Les poèmes de Giorgio Bassani (1916-2000) n'accompagnent pas seulement ses romans. Ils en offrent la vérité, ou, comme il aimait à le dire lui-même : toute la vérité. En 1961, il écrivait à Michel Mohrt : "Je suis un écrivain lyrique" . Et il ne cessera de le répéter tout au long de sa carrière. C'est pourquoi, de même qu'il avait tenu en 1980 à offrir la version définitive du Roman de Ferrare en rassemblant dans une oeuvre unique ses grands livres de prose (Dans les murs ; Les Lunettes d'or ; Le Jardin des Finzi-Contini ; Derrière la porte ; Le Héron ; L'Odeur du foin), il reprenait deux ans plus tard en un seul volume l'ensemble d'une production poétique dont la composition avait comme enchâssé le Roman de Ferrare : sous le titre d'In rima e senza (Avec et sans rimes), il réunissait Storie dei poveri amanti (1945), Te lucis ante (1947), Un'altra libertà (1951), Epitaffio (1974) et In gran segreto (1978). A l'occasion de la publication en Italie de l'édition complète de ses poèmes et, en France, d'une nouvelle édition, revue et augmentée, d'une large sélection de textes poétiques en traduction française, un colloque consacré à "Giorgio Bassani poète" s'est tenu à Parisle 15 octobre 2021. Les interventions réunies dans ce volume des actes offrent des itinéraires de lecture dans un univers poétique marqué par une surprenante variété de registres : des tonalités plus lyriques des premiers recueils jusqu'aux vers en forme d'épitaphes des années 70, où l'invective la plus mordante alterne avec les notes, parfois amères, d'un mémorialisme désenchanté, teinté d'autodérision.

"The Medieval Dream Dictionary. The Somniale Danielis in Literary Manuscripts."
The Medieval Dream Dictionary is composed of entries coming from Latin and vernacular Italian versions of the Somniale Danielis – known as The Dreambook of Daniel the Prophet – which range from the ninth century to the first printed editions through 1550. This manual illustrates more than 3200 years of the history of dream interpretation from Ancient Egypt to today’s web pages. The Dictionary, which gathers this material for the first time, provides not only a better understanding of the medieval and Renaissance oneiric imaginary, but will also allow a practical introduction to the study of literary and artistic dream symbolism.

Il Dizionario dei sogni è formato da voci in latino e in volgare del Somniale Danielis, in italiano Il libro dei sogni del profeta Daniele, e rappresenta oltre 3200 anni di storia di interpretazione dei sogni dall’Antico Egitto, alla Smorfia Napoletana, alle pagine web di oggi. Questo materiale, così riunito per la prima volta, sarà utile non solo ad avere un quadro più dettagliato dell’immaginario onirico medievale che si tramanda nel Rinascimento, ma potrà anche essere utilizzato praticamente nello studio del simbolismo letterario e storico-artistico.

This is the first edited volume that is being published in the United States on the philosopher, artist and writer Carlo Michelstaedter (Gorizia, north Italy, 1887–1910). Studies on Carlo Michelstaedter in the States started with the influential contributions of Daniela Bini ("Carlo Michelstaedter and the Failure of Language", 1992) and Thomas Harrison ("1910: The Emancipation of Dissonance", 1996), which opened critical discussions and new research perspectives: both authors have contributed to this volume. "Storia e storiografia di Carlo Michelstaedter" originated to full the need for further historical analysis on the authors biography and criticism. The volume opens with Sergio Campailla's memories when, in the 1970s, he rediscovered Michelstaedter's largely overlooked documents. Daniela Bini dedicates her essay to the contemporary proliferation of rhetoric, while Thomas Harrison argues that the philosophical concept of authenticity is the one that became explicit in the words of existentialist philosophers after Michelstaedter. Gabriele Zanello reconstructs the biography of Carlo's father, Alberto, and discusses the relationship he had with his son; Valerio Cappozzo traces the editorial path of his poetry, with propositions for its critical edition; Ilvano Caliaro investigates the cultural environment in which Michelstaedter wrote his thesis with a special focus on its preface; Rosalia Peluso concentrates on the philosopher's historicity of life and discusses a note on history that he wrote during his years in Florence; Mimmo Cangiano shows how la 'persuasione' is the ability to resist a specific historical time, and finally Yvonne Hütter gets to the self-destruction of Michelstaedter's philosophical rhetoric.
The appendix offers a wealth of documents and interviews on the author from Gorizia: an unpublished dialogue that Michelstaedter wrote in 1903, when he was a sixteen-year-old high school student the first published article in the United States, one hundred years ago in 1916, by Raffaello Piccoli; interviews with two influential Italian writers, Claudio Magris and Mauro Covacich, both from Trieste, and the hematic analysis of the last page that Carlo wrote, the one with the material traces of the final gesture with which he ended his life at the age of 23.

Giorgio Bassani travelled several times to the United States: first as President of the association Italia Nostra, when he presented the exhibition “Italia da salvare”, then for the publication of his novels in the English language, and finally as Visiting Professor of Italian in California, Illinois, and Indiana universities.
In a letter that he wrote in 1976, Bassani referred to these trips as some of the best moments of his life, that also inspired certain among the most successful poems of the collection In Gran Segreto (1978), which can be read as a poetic journal of his American journeys.
The authors, Roberta Antognini, Valerio Cappozzo, Alessandro Giardino, and Sergio Parussa, discuss different aspects of an overlooked moment in Bassani’s life and literature. Professor Edoardo Lèbano, who invited Bassani at Indiana University in the Seventies, opens this book with his memories, while Linda Nemerow Ulman closes it recalling Bassani as her professor.
Lezioni Americane di Giorgio Bassani tells then not only about what Bassani gave to his American students, but it also evokes America as a source of inspiration for the Italian author.

