Due to COVID-19, Industry 4.0 technologies have been deeply integrated into our lives, making it possible to interact, learn, and be productive. The rise of ICT has been established for a lot of years, transforming the educational process of many students with more and more educators applying them in school settings and considering them an essential part of teaching. ICT constantly evolves incorporates and utilizes all the recent and cutting-edge technology to help learners interact and learn in the most engaging and motivating way. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate a very fascinating and promising piece of robotic technology called a drone or unmanned aerial vehicle and how it has been integrated and utilized in the educational process of students to date. In the introduction, the main adoptions of ICT and drones are discussed. In the main part, we explore the possibilities and the applications of drone technology in the educational path from analysis of included studies and research, as well as discussing the students’ and teachers’ perceptions of their use. The results of this study of the application of drones in education show promising effects among students and teachers, but several limitations were identified, making it still difficult to generalize their use in the educational process. Furthermore, a need for a unified framework for reference is needed to be able to accommodate their use in school and academic environments.

The current hierarchical structure of human cognition proposed is indicative of the multi - factorial and multi - layered construct of giftedness and intelligence. All individuals are intellectually endowed, but giftedness is perceived as an achievement in academic and practical intelligence as well as in the manipulation of wisdom-related skills and attitudes, taking into account nonintellective personal characteristics and contextual, sociocultural variables. Therefore, any attempt to measure intelligence should include multiple and diverse assessments comprising various psychological processes taking place in a specific time and place. Metacognitive processes are at the top of the hierarchy of cognition as their significance for one’s quality of life and social progress is immense and their existence signals for a successful person. Moreover, metacognition requires handling for a confluence of knowledge, feelings and skills in a balanced way; this is the point where individuals n...

Several years ago, a characteristic of leadership was the intelligence index, but in recent years this has changed, and emotional intelligence is considered an important parameter for a leader. A leader who shows a high index of emotional intelligence can activate his/her human potential and subsequently others. There is a large body of literature on “what” great leaders should do, but more emphasis needs to be placed on “how” to develop such leaders by focusing on detailed individual behavior change and self-development. The current article aims to investigate the concept of emotional intelligence and describe the levels of the emotional intelligence pyramid model and how these are reflected in the role of leadership. The theoretical model is complemented by a set of metacognitive and metaemotional strategies while emphasizing the role of technologies to provide fertile ground for the implementation of emotional intelligence skills in leadership. The strategies framework provides a...

Empathy and compassion have become a major focus for international research and appear to be important concepts in human development. There are several definitions and models of empathy and compassion available in the literature. Based on theoretical foundations, a new model of empathy – compassion - love is proposed in the present article. This new model emphasizes the evolution of the concept of empathy, which, at higher levels, takes the form of compassion, which will then be transformed into even higher universal love making empathy and compassion a creative and significant process for the gradual evolution of individuals. In addition, emphasis is placed on ICT tools that contribute to the development of empathy and compassion.

The aim of this paper is to provide a different approach in the educational process, introducing “The Theatre of Mind” - a term that we use instead of the term tabletop Role Playing Games (tRPGs)- as a powerful interdisciplinary educational tool with a view to cultivating and developing the emotional intelligence of students. According to this approach, my intention is to indicate how the use of the Theatre of Mind in the educational environment can be an integral asset; not only in teaching school’s subjects (ex. Language, History, Physics etc.) but also in teaching behavior, culture, ideals, and ethical values. Therefore, it aims at student's mental and emotional stimulation targeting the integration of mental and emotional process emphasizing the latter. Thus, the Theatre of Mind may provoke and develop concrete emotions, manners and behavior through simulating real life. It is a method that may provide a unique experience for the student. Concluding, I suggest that the Theat...

Problem solving is the skill that coordinates all the cognitive, metacognitive and behavioral processes taking place when individuals encounter a previously unprecedented situation or difficulty. Metacognitive processes seem to play the most important role for resolving a problematic situation as individuals reflect on their acquired knowledge, skills and experiences, thus become aware of their capabilities and how to regulate them. Therefore, metacognitive awareness is the competence that mostly assists individuals in their attempt to construct new knowledge and reach their goals. Furthermore, individuals’ self-assessment and peer-assessment processes could reveal their level of metacognitive awareness and therefore, by far, their problem solving competency. Consequently, ICTs could capture individuals’ problem solving skills through tracking down and analyzing the latters’ cognitive and metacognitive processes as well as their behavioral patterns. The aforementioned computer-based...

Problem-solving requires creative skills, critical thinking as well the ability to implement ideas and theories in practical ways. Moreover, interactive and self-managed problem-solving experiences promote students’ motivation as expressed through the developmental progression of learners’ metacognitive skills, such as self-monitoring and self-reinforcement. Effective learning based on constructivist didactics, encompassing self-organized learning in combination with active and creative problem-solving in collaborative settings, advances students’ concomitant cognitive and meta-cognitive processes. Hence, students’ co-construction of knowledge embodied in social dynamic learning environments, such as school-based tasks leverage the semantic relationships rising from exercising, verifying and testing of knowledge through information sharing and discussion. Future studies should focus on designing interactive, adaptable, ill-defined, real-world learning environments to elicit students...

