The article studies an unusually heavy (8.92 g) imitation of the Rhescuporis IV stater, discovered in Krasnodar region. The imitation was made with the use of a coinage technology, non-typical in the Bosporan state. The mintage was made using the broccage technology, with the obverse and the reverse swapped. It is obvious that different diameters of coins were used for the mints, which resulted in the conical imitation. We examine a current coin, not a votive, since the artifact was not made by casting and
does not bear any traces of trimming. It is also noticeable that the mints were corrected, which indicates their long-term use. The imitation has preserved impeccably executed inscriptions clearly imprinted on the mints of genuine coins. However, the images of the rulers are not canonical. The obverse stamp has two relief busts of long-haired men, while the central part of the reverse stamp has an image of the Bosporan sovereign in
low relief, turned to the left, and outlined in bold lines. Moreover, the working surface of the stamps was cleaned extremely carelessly and ineptly before placing. It is also noteworthy that the imitation shows the ordinary trims for the Rhescuporis IV staters, and the emission designation on the reverse has been restored. However, the replica does not have any markings that could be attributed to the issuing body. We believe
that imitations of the kind could participate in regional monetary circulation. Such coins could have been minted in the late 3rd – the first half of the 4th century. Its discovery convincingly that serious interethnic interactions between the residents of the region and the Bosporan state of that period. The territory of the emission center should be considered an ethno-contact zone between the ancient and barbarian worlds.

Our attention was drawn to the text on the pedestal of the trophy erected in memory of the victory won by King Teiranes. It mentions his wife Aelia. Our interest in this fact is by no means accidental. After all, the Bosporus sovereigns, as a rule, were in the shadow of their royal spouses. We assume that Aelia belonged to the noble Roxolani clan whose leaders received Roman citizenship from Hadrian and, accordingly, became Publii Aelii. There is every reason to believe that the alliance concluded by Teiranes with this group of nomads from the northwestern Black Sea region allowed him to win the victory immortalized in the studied inscription.

The study of the classical antiquity numismatic record from Southern Crimea is under way. It is another group of Roman denarii from the Baydar Valley which is introduced here into scholarly usage. There are 7 coins recovered during surface investigations in the valley as well as a small hoard of 22 coins, ten of which were studied de visu. Thus, on the present-day surface, a sample of coins of the 1st — early 3rd century was found: one each of Galba, Vespasian, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Caracalla, while Septimius Severus was represented with a pair of coins. The hoard consisted of denarii issued under the emperors of the Antonine dynasty. It contained coins dating back to the reigns of Trajan (1 item), Hadrian (2 items), Antoninus Pius (2 items), Marcus Aurelius (4 items), and Commodus (1 item). If the selected sample correctly reflects the hoard’s content, then it was formed under the latest of the above mentioned emperors or under his closest successors. All these coins could circulate among the legionnaires who served in the garrison of Charax. A fragment of a cast limes denarius of Commodus was found as well, made of high-tin bronze; it is supposed to be made within the same time range as the denarius—stater.

There are two hanging seals in our field of vision, the generally accepted attribution of which has not yet been developed. Both on the obverse and the reverse of the unepigraphic seal of Roman origin, highly artistic, embossed and realistically executed busts are imprinted depicting bearded emperors crowned with laurel wreaths; the short-bearded one is most likely Caracalla, while the long-bearded one is presumably Septimius Severus. The portraits on both sides of the second seal seem to depict another pair of Roman sovereigns, since they are represented wearing cuirasses and military cloaks and diadems. To render the images, the official style of iconic representation was used, which was popular in the Roman Empire since the time of Constantine I. The attribution of the second seal is also facilitated by the fact that on its obverse and reverse, remains of the legends have been observed, wherein it is possible to restore the names “Julian” and “Procopius”. The conclusion is that the first seal was stamped under Caracalla and the second one under Procopius; here is the clear evidence of reigning emperors appealing to the authority of their ancestors.

