The book attempts to present –for the first time in the international bibliography– a detailed description of the historical life of Abydos (Άβυδος) of Hellespont (Ελλήσποντος, Δαρδανέλλια); the latter was an important ancient and medieval Greek city, situated on the Asiatic shore of Dardanelles, at the once narrowest part of the local Straits (usually named "Stenon of Abydos") and in the surrounding area of the promontory of Nara (an Ottoman and modern Turkish naval base, where free access is prohibited). The monograph also detects the relations between Abydos and other known settlements in the wider region of northwestern Asia Minor (Troad, Hellespont, Mysia, Hellespontine Phrygia).
Αbydos was founded predominantly as a colony of Miletus (ca. 680-650 BC) and had a continuous historical life that lasted about 2.000 years (mid. 7th c. BC - early 14th c. AD). The prosperous ancient city minted various coins between 6th c. BC - 3rd c. AD. Its lively port was used for centuries as a key point for the passage from Europe to Asia and the cruise from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea (and vice versa) as well as a major customs station ("telonion Abydou" during the Roman imperial years, "demosion teloneion" or "kommerkion" or "dekateuterion Abydou" during the medieval period of the city). Byzantine Abydos was also an important administrative center, a military and naval base and an ecclesiastical seat (bishopric and later metropolis).
However, the long and turbulent history of Abydos and its region is virtually unknown in modern years, despite the fact that the city's reputation was particularly widespread during ancient and medieval times in the Mediterranean world. Moreover, for many reasons noted in the book, the settlement does not exist archaeologically in the last two centuries. In short, Abydos constitutes a very interesting case of a virtually lost city during the modern times.
For various reasons, also described in the book, the importance of Abydos had declined during the 13th c. AD and the city was finally abandoned by its population in the early 14th c. AD., mainly because of the Turkish threat in the area. From mid. 15th c. AD the new city of Çanakkale was established gradually (initially named as Kale-i Sultaniye) 5-6 km to the south of Abydos. The ruins of the abandoned urban area of the latter have been systematically pillaged -mainly for construction and other purposes- between the 14th - early 19th c. AD.
For the reconstruction of the long historical life of Abydos (mid. 7th c. BC - early 14th c. AD) and an in-depth analysis of its numerous and largely unknown institutions, the study relies though on the information providing by the written (ancient and medieval) texts but also on the scarce and dispersed epigraphic and the much richer numismatic (the city minted coins between 6th c. BC - 3rd c. AD) and sigillographic data and other archaeological findings regarding (or deriving from) the city. It also takes into account all the contemporary related publications.

This extensive book (2 volumes, 134 pages of sources and modern bibliography, 716 pages of main text, prosopographical lists and index, 4046 references) -based on the research of my PhD thesis- examines in depth the administrative and military organization of the Anatolian / Asiatic regions of the Byzantine Empire (i.e. Eastern border and Central Asia Minor) during the 11th century AD.
Moreover, it describes in detail the political and military developments by region.
Finally, it attempts to trace and evaluate the most important causes that led to the collapse of Byzantine sovereignty in the above geographical areas after the mid. 11th century: internal political instability; overexposure of the new established Byzantine border to vast and inhomogeneous regions (Armenia, northern Mesopotamia, Cilicia, northern Syria); hostility of some of the local populations and their leadership to the local Byzantine authorities and (in general) to the imperial sovereignty and rule; Turkish military pressure across the whole imperial eastern border and the interior; difficulty in dealing with the new enemy for a variety of reasons (agility, multidimension etc.); new administrative and military organization (δουκάτα / doukates, κατεπανάτα / katepanates etc.) that had not yet fully established and properly consolidated, when if faced the deadly external threat; insufficient local leadership and fragmentation of command; personal interests and actions that led to confusion, segregation and dissolution; lack of sufficient military and economic resources; inadequate or bad diplomatic choices from the central and regional administration; decline of the old thematic system and the military organization in the interior of Asia Minor; consequent lack of defense in depth, poor regular and tactical organization, discouragement of imperial local armies and troops.
Extensive prosopographical catalogues of the political and military imperial officers, who served in the above areas during the 11th century AD, are also listed (based on the information provided primary by the known sigillographic evidence and other epigraphic material and -of course- the written sources).

