WHAT IS CELL?
Cell is the structural and functional unit of all organisms and
is now called unit of life.
The term cell (Gr., Kytos, Cell + L., cella, hollow cell)
was used by Robert Hooke in 1665. He observed cells in a
piece of cork under a primitive microscope. In 1674, Anton
von Leeuwenhoek discovered free cell like bacteria etc.
Jacob Schleiden and T. Schwan, in 1839 established the cell
theory. In 1839, J.E. Purkinje named the fluid content of the
cell as protoplasm. In 1892, O. Hertwig proposed that cell
is a mass of protoplasm. The term protoplasm was given by
purkinije and von Mohl in 1839 found in plant cells.
Waldeyer in 1890 described the precise division of the
chromosomes.
STRUCTURE OF A CELL
Each cell has a outer plasma membrane that surrounds the
cytoplasm in which nucleus is present. A generalized
cell can can be differentiated into three major regions:
1. Plasma membrane
2. Cytoplasm bearing cell organelles
3. Nucleus

ANIMAL CELL
STRUCTURES
 Plasma Membrane: It is the outer living boundary of the cell. This
is also called cell membrane or plasma lemma. In most plant cells,
there is a strong wall that protects membrane is called Cell wall.
 Cytoplasm: The cytoplasm of cell lies outside nucleus and inside
membrane. Cytosol is liquid, in which all cell organelles are found.
Cell organelles: Plastids Ribosomes
Mitochondria Lysosomes
Vacuoles Peroxisomes
Endoplasmic Reticulum Centrosome
Golgi Apparatus
 Nucleus: It is spherical in shape and is generally present in the center
of the cell. Its role is to synthesize and to assemble RNA (ribonucleic
acid) molecules. Chrosomes are thread-like dark stained in the
nucleoplasm of nucleus and discovered by W. Waldeyer in 1888.