The unique stater 46/47 CE on both sides has imprinted busts of men turned to the right: on the obverse — a beardless man in a laurel wreath, framed by the legend “ΒΑCΙΛΕΩC ΜΙΘΡΙΔΑΤΟΥ”, and on the reverse — a bearded man without a headdress, deliberately barbaric in appearance. In front of the latter there is a sign known both in Central Asia (Khwarazm, where it was found on coins, Kangju and nomadic territories of South and West Kazakhstan), and among the Sarmatians of Eastern Europe. Probably, the studied coin was minted on behalf of the king Mithridates III. It has two portraits: on the obverse — Emperor Claudius, on the reverse — the aforementioned Bosporan sovereign. Such a tamga (its different placement in space was allowed) was previously presented in Europe on a slab from the Artesian fortress in the same row with the Aspurgos sign. It is located in the center of the “Kerch written slab” with almost 500 signs. After the middle of the 1 st c. CE, such a sign on a horse stamp is presented in the Lower Don necropolis of Kirsanovskii III in the Middle Sarmatian burial of an aristocrat. Apparently, this is the last representative of this clan, so the stamp (the rarest case) was buried with him. Probably, the tamga on the coin represents the sign of a clan that belonged to a very influential aristocracy of Central Asian origin, which turned out to be by the beginning of the 1 st c. CE on the territory of the Kuban Siraces, and after the strengthening of the Alans migrated to the mouth of the Don.

We continue to study the differents on the Bosporan coins of the Roman period. We are interested in the designations on the last series of small bronzes. These coins were issued under Rhescuporis IV. Moreover, they were minted not only in the capital, but also in the tribal districts of the North-Eastern Black Sea region with centers in the North Caucasus. We judge by the fact that tamgas are imprinted on these coins. We believe that the Bosporan sovereign ordered to place symbols sacred for the barbarians on them in order to popularize his regime. This circumstance should explain the fact of the long-term issue of his small coins, which continued even when they started minting staters of bronze.

One of the most serious problems facing numismatists studying the coinage of the late Bosporus is the identification of replicas of the official coinage money. The problem is that there are still no generally accepted criteria for distinguishing imitations from original coins. Trying to approximate the solution of this problem, consider the Theothorses staters on which the symbolic designation of the date 582 BE is placed. We believe that all these coins are genuine official mintage. They were released at the beginning of Theothorses reign. Most likely, they were minted in the center of his domain in a nomadic headquarters located in the Central Ciscaucasia. But it is unlikely that they were released for only 1 year. We assume that these coins have been issued for much longer. It is quite possible those 2–3 years. This circumstance can explain the variety of their types manifested in the spread and rearrangement of letters in the symbolic designations of the date of issue in the horizontal reflection of the images of the Bosporan king and the Roman emperor, while maintaining the same errors in the legend of the obverse. We conclude that errors of this kind in legends may not always be regarded as signs of a replica.

Rhadamsades is known for coins and two laconic inscriptions. It is still discussed whether he can be identified as Rausimodus, who by Zosimus’s account, led the barbarians, who were defeated by the Romans, in the battles on the Danube. We believe that Rhadamsades was Tiberius Julius, the son-in-law and heir of Theothorses, and, therefore, the legitimate king of Bosporus. Moreover, he ruled this state together with Rhescuporis V, apparently his younger relative, most likely his brother. The residence of these sovereigns was in the eastern part of Bosporus. They were loyal to the emperors. Rhadamsades could not be the leader of the barbarians who attacked the Romans on the Danube.

The object of study was a marble bust, the so-called “Portrait of Hadrian in a laurel wreath”, kept in the collection of the State Hermitage. It attributed as an image of a noble and influential provincial who lived in Syria in the second and third quarters of the 3rd century. Many details allow us to see in it Odaenathus of Palmyra. We believe that his statue was installed on the main forum of Elia Capitolina. Judging by the expression, it should be about his intravital image. The appearance of the Odaenathus statue in Aelia Capitolina was due to the entry of Syria Palaestina into the zone of influence of Palmyra during his reign since 260 CE.

The object of study was the embedded plate located above the entrance to the Sary Gyuzel bathhouse. It was found that it was originally attached above the entrance to the city mosque — Khan Jami. Later, as a result of repair, the embedded plate was removed and mounted in the masonry of Sary Gyuzel city bath. I believe that this inscription is directly related to the foundation of Bakhchisaray. As a result of studying its text, a weighty argument was received for dating the foundation of this capital of the Crimean Khanate by 939 AH.

