Mean and Variance of Sampling Distribution

A. Determine the mean (̅), variance (̅) and standard

deviation (̅) of each.

1. A random sample of size 40 is taken with replacement from a population with

mean 82.4 and variance 60.

Variance= (√32) ^2=32 Standard = √ σ^2 × √n = √8 x √4 = √32

2. A random sample of size 20 independent observations is taken from a
population with mean 23.8 and standard deviation 5.

Deviation = 23.8

3. A random sample of size 30 is drawn with replacement from a population with

mean 48 and standard deviation 6.5.

4. A random sample of size 30 taken from a population of 1000 with mean 20

and variance 9.

5. A random sample of size 80 taken from a population of 10000 with mean 46.5
and variance 16.
Mean = 5812.5 Variance = 2000 Deviation = 500

6. A random sample of size 45 taken from a population of 900 with mean 18.25
and variance 81.
Mean = 365 Variance = 1620 Deviation = 180
7. A random sample of size 36 taken from a population of 3200 whose mean is
28.6 and standard deviation is 54.4.
Mean = 28.6 Variance = 54.4 Deviation = 3200

8. A random sample of size 120 is taken with replacement from a population

with mean 509.23 and variance 40.

9. When 100 independent samples are taken

̅ 1 2 3 4 5

(̅) 1/12 3/12 4/12 3/12 1/12

10. When 20 samples are taken with replacement

̅ -1 0 1

(̅) 0.3 0.2 0.5

B. Compute the mean (̅), variance (̅) and standard deviation

(̅) of the sampling distribution taken from the following
populations.

1. When a sample of size 9 are taken with replacement from the population 1, 1,
2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4.

1004
2. When 25 numbers are drawn with replacement from a jar containing 1, 3, 5
and 6.

Mean = 5 + 10 + 15 + 20 + 25 / 5 = 15 Variance = 50
Standard = √ σ^2 = √50 = 5 √2 = 7.071068

3. What are the mean, variance and standard error of the sample mean when 60
students are taken from a population of 2000 with a mean score of 75 and
standard deviation of 5?

Solution: 42x30 / 42 = 30 Variance = 16 Standard = √16 = 4

4. The mean sugar level of 1000 patients in XYZ Hospital is 150 mg/dL with
variance of 64. If 50 of them were taken as samples, what are the mean,
variance and standard error of the sampling distribution?

Mean = 150 Variance = 1.28 Standard error = 0.8 √2

5. The mean IQ of 10000 students at AZA University is 98 with standard

deviation of 4. If 100 of them were taken as samples, what are the mean,
variance and standard error of the sampling distribution?