Problem-solving skills assessment starts with the imperative that the hypothesized construct of skills, is theoretically sound. Secondly, assessment refers to identifying and recording inductive and deductive types of reasoning as well as divergent and convergent thinking skills. The aforementioned procedures should be measured, independent of specific learning domains or knowledge backgrounds. Future research should be oriented towards the development of a prototype set of tasks that would embed problem-solving skills in different content and context areas and that would act as a model for implementation in online large-scale assessments. Furthermore, the classroom provides an environment amenable to collaborative problem solving, in which capturing the progress of students’ both social and cognitive processes through identifying the exchange of implicit and explicit types of information, remains to be sufficiently addressed. Effective collaborative problem-solving assessment is re...

Mobile phones hold a rather permeating role in our lives. Their portability and ease of use have turned them to indispensable parts of our everyday activities, since they are steadily connected to the internet, providing a wide range of applications at the same time. However, there has been little research so far, on the way mobile technology habits could be related to alterations in our cognitive functioning. The review presented in this paper, introduces findings of the last decade on the field of cognitive flexibility, some of which, tend to be contradictory at times. Cognitive flexibility is presented through the prism of attention-switching, task–switching and in close relation to working memory and inhibitory control, functions which have been proved to be interrelated. Moving a step forward, an attempt was made to present a more contemporary approach towards cognitive flexibility and the ways it is affected by mobile and advanced information and communication technologies.

Autism Spectrum Disorders is a group of lifelong disabilities that affect people's communication and underlying social messages. The state of the art is an indication of how technology, and in particular robotics, can offer promising tools to enhance research and treatment in ASD. This review represents an attempt to investigate how robot-assistive therapy strategies help children with autism increase social interaction and to imitate, recognize and express feelings. One of the major questions of this paper was if the robots appear to be effective means in assistive therapies. The research team of this paper concluded that robots are discovered to be a predictable and secure environment for ASD children and to be quite efficient in the intervention process. In addition to the above-mentioned, this project also broaches ethical issues that should be taken into consideration by the researchers and therapists during human-robot interplay.

Due to the increasing demands of highly skilled employees on ICT, European industries could face shortage of employees in the ICT sector. In the existing problem of lack of ICT executives in the European labour market it is added the problem of low representation of women in jobs related to ICT. In Greece this problem is even more intense as a result of the economic conditions in the last six years. Our online research for the impact of ICT on Greek women’s employability and entrepreneurship revealed that women overwhelmingly recognize that the field of digital entrepreneurship is one of the most important indicators of success in the 21st century economy, as well as that there are large gaps and mismatches between the supply and demand for ICT skills. Women believe that they are under-represented in the ICT sector and there is a gender-based gap in both ICT professionals and new occupations associated with new communication technologies. The problem of under-...

In recent years there has been a growing interest in people on the autism spectrum emotional intelligence, an area in which people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) show a deficit. The aim of this work is through a literature review of the research a) to illustrate the emotional development and education of individuals on the spectrum and b) to present the findings of eye-tracking, neuro-imaging, and electro-physiological studies in individuals with ASD because they allow researchers, among other things, to discover the mechanisms and how they affect emotion. (c) Raise questions about the development of educational methods aimed at enhancing the emotional development of individuals on the autism spectrum and subsequently the development of social skills.

ABSTRACT Athanasios Drigas, Eleni Ioannidou Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has developed computer tools for carrying out a number of tasks, simulating the intelligent way of problem solving by humans. AI techniques have also been identified as one of the most valuable applications in the field of special educational needs (SEN). The goal of these tools is to enhance the way children interact with their environment to promote learning and to enrich their daily life. Due to the implicit characteristics of special educational needs, the diagnosis has been an issue of major importance. At the same time intervention strategies need to be highly individualized to be effective. In this report we introduce some of the most representative studies over the last decade (2001–2010), which use AI methods in making accurate diagnosis and prompt intervention action. Keywords: artificial intelligence; special educational needs; diagnosis; intervention

Latest trends in learning technologies verify of the fact that they are indispensable for students’ cognitive improvement. ICTs in coordination with a concrete pedagogical framework may provide students and teachers flexible, engaging, cost-effective and above all, personalized learning experiences, which focus on the adoption of the 21 century cognitive skills into the actual learning process. Such higher order thinking skills (HOTS) entail critical thinking, problem solving, independent inquiry, creativity, communication, collaboration, digital literacy. Therefore, technologically-supported educational environments aim at self-regulated and inquisitive, constructivist, knowledge building rather than knowledge accumulation.

