Documentation and Inquiry in the Early Childhood Classroom: Research Stories from Urban Centers and Schools is a celebration of teacher intelligence and professional acumen. In bringing together the narratives of a plethora of early childhood educators from a broad range of settings, Kroll and Meier showcase what is possible when early childhood educators research and write about their own classrooms. In a climate where teachers are increasingly told what to do and how to do it, the book makes a strong and much needed statement about the capability of teachers. And in a society that gives little respect to teachers who work with the youngest children, Kroll and Meier demonstrate how deserving these educators are of the highest regard. Finally, as more policy is focused on early childhood education, Kroll and Meier's advocacy on behalf of holistic and humanistic approaches to children and their teachers is valuable. The editors and practitioners draw their inspiration from a tradition of teacher inquiry largely associated with primary and secondary teachers and early childhood teaching in Reggio Emilia, Italy. In their writing on teacher inquiry, Kroll and Meier achieve three significant feats. The first is to add new life to a marginalized conversation about teacher inquiry. While there are certainly teachers still engaged in inquiry, the movement, as documented by Kroll and Meier, has largely been pushed aside and silenced as teachers are pressured to follow directives and assess children through standardized metrics. The second is that Kroll and Meier make an important addition to the conversation: the work and voices of U.S. early childhood educators. The third is the centrality of school‑based inquiry in the book. Much previous writing on teacher inquiry focuses on groups housed outside of the school. This is important work, but can mean that a teacher may find herself returning to an unsupportive daily environment. In contrast, nearly all of Kroll and Meier's case studies were school‑wide initiatives. The book is divided into four sections: school wide‑wide inquiry, children and teachers conducting inquiry together, teaching teachers about documentation and inquiry assessments, and developing leadership through inquiry. Within these themes, each chapter zooms into a particular setting featuring the narratives of teachers from 12 different settings in the Bay Area. These include more commonly discussed programs such as public schools and head start programs, but also a parent cooperative, a migrant and seasonal head start program, and a preschool in a museum. This captures the range of settings in which early childhood educators and children find themselves. A commonality among the settings is a focus on those that served low‑income minority children and, in many cases, those learning English. In keeping a narrow regional focus, the book can both transport the reader while remaining widely resonate. As readers practicing in rural Maine, we were able to learn about a different context while also reflecting on our own. Each narrative took an asset‑oriented view of children and a dominant refrain was that children can teach us much about the world. For example, in Las Americas Early Education School, a multi‑age preschool with mainstreamed special education students, educators had to learn how to listen to children. This careful listening allowed the teachers to break down their own preconceived notion that they were the primary source of information as they came to see the children as holders of knowledge. Another theme was the power of planning curriculum with and alongside children. In many cases, the curriculum was culturally responsive, several months long, and intellectually rich and challenging. For example, in the bilingual Mission Head Start Valencia Garden, the teachers developed an investigation of fish based initially on one child who was struggling with transitions and his positive response to the song " Slippery Fish. " Around this topic, the teachers carefully assembled a wealth of materials and manipulatives. In doing so, they drew in the rest of the children. The teachers kept the inquiry moving and rich by asking questions and documenting children's knowledge. This specific journey allowed for parents and the public to join as well: " Not only were families deeply engaged in the inquiry process, they had developed effective skills and strategies for facilitating their children's inquiry outside of school " (p. 69). Reflecting the power of diversity, the differently voiced narratives draw the reader in and connect smoothly with one another, allowing the book to flow effortlessly. The visuals and the use of specific examples give the reader a window into how the children conversed, inquired, and learned from the inquiries.