The monograph (text in Greek language) examines in depth the life, military career and especially the uprising ("stasis") of the Norman (some claim Frank) mercenary commander of the Byzantine imperial army Ursel (or Roussel) de Bailleul, also known as "Ursellus de Ballione" (in Latin), "Roscelin" and "Roskelin". In medieval Greek narrative texts Ursel's name was attributed as "Ρουσέλιος" or "Ουρσέλιος" or "Ρωσέλης ο Φράγγος" and not as "Φραγγόπωλος" (= "Son of Frank"), as many modern researchers claim incorrectly. Besides Ursel's life and actions, the book also studies the internal political and military situation of the Byzantine Empire during the crucial period of the mid-11th century AD.
From what we know, Ursel served initially under the leaders of the Norman Hauteville family during their conquest campaigns in the Southern part of the Italian peninsula and in Sicily. According to Gaufredus Malaterra, he took part under the command of Roger de Hauteville in the battle of Cerami (Sicily, June 1063 AD) against the Saracens (i.e. Zirid Arabs), where he fought with bravery. Soon after that though, he chose to enlist in the ranks of the contemporary Byzantine army; for a time he served in the Balkan peninsula as an imperial mercenary officer. According to the inscription of his preserved seal, he held the Byzantine title of "vestes" (the reverse seal's invocation to Virgin Mary reads "Θεοτόκε βοήθει τω σω δούλω Ουρσελίω βέστη τω Φράγγω" / "Mother of God protect your servant vestes Ursel the Frank").
Some years later, Ursel took active part in the campaign, that led to the famous battle of Manzikert (26 August 1071 AD) between the Byzantine army, led by the emperor Romanos IV Diogenes, and the Seljuk army of sultan Alp Arslan; he did not fight in the battle itself though, as his cavalry force was obliged to withdraw from nearby Chliat and retreat to the West suffering casualties under strong enemy pressure. For his failure to reunite and reinforce the forces of Romanos, before the critical main clash of the two armies in Manzikert, Ursel was accused -rather incorrectly in our opinion- of cowardice and betrayal.
After the dethronement and the blinding of of Romanos IV (1072), Ursel continued to serve his successor, emperor Michael VII Doukas (1071-1078). He then decided though to betray the Byzantines (1073) and take advantage of the chaotic conditions that prevailed in Asia Minor (Anatolia) after the battle of Manzikert (intra-Byzantine conflicts, Turkish incursions, population fleeing etc.). Apparently, Ursel's main aim between 1073-1076 was the foundation of a personal hegemony within the limits of the same geographical region (perhaps a new small "Normandy", as the Hautevilles managed to create in Southern Italy). After defeating the Byzantines in the battle of Zombos bridge (in Sangarios river), he marched until the Asian suburbs of Constantinople, where he sacked Chrysopolis; he then even tried to impose his own candidate for the imperial throne (the captured Caesar John Doukas, uncle of Michael VII). In his efforts, Ursel was supported primarily by the Frankish and Norman knights and soldiers that the Byzantine government had already posted in Asia Minor, especially in the Armeniakon thema and the local city of Amaseia, where the Norman leader was apparently popular (primarily because of fear, according to Byzantine writers). The Byzantine government had to negotiate then with Turkish emirs (i.e. Artuch and Tutach), who had infiltrate with their forces in the area of Bithynia; Michael Doukas' regime also tried to secure the support of the "Great Seljuk" sultan Malik Shah, in order to suppress the movement of Ursel. The Turks managed to defeat the numerically inferior army of Ursel and captured the Norman leader; soon after that though the latter managed to escape. Ursel found then refuge, along with his family, in the Armeniakon, where he had additional trusted soldiers as local guards. Finally, the talented young general (and future emperor) Alexios I Komnenos achieved Ursel's arrest in Amaseia and took him as a captive to the Byzantine capital.
In our opinion, the rebellion and actions of Ursel has been of key importance for the collapse of imperial control in the interior of Asia Minor after 1073 and the establishment of incoming Turkish tribes within the area. It also prevented for three years (i.e. 1073-1076) the immediate communications of Constantinople with the vast Eastern border and neighboring areas of the Empire (extending from Cappadocia and Cilicia to Northern Syria, Northern Mesopotamia and Western Pontus); that situation led -more or less- to the loss of central imperial control over the local (Armenian and other) officers and forces and -consequently- of the above geographical area. In a sense, Ursel's movement heralded subsequent political and military developments (i.e. the arrival of the Western Crusaders and its implications) in the Middle East.