Recent development in the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) at the field of special education is thought significant. ICT nowadays is recognized as a tool that can foster the knowledge and the experiences in the areas of needs it serves as it is considered significant for teaching and learning process. In the last decade, a number of studies have demonstrated the benefits of various forms of ICTs tools for children with attention difficulties and hyperactivity disorders (ADHD). These tools can be employed to facilitate and train young learners, as well as can help them to increase their quality of life and functional independence. In this paper we present a brief review of the most representative research papers for computer-based applications for diagnosis and intervention purposes included the mobile learning and social media for technology enhanced learning for people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

It is a well-known fact that despite the rapid growth of technology over the past years, not all people have equal access to information and knowledge. Senior citizens are one major example of people being excluded from the abundance of services that technology has to offer nowadays, which results in feelings of inactiveness, loneliness and isolation. This paper presents a European Project in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme entitled “Grandparents and Grandchildren Keep In Touch” (GRANKIT), which attempted to bridge the gap between senior citizens, their acquisition of basic ICTs skills and ultimately their access to information, knowledge and communication tools. The main aim of the GRANKIT project was to promote active citizenship regardless of age and to explore the relationship of the first and third generation by bringing together senior citizens (grandparents) with their grandchildren through the provision of basic ICT learning courses.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex neurological disorder with a lack of an official scientific understanding of its genetic nature and the potential causes. However, there are practical research data that points to certain directions. In this paper, we examine the possible external causes of the disorder and specifically ones whose influence is related to pregnancy and (early) childhood years. Children born prematurely and/or with low birth weight are at high risk of developing ADHD. Maternal smoking, alcohol consumption and psychological disorders during pregnancy were proven to play a part as well. Some special social and economic situations raised the risk of appearance in the minors experiencing them. Electronics are a factor of distraction to children and were found to exacerbate symptoms. Most importantly, parenting choices can be determinant for a child with the disorder. A solution often proposed for symptoms of this nature is medication. Nonetheles...

Mathematical achievement during the first years of primary school seems to be a reliable predictor of students’ later performance. In addition, cognitive, metacognitive, and psychological parameters are considered to be factors related to mathematical achievement. However, in the Greek educational system, there is a shortage of valid and reliable tools for the assessment of mathematics difficulties and as a consequence, identification of children with these difficulties does not take place before the last years of primary school. This study aims to investigate the relationship between working memory, sustained attention, executive functions, and math anxiety with mathematical achievement in 2nd and 3rd graders. The design of the study was based on the parameters of mathematics difficulties, as they arise from the literature review. Ninety-one Year 2 and Year 3 primary school students (mean age 8.06 years) from three public schools situated in Attica, Greece participated in the study...

Motivation, affect and cognition are interrelated. However, the control of attentional deployment and more specifically, attempting to provide a more complete account of the interactions between the dorsal and ventral processing streams is still a challenge. The interaction between overt and covert attention is particularly important for models concerned with visual search. Further modeling of such interactions can assist to scrutinize many mechanisms, such as saccadic suppression, dynamic remapping of the saliency map and inhibition of return, covert pre-selection of targets for overt saccades and online understanding of complex visual scenes.

Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) is a specific learning disability of childhood, which is mainly related to problems in arithmetic skills and numerosity. It is estimated that the prevalence of dyscalculia range between 3 and 6 % of the world population. DD is a cognitive disorder, observed during the development of the individual. Mathematical achievement of children with DD fall far short of their mental capacity. In this study we present an approach to genetic, neurological and environmental factors associated with DD, as well as the computerized screening tools that have been developed and used so far, according to the literature review of the past two decades.

Perception as a thought process has been one of the most popular fields of study and therefore much has been stated about it. Perhaps the most fundamental cognitive function is perception, in the sense that, is one of the basic elements that constitute the structure of mental states and activities. This chart review examines the extent of the interaction of ICTs with special needs and brain perception itself. For this scope a thorough search and comprehensive review of numerous articles was conducted with respect to the aforementioned aspects in order to survey the findings. The various tests of perception such as n-back, illusions and simulation tests … are representative examples of the knowledge acquired through this study regarding the current trend of research. Six different approaches of perception have been discussed over the past century. In that respect the questions which concern us at least most of all are, firstly, which are the types of perceptual phenomena that we use ...

Information Society aims to promote innovation in the context of governmental and enterprise information systems and participation of the majority of the general population. An important prerequisite for the penetration and widespread use of Information Society technologies is to enhance the perception of security that these technologies offer without making them inaccessible to users with limited computational resources. In this paper a new algorithm for the software implementation of modular multiplication is proposed, which uses pre-computations with a constant modulus to reduce the computational load imposed upon the processor. The developed modular multiplication algorithm 182 Accessible Secure Information Society Applications … provides faster execution on low complexity hardware in comparison with the existing algorithms and is oriented towards the variable value of the modulus, especially with the software implementation on micro controllers and smart cards whose architectur...

The term “students with special needs”, “disabled” or “impaired students” is used to describe some students who have real, persistent, and substantial individual differences and educational needs that regular education has been unable to accommodate. These individual differences vary, from medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, to dyslexia, to pervasive and chronic maladaptive patterns of behaviour. These same students will and should not be considered disabled or impaired once they leave school. Nonetheless, their specialized learning needs are intense and legitimate because students with learning disabilities have significant difficulty acquiring and retaining math and other skills. ICTS are here to play an important role, offering the educators a valuable set of tools to cope with these difficulties. A number of factors are significant to the poor math performance of these students. In this review article we discuss these factors, the contribution of ICTS and make recommendat...