Quando nel 1971 Giulia Niccolai e Adriano Spatola decidono di fondare la rivista «Tam Tam» hanno la chiara intenzione di dare un forte impulso all'intermedialità. Nei primi mesi del 1972 viene pubblicato il primo numero, stampato a Montecchio Emilia dalla tipografia Fontanini. La redazione è a Mulino di Bazzano, in provincia di Parma, ma la registrazione è presso il Tribunale di Torino, sede delle edizioni Geiger, fondate da Adriano con il fratello Maurizio nel 1967, quando era stato avviato il progetto di 'assembling press' concretizzato nell'omonima antologia internazionale. «Tam Tam» ha una testata che visualizza sinesteticamente, in una sorta di prospettiva acustica, il suono del tribale strumento di comunicazione. Il che già la dice lunga su scambi e convergenze linguistiche e sulla volontà di porsi nel mezzo di una rete di comunicazione al di fuori dei canali istituzionali. Testata e progetto grafico della rivista sono di Giovanni Anceschi, il formato è insolito, minuscolo e leggero, tascabile e postabile senza difficoltà: entra comodamente nella classica busta 12x18 e può arrivare, senza grosse spese, anche oltreoceano. Le tecniche non legate alla linearità della scrittura sono al centro dell'attenzione. Spatola è molto informato su quanto succede nel mondo. Il concretismo internazionale va a gonfie vele, Fluxus impegna spazi sempre più ampi; in Italia le pratiche verbovisive si fanno sempre più coinvolgenti: una fitta rete di scambi tra Bologna, Firenze, Genova, Napoli, Roma, Torino è già una realtà degna di grande attenzione. In questo clima, la rivista, chiaramente schierata contro l'engagement antiletterario, sostiene istanze totalizzanti e si apre ad esperienze di confine. La disponibilità a cedere ad impulsi extra letterari incoraggia un tipo di scrittura polidimensionale. Contaminazioni e scambi attuati su territori di frontiera determinano una testualità complessa che non riesce ad evitare l'attrazione di modi e tecniche linguistiche di diversa estrazione. Ci si rivolge con rinnovata attenzione verso le avanguardie storiche e, nello stesso tempo, si tengono d'occhio le tecnologie emergenti con particolare riferimento verso i sistemi di comunicazione e le problematiche che implicano. La visualità, il fonetismo, la gestualità, il nonsense, disvelano in pieno la matrice materica dei modelli di poesia che si vogliono affermare. Le scelte della redazione, grazie ad «una condensazione non soltanto gestuale, visuale o concreta, ma soprattutto segnica o ideografica del testo», 1 favoriscono il superamento delle barriere linguistiche e attivano numerose convergenze in funzione di «una ristrutturazione verticale del fare poetico» 2 in opposizione allo «sterminato materiale lessicale messo a disposizione dal meccanismo dell'espansione orizzontale, tenuta a livello dei mass media». 3 Queste dichiarazioni fuori dal coro, quando il dibattito è tutto orientato sulla dicotomia impegno/disimpegno e il clima di restaurazione culturale si fa pesante, coagulano intorno all'iniziativa editoriale un vivace flusso di autori italiani e stranieri, che rivendicano «il diritto dell'operazione poetica a istituirsi come coscienza della e nella attività comunicativa, in una sintesi non a priori ma a posteriori, dal paesaggio dell'esperienza quotidiana all'astrazione intellettuale». 4 Già da anni Spatola 5 è in contatto con i più importanti esponenti della poesia concreta e visuale. Allievo di Luciano Anceschi, è chiamato a collaborare con «il verri» e attraverso quell'esperienza ha assimilato il concetto anceschiano di 'convergenza delle arti': l'opera d'arte è vista in chiave fenomenologica e letta nel mezzo di una rete di interconnessioni e di scambi interdisciplinari che ne chiariscono il senso. Dopo «Bab ilu» (1962), si fa le ossa nel Gruppo 63, pubblica il romanzo L'Oblò (Feltrinelli, 1964), anima «Malebolge» (1964-65). Abstract: I giocattoli computazionali stanno acquistando un peso sempre maggiore nei contesti caratterizzati da una elevata cultura tecnologica e godono di una grande diffusione anche nelle fasce pi giovani della popolazione, specie quelle in et prescolare. Ma soprattutto suscitano negli adulti in generale, e in particolare in chi si occupa di problematiche educative, opinioni contrastanti. C'è chi li ritiene un'ottima "palestra" per i piu giovani, che dovrebbero cosi prendere confidenza e prepararsi ad interagire con gli strumenti e i gadget del loro probabile futuro, diventandone al contempo protagonisti nella progettazione e nella creazione e non limitandosi ad esserne solo utenti. Altri, al contrario, denunciano i pericoli insiti nel fatto che i piu piccoli si accostino troppo presto ad espressioni tecnologiche pensate per un mondo di adulti e spesso finalizzate a promuovere la produttività piuttosto che la riflessione, col risultato di deprimere la creatività e costringere lo spazio del gioco a dimensioni e percorsi ripetitivi. Com'è ovvio, entrambe le posizioni sono in buona misura giustificate, ed entrambe tuttavia peccano di assolutismo. Può essere, forse, piu interessante chiederci quali caratteristiche possiamo evidenziare, nel giocattolo in s e nel contesto in cui questo viene proposto al bambino, che ne ottimizzino la valenza pedagogica e di