Fra gli anni Sessanta e Settanta Giorgio Bassani si è recato molte volte negli Stati Uniti: prima come presidente dell’asso­ ciazione Italia Nostra, per presentare la mostra “Italia da salvare”, poi per la pubblicazione delle traduzioni in inglese dei suoi libri, e infine per tenere corsi di letteratura italiana nelle università americane della California, Illinois e Indiana. Ripensando a quei viaggi, in una lettera del 1976 Bassani scri­ ve che il ricordo si colora della luce del mito fino a sembrargli uno dei periodi più felici della sua vita – un periodo che gli ispirerà, tra l’altro, alcuni dei componimenti più belli della raccolta In gran segreto, quasi un diario di viaggio americano in forma poetica.
È proprio di questo segreto, biografico e letterario, che si sono occupati gli autori dei saggi qui raccolti: Roberta Antognini, Valerio Cappozzo, Alessandro Giardino, Sergio Parussa, con un ricordo del prof. Edoardo Lèbano che in- vitò Bassani all’Indiana University, e di una sua studentessa, Linda Nemerow Ulman.
Le lezioni del titolo non sono da intendersi solo come una riflessione su quel che Bassani poteva insegnare all’Ameri­ ca – le mostre, i corsi universitari, le conferenze – ma anche come uno studio di quel che l’America poteva dare a Bassani: la lezione letteraria e morale appresa dallo scrittore ferrarese durante i suoi brevi ma intensi soggiorni oltreoceano.

Membre de l’Institut de France (Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres) et ancien directeur de l’Institut de Recherche et d’Histoire des Textes (CNRS), Jacques Dalarun est un des médiévistes français les plus renommés en France et à l’étranger. Ses recherches allient histoire sociale et culturelle, codicologie, philologie et historiographie, en particulier dans le domaine de la sainteté au Moyen Âge, de Robert d’Arbrissel à François et Claire d’Assise, en passant par de nombreux autres saints et saintes, d’Italie notamment.

Sa production nombreuse présente trois caractéristiques principales. D’abord, ses recherches se fondent presque toujours sur la découverte et l’édition critique de sources médiévales inconnues: fin de la Vie de Robert d’Arbrissel, statuts originaux de Fontevraud, Vies abrégées de Bernard de Tiron et d’Hugues de Cluny, miracles de Bérard évêque des Marses, de Micheline de Pesaro, de Giovanni Gueruli de Rimini, plusieurs vies liturgiques de François d’Assise, divers poèmes et traités des Clarisses de Foligno, et surtout, en 2014, la Vie de notre bienheureux père François par Thomas de Celano, la 2e plus ancienne biographie du saint d’Assise. Ensuite, elles aiment prendre la forme de vastes entreprises collectives, dans lesquelles Jacques Dalarun manifeste un rare talent pour faire travailler en bonne harmonie les personnalités les plus diverses, dans les disciplines les plus complémentaires, de la codicologie à l’historiographie la plus récente en passant par la critique textuelle, la critique historique, la traduction. Enfin, elles s’accompagnent toujours d’une exigence de réflexion sur les procédures et les méthodes de l’historien médiéviste. C’est dans cet esprit qu’a été conçu le présent volume: les auteurs sont des savants, principalement de France, d’Italie et des Etats-Unis – et aussi du Canada, du Royaume-Uni et d’Israël – qui ont travaillé avec Jacques Dalarun et qui souhaitent apporter, dans les champs d’étude qu’ils ont labourés avec lui, une réflexion originale sur les méthodes dans la recherche, principalement en histoire religieuse et culturelle du Moyen Âge.

Au cours de plus de 3200 ans, l’interprétation des rêves est restée étonnamment cohérente, montrant que lorsque la rationalité est neutralisée, l’être humain se découvre égal à lui-même. Le déchiffrement des rêves a affecté chaque société qui s’efforce de saisir leur potentiel divinatoire et de tirer profit de la compréhension d’un tel événement symbolique. Dans les temps anciens, au Moyen Âge et à la Re-naissance, les rêves servaient à interpréter la réalité environnante, externe à l’individu, tandis que de-puis le XXe siècle, avec l'avènement de la psychanalyse, ils ont été utilisés pour enquêter sur l’inconscient et en diagnostiquer les névroses. Deux directions d'investigation contraires, externe et interne, qui ont pourtant le même but : celle de rationaliser l'irrationnel.

Petrarch is the poet who above all perfected the original Vulgar Italian tongue, developing its melodious elegance and thus providing a model of verse composition for later writers, both Italian and European. He embodied the original modern intellectual, ready to travel the "world" for his work, eager to meet new colleagues for professional and cultural exchanges, and determined to conduct field research as he uncovered lost texts from the classical tradition.

The Somniale Danielis is a dream manual widely circulated in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It is structured through dream symbols and their concise explanation. Medieval manuscripts of the Somniale—from the ninth century to the end of the fifteenth century—generally bear the same dreams, but show changes in the structure of their entries. The coherence of its symbology throughout several centuries allows for a linguistic analysis across these dream manuals that situates them in specific cultural contexts. This article focuses on two manuscripts, each containing a Latin and an Italian version of the Somniale, and aims to show how the Italian versions develops, and vary from, the Latin texts, as the vernacular versions simplify the language of their source text in order to create shorter entries.

The Somniale Danielis is a manual to dreams and their interpretations, the most popular of its kind in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. It consists of a list of dream symbols arranged in an alphabetical order, and interpreted as portending something good or evil for a dreamer. The system established both quick and easy access to terms, symbols, and their meanings, and functioned as a convenient guide to the interpretation of dreams. It serves, too, as an important tool for understanding medieval literary as well as other dreams, and for identifying and describing traditional dream images. The most remarkable fact about this dream dictionary is that the red thread of dream interpretation remains pretty much unchanged from antiquity to today. This is the very reason why it is used coherently by different poets and scientists in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. Indeed, interpreting one’s own visions was thus a way to position human beings at the center of the universe, after centuries of confinement at the peripheries of creation. The more evident change in the history of dream interpretation occurred at the beginning of twentieth century, when Sigmund Freud started working on dreams considered as a potential tool to investigate the deepest part of our personality and our past, and not as a possible prediction of the future. But even after the birth of psychoanalysis, popular dream-books continued to be considered the best way to interpret dreams.