A great number of articles have been written about English language teaching and the use of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) during the last decade, achieving a laudable outcome. Recent literature has shown that the use of ICTs in the language classroom has a lot to offer to both learners and teachers, with learners enhancing their vocabulary, improving their reading and speaking skills, and with teachers having to hold a double role; the role of the educator and that of the facilitator, while having to cope with complex situations which include lack of training or lack of equipment in the language classroom. In this paper we shall review and present some representative studies on this field during the last decade.

This paper presents modelling results for H.26x video traffic generated by popular videoconference software applications. The analysis of videoconference data, that were measured during realistic point-point videoconference sessions, led us to the general conclusion that the traffic can be distinguished into two categories: unconstrained and constrained. In the unconstrained traffic, there is a direct relation between the encoder and the form of the frequency histogram of the frame-size sequence. Moreover, for this type of traffic, strong correlations between successive video frames can be found. On the other hand, where bandwidth constraints are imposed during the encoding process, the generated traffic appears to exhibit similar characteristics for all the examined encoders with the very low autocorrelation values being the most notable one. On the basis of these results, this study proposes methods to calculate the parameters of a widely adopted autoregressive model for both type...

Sign language videoconference traces (H.261 and H.263 encoded) gathered during realistic multipoint IP sessions (switched and continuous presence) between Greek signers are statistically analyzed using the models proposed in our previous study (1). Comparing our analytical results against a simulation using actual sign language videoconference data, it is proven that the application of our statistical models into the C-DAR(1) model (5) is a conservative solution in all experimental cases. It must be noted that the focus of the current manuscript is the performance analysis of sign language videoconference traffic as well as the contribution of results for further use in theoretical studies concerning videoconferencing for deaf people.

Phonological awareness is highlighted as a main ability that predicts later reading skills. Here are presented several studies that display computer games, programs and applications by which teachers can intervene to boost phonological awareness and help preventing RD or dyslexia from an early age. Most studies focus in preschool age, although dyslexia in kindergarten is a field that has not been investigated thoroughly, and are certainly a precursor for studies to follow.

It is a well-known fact that despite the rapid growth of technology over the past years, not all people have equal access to information and knowledge. Senior citizens are one major example of people being excluded from the abundance of services that technology has to offer nowadays, which results in feelings of inactiveness, loneliness and isolation. This paper presents a European Project in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme entitled " Grandparents and Grandchildren Keep In Touch " (GRANKIT), which attempted to bridge the gap between senior citizens, their acquisition of basic ICTs skills and ultimately their access to information, knowledge and communication tools. The main aim of the GRANKIT project was to promote active citizenship regardless of age and to explore the relationship of the first and third generation by bringing together senior citizens (grandparents) with their grandchildren through the provision of basic ICT learning courses.

!Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) is a specific learning disability of childhood, which is mainly related to problems in arithmetic skills and numerosity.

ICTs have become a strong ally in strengthening
individuals healthy lifestyle, taking into account nutrition
intake and physical activity levels. Nutrition applications
provide the means for automatic dietary intake
and energy expenditure measurements as well as personalised

targeted applications should be appealing and intriguing,
as they apply to many people with a variety of needs for a
long period of time. Therefore, they should be efficient,
accurate and functional. It is a fact that nutrition applications
are by all means a cost-effective innovation by

—Recent development in special education includes the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to assist students during their lifetime. ICT is now also recognized as a tool which ensures access to knowledge and learning resources. In this paper we present an overview of the most representative studies of the last decade (2001-2010) which deal with the two important issues in the field of special education, diagnosis and intervention. One important advantage of these tools is that they can be employed by teachers and parents as well, to adapt education to the needs and abilities of pupils. The studies chosen will be classified according to the areas of needs they serve.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has developed computer tools for carrying out a number of tasks, simulating the intelligent way of problem solving by humans.

Some new ideas are presented for the improvement of the known QKD protocols and their application to an Internet environment. The full automatization of a technological setup is considered, as a result of the property of most basic QKD protocols to have the appearance of step by step algorithmic procedures and thus to offer themselves to materialization as computer code applications. This is the basis for the creation of a computer network connecting various users to be developed, working as an expert system and making decisions on the best strategy to recognize and counter especially dangerous eavesdropper attacks. The use of robotic technology, knowledge based simulation of the most dangerous and complicated attacks, game theory and neuronal networks to make these decisions, permits the system to adapt its behavior in the face of adverse situations. An elementary example of adaptivity of QKD protocols, by the use of game theory, is given.

This paper presents a learning management system (LMS) which offers Greek Sign Language videos in correspondence to every text in the learning environment. The system is designed notably for deaf adults for the purpose of their lifelong vocational and educational training. In the LMS, the special needs of deaf learners are satisfied, as e.g. bilingual information (text and sign language), high level of visualization, interactive and explorative learning, and the possibility of learning in peer groups via video conferencing. In this environment, for the first time, Greek signers are able to learn in their own language, the sign language.

