In the years of the pontificate of Leo XII (1823-1829) and the reign of Francis I of Bourbon (1825-1830), the choice of the successor of the deceased Mgr. Alessandro Tommasini, Archbishop of Reggio Calabria from 1818 to 1826, represented a very delicate moment in the relations between the Holy See and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. When the news of the appointment of Don Giovanni Ramirez (1758-1831), Dean of the Cathedral Chapter of Reggio and member of a powerful family of Spanish origin, became public, ancient and ill-subsided internal grudges among the most important families awoke strongly. In fact, a large number of complaints against Ramirez immediately began to arrive in Rome and Naples; the infamous accusations ranged from corruption to immorality, from simony to belonging to secret societies, from building abuses to intimidation for territorial control. The main suspect in the sacrilegious handling was the rich Marquis Vincenzo Ramirez, nephew of the nominated Archbishop, accused of having invested an immense amount of money and having obtained the designation of his old uncle «by weight of gold». Despite repeated attempts at defense, Leo XII and Francis I, by mutual agreement, preferred to adopt a line of severity and rigor, forcing Don Giovanni Ramirez to definitively renounce the appointment and episcopal consecration.

During the first years of reign of Ferdinand II of Bourbon, the city of Naples and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies were pervaded by various political problems and were upset by natural disasters and a ferocious cholera epidemic. As in previous similar occasions, the Neapolitan people tried to defeat fears through their visceral devotion to Saint Januarius and the numerous patron saints of the city. Therefore, in 1835, at the proposal of Don Placido Baccher, rector of the Neapolitan church of the Gesù Vecchio, it was decided to rely on the protection of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, whose cult was widespread among the population. With the full support of the King and the Royal Family and thanks also to the effective interventions of the Neapolitan governmental and administrative bodies and the direct interest of cardinal Filippo Giudice Caracciolo, archbishop of Naples, the Holy See approved with an urgent procedure the appointment of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga as “patronus minus principalis” of the city and archdiocese of Naples. The event was celebrated with solemn festivities and religious ceremonies, culminating with the placement of the silver bust of the new patron saint in the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of Saint Januarius.

After the initial diffidence, the diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies during the pontificate of Leo XII (1823-1829) gradually improved. The cordial relationships, although short-lived, established between the Pope and Ferdinand I of Bourbon (died in early January 1825) and even more the bonds of affection with his son Francis I allowed to further strengthen the alliance between Throne and Altar and to solve various political and ecclesial problems in the Southern Italy.

"Tap to heal. Jesus of Nazareth and the bodily impurity in the Synoptic Gospels" -
This research investigates the position of Jesus of Nazareth about the bodily impurities in the traditions merged in the Synoptic Gospels. Particularly, it examines the attitude of the historical Jesus toward lepers and people with abnormal blood flow and during physical contact with dead bodies. The various readings given in the Synoptic Gospels about the same event, with a different emphasis on halachic implications, are the results of reflections by the early Christian communities.

In funere Pii VII. The Commemorations of Pope Chiaramonti in Naples during the Restoration (August - September 1823)
On the death of Pius VII (20 August 1823) a great wave of emotion pervaded the whole Catholic world. In the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies – also through the provisions issued by the civil and religious authorities – solemn commemorations were prepared in honor of the deceased pontiff; in particular, in Naples the three most majestic and expensive celebrations in memory of Pope Chiaramonti were organized by the Archiepiscopal Curia, the Bourbon Court and the Apostolic Nunciature, in a competition based on ephemeral apparatuses, sacred music and oratory ability.

State, Church and Inquisition in the Kingdom of Naples in an unpublished report by Bartolommeo Capasso for Pasquale Stanislao Mancini _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Between 1876 and 1878, Pasquale Stanislao Mancini, in that period Minister of Grace, Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs in the Depretis Government, promoted an ambitious research project to find documentation in Italian archives on the relations between the State and the Church in pre-unification Italy. In the Minister’s intentions, this investigation had to lead to the publication of eight series of volumes containing the most significant unpublished and rare documents on the subject. Partially realized in the following years, the ministerial initiative availed of the collaboration of eminent Italian researchers and archivists, among them also the Neapolitan Bartolommeo Capasso, who elaborated an interesting historical-archival report on the Inquisition in the Kingdom of Naples, using mostly documents, subsequently destroyed, of the City Historical Archive of Naples.

Between 1814 and 1815, after the liberation of Pius VII and during the Congress of Vienna, the Holy See was forced to maintain a difficult equidistance between Joachim Murat and Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and especially to withstand the pressures of their diplomatic representatives then residing in Rome. This research examines, therefore, the heated disputes and secret maneuvers used by the contenders to corroborate, trying to get the support of the Pope and of the leading members of the Roman Curia, the claims on the throne of Naples by their respective sovereigns.

In 1817, during the difficult negotiations for the new Concordat between the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the Holy See, the elderly Pope Pius VII became seriously ill, to the point of inducing the European Courts to begin secret maneuvers in view of an upcoming Conclave. In conjunction with these events, the Court of Naples was also forced to deal with a real diplomatic duel with the leaders of the Roman Curia and the papal plenipotentiaries for groped to finally solve the longstanding problem of the appointment of bishops to the numerous vacant dioceses in southern Italy.

«Due to the absence of His Eminence».
The government of the diocese of Naples during the exile of cardinal Giuseppe Maria Capece Zurlo (1799-1801) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Among the most famous victims of the first Bourbon Restoration after the fall of the Neapolitan Republic of 1799, there was, without doubt, the old cardinal Giuseppe Maria Capece Zurlo, archbishop of Naples (1782-1801). On the basis of unpublished archival sources, the author attempts to reconstruct carefully the period of Capece Zurlo’s exile in the abbey palace in Loreto of Montevergine and its serious consequences for the government of the archdiocese of Naples, temporarily entrusted to the pastoral care of Vincenzo Maria Torrusio, bishop of Capaccio and vicar general cum omnimoda potestate. In the present research also illustrates how the forced resignation of Capece Zurlo and the appointment of his successor had caused an attrition of the diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Naples and the Holy See in the early nineteenth century.

The essay examines the history of the neapolitan College of St. Mary in Cosmedin, in the district of Portanova, starting from Royal decree of general suppression of religious orders issued August 7, 1809 by Joachim Murat. Through records and inventories drawn up during the seizure is analyzed the material state of the barnabitic College in the early XIX century and the building’s utilizations are reconstructed, based on unpublished documents, after the expulsion of Barnabites until the early years of the Bourbon Restoration.