In the De casibus and in the Genealogie, Bocaccio demonstrated his familiarity with Greek and Latin oneirology, a knowledge that he applies, in conjunction with oneiromancy, in his literary production in order to offer symbols readable to everyone. My study thus analyses the connection between the dream symbols contained in the Somniale Danielis, the most circulated dream manual of the Middle Ages, and in the novelle of the Decameron featuring a dream. Lisabetta da Messina’s dialog in dream with her dead lover, Gabriotto’s goat, as well as the wolf that comes in Talano d’Imola’s dream, are all symbols that can be found in the Somniale.
The MS Vaticano Rossiano 947, examined in this paper, is one of the oldest witnesses with Boccaccio’s text of the Decameron, and it was composed by Domenico Caronelli from Conegliano, Veneto, in northern Italy, in 1395. Interestingly, Caronelli copied the Somniale Danielis right after the Decameron, confirming the hypothesis of a meaningful connection linking poetry production in medieval Italy with the circulation of dream sciences.

Nel De casibus e nelle Genealogie Boccaccio ragiona sul significato delle visioni notturne e sulle categorie di veridicità o falsità attribuite loro già dall’onirologia greca. Nelle sue opere letterarie applica alla narrazione i precetti dell’oniromanzia popolare con il fine di offrire simboli riconoscibili da tutti. Il dialogo con il defunto amante sognato da Lisabetta da Messina, la capra da Gabriotto e il lupo sognato da Talano d’Imola, sono voci presenti nel Somniale Danielis, o in volgare Libro dei sogni di Daniele Profeta, il più diffuso manuale d’interpretazione dal IV secolo d.C. a oggi.
Dal punto di vista materiale la tradizione manoscritta dimostra chiaramente quanto importante fosse l’unione della letteratura con i manuali d’interpretazione dei sogni. Domenico Caronelli, copista del cod. Vaticano Rossiano 947, fa seguire a uno dei primi testimoni del Decameron, il Libro dei sogni di Daniele Profeta in volgare, guidando il lettore verso un esercizio interpretativo che parte dai simboli onirici, per arrivare a stimolare una lettura polisemica di tutta la narrazione.

The Somniale Danielis is one of the most common dream manuals of the Middle Ages and has been translated from Greek into numerous vernacular languages, both in Europe and the Middle East. However, its Italian translation has been overlooked, even though it is part of important and well-known codices such as the Laurentian MSS Martelli 12 and Tempi 2, and the MS Vaticano Rossiano 947. During the fourteenth century, the church strongly opposed books of prognostic nature, therefore copyists tended to omit the name of the biblical prophet in order to avoid censorship. These codices are miscellanies that bear major examples of early Italian literature, in which dreams and visions play a significant role. The material association of these literary texts with the Dreambook of Daniel, transcribed in the appendix of this essay, underlines the exegetical goal that copyists had in mind, as they helped readers in their interpretation of oneiric symbols.

Delle numerose traduzioni dal greco ai maggiori volgari europei e mediorientali del Somniale Danielis, il più comune prontuario dei sogni durante il medioevo, quella in italiano rimaneva ignota pur se presente in manoscritti importanti e conosciuti come i codici Laurenziani Martelli 12, Tempi 2, e il cod. Vaticano Rossiano 947. A causa dell’opposizione ecclesiastica ai libri di natura prognostica i copisti, nel corso del XIV sec., omettono il nome del profeta biblico nel titolo per sfuggire alla censura, compromettendone l’attribuzione. Questi codici hanno la particolarità di essere miscellanee in cui sono presenti gli esempi più notevoli della lettatura italiana delle origini dove i sogni e le visioni svolgono un ruolo significativo. L’associazione materiale di queste opere con il Libro dei sogni di Daniele, trascritto in appendice al saggio, offriva al lettore un aiuto interpretativo dei passaggi onirici.

In MS Vaticano Rossiano 947, Boccaccio’s Decameron is followed by the Dream-book of Daniel (Somniale Danielis), a manual of the interpretation of the most common dream symbols in the Middle Ages. The copyist of this codex, Domenico Caronelli da Conegliano was educated in a domestic and cultural environment that placed importance on the oneirocritic theories circulating in fourteenth century Italy, the same theories that inspired Dante and Boccaccio for the oneiric episodes of their masterpieces. The transcription of the dream-book in the codex Vaticano Rossiano 947 closes this essay, and includes a critical apparatus bearing variants belonging to two other versions of the Dream-book of Daniel in vernacular Italian which appear in MS Laurenziano Martelli 12 and MS Laurenziano Tempi 2. These dream manuals lend a key to decipher the visions and dreams taking place in Boccaccio’s novelle. Within the same Vatican manuscript, the material association of the texts – Decameron and the Somniale Danielis – confirms the existence of a fruitful link between dream and literature.

Il cod. Vaticano Rossiano 947 contiene il Decameron e il Libro dei sogni di Daniele, un prontuario di interpretazione dei più comuni simboli onirici. Il copista, Domenico Caronelli da Conegliano, si forma in un ambiente familiare e culturale interessato alle teorie onirocritiche in circolazione nel Trecento, le stesse usate da Dante come da Boccaccio per la costruzione degli episodi onirici. In appendice al saggio è trascritto il libro dei sogni presente nel cod. Rossiano 947 con un apparato critico costituito dalle varianti contenute negli altri due mss. trecenteschi che contengono il Libro dei sogni di Daniele in volgare, i Laurenziani cod. Martelli 12 e cod. Tempi 2. Consultando questi prontuari è possibile interpretare le visioni che hanno luogo nelle novelle, confermando anche a livello materiale l’associazione tra sogno e letteratura.