This paper re-examines the generally known (and until now usually accepted without serious challenge) sparse information that can be found in Byzantine historiography as well as in modern bibliography regarding the empress (augusta) and first wife of the Eastern Roman emperor Heraclius (610-641 CE), widely known as “Fabia - Eudocia”; however, it also takes into consideration the references to her that can be traced in some Hispano-African texts from the mid. 8th c. CE, in a catalogue of patriarch Nikephoros I (late 8th c. CE), in later handwritten versions of a Porphyrogenitus’ catalog from the early 11th c. preserved in codices of the 15th c. CE, in Iberian or Franco-Iberian chronicles from the 12th c. CE, as well as other relative information that can be obtained from papyri, lists of saints and material findings (inscriptions, images, jewelry, coinage etc.).

During the 11th c. CE the high-ranking civic officials (e.g. judges: "kritai" or "praitores") of the Opsician Theme (e.g. the administrative unit that covered most of northwest Byzantine Asia Minor / Anatolia) had completely overshadowed or even partially replaced the senior military officers (e.g. generals: "strategoi" and later "dukes"); the former exercised by then a variety of duties, in addition to their purely judicial powers. The holders of the office of "krites Opsikiou" usually descended from distinguished families of that time, although normally they were not associated with the traditionally powerful Roman clans of central and northern Asia Minor, who held large landholdings and direct access to provincial troops; on the contrary, they originated mainly from the governmental, bureaucratical and financial circles of the so-called (at that time) "politikon genos" of Constantinople. The Opsician judges were highly educated men and held prestige, special administrative and economic powers, wide intervention capacities and social influence in their areas and beyond, as well as access or direct contact with the Byzantine emperor himself. The latter treated them as his personal envoys in the region of their appointment, which was considered to hold particular importance for the economy of the Empire and the safety of its political and strategic core. The once prominent, glorified, imperial and God protected ("basilikon" and "theophylakton") Opsician Theme had declined as a strictly military unit during the 11th c. The wider area that covered administratively had been gradually transformed by then in an exclusively economic, fiscal and judicial district, which was characterized by a dense residential network and developed productive and other infrastructures. Mighty actors such as the state, the crown and members of the imperial families, prominent officials of the Byzantine capital (such as the "charistikarios", "despot[es]" of monasteries, villages and peasants and active local patron Michael Psellos), veteran militaries and local ecclesiastical seats and monasteries. The latter subject, however, will be the main research topic of a major forthcoming publication by the same author.
The article explores in depth the military factors and events of the insurrection of 1057 in Byzantine Asia Minor and especially the bloody and decisive battle of Hades (August 20); these events led to the abdication of the Emperor Michael VI Bringas and the simultaneous rise of Isaakios Komnenos (primary leader of the revolt) to the imperial throne. The paper focuses mainly on the presentation, clarification and analysis of the origins, composition, numbers, equipment, preparation, mobilization and deployment of opponent forces, of the rival commanders, of the battlefield topography, and – finally – of the conduct, outcome and casualties of the battle of Hades. Moreover, it argues that apart from its heavy death toll, the latter had also further and deeper implications, especially in military terms and matters. Modern research evaluates indeed rightly the events of 1057 as a turning point in the political history of the Byzantine Empire during the 11th c. AD. In our opinion though, the rather neglected military repercussions of the conflict were arguably even more important: the casualties sustained by the Anatolian imperial units in 1057 crippled severely the military strength and the morale of the remaining imperial Eastern field army; therefore, they were crucial to the penetration and establishment of various Turkish tribes into Asia Minor and the subsequent collapse of Byzantine sovereignty in this geographical area during the 1070s.