The objects of research were bronze coins of Sauromates I (93—123/124) with a bust of the sovereign turned to the left on the obverse and with images of Aphrodite Apatura, Nika, as well as a burning fortress and allegory of the defeated country — the figure of a bound woman kneeling on the reverse. They were minted not only for financial, but also for propaganda purposes. It is no accident that the images of Aphrodite Apatura and Nika are framed by a laurel wreath on them. For the same purpose, an image of a burning fortress and an allegory of a defeated country were placed on coins. The inhabitants of Bosporus were informed about the piety of the sovereign, and also praised his victories won in the war with the Scythians. Sauromates I managed to capture an important barbarian fortress, located on the periphery of the Bosporus kingdom. The bust of the ruler was deployed on the studied coins to the left to attract the attention of the population to these means of payment.

This paper addresses the whole set of the epigraphic and numismatic materials yielded by excavations on the coastal area of Ilyich 1 settlement in 2015—2016 (excavation Bereg-IV). The site is situated around the well-known Ilyich fort located at the northern boundary of the modern village of Ilyich in Temryuk district of the Krasnodar Kray. The dig uncovered predominantly the materials of the early Roman period (mid 1st century BC — mid 1st century AD). In the course of the excavations, also a horizon of the Hellenistic period was discovered. The latter included two ash accumulations, five household pits and four baby burials in amphorae. The amphora stamps date the objects within 380/370—109 BC. The coins indicate a somewhat differing date of 314/310 BC — 14/13 BC/9—10 AD. A synthesis of the numismatic and epigraphic evidence helped identify seven ‘arbitrary’ chronological stages in trade and monetary relations on Ilyich 1 in the Hellenistic period.

The study was conducted to clarify the current understanding of the situation on the Bosporus during the reign of Aspurgus (14/15—37/38 AD). The objects of study were the coins of this sovereign, lapidary inscriptions in the texts of which he was mentioned, as well as monuments of fine art: reliefs of the Ara Pacis and a portrait of the king from Panticapaeum. Reasons have been identified that prompted Aspurgus to issue coins with monograms, rather than a legend containing his name and title. In the course of the study, it was concluded that this ruler was one of the younger representatives of the Sapaeans and Zenonids house related to Julii. He accepted the title of a great king and agreed to be deified in order to legitimize his power on the Bosporus.

The objects of the study are silver coins with images of fish on the reverse. They are found in the Crimea, on the territory and near of Sudak and Qırq Yer. Six such coins have been found on the peninsula to date and three of them are preserved in the Qırq Yer hoard. There is no reason to consider them as local issues. Similarly decorated coins were minted in the principality of Samtskhe-Saatabago under atabeg Quarkvare II Jakeli.
It is obvious that the inhabitants of Crimea knew and appreciated Georgian coins. Otherwise, they would not have been hidden in the Qırq Yer hoard. This circumstance makes it possible to clarify our ideas about the contacts of the population of Georgia and Crimea in the second half of the 15th century. Obviously, those links existed and were quite stable. Georgian coin was valued not only on the coast, but also in Qırq Yer.
We conclude that trade relations existed between Georgia and Crimea at
that time. We believe that silver of Quarkvare II Jakeli arrived on the peninsula in two ways: by land, by caravan roads passing through the southern regions of the steppe, and also by sea, from the Italian colonies of the Eastern Black Sea coast.

The study was conducted to establish the fact and dating of the joint rule of Rhadamsades and Rhescuporis V. The inscription of CIRB 66 and the coins of these sovereigns became objects of this study. We believe that Rhescuporis V was co-regent of Rhadamsades since his assumption of power. Moreover, these sovereigns were not originally equal, judging by the fact that in the first years of their joint rule, only Rhadamsades had the right to emit money. Rhescuporis V received the right to mint his coins after winning a war with external enemies. Rhadamsades and Rhescuporis V jointly ruled the Kingdom of Bosporus until the former’s death.