Among the letters that Sciascia received from his American correspondents, we find the transcription of a diary kept by some volunteers of the Council of Federated Organization (COFO), a coalition of national and regional organizations working for the civil rights movement, which details the racial segregation endured by the African-Americans in Mississippi. Other letters reveal information about several dossiers opened by the FBI, which followed interceptions and investigations of American writers such as Faulkner and Hemingway, that Sciascia highly esteemed. Thanks to Herbert Mitgang we also discover the existence of an FBI dossier on Il giorno della civetta (published in New York in 1964 under the title Ma!a Vendetta). These direct testimonies oer us a vivid picture of an America of contrasts and changes, in a much more detailed and truthful way than Sciascia could have gleaned in national or international newspapers.

Dagli anni Cinquanta in poi Leonardo Sciascia intrattiene corrispondenze regolari con diversi intellettuali statunitensi, scrittori, traduttori, redattori, professori universitari o semplici lettori ammirati dalla sua produzione narrativa. Dal 1964 i suoi romanzi cominciano a essere pubblicati con successo in America e dal ’68 viene invitato a scrivere sul «New York Times», non di mafia, ma di come considera alcuni accadimenti attraverso l’occhio dello scrittore. Dalle lettere che gli arrivano, Sciascia riceve un’immagine nitida dei diversi aspetti culturali e politico-sociali degli Stati Uniti.

Tra i vari rapporti internazionali intrattenuti da Leonardo Sciascia, stanno emergendo nuovi materiali di studio a cui l’Associazione Amici di Leonardo Sciascia dedica un progetto di ricerca incentrato sugli scambi con il continente americano. Di pari passo con l’interesse per la letteratura statunitense – nato durante l’ascesa del fascismo come modello di confronto per vari scrittori italiani che hanno tradotto e letto con passione i romanzi di Faulkner, Hemingway e Steinbeck – Sciascia traduce, discute in articoli ed edita la nuova letteratura americana, fino a intrattenere corrispondenze con diversi scrittori e intellettuali d’oltreoceano.

The Heritage Collection in Dunedin City Library, on New Zealand’s South Island, preserve hundreds of folders with unpublished materials related to the collector Alfred Hamish Reed, a British emigrant to New Zealand in the late XIX century. Reed’s collection includes personal papers, the owner’s private and official correspondence, as well as objects that belonged to him and his family. The library also preserves hundreds of autograph letters owned by Reed. Among them, the French and Italian letters are of great interest; some are by eminent figures, such as Verne, Dumas, Garibaldi, Mazzini, and Gioberti. Both the exhibition entitled European Treasure: A.H. Reed’s French and Italian Autograph Letters (October 2014-January 2015) and the related catalogue offered a profile of Reed as a passionate collector. They also provided precious insights into relations among disparate authors, personalities, and their writings in the late XIX and early XX centuries. In doing so, they guided visitors and readers across several European countries and New Zealand, all of which were in search of their national identities at that time.

La Heritage Collection della Dunedin City Library (South Island, Nuova Zelanda) conserva centinaia di cartelle contenenti materiale inedito relativo al collezionista Alfred Hamish Reed, emigrato dalla Gran Bretagna in Nuova Zelanda alla fine del XIX secolo. La raccolta include documenti personali, la corrispondenza privata e quella pubblica della sua casa editrice, nonché alcuni oggetti appartenuti a lui e alla sua famiglia. La biblioteca possiede anche diverse lettere autografe collezionate da Reed, fra le quali si annoverano lettere francesi di Verne e Dumas fils, per esempio, e italiane di Garibaldi, Mazzini e Gioberti. La mostra European Treasure: A.H. Reed’s French and Italian Autograph Letters  (ottobre 2014-gennaio 2015) e il relativo catalogo hanno ricostruito il profilo dell’appassionato collezionista Reed, fornendo informazioni preziose sui rapporti fra i vari autori e personalità politiche o artistiche alla fine del XIX e all’inizio del XX secolo. In tal modo, ai visitatori quanto ai lettori è stata offerta una panoramica storica sulle nazioni europee e sulla Nuova Zelanda in un periodo durante il quale questi paesi erano in cerca di una loro identità nazionale.

Nel centenario della prima pubblicazione delle poesie di Carlo Michelstaedter ne tornano alla luce due del gennaio e febbraio del 1903. Scritte per essere regalate al padre, il tono scherzoso e ironico, insieme a un modulo compositivo fedele ai modelli classici della letteratura italiana, rendono questi versi delle interessanti prime prove di un’attività letteraria che rimarrà costante nella sua breve vita.

Il 22 ottobre del 1905 Carlo Michelstaedter inizia il viaggio in Italia che lo porterà a frequentare il Regio Istituto di Studi Superiori Pratici e di Perfezionamento a Firenze. Questo contributo presenta una parte poco conosciuta della sua biografia, resa nota grazie al ritrovamento dei documenti degli archivi dell’Istituto, attraverso i quali si analizza il primo anno accademico per individuare, nei programmi dei corsi, gli impulsi culturali che hanno segnato la genesi del suo pensiero filosofico. Il cammino di Carlo Michelstaedter si differenzia da quello dei contemporanei mitteleuropei per la destinazione geografica, ma l’esito della ricerca sarà simile, come l’atteggiamento etico con il quale affronta la vita.

«Critici si nasce, poeti si diventa» confidava Roberto Longhi al giovane Bassani studente universitario, frase che si addice perfettamente allo scrittore ferrarese che comincia a comporre versi dopo un lungo periodo di lettura dei classici italiani e degli ermetici in particolare, come si riscontra nelle sue diverse composizioni. «Montale mi ha insegnato a essere vero» mentre «l’Arte è Ungaretti», afferma in un’intervista e nei suoi saggi critici. I due poeti, infatti, si trovano a essere citati, più o meno esplicitamente, sin dai versi di Storia dei poveri amanti a quelli di In gran segreto.
Questo contributo ricostruisce il percorso letterario che ha portato Bassani alla poesia, con particolare attenzione alle forme espressive ermetiche che tessono una trama lungo la sua evoluzione lirica.