The Internet has been considered a new alternative for teaching-learning processes; vocational assessment; counseling and orientation (virtual psychological consultation); and intervention focused on specific health-related problems. The experiences of on-line psychological services and their conclusions constitute a valuable body of knowledge for the e-learners and interested users of the psychology science. However, such knowledge is widespread in the World Wide Web and consequently hardly accessed by the end-users. In this paper, an e-course platform is presented that serves the delivery of such knowledge via instructional-informative and communication web tools.

Sign language videoconference traces (H.261 and H.263 encoded) gathered during realistic multipoint IP sessions (switched and continuous presence) between Greek signers are statistically analyzed using the models proposed in our previous study [1]. Comparing our analytical results against a simulation using actual sign language videoconference data, it is proven that the application of our statistical models into the C-DAR(1) model [5] is a conservative solution in all experimental cases. It must be noted that the focus of the current manuscript is the performance analysis of sign language videoconference traffic as well as the contribution of results for further use in theoretical studies concerning videoconferencing for deaf people.

is paper presents modelling results for H.26x video traffic generated by popular videoconference soware applications. e analysis of videoconference data, that were measured during realistic point-point videoconference sessions, led us to the general conclusion that the traffic can be distinguished into two categories: unconstrained and constrained. On the basis of these results, this study proposes methods to calculate the parameters of a widely adopted autoregressive model for both types of traffic.

The incorporation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in activities and services such as education, culture and medicine constitutes a contemporary reality and governmental activities and services could not be an exception. Apart from expanded citizen services, e-government also offers a complete reshuffle of public organizations and their services through the efficient use of Internet services. This article presents an e-government platform which supports easy public access to governmental information, e-transactions between citizens and public organizations through the acceptance of e-documents submissions (e-applications and e-petitions) and their management through the e-protocol and finally, electronic delivery of a requested document. In addition, a model Greek e-government web portal is presented, which supports the Government to Citizen (G2C) model, which focuses on governmental information dissemination, which includes among others information about ministries, social services, and city news and information.

In modern society where digital technology prevails, the combination of Information and Communication technology (ICT) and the various human activities created the term e-services. This paper presents an e-culture services portal, focusing on e-culture applications like e-literature, e-gallery and music servers. The user-visitor has the opportunity to navigate through its pages which contain a large amount of information about Greek literature, galleries and music in the form of text, images and sound. Although it started as an early e-culture application, today it has been updated with new web-based technologies, in order to be accessible by people with visual disabilities, using dynamical techniques for content management. Its goals are mainly to make the so-called " Information for All " scheme a palpable reality and secondly to spread the aforementioned Greek cultural heritage aspects to a global level.

Content analysis technologies give more and more emphasis on multimedia semantics. However most watermarking systems are frame-oriented and do not focus on the protection of semantic regions. As a result, they fail to protect semantic content, especially in case of the copy-paste attack. In this framework, a novel unsupervised semantic region watermark encoding scheme is proposed. The proposed scheme is applied to real and artwork human objects, localized by two different face and body detection methods. Next, an invariant method is designed, based on Hu moments, for properly encoding the watermark information into each semantic region, using a chaotic pseudo-random number generator. Finally, experiments are carried out, to illustrate the advantages of the proposed scheme, such as: (a) robustness to RST, copy-paste and other attacks, and (b) low overhead transmission.

The teaching of the English language as a second language to deaf and hearing impaired individuals, whose mother language is the sign language, through the prism of the project 'Dedalos', is the main topic of this article. More particularly, a special e-learning platform was developed, which incorporated special pedagogic methods of distant linguistic training as well as innovative and high-quality educational e-content, suitably adapted to the needs of hearing impaired people through the use of contemporary animation and digital video technologies. In addition, audits and evaluation tests were incorporated within the platform, in order to assess and evaluate the linguistic skills of the hearing impaired students and the educational e-content was divided into various levels according to the educational level of each e-student. Both the evaluation process and the setting of the e-content to the appropriate level are achieved through the use of an intelligent taxonomy system.

SOM O.D.I.S.S.E.A.S is an intelligent searching tool using the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm, as a prototype e-content retrieval tool. The proposed searching tool has the ability to adjust and scale into any e-learning system that requires concept-based queries. In the proposed methodology, maps are used for the automatic replacement of the unstructured, the half structured and the multidimensional data of text, in a way that similar entries in the map are represented near between them. The performance and the functionality of the document organization, and the retrieval tool employing the SOM architecture, are also presented. Furthermore, experiments were performed to test the time performance of a learning algorithm used for the direct creation of teams of terms and texts enabling efficient searching and retrieval of the documents.

The modeling of diagnostic systems of taxonomies using fuzzy logic is presented in this paper. Specifically the taxonomies system solo is studied, which that can be applied in a wide range of fields of diagnostic science. The intelligent system that is developed based on the presented modeling can make easier the use of diagnostic systems in education since the test correction is extremely hard and demands experts that are not always available. Addifionally, the rate of the extraction of results is a reason for using and distributing such tools (diagnostic systems) in the educational process. It is very useful for e-leaming systems [1], [2], and distance diagnostics systems.

