The activity carried out by Luigi Garzi as an inventor for prints made in collaboration with Italian and French engravers is a topic that, with the exception of very rare references, has not yet been examined by critics. To partially fill this gap, ten different prints, kept at the Central Institute for Graphics in Rome, are presented here – six of them reproduced here for the first time. They bear witness to the constant collaboration that the painter undertakes, from the beginning to the late maturity, with well-known engravers such as Albert Clowet, Pietro Santi Bartoli and Arnold van Westerhout. Five of these prints, engraved with Garzi's invention, are published together with four different volumes of the time, three of which have so far been ignored by critics. One of these also contains a letter dedicated to Luigi Garzi "famous painter", here transcribed in the appendix, which testifies to the high esteem of contemporaries for the artist and provides an ante quem date for his cited works. Furthermore, this graphic corpus shows that the fame of Garzi and his paintings is also attested by the circulation of d’aprés engravings, such as those carved by Francesco Faraone Aquila, by van Westerhout himself, by the Count of Caylus and Nicolas Le Sueur.

The paper aims to demonstrate the importance of time in the imagery of Francesco Maria II della Rovere (1549–1631), the last Duke of Urbino. The study is part of the project ‘Immaginare i Saperi’ (Imagining Knowledge) at the Sapienza – University of Rome.
The research primarily focuses on the perception and representation of time and time-keeping at the court of Urbino, one of the most important courts in Renaissance Italy. The Duke was almost obsessed with time, a theme that had interested him since his youth and, over the years, influenced his moral vision of governance and even his official portraiture.
This study will examine the ego-documents and first-hand sources relating to the Duke, including his manuscript diary, receipts, letters, and inventories of goods and properties. The documents also record the Duke’s rich collection of clocks and scientific/mathematical instruments. Also, in his colossal library, an entire section was dedicated to the science of time measurement, accompanied by volvelles and illustrations.
The analysis of this robust source library material held in the Biblioteca Universitaria Alessandrina, where the Duke’s library has been kept since 1667, is embedded in the studies of the cultural and material history of science.

Patrizia Principi is a PhD student in History of Art at Sapienza - University of Rome and currently an occasional student at the Warburg Institute.
Her research is a part of a broader and fascinating project titled “Immaginare i Saperi” (Imagining Knowledge), conceived and coordinated by Massimo Moretti Professor of Iconography and Iconology at the University La Sapienza, with the collaboration of Dr. Daniela Fugaro, Director of the Biblioteca Universitaria Alessandrina in Rome. This ambitious project aims to reconstruct the imaginary of Francesco Maria II della Rovere (1549-1631), last Duke of Urbino, through his collections, starting from his famous Libraria. This is a very rich book collection founded in 1607 in Casteldurante to house more than 13,000 printed volumes, making up the so called ‘Fondo Antico’ of the Sapienza University Library, where they were transferred in 1667 according to the intentions of Pope Alexander VII.
Specifically, the research here presented is dedicated to the reconstruction of the Duke’s celestial imagery starting from the “Scansia 44” (Shelf 44), also known as “Scansia delle Scienze” (Science Shelf), in order to show the Duke’s obsession with the dimension of Time in all its manifestations. The research therefore deals with the astral and temporal traces identified within the main and useful sources for the study of the Duke’s personality: his manuscript diary and the inventories of his goods and properties.
Francesco Maria II constantly noted the time and the duration of his movements, showing a great attention about each celestial phenomenon.
Moreover, between the 16th and 17th centuries, he lived the most fervent years of the scientific revolution, from the introduction of the Gregorian calendar to the discoveries of Galileo Galilei, with whom his librarians were in contact.