«Critics are born, poets are made» used to say Roberto Longhi to Giorgio Bassani when he was a college student. A sentence which perfectly fits the writer from Ferrara who started to compose verses after a long period dedicated to reading Italian classics, as well as poets from the Ermetismo, in particular. In an interview and in his critical essays, Bassani affirms «Montale has taught me how to be true» while «Art is Ungaretti». The two poets are indeed cited more or less explicitly, from Storia dei poveri amanti to In gran segreto. This contribution traces the literary path that brought Bassani to poetry. It will give special focus to the expressive forms of the Ermetismo that weave a thread throughout Bassani’s lyrical evolution.

Negli ultimi tempi la poesia di Giorgio Bassani sta suscitando interesse tra i lettori ricevendo la giusta attenzione critica. Vedremo presto la riedizione delle sue poesie a cura di Anna Dolfi (Feltrinelli), evento editoriale di centrale importanza, e la pubblicazione del libro di saggi Dal particolare all’universale. I libri di poesia di Giorgio Bassani (a cura di Valerio Cappozzo, Giorgio Pozzi Editore -https://www.academia.edu/38457244/Dal_particolare_alluniversale._I_libri_di_poesia_di_Giorgio_Bassani_a_cura_di_Valerio_Cappozzo_Giorgio_Pozzi_Editore_Ravenna_2019_forthcoming_).
In questo articolo, oltre a prepararci alle novità significative sul genere letterario “altro” coltivato da Bassani sin dalla giovinezza, si ragiona sulla definizione che lo scrittore stesso dà di poeta. A ben guardare, non possiamo che considerare la poesia essenziale per la sua scrittura narrativa, difatti anticipa sempre la pubblicazione rispetto ai romanzi. Se è stato poeta chi «aveva una cosa profonda da esprimere», va da sé che l’intera opera bassaniana deve essere letta sotto questa luce, partendo dai suoi versi per arrivare a capire la genesi del racconto.

Il giorno del centesimo anniversario della nascita di Giorgio Bassani, il 4 marzo del 2016, è uscito in libreria il volume miscellaneo Lezioni americane di Giorgio Bassani, pubblicato da Giorgio Pozzi Editore nella collana “Bassaniana” diretta da Antonello Perli. Patrocinato dal Comitato Nazionale per le Celebrazioni del centenario della nascita dello scrittore ferrarese e dalla Fondazione Giorgio Bassani, con il contributo della stessa Fondazione, della University of Mississippi e della St. Lawrence University, è un libro, arrivato nel 2018 alla seconda edizione, che rivela un periodo sconosciuto della biografia di Bassani. Della sua esperienza di professore di Letteratura Italiana negli Stati Uniti se ne sapeva molto poco pur se, ritornato a Roma, scrive in una lettera: «il periodo che ho trascorso a Bloomington mi appare come uno dei più felici della mia vita».

La poesia e la narrativa di Giorgio Bassani trovano lettori attenti e interessati anche in Canada e negli Stati Uniti soprattutto del sud, dove la denuncia del fascismo e della persecuzione sugli esseri umani viene letta in relazione alla storia degli afro-americani. Come in Bassani, così anche nei writers del sud, troviamo l’impegno costante dell’essere testimoni, di incarnare la memoria, di riaffermare la storia del proprio tempo attraverso l’atto della scrittura. Delle poesie di Giorgio Bassani sono tradotte e pubblicate in Nord America negli anni Cinquanta e negli anni Ottanta. In Canada escono, prima ancora che in Italia, alcuni componimenti di In gran segreto e, nel 1982, il libro Rolls Royce and Other Poems. Dall’altra parte dell’oceano Bassani ha lasciato un’impronta con le sue visite e la sua esperienza di insegnamento, tracce che mantengono ancora viva la memoria dello scrittore ferrarese.

«On the Other Side of the Moon». Giorgio Bassani’s Poems Between the United States and Canada.

Bassani’s poetry and fiction has found many attentive readers in Canada and in the United States, especially in its Southern states, where Bassani’s denunciation of fascism and of persecutions may be connected in some ways with the history of Afro-Americans. In the southern authors, just as in Bassani, the writer is constantly engaged as a witness, who embodies memory itself, and revisits his own time through the very act of writing. Some of Giorgio Bassani’s poems were translated and published in the United States first in the fifties and then in the eighties. While in Canada some poems belonging to In Gran Segreto appeared even before than they did in Italy, and the book, Rolls Royce and Other Poems, was published in 1982. On the other side of the Atlantic, Bassani left important marks with his teaching experiences, marks that still today keep his memory alive.

«De l’autre côté de la lune». Les poésies de Giorgio Bassani entre États-Unis et Canada.

La poésie et les romans de Giorgio Bassani ont trouvé de nombreux lecteurs attentifs et intéressés au Canada et aux États Unis, surtout dans le Sud, où on a pu comparer sa dénonciation du fascisme et des persécutions à celle subies par les Afro-Américains dans leur pays. Cette dénonciation trouve un écho dans les témoignages des écrivains du Sud qui incarnent la mémoire elle-même et qui réaffirment leur temps à travers l’acte de l’écriture. Certaines poésies de Bassani ont été traduites et publiées aux États-Unis dans les années cinquante et puis dans les années quatre-vingt, alors que certaines des compositions appartenant à In gran segreto voient le jour au Canada avant même de paraître en Italie. Enfin en 1982, est publié, toujours au Canada, le livre Rolls Royce and Other Poems. Bassani a laissé de l’autre côté de l’océan un trace visible grâce à ses visites et son expérience d’enseignement, une trace qui maintient sa mémoire encore vivante aujourd’hui.