E-activities are considered a very powerful tool for the strengthening of enterprises and enterprising in general. They include among others, e-leaming, e-govemment, e-conmierce and e-business, which are the main e-activities that directly interest the enterprises. This article presents and describes a compound e-govemment envirormient-application that is addressed to enterprises, which incorporates e-leaming and training activities within the enterprises on issues covering ICTs and e-activities. Moreover, particular emphasis is given to the exploitation of the Intemet technologies and e-commerce from the enterprises in order to exploit the various forms of e-commerce and e-promotion of their products. For example through B2B transactions (Business to Business), there is the potential of reducing the operational expenses for the procurement cycle for their products. Furthermore, through B2C transactions (Business to Consumer), there is the potential to promote worldwide the products and services of the SMEs and finally, through e-advertisement there is the opportunity to exploit the Intemet as a promotion medium for the activities of the SMEs. The environment covers all the aforementioned e-services and offers educational e-content for them. Finally, this article presents the electronic infrastructure that was developed in the framework of a relevant European project (Leonardo Da Vinci) for the supporting of e-activities in the field of enterprising and SMEs.

—This paper presents an electronic environment which supports activities of e-learning, as well as activities of e-psychology. This e-environment supports synchronous and asynchronous activities of teaching and learning through communicative and informative tools and services. These " tools and services " are constructed in a powerful modular environment which can be adjusted and modulated to support different scenarios – policies of teaching, learning and manipulating the knowledge circle, in an electronic way. On the other hand, the ideas of learning, of transferring the knowledge, of analyzing the end user (learner) needs, of analyzing the status and end user development, on supporting synchronous and asynchronous communication, between the learner and teacher – professor parts, are also included in the e-psychology circle and are procedures of it. As a result the e-learning and the e-psychological actions, like psychological support and consultation, are parallelized, and can be both supported by the aforementioned e-environment.

This manuscript is a contribution on the modeling of H.263 traffic in multipoint videoconference sessions over IP Networks. Our study includes analysis and modeling assessment of extensive data gathered during realistic videoconference sessions between commercial H.263-compliant terminal clients (with different videoconference software packages installed). All terminal clients were communicating through a Multipoint Control Unit (software or hardware MCU) at 'switched presence' mode and for comparative purposes the same typical videoconference content (a person speaking, with mild movement and occasional zoom/span) was used. The analysis of the H.263 data at the frame level suggests that the traffic from the different terminals to the MCU can be represented by a stationary stochastic process with an AutoCorrelation Function (ACF) rapidly decaying to zero and a Gamma formed marginal frame-size Probability Distribution Function (PDF). An accurate analysis of the H.263 traffic from all terminals (with the same visual content and different videoconference software used) shows indicative differences in the ACF and PDF of different terminals' traffic and insights that no generic traffic model can be applied for all cases. Aiming at a realistic, reusable and simple H.263 traffic model, conservative enough for queueing analysis and network estimation, this study discusses methods for calculating the appropriate model parameters from the observed traffic data and proposes a new technique for unconventional fitting of the PDF. The presented modeling and queueing results indicate the suitability of the proposed models for H.263 traffic modeling in IP networks.

This paper presents an expert system for evaluation of the unemployed at certain offered posts. The expert application uses Neuro-Fuzzy techniques for analyzing a corporate database of unemployed and enterprises profile data. The process of matching an unemployed with an offered job is performed through a Sugeno type Neuro-Fuzzy inference system. Large training sets of old historical records of unemployed (belonging to the same social class), rejected or approved at several posts, (provided by the Greek General Secretariat of Social Training) were used to define the weights of the system parameters. New instances of rejected or approved cases arriving become part of the training set. Retraining is performed after a standard amount of new cases available. The system output is a measure of the unemployed suitability for the certain job (evaluation mark).

The paper contributes results on the modeling of videoconferencing traffic over IP networks. The study is based on extensive data, gathered by tracing the actual packet exchange during a comprehensive set of realistic teleconferencing sessions over an asymmetric platform, in which commercial H.261-compliant terminal clients were communicating through a Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) at 'continuous presence' mode. Analysis of the data suggests that the video traffic from the client terminals can always be represented at the frame level as a stationary stochastic process with an autocorrelation function of exponentially fast decay and a marginal frame size distribution of approximately Gamma form. The video traffic from the MCU to the clients is again stationary and with exponentially decaying correlations, while the corresponding marginal frame-size PDF has the form of an appropriately weighted sum of Gamma components, the number of terms in the sum always being equal to the number of conferring terminals. The paper discusses methods for correctly matching the parameters of the modeling components to the data and for combining these components into complete traffic models that have been proposed in the literature.