crescita. A nostro avviso un buon giocattolo computazionale, perchè possa essere considerato tale, dovrebbe poter assolvere a due importanti compiti: da un lato, rivestire un alto valore cognitivo, in grado di favorire, ad esempio, l'apprendimento di concetti complessi (quali feedback, auto-organizzazione, causalità, controllo, intenzionalità), lo sviluppo di modalità di pensiero astratto e strutturato e di capacita di modellizzazione della conoscenza, ecc.; dovrebbe, inoltre, essere in grado di suscitare importanti e significativi interrogativi su temi quali vivente e animato, oltre ad assolvere alla funzione cognitiva di costruzione del s e dell'identità individuale. Dall'altro lato, dovrebbe poter giocare un ruolo di mediazione e transazione culturale in grado di veicolare valori e letture del mondo, di produrre ed elaborare nuovi significati, di assolvere alla funzione sociale di costruzione dell'identità collettiva e di un sistema di valori condiviso. Condizione necessaria, seppur non sufficiente, perchè le due funzioni sopra citate vengano assolte che questi oggetti siano non solo ispezionabili (a differenza della maggior parte dei giocattoli commerciali quali, ad esempio, Tamagotchi o Furby), consentendo di entrare dentro sia ai meccanismi di costruzione e assemblaggio che a quelli che ne regolano il comportamento e l'interazione con l'esterno, ma soprattutto modificabili, consentendo la creazione di variazioni significative a partire da un modello dato o la produzione ex novo. In questo senso, rivestono particolare interesse i giocattoli il cui comportamento sia programmabile, che coniughino ciò la generalità e la flessibilità del computer con la concretezza e la reattività degli automi (o robot). Obiettivo del presente articolo quello di proporre alcune riflessioni su cosa possa e debba intendersi per un buon giocattolo tecnologico, anche attraverso lo sviluppo di una proposta di utilizzabilità che sia in grado di "rivestire" il giocattolo di una serie di metodiche, interfacce, servizi, funzioni, dispositivi software e hardware in grado di conferirgli appetibilità, usabilità, ispezionabilità secondo una data granularità, e trattabilità da parte di bambini piccoli. L'articolo si compone di due parti distinte. Nella prima, dal titolo "Ambienti di gioco programmabili: cos'è possibile per un bambino di quattro anni?" Edith K. Ackermann si occupa di analizzare quali aspetti della programmazione possono essere di particolare interesse per i bambini. Cosa vuol dire programmare? Persone diverse associano a questa attività significati diversi. Inoltre, non tutti sono d'accordo sulle sue potenzialità per l'apprendimento. Ackermann propone di guardare alla programmazione come a uno strumento per esplorare concetti relazionali quali "controllo" e "agente", ma soprattutto in quanto specchio e finestra attraverso cui i bambini possono entrare in relazione o dialogare con oggetti e persone, oltre che con s stessi nella relazione con interlocutori artificiali (in termini piagetiani, la capacità di "regolare gli scambi" col mondo. In questo contesto, la programmazione diventa un medium per dare ed eseguire ordini; per costruire comportamenti autonomi o interagire con essi; per animare oggetti; per simulare comportamenti. Inoltre, la programmazione può diventare un contesto ricco per esplorare le teorie dei bambini sulla mente propria, degli altri e delle creature artificiali. Vengono discusse sia le valenze della programmazione nello sviluppo cognitivo dei bambini che alcune indicazioni per la progettazione di ambienti di gioco programmabili per bambini di quattro anni.
Nella seconda parte, intitolata La fabbrica dei robot, Augusto Chioccariello, Stefania Manca e Luigi Sarti cercano di rispondere alla domanda: come rendere possibile per i bambini la programmazione di costruzioni cibernetiche? La composizione di programmi, tradizionalmente considerata un'attività specialistica, può essere affrontata anche da bambini, purchè gli ambienti proposti siano specializzati nella direzione delle caratteristiche del problema da risolvere; siano immediatamente operativi e sostengano il dialogo e la riflessione metacognitiva. Viene proposto un modello a regole per la definizione del comportamento di un robot, che instaura una relazione tra lo stato dei sensori e una sequenza di azioni. Comportamenti complessi sono il risultato della composizione di comportamenti semplici. Poichè si tratta di una proposta rivolta a bambini piccoli, l'ambiente deve poter offrire delle modalità di accesso sia iconiche che testuali e permettere di personalizzare i nomi e la rappresentazione grafica dei suoi elementi, in sintonia col significato antico di "dare nome" alle cose nel senso di controllarle. I bambini possono esplorare comportamenti esistenti (esempi precostituiti o sviluppati da altri), adattarli alle loro necessità o crearne di nuovi. L'articolo descrive un kit di costruzioni cibernetiche basato sul LEGO MINDSTORMS e le caratteristiche di un ambiente di sviluppo software che privilegia approcci sociali basati sulla narrazione e la meta-riflessione. Vengono, inoltre, descritti alcuni progetti realizzati da bambini di cinque e sei anni nelle scuole dell'infanzia del Comune di Reggio Emilia.