Se si potesse aggiungere una settima categoria alle sei proposte nelle Lezioni americane, sarebbe quella dell’invisibilità a meglio definire l’atteggiamento di Calvino nei confronti dell’editoria e della stampa statunitensi. In Nord America cerca nuovi scrittori da tradurre per Einaudi ma non intrattiene particolari scambi epistolari con gli intellettuali, editori o giornalisti come, per esempio, hanno fatto Sciascia, Bassani, Pivano e Soldati. Le tracce lasciate da Calvino sono rare e concise, ma non per questo meno efficaci. Plague Literature in the Time of Coronavirus
an Online Symposium for the Quarantined

Mercoledì 11 dicembre alle 17.30, la Società Dante Alighieri organizza a Palazzo Firenze un “dialogo a tre voci” su Luigi Pirandello e Francesco De Sanctis. Gli interlocutori saranno Giulio Ferroni, Professore emerito della “Sapienza” di Roma, Rino Caputo, Professore emerito dell’Università di “Tor Vergata” di Roma, e Valerio Cappozzo, Professore associato presso l’University of Mississippi.

Dopo l’intervento di apertura del prof. Alessandro Masi, Segretario Generale della Società Dante Alighieri, il dialogo punterà sul rapporto tra il grande critico e il grande scrittore cui la Dante ha dedicato le 19 domande su Luigi Pirandello. Di nuvole e vento con il prof. Caputo e 19 domande su Francesco De Sanctis. Il canto della ragione, con il prof. Caputo (entrambi a cura di Valeria Noli).

«Noi lamentiamo che alla nostra letteratura manchi il Dramma, e sul riguardo si dicono tante cose e tante altre se ne propongono, conforti, esortazioni, additamenti, progetti, opera vana». È un giovane Luigi Pirandello, ancora studente a Bonn tra gli anni Ottanta e Novanta dell’Ottocento, che si esprime come se fosse già un protagonista della scena culturale. L’atteggiamento sarà ripreso da Antonio Gramsci in un Quaderno dal Carcere del 1934: «…è molto interessante questa prosa, al di là di quello che vuol dire immediatamente, certamente colpisce questa concezione della vita e dell’uomo, l’energia contenuta in questo passaggio».

Il giovane e brillante Pirandello era forse familiare con insegnanti, insegnamenti e testi che si facevano eredi attivi di De Sanctis. Con lui condivideva tra l’altro l’avversione per la sequenza “tardorinascimentale retorica, barocca, secentista, il guardaroba dell’eloquenza” ed entrambi consideravano l’utilità sociale della letteratura in quanto rivelatrice di una realtà più profonda che supera i limiti del vero e del convenzionale. Appartenevano a famiglie di patrioti, ma il primo si collocava sulla realizzazione dell’Unità d’Italia mentre il secondo, pur nostalgico dell’energia proto-risorgimentale, registrava la “bancarotta del patriottismo”.

Nel confronto tra “i vecchi e i giovani”, Pirandello si dimostra dunque un nostro contemporaneo, anche se il suo distacco dal passato non è radicale ma risulta elaborato attraverso l’approccio e l’attualità dei temi trattati. La modernità di Pirandello si apprezza pienamente solo tornando a De Sanctis e alla sua opera, strumento per superare la comunicazione superficiale e trovare una verità più profonda sotto il velo del luogo comune.

In the twentieth century several notable scholars commented on the influence of Muslim religious literature on episodes in the Divine Comedy, which suggested that the legendary text had Muslim inspiration.  However, this topic has always been controversial on both Eastern and Western sides.

This lecture presents the results of research on the transmission of the Somniale Danielis in Latin and Italian manuscript sources. My work presents a dictionary of medieval dream symbols, and is based on editions of codices in Latin and Italian, going from the 9th to the beginning of 16th century, and it also includes the first Latin and vernacular printed versions of the Dictionary from 1475 to 1550. The form of the work has its origins in early 4th century A.D. Greek manuscripts, and thrived in the Middle Ages mainly in Arabic, Latin, and the European languages.

This dictionary of dream symbols contains around 650 different symbols, each of which has many variations, for a total of around 5000 possible interpretations. Such materials can help advance our knowledge of medieval and early modern creativity in relation to the interlinked worlds of imagination and reality.

Il laboratorio di Giorgio Bassani, messo in luce nel convegno promosso dalla Fondazione Bassani, tenutosi a Ferrara-Bologna nel 2018, conclusivo delle celebrazioni del centenario della nascita dello scrittore (Laboratorio Bassani. L'officina delle opere, a cura di Angela Siciliano, Premessa di Paola Bassani, Introduzione di Paola Italia e Cristina Montagnani, Ravenna, Giorgio Pozzi Editore, 2018), ha rivelato tesori straordinari: dagli avantesti delle storie ferraresi, al dattiloscritto degli Occhiali d'oro, dal manoscritto e dattiloscritto del Giardino dei Finzi Contini, alle scritture e riscritture poetiche, fino alle sceneggiature, alcune delle quali inedite. E una serie di corrispondenze con i maggiori letterati del Novecento, da Calvino a Gadda, da Bertolucci a Fortini, che testimoniano il ruolo centrale giocato da Bassani nell'aprire la letteratura italiana a una dimensione europea e mantenerla contemporaneamente legata alla tradizione. Ora che quelle carte sono venute alla luce, il gruppo di lavoro che ha dato vita al Laboratorio Bassani (comitato scientifico:) torna a studiare le sue opere riflettendo, in particolare, sulle modalità di un commento, nelle forme dell'autocommento delle interviste (molte delle quali del tutto sconosciute) o delle osservazioni alla letteratura degli amici scrittori e poeti, ma anche di un commento moderno ai racconti, i romanzi e le poesie di Bassani. Per fare rivivere peri nuovi lettori situazioni, personaggi, vicende perdute nella storia, ma anche per restituire la profondità e molteplicità di significati dei suoi testi.

