 800,000 Canadians voted for the People's Party of Canada, a party that is anti-immigrant, anti-refugee, and has embraced racism and white supremacists. Many Canadians, particularly members of racialized communities, were troubled that combatting hate was barely mentioned by Trudeau, O'Toole or Singh during the campaign. It begs the question "why not" when 60 per cent of Canadians see it as a serious problem, according to a poll released on September 3rd.

On the day the federal election was called, the far right People's Party of Canada (PPC), led by former Conservative Maxime Bernier, was polling at 3.3 per cent, below the Green Party. A month later, the PPC has surged past the Greens, and as of September 18th it is polling at 7.3 per cent, placing it fourth nationally for voter preference. If voter turnout in this election is the same or surpasses that from 2019 it means that more than 1.34 million Canadian voters are thinking of casting their ballot for a party that would undo measures to curb hate speech and fight racism, reverse climate change initiatives, whose leader has refused to get a Covid vaccine and supports Covid conspiracy theorists, is seen as anti-science, anti-immigrant, anti-refugee, has promoted homophobic and anti-trans messaging, and is okay with having extremist right-wing and white supremacist voters among its supporters. This ideological and policy direction of the PPC makes it no different than the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) cult of Donald Trump in the US.

This past week the Liberals became the last of the three major parties to release their policy platform for the federal election taking place on September 20th. Like those of the Conservatives and the NDP the Liberal document is filled with scores of promises touching every area of public policy, including proposals on fighting the rising tide of racism across the country. However, given the unimpressive record of Justin Trudeau's government on addressing issues of hate, bigotry and racism during their six years in office Canadian voters, and particularly voters from racialized communities, need to take the Liberal proposals with a grain of salt.

During a media conference in Sherbrooke, Quebec on August 31st Bloc Quebecois leader Yves Francois-Blanchet said it was "reprehensible" that Quebec Muslims and civil rights organizations were continuing with their constitutional challenges to Quebec's Bill 21 "secularism" law, which primarily targets religiously observant Muslims, Sikhs and Jews, and prohibits them from working as teachers, police officers, judges and other jobs that are publicly funded if they wear items or clothing that identifies their faith. However, what is truly reprehensible is Blanchet's support for Quebec's 'secularism' law, legislation that is de facto state-sanctioned hate and bigotry against racialized religious minorities in that province.

Other than the COVID-19 pandemic, only one issue has dominated public discourse in Canada this year: Racism. The murder of George Floyd, a Black man, by a white Minneapolis police officer in May, 2020, set off anti-racism protests and calls for racial justice across North America. The resulting discussion about the pervasiveness of racism, and demands that governments do something about it, makes an election the ideal setting for political parties to demonstrate their commitment to anti-racism.

LAST UPDATED: April 7, 2024

This handbook was created as a quick reference resource for those not well versed on the issues related to the Palestinian struggle for freedom from the Apartheid Israeli regime, and the conquest and occupation of the land that became Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

In addition, this is offered as a resource for journalists who are looking for background information on various aspects of the asymmetrical “conflict” between Israel – one the most powerful military powers in the world (a nation with an illegal arsenal of nuclear weapons), and Palestinians, a people with neither army, navy nor air force living under the longest and most brutal military occupation since World War 2, a people who yearn to be free.

All the resources in this guide are for use by anyone who seeks to get beyond the biased and prejudiced political and media narratives that have become common about the Palestinian struggle for justice and freedom, and want to counter the pro-Israel Zionist narrative which seeks to portray Israel as a meek and law-abiding victim of anti-Jewish hate, and all Palestinians and anyone who criticizes Israel as anti-Semitic monsters bent on the destruction of all Jews.  The reality is that Israel has become a racist, Apartheid state bent on the destruction of Palestinian people (something which originated with the original founders of Zionist ideology), and particularly under the government formed in early 2023.  It should be noted that the Israeli government does not speak for all Jews, neither in Israel nor in the diaspora, as there are a significant percentage of Jews who oppose the Israeli government and its occupation of Palestinians.

Subject: Joint submission re: Online harms legislation

To whom it may concern,

As organizations and individuals with expertise in anti-racism, we are profoundly concerned by the government's proposed "online harms" legislationpurporting to address "terrorist content," "content that incites violence," "hate speech," "non-consensual sharing of intimate images," and "child sexual exploitation content." While the proposal is billed as protecting marginalized groups from "hate, harassment, and violent rhetoric online," we fear that, as currently formulated, it risks exacerbating the existing, well-documented pattern of online speech policing and removal targeting Indigenous, Black, Palestinian, and other colonized and racialized communities.