The paper argues that during the so-called “middle Byzantine period” populations of Slavic and other ethnic origin settled in geographical areas located to the east of Thessaloniki. Moreover, it supports that we could place those settlements with even more precision in the lakes of the Mygdonian basin, in the eastern (mainly) areas of Chalkidiki and at the southern part of the Strymon valley.
In our view, the above installations took place in two distinct time frameworks: (a) The so-called «ἔθνος τοῦ Ῥυγχίνου» ή «Σκλάβοι τοῦ Ῥυγχίνου» («Rhynchinoi», an obvious exonym) along with some other population groups of Slavic or other / mixed racial origin that are generally referred but not specifically mentioned in the sources («λοιπὰ βάρβαρα γένη», «προσπαρακείμενα ἔθνη», «οἱ περὶ αὐτῶν», «πλησιόχωροι Σκλαβήνοι») remained permanently, after the early 620’s and before the mid 670’s, in the valley of the modern Richios river (hence the names «Rhynchinos», «Rhynchinoi»), near the excavated fort of Rentina, and in other surrounding and neighboring areas stretching (from west to east) from the Volvi lake to the village of Λητή / Lete (the so-called “Strymonites”, also an exonym, settled in the Strymon valley). (b) During the mid 10th c. AD, probably after 943 and before 959/60, a rather small population of “Βulgarian-Slavs” («Σκλάβων Βουλγάρων») farmers settled in the region of Hierissos.
The above installations can be traced in a variety of written reports, possibly in limited material findings from the aforementioned geographical areas, but mainly in the place names and anthroponyms of Slavic origin that occur mainly in medieval Athonite documents from the 9th c. AD and following. The descendants of the Slavs coexisted rather peacefully with native Greek-speaking populations and assimilated over time within the Byzantine state framework and the local economic and cultural (religious, linguistic etc.) environment.

Τhe testimony of linguistic evidence for the historical continuity and the wider implications of medieval Slavic settlements in the southern part of the Balkan peninsula is of extreme importance, considering also the scarcity of written sources for the so-called “Dark centuries of Byzantium” (7th - 9th c. AD). The linguistic residues of the Slavic presence in this area can be identified separately into (a) proper names (toponyms of settlements and places, hydronyms, ethnonyms, anthroponyms etc.) and (b) common noun loans (or common names) in Medieval and Modern Greek language. The paper includes an introductory part on toponymy and linguistic research regarding mainly the Greek areas (definition, origin and sources of medieval place names and anthroponyms of Slavic or “mixed” etymology). It also analyzes the factors and the necessary scientific methods and criteria for the analysis and use of the above material. Moreover, it contains an overview of the contribution of older and contemporary scholars regarding this subject. It highlights some new data from the research of toponyms. Finally, taking into account the testimony of the rather limited common noun loans of Slavic origin in Greek language, it summarizes the main historical conclusions resulting from the study of linguistic evidence of medieval Slavic installations in Greece.

This paper collects and evaluates all available data from the Byzantine and Eastern (Armenian, Arabic, Syrian, Turkish) sources that demonstrate that the Battle of Mantzikert (August 26, 1071 AD) was not, at least in diplomatic terms, a great disaster for the Byzantine state, as is usually supported. During the negotiations and in the official peace treaty that followed at the Turkish military camp near the area of the battlefield (late August - early September), the concessions of the defeated and captured Byzantine emperor Romanos ΙV Diogenes to the victor Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan were rather limited. Consequently, Byzantium did not officially concede or lost lands of considerable size to its eastern border in 1071 AD.

