Abstract: Developed from the perspective of historical anthropology, this article offers an updated review of the circulation of glass beads in Chile after the moment of Hispanic-Mapuche contact in the 16th century. Based on the comparison of historiographic sources and archaeological evidence, the work suggests that within the Mapuche society, the introduction of such artifacts did not displace the use of local beads or llangka in the short term, which resulted in the coexistence of both types at least until the 19th century.

Abstract: This paper analyzes the representations of mapuche otherness and polygamy in the nineteenth-century historiography. The compilation of information from sources of the period revealed that the predominant opinions targeted specific objectives. Particularly important was the argument of the need for eradicating and transforming Mapuche customs, by denigrating their traditional social organization. This argument was sustained based on the victimization of mapuche woman, a discursive element that has been scarcely investigated in Chile.

Abstract: This paper analyzes the presence and use of the categories of gender and ethnicity on hegemonic discourses about the mapuche people in the second half of the nineteenth century in Chile. Two kinds of sources were addressed -photography and classic historiography- paying special attention to the way in which narratives about the mapuche people, and particularly about mapuche women, were reconfigured according to the mentioned categories.

Abstract: This work explores how the theory of recognition contributes new social analysis tools to the studies of gender/ethnicity. The text covers a bibliographic revision which opens question marks linked to the identity and nation construction, the seeking for recognition by the indigenous subjects, and other contingent discursive resources.