ABSTRACT This paper is a review on Business to Consumer (B2C) electronic commerce (e-commerce) and it studies its evolution over the last decade. The Internet characteristics that affect B2C are the Internet growth, which at first includes the number of Internet users and secondly, the infrastructure, which is basically the quality and speed of the lines. Moreover, the way the Internet growth has affected the B2C e-commerce growth over the last ten years is studied in three major countries-areas. The USA because it is an Internet developed country with vast e-commerce sales, China because it is a rapidly developing Internet country with a large number of users and fast e-commerce activity growth in the last decade and finally, the European Union, because of its diversity in Internet and e-commerce growth. This paper focuses on the aforementioned three geographic areas and extracts its conclusions from the observations of B2C behavior growth in these areas.

The presented project aims at the examination of the relation of the deaf and hard of hearing people with the new technologies in Greece. The research was conducted through the construction and delivery of an online questionnaire to the members of two deaf organisations in Athens and refers to the motives, for the use of the internet services by deaf people. Particularly, the subject of this project is the comprehension of the needs and wishes of the deaf people regarding the new technologies capabilities as a means of information and communication and whether these capabilities contribute to the active social and economical participation of the people with hearing impairment. Hypotheses and questions are enounced, the survey tool is described as the survey progresses and finally the results of the survey are discussed. This discussion will consist of the basis for the formulation of psychological extensions and technological applications regarding the use of the internet capabilities by people with hearing impairment.

The developed modular multiplication algorithm provides faster execution on low complexity hardware in comparison with the existing algorithms and is oriented towards the variable value of the modulus, especially with the software implementation on micro controllers and smart cards whose architectures include a small number of bits. The use of the new algorithm in Information Society applications that demand security is investigated. Such applications include e-Government, e-Banking, e-Commerce etc. The algorithm is shown to be adequate both for the applications for which it was originally intended, as well as for applications that are much more demanding in the level of security they require, such as military applications.

ABSTRACTNew economy is a term, describing something profoundly different from the typical postwar business cycle. For this weird and unprecedented economical entity, there are many approximations for an explanation.
Innovation and e-services, beyond their identity, as the major pillars, of information and knowledge society, which has transformed our social and individual lives,  constitute the two most competitive causes of the novel phenomenon of new economy.
E-services, that span from e-learning to e-commerce, from e-culture to e-health, and from e-government to e-democracy, comprise the basic tools to transform the structure of the society, to a more effective, fair, and productive organization in to the era of information and knowledge society.
E-services and innovation are included in the main kernel of EU group of policies known as e-Europe. Under this politic umbrella, the EU’s endeavor is covered, targeting, beyond of ICT infrastructures development, to fight also the so called, EU’s paradoxes: The large production of knowledge and innovation, in contrast to the little economical exploitation of  this knowledge and innovation, on one hand and on the other hand the huge amount of information holding in contrast to the negative network information turnover.
Beyond and over all the previously mentioned, new economy is a way for increasing profits of decreased investments, and the instruments for this are innovation and e-services.

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this paper is to present the project research, development, installation and finally the function of a total system of tele-education and tele- presentation by means of the techniques of videoconference of the Internet which are able to function through narrow band transition. Moreover, the project aims at the application of its results into the organizations, which are representatives of the Greek economy such as the mass media. The development of the general system is based upon the World Wide Web (WWW), assuring the friendly environment, the existent familiarity of the users and indisputably the wider spread of it considering the fact that it will run under services of the Internet. The realization of the project is based on the philosophy of the development of Teleconference Centers, which work simultaneously as virtual and teaching classrooms that support interactive flow of information in the form of multimedia in real time or on demand. In terms of the accomplishment of a total educational system, it is highly recommended to develop new services and tools through Internet (like joint editor, on line syllabus) and multimedia databases of multiple themes as well as smart gadgets of search (intelligent systems). The use of the above means provide a proper educational environment which include the whole educational procedure, that means the production, preparation and completion of the lesson via the Internet .The additional support of the students is also included. Finally, it would be a subjective way of evaluation of the system ODISEAS its comparison with the other similar commerce systems of World Market.

Today all around the world are taking place efforts for the preservation of antique documents and valuable manuscripts, which constitute a part of our vast artistic and cultural heritage. Could such an effort contribute to the preservation of manuscripts and simultaneously be used for educational purposes? That is the goal of the e-learning system that is presented in this paper. The content of this e-learning system is a meeting point of the past and the future, providing historic content, taking advantage of the new technologies with an original and interactive educational way. The system aims to provide fundamental knowledge to scholars in the Greek Paleography of the Byzantine era, through the processed presentation of authentic manuscripts taken from “The Book of Jove”, and interactive and multiform-leveled lessons.