In occasione della consegna del Premio “Robert Nissim Haggiag”, giunto quest’anno alla quarta edizione, la Fondazione Giorgio Bassani, con il contributo del Mibac, promuove un convegno, con vari esperti di studi bassaniani, nel quale fare il punto sulle novità emerse dal riordino dell’archivio di Giorgio Bassani. Questo convegno ha l’obiettivo di mostrare, attraverso una discussione critica sui contributi pervenuti in concorso, quanto feconda e viva sia l’attenzione per l’opera di Bassani da parte di studiosi delle giovani generazioni, con ricerche di prima mano (anche con adeguato uso delle carte della Fondazione Bassani) e con risultati critici e storici di notevole rilievo. During the fifth and sixth Crusades, Francis of Assisi and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II traveled to Egypt in order to meet with the Kurdish Sultan ‘Al-Malik al-Kāmil. These encounters marked an exceptional historical event: a ten years truce in the war between Christians and Muslims.

Dopo aver ricostruito il periodo statunitense con la pubblicazione del volume Lezioni americane di Giorgio Bassani (Giorgio Pozzi Editore 2016), il Professor Valerio Cappozzo della University of Mississippi si è messo sulle tracce di chi ha reso possibili le tre visite dello scrittore ferrarese in diverse università canadesi tra il 1978 e il 1980. In Canada, grazie all’insegnamento della propria opera in prosa e in versi, Bassani ha intrapreso un viaggio insieme didattico, stilistico e spirituale del quale ne verranno evidenziati gli aspetti più importanti grazie anche alla proiezione di filmati inediti.

Giorgio Bassani ha insegnato la propria opera in versi e in prosa nel semestre primaverile del 1976 a Bloomington, Indiana, dove ora la figlia Paola si recherà per la prima volta per incontrare il Professor Lèbano che invitò lo scrittore ferrarese, esperienza documentata nel libro a cura di Valerio Cappozzo.

Dreams and their interpretation are timeless. In the Middle Ages the science of dreams appear to gather into its sphere some traditional beliefs that may transcend social classes and specific moments in time. This is why it persisted almost unchanged in its structure since the Egyptian dream-books until today, despite the psychoanalytical theories. Dreams helped to understand better reality, in fact they were used coherently by the most important poets and scientists in the Middle Ages, in the Renaissance, and beyond.

This lecture analyzes the theory and interpretation of dreams from the classical antiquity to their literary application and structural consequences in Dante Alighieri’s Vita Nova and Divina Commedia. After the mysticism of the thirteenth century, Alighieri tried to insert the visionary theme in his works to improve the modern style of the “dolce stil novo”.
The pretext of the Vita Nova is a dream that, matched with other visions, marks the youth journey through the highest heavenly vision in his masterpiece. The first dream of the Vita Nova announces Beatrice’s death, through an enigmatic symbolism created to receive the interpretations of the other poets. But now on, Alighieri is the only that uses the oneiric element as a base of his work, and this is the main difference with the “bella scola”. In fact the three dreams in the Purgatorio, now mature and not used as an interpretative request, form the fundamental structure of the ascensional path to the earthly Paradise, where Dante meets Beatrice after her death (death that the first dream of the Vita Nova announced).
The author’s dream is to connect the secret of the fedeli d’amore with a mystical approach to enter much more deeply into the vision of reality. The expedient of dreaming is the new proposal of his poetic. It is the symbol of the necessity of achievement within the journey in its ambiguity: is it a dream or a vision?

This talk would like to sum up the main ideas that will represent the core of the exhibition: I will then present briefly the collection itself, giving more details on some of the most interesting pieces that will be on display. I will also discuss Alfred H. Reed’s profile as a book collector, together with the interesting “collecting relationship” that he had with his brother Frank, well known as collector of Alexandre Dumas. This relationship can be revealed through hundreds of letter the two brothers exchanged, a correspondence which is now preserved at the Auckland City Library.

The Heritage Collections of the Dunedin City Library held a cache of unpublished autograph letters in Italian and French that have never been worked on. These letters are held as part of the Alfred and Isabel Reed Collection, which includes a collection of over 5,000 autograph letters and documents from the sixteenth to early twentieth century.
As a way of bringing these letters to the attention of the scholarly community and general public, the idea of designing an exhibition in the Library’s Reed Gallery seemed the most appropriate way to go about promoting and these hitherto unknown letters, some of which are signed by important personalities of Italian and French politics and literature.

This exhibition would like to continue Alfred H. Reed’s undertakings, and would like to pursue the same spirit with which Alfred assembled his collection: «It was during the latter half of the 1920s that I formed the definitive purpose of building up a collection which should eventually be given to the Dunedin Public Library, I confided my intention to Mr W. B. McEwan, Dunedin’s first city librarian, and at his request began to exhibit autograph letters in the library, changing them every week».
As Reed stated, these letters represent a unique moment of European history through the individuality of each writer and recipient: «every autograph letter is unique; it is inseparably linked with a certain person, retaining something of the individuality of the writer, with sometimes an added interest by reason of the personality of the recipient».

Technology has advanced greatly and is shaping all branches of knowledge, including the Humanities. Within this rapidly evolving context, AdI intends to devote its 43 rd monographic volume to Digital Humanities (DH) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In addition to the peer-reviewed scholarly articles, each volume of Annali d'Italianistica features Italian Bookshelf, an online section comprising hundreds of academic book reviews and updates, providing the most comprehensive panorama of the new directions in the field of Italian Studies.