The article represents a Bosporan bronze obol of the 3rd century BC with the beardless Satyr on the obverse and the head of a bull on the reverse. The obol is unusual, since its both sides have ountermarks dated by the 1st century BC. As far as bronze coins of this series fell out of circulation as a result of the financial crisis of the 3rd century BC, such long use of the coin can be explained by its long circulation on the periphery of the Bosporus state, where the limited inflow of new means of payment stipulated longer circulation of previous issues. Judging by a hanging hole, the locals might value the coin described as an amulet. Since the countermark on the coin contains the sign of the Aspurgians, the region of its circulation can be easily identified. The author assumes that this countermark was stamped around the year 12 BC by the Mithridatides, who had taken refuge in the territory of this tribe during the struggle with Polemon I. This study allows tracing the contacts between the Bosporus and barbarian population of its periphery, in this case with the Aspurgians, who obviously used the means of payment of this state starting from the 3rd century BC. The Aspurgians, like the Bosporians, revered Satyr. Thus, the data of numismatics show that there were well-developed inter-ethnic contacts between the Hellenes and the Hellenized population of Bosporus and the Aspurgians.

В конце II в. до н.э.
The Civil Community of Chersonesus voluntarily recognized the dependence of his polis on the Kingdom of Pontus at the end of the 2nd century BCE. Its Decision was reflected in mint. Bronze dichalkoi with the bust of Helios on the obverse and with the Cornucopia and with Dioscuri Caps on the reverse were released in Chersonesus. They were minted under the control of the nomophylakes Heraclides. Under him, the relations between Pontus and Chersonesus were built based on the Agreement on Symmachia. Governor Demetrius ruled Chersonesus later. He released the drachma with images of the Parthenos on the obverse and the reverse. These coins went into circulation during the period of acute shortage of means of payment in Chersonesus, caused by the struggle of Bithynia and Pontus for Cappadocia in 103/102 BCE. The mint in Chersonesus ceased for a while after Demetrius. The influx of foreign coins decreased. The economy of Chersonesus suffered from the down turn in foreign trade caused by the wars waged by Mithridates VI Eupator Dionysius. The city resumed mint only during the uprising in 63 BCE. The tetrachalkoi of Agathon entered into circulation then. He commanded the local garrison under Mithridates VI Eupator Dionysius. Agathon became the Tyrant of Chersonesus as the result of the revolt of 63 BCE.

The object of study in this article were the coins of Athens and their imitations, issued during the first war of Rome with Mithridates VI Eupator Dionysius. We described all of their series and clarified the circumstances of their appearance in circulation. We believe that both the authorities of the Athens, and the Romans then issued the same type of coin. Only the coins of the Roman mint had quaestor M. Licinius Lucullus’s monograms in the so-called “lucuilla”, rather than lengthy legends with the names of the monetary magistrates. And it is not surprising. The coins of the Athens were the international currency then. Given these facts, we concluded that Archelaus had no reason to mint the Pontic coin in the Athens. And, finally, the appearance in circulation of an imitation of Athenian coins with the legend “ΑΘΕ/Ο/ΔΕΜΟ/Σ” was explained. We believe that they were minted in Asia Minor on behalf of the Athenians who left the city after its occupation by L. Cornelius Sulla. The traditionality of the design of these coins testifies to the correctness of our conclusions.

My attention was attracted by Anonymous Copper and Bronze Coins of the Pontic Emission. I’m believed that they were the money of the Royal Coinage, and credit in nature. There is no reason to consider them exclusively military releases. I’m admitting that in the Kingdom of Pontus they were issued instead of a small silver coin. The fact is that the wars waged by Mithridates VI Eupator Dionysus demanded considerable funds, which it was not possible to attract at a time. The king could save them only thanks to the early replacement of small silver with credit in essence copper and bronze coins. They were issued for circulation both on newly annexed lands, and in territories already controlled by this great enemy of Rome. And for each significant region, their anonymous bronze coins were issued. So they fought with speculation on the course of credit money. Anonymous copper and bronze Pontic Coins went at face value until the power of Mithridates VI Eupator Dionysus was stable.
After the death of the king, his credit money fell out of circulation. However, the successors of this sovereign Pharnaces II and Asander preserved the practice of issuing anonymous copper and bronze. As a rule, they were copied from the coins of Mithradates VI Eupator Dionysus. The very fact of emission and the continued use of credit money testifies to the high level of development of the financial system of the Kingdom of Pontus.