ABSTRACT This chapter discusses the e-learning methods that were used within the Dedalos project for the teaching of English (as a second language) to deaf and hearing impaired people through the use of Sign Language. Firstly, special educational e-content was developed using modern digital and animation technologies, which was divided into educational levels in accordance to the special needs of the deaf and hearing impaired students. In addition, this special educational content was embedded in a newly developed e-learning environment aiming at the distance training of the aforementioned target group. Apart from the educational material, special evaluation tests were embedded in the e-learning environment towards the assessment and evaluation of the skills of the students. Finally, an intelligent taxonomy system was used for setting the e-content to the right level as well as for the realization of the evaluation process. The procedure can be used in tertiary education. http://www.igi-global.com/chapter/learning-fuzzy-methods-sign-language/78441

ABSTRACT In Greece, the training system and education can be adapted to distance lifelong e-learning and the teachers, the society and the economy can be benefited via the introduction and training of in-service teachers in (a) the Video Conferencing (VC) technology and mode of distant training, granted that VC is put into a learning framework, and (b) Knowledge Management (KM) methodology, through lectures and seminars. Incidentally, VC technology and KM methodology can be integrated into in-service teacher distance lifelong training and development, and to this end, an example, a hybrid model, of the manner VC technology and KM methodology can be integrated into in-service teacher distance lifelong training and development, that is, a microteaching session via VC and KM, which is advisable for Greek teachers of all specialisations in Greece or abroad, is given. http://www.igi-global.com/article/advanced-learning-services-teachers/75144  International Journal of Knowledge Society Research, 3(4), 85-96, October-December 2012 85

ABSTRACT E-culture is the combination of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) with traditional culture. Cultural heritage reveals elements of the past, which renders the occupation with it by contemporary societies, an absolute necessity. This paper aims to present a thorough review of e-culture, its methods and its applications in recent years. First, it focuses on the alternative choice of creating virtual museums in order to improve traditional museums' services through an attractive way to the visitor. Moreover, it discusses the significance of cultural digitization analysing the methods of digitization for both monuments and objects. Finally, it mentions the potential of numerous existing guide applications, which can be installed on cell phones and whose aim is to facilitate the navigation of visitors at archaeological sites and museums, as well as the potential of robots, which guide visitors to museums in an interactive way.

ABSTRACT This article proposes an approach that accelerates the realization of user identification schemes that follow the principle of zero knowledge. The proposed approach is based on using finite field arithmetic to replace the usual modular arithmetic approaches. The application of this efficient method that was developed using Galois Fields, renders feasible an exponential reduction of the computation time required for classical zero knowledge authentication methods, such as FFSIS, Schnorr and Guillou & Quisquater. Modifications of the relevant schemes are presented that use Galois Field multiplication operations. It is shown, both theoretically and experimentally that the proposed procedure attains a per order acceleration of the execution time required for the user authentication by 2-3 orders of magnitude, via a hardware implementation.

This paper presents the DVB-S satellite network infrastructure that achieves the broadcast of cultural events in real time through a satellite network, in the Hellenic area. In addition, the realization and usage of such a satellite network infrastructure is described, as well as how the interconnection of remote parts within the country is feasible. Hence, this paper distinguishes not only the usage of a digital satellite network platform for the provision of television programs but also as a Pan-Hellenic coverage network infrastructure. The satellite network comprises one transmission base station, one mobile transmission station and minimum ten pilot receiver stations as well as the satellite itself. Finally, the real time broadcast of cultural events is achieved using four synchronous alternative means of video broadcasting, which are divided into real time and non real time and will be discussed in detail throughout the paper.

Apart from many characteristics of a nation such as its history, its tradition and customs, the most distinctive one is its cultural heritage. This paper presents an e-culture portal which gives to a user-visitor the potential to navigate through numerous museums and galleries around Greece and Cyprus, containing a large amount of information and images concerning them. Although it started as an early e-culture application, today it has been updated with modern web-based technologies, in order to be accessible by people with visual disabilities, by simultaneously adding new features. Its main goals are firstly to make the so-called "Information for All" scheme a palpable reality and secondly to spread the Greek civilization to a global level.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has developed computer tools for carrying out a number of tasks, simulating the intelligent way of problem solving by humans.

—A great number of articles have been written about English language teaching and the use of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) during the last decade, achieving a laudable outcome.

—The term " students with special needs " , " disabled " or " impaired students " is used to describe some students who have real, persistent, and substantial individual differences and educational needs that regular education has been unable to accommodate. In this review article we discuss these factors, the contribution of ICTS and make recommendations for a better math performance.

—ICTs have become a strong ally in strengthening individuals' healthy lifestyle, taking into account nutrition intake and physical activity levels. Nutrition applications provide the means for automatic dietary intake and energy expenditure measurements as well as person-alised counselling and educational services. Behaviour targeted applications should be appealing and intriguing, as they apply to many people with a variety of needs for a long period of time. Therefore, they should be efficient, accurate and functional. It is a fact that nutrition applications are by all means a cost-effective innovation by reducing the chasm between the individuals in need for constant interaction and their caregivers.

—Cognitive training and assessment refers to ICTs and their relation with students, students with learning disabilities and adults with dementia. This article revises on contemporary research concerning ICTs effectiveness on the training and assessment of attention, memory and executive control functions. Artificial intelligence seems to hold a significant role in the field of cognitive training and rehabilitation as its adaptability and interactivity, enhance users' motivation and involvement. Moreover, artificial intelligence in combination with other applications provides the means for holistic and cost-effective cognitive interventions through its integrative information processes. Evidently, educators and therapists should advocate of improvements in the engineering features of the applications as well as they should, themselves, expand the implementation of the aforementioned technological innovations in favour of the users' cognition.