In this paper, we focus on the rather neglected Battle of Marcianople that initiated the Gothic War of 377-382. First, the literary tradition for the Thervingian revolt and for the battle itself was traced, evaluated and arranged according to the quality and quantity of evidence. Remarkably, a rich kaleidoscope of references in Late Antique and Medieval (Latin and Byzantine) texts exists. So, primary sources supplemented by modern secondary bibliography and relevant archaeological findings provide much insight into the issue. In summary, based on those data and criteria the following conclusions were reached: a plausible, overall timetable for the historic events during 376-377 was established; the outbreak of the revolt and the battle was especially settled in early 377. The topography was surveyed as well. Perhaps the Thervingi refugees entered Late Roman territory from several fords across the Lower Danube basin, but their southward trek to Marcianople commenced from Durostorum, maybe by two local, almost parallel routes. Based on the road system of the region, two probable locations for the battlefield were pinpointed ca. 13.5 km/8.3 miles to the north or west of the ancient city (modern Reka Devnya, Bulgaria). The collaboration between the Thervingi and Greuthungi Goths even before this battle was also assessed and ruled out through textual analysis. The battle was analysed in regard to opponent forces, strategy and tactics, military equipment, battle phases and outcome, and human and material loss. Finally, the repercussions of this obscure battle were studied, because it served as a prelude to the well-known Battle of Adrianople and also marked the start of the Barbarian Invasions and the Migration Period.

Abydos was an ancient and medieval Greek city (πόλις) with a long and continuous historical life (ca. mid. 7th c. BC - early 14th c. AD). The city situated on the Asiatic coast of Hellespont (Dardanelles), in the cape Nara area, near modern Çanakkale. Its busy port (λιμήν or ἐμπόριον) and customs office (δημόσιον τελωνεῖον or δεκατευτήριον or κομμέρκιον Ἀβύδου) had a continuous and large commercial and tax-collecting activity. An imperial storehouse (ἀποθήκη) also functioned there between 7th and 8th c. AD. Abydos was also an important administrative, military (as a seat of an archon or komes and later paraphylax, strategos and katepano Abydou) and ecclesiastical center (ἐπισκοπή and later μητρόπολις) in northwestern Asia Minor. This short publication notes the various institutions and organizational frameworks that supported the above functions from Late antiquity (period of Roman domination) to late Byzantine times.

Most contemporary historical maps and publications represent and describe an almost complete collapse of Byzantine sovereignty in the Balkans during the 7th and 8th centuries AD, that is, after the Slavic and Proto-Bulgarian establishments in the same area. This brief paper argues though that the existing historical information and archaeological findings contradict the above picture and notion and demonstrate a very different political and military situation in the Balkan Peninsula during the above centuries.

This online manual (lessons in Greek language) serves academic teaching purposes. It examines the historical geography of the Byzantine Empire ("Romania" or "Rhomaion politeia"); in other words, the natural landscape, districts and settlements of the Eastern Mediterranean world during the Middle Ages.
After a short introductory presentation of the synthesizing discipline of Historical Geography and the extent (and changes) of the geographic knowledge in the Mediterranean world during the Late Antiquity and subsequent medieval centuries, it focuses on the study of the following subjects and topics: areas and landscapes of Byzantium (i.e. Balkans, Islands, Asia Minor, Armenia, Northern Mesopotamia, Syria, Palestine, Northern Africa, Italy) - climate conditions and changes to the natural environment after the Late Antiquity - economic exploitation of land and sea - communication network (land and sea routes) - frontiers, administrative division, territorial annexes and losses of Byzantium - ecclesiastical organization and monachism, urban and rural settlements and place-names - population (nations and languages) - sources and bibliography for the historical geography of Byzantium.
The manual is based mainly on specialized published works of professors Johannes Koder and Michalis Kordosis and secondly to other publications related to its study; it also includes rich visual material, such as maps, illustrations, photographs etc.