Technology has advanced greatly and is shaping all branches of knowledge, including the Humanities. Within this rapidly evolving context, AdI intends to devote its 43rd monographic volume to Digital Humanities (DH) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The volume will be edited by prominent scholars, and each has formulated a specific section, whose description follows. We are interested in contributions that address a specific theoretical or practical dimension of the DH and AI debate, such as, for example: how has DH enhanced Italian Studies in scholarship and teaching; how is Italian Studies responding, reacting, and contributing to the challenges brought about by these technological advancements? Are there concrete examples of generative AI applications adopted in the classroom or in research that can provide models or guidance at this stage? Which specific aspects of Italian Studies are or will be affected the most, such as language/culture instruction, theoretical or technological approaches to traditional issues, career paths, etc.? Are there Italian writers, artists, or scholars who have tackled the challenges posed by emerging technologies and who can help us face the present challenges?

Annali d'italianistica, Inc., was founded at the University of Notre Dame in 1983 and was sponsored by the Department of Romance Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1989 until 2017. Hosted by JSTOR, Annali d'italianistica is an independent journal of Italian Studies managed and edited by an international team of scholars. Annali is listed among the top tier journals (class A, area 10) by the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR).

With the one-hundredth anniversary of Fascism’s seizure of power approaching, the time seems ripe for reconsidering how Italian culture has negotiated the legacy of its totalitarian past. Essays are sought for a special issue of Annali d’Italianistica Volume 41 (2023) that will explore the representation of Fascism in Italian cultural production from the postwar years to the present. The volume aims to critically assess how literature, cinema, and visual arts have represented and are representing the Fascist past and how they have contributed to constructing a memory of the dictatorship.
Guest editors seek contributions that examine the representation of Fascism in specific cultural products (including but not limited to literature, cinema, and visual arts). Intermedial analyses are particularly welcome.

Annali d'Italianistica, founded in 1983, is conducting a search for mid-career, dynamic colleagues, with broad research interests, interested in collaborating as co-editors with Dino S. Cervigni, the journal's founder and editor in chief, Valerio Cappozzo, Monica Jansen, and Brandon Essary, co-editors in chief, to produce the journal's annual monographic volume with the aim of taking over, within 2-3 years, all the tasks carried out by the journal's founder. The organization of Annali is well known to Italianists. After selecting a topic (to be approved by the editors in chief and the board of co-editors) two or three years ahead of time, guest editors solicit, vet all essays, and submit them to the editors in chief for final approval. With the assistance of the board of co-editors and other scholars, the editors in chief, after reading all submitted essays, approve and make final recommendations to the guest editors. The new co-editors will work closely with the editors in chief, familiarize themselves with all pertinent editorial tasks, and eventually share in or take over certain tasks of the editors in chief, making sure that the journal will continue the scholarly mission it has carried out since its inception in 1983. Interest in editing and computer technology will be highly appreciated. The position may on average require 3-4 hours of work a week. Two colleagues who work well together and have already collaborated may submit a joint proposal and share responsibilities. Essays are sought for a special issue of Annali d'Italianistica (2020) entitled "Nation(s) and Translation." Contributions that explore how translation, as a cultural practice, has been inherently tied in Italian literary and cultural history to the politics of nationhood are welcome as are contextualized investigations and debates over the intersection of nation-building and translation by intellectuals from different periods of Italian cultural history.

The Paleography Seminars will involve methodological and practical components of Latin and vernacular paleography taught by experts in the field from a variety of Italian universities. The teaching program will include propaedeutic online sessions in May and eight days in Italy (Rome, Florence and Certaldo) introductions to the major Florentine and Roman libraries; paleography classes using Latin and vernacular manuscripts, and transcription practice. Participants should be ABA members, and have good knowledge of the Italian language as the seminars will be conducted in Italian.

The American Boccaccio Association announces the 2020 GIUSEPPE VELLI PRIZE for the best graduate student essay on Boccaccio, the best undergraduate essay on Boccaccio, and a new category: the best creative, performance or translation work on Boccaccio.
Thanks to the support of an anonymous donor, the American Boccaccio Association can continue the annual prize competition for the best graduate student essay on a subject related to the life or works of Giovanni Boccaccio. The Giuseppe Velli Prize of three hundred dollars ($300) will be awarded to the best essay submitted by a graduate student in any American or Canadian University or by anyone not currently enrolled as a graduate student, provided that he or she has received the degree of M.A. or Ph.D. within one year of submission. The winning essay will also be automatically considered for publication in «Heliotropia, a forum for Boccaccio research and interpretation» (http://www.heliotropia.org/).
Thanks to the support of another anonymous donor, the American Boccaccio Association is happy to continue offering a Prize in a second category: The Giuseppe Velli Undergraduate Prize of two hundred ($200) dollars will be awarded to the best essay submitted by an undergraduate student in any American or Canadian University, or by anyone not currently enrolled as an undergraduate student, provided that the work was completed as an undergraduate and that he or she has received an undergraduate degree within one year of submission.
For both essay prizes, the author should provide a cover page (as the first page of the file) containing the author’s name, email, mailing and email addresses, the title of the essay/project/performance and institutional affiliation. The author’s name should not appear on the essay title page (to follow the cover page) or on any other page of the submission. Quotations from Boccaccio’s works should be cited in the original language, and the format of the essay should conform to MLA Style Sheet guidelines.
All submissions must be made by email attachment in PDF and sent to the Secretary of the American Boccaccio Association (Maggie Fritz-Morkin, mfritzm@email.unc.edu). No hardcopy submissions will be accepted. The essays should be no longer than 7500 words, including bibliography and other related material.
Thanks to the support of a third anonymous donor, the American Boccaccio Association is happy to add a third category to the Velli Prize: The Giuseppe Velli Prize of Creative projects of two hundred ($200) will be awarded to the best creative performance or translation project related to Boccaccio’s works by a graduate or undergraduate student in any North American University. Materials can be submitted as digital recording or other media file.
Submissions will be judged by a committee appointed by the President of the ABA. The committee will consist of a Chair, one member of the ABA executive, and one other member of the ABA. The results will be announced in early autumn and published in the fall issue of the ABA Newsletter. While the essays remain the intellectual property of their authors, the submitted texts will not be returned to them.
The deadline for submission, for all categories, is June 15, 2021.